***Aelters, Frenchman and former member of Dat Politics, has described his take on the creative process as "gentle mutation." Though his approach to making music has remained consistent over the years, Aelters has definitely evolved where style is concerned. On Mixitch Mjeuga Djisc, the rattling, high-speed breaks of previous releases give way to hardcore disco-tech. The beats have become slower, distorted and heavier. Samples from an astounding range of sources still dominate-- spoken voices, beatboxes, Gameboys, old synths-- but his software now seems beyond human control, operating under the spell of some manic groove generator. The resulting tracks, much like the French themselves, are dense, concrete, often fun and always unpredictable. Many of the sounds obviously stem from the direct neighborhood of the Frenchman. Strangely charged personal moments, fragments of conversation and children's voices blend and shuffle in the dust-up of whirling distortion and flickering soundbites. Familiar forms emerge out of apparent cacophony, are immediately subjected to ironic groove makeovers, and seconds later fired back into the sound storm. Bits of rhythm blast out of techno's past and immediately splinter off into whirring sound loops. Miraculously, the beat perseveres throughout, twisted but intact, and one is simply left with the question, "Who knows on which foot to dance to Aelters' music?" 30-second MP3 excerpts: Pal-Xmas Cheap Gift Hempluschoul Soaplinerds Lucky Complist Sinchronisiac Mix Switch This Usb Gosch Ohm L'anachorette First M"chant Jet Cash-Op Transit If you have a recent version of iTunes software on your computer, clicking on the link immediately below should open the iTunes application and take you to that album's iTunes page-- where you can listen to samples and buy this album, or individual tracks: go to iTunes to browse downloads for Aelters "Mixitech Mjeuga Djisc" (Sonig) If you have a subscription account at emusic.com, you can download tracks for purchase here.
