YOUNG GOD

Artist: AKRON / FAMILY Title: Love Is Simple
Format: CD+DVD Catalog
Number:
YG34CD
Price: $16.00 Label: Young God
Release
Date:
9/10/07
***For those of you who have seen my simpering, slavishly devotional Akron/Family blurbs and press releases in the past, wherein I make ridiculous claims about them (which I happen to believe!), it should come as no surprise when I reiterate they are one of the best bands on the planet. I don't recall seeing such fantastic live shows ever, except maybe Pere Ubu at the Whiskey in LA circa 1978 or Ummagumma-era Pink Floyd circa 1968/9.

Take those unrelated reference points and mix in The Beatles, Chicago Art Ensemble, CCR, The Grateful Dead, The Hollies, The Butthole Surfers, Led Zeppelin, and you might get a notion-- probably not. Anyway, this record comes the closest to bridging the gap between the chaos, rock action, tribal bongo-banging and sentimental sing-alongs of their live shows and the necessarily more cerebral, or at least worked-over and layered process of recording in the studio. So, there are beautiful songs and harmonies on this album, and also wild and weird jams, all in the service of their chosen Deity, or Nothingness, or LOVE, or whatever it is they're on about.

The album was recorded and produced by Andrew Weiss and mixed variously at Trout Recording by Bryce Goggin, at Excello Studios by Ethan Donaldson and by Andrew Weiss at Zion House of Flesh.
--Michael Gira/Young God Records

"... now roaming all over a wide, open space where antique folk balladry, primal drone and explosive improvisation meet and melt in a woodland psychedelia that answers an age-old musical question: What if Pink Floyd gave birth to Ummagumma in The Band's basement at Big Pink?" --Rolling Stone

30-second MP3 excerpts:

Love, Love, Love (Everyone)
Ed Is A Portal
Don't Be Afraid, You're Already Dead
I've Got Some Friends
Lake Song/New Ceremonial Music For Moms
There's So Many Colors
Crickets
Phenomena
Pony's O.G.
Of All The Things
Love, Love, Love (Reprise)

Artist: AKRON / FAMILY Title: Meek Warrior
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
YG33
Price: $9.50 Label: Young God
Release
Date:
9/25/06
*** "Since Akron/Family's March '05 debut, the band has played hundreds and hundreds of shows across the known world, recorded a split album with Angels of Light (serving as backing band on the flipside of the disc), cut a few home-brewed albums to sell on the road, and generally worked themselves to death-- or at least into some new unrecognizable entity. And now this: a special, budget-priced album, over thirty-five minutes long, that shows them morphing yet again, into something comfortably unfamiliar, by turns wild, gentle, raging, hilarious, elated, meditative and sometimes simply beautiful.

"For instance, the song "Gone Beyond" is the sort of palliative hymn I'd love to hear while drifting through the universe, having unexpectedly jettisoned the meat-grinder of earthly existence, whereas "Blessing Force" begs to be played repeatedly at sense-pummeling volume. Ultimately, Akron/Family sorts out these inner conflicts, and consequently, Meek Warrior is a pretty stunning document.

"As of mid-2006 the group is safely ensconced in some mountain get-away, enjoying a much-needed recuperative retreat. Good thing, because in Fall and Winter '06/'07 they'll be touring again, then recording another album for YGR, then touring again, on and on ad infinitum."
-- Michael Gira, Young God Records

Artist: AKRON/FAMILY Title: S/T
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
YG028
Price: $12.00 Label: Young God
Release
Date:
3/14/05
***Akron/Family came to NYC in 2002 to make music, hoping to find a thread of real magic still winding through The Big Apple's music scene by retreating into a tiny Brooklyn apartment, where they made their own world instead, in complete and stubborn isolation. They grew alarmingly long beards, developed a playful but hermetic, quasi-religious, sonic worldview / creed known as "Ak" or sometimes "Ak-Ak" and recorded on crude home equipment at least three albums' worth of material, which they compulsively chop, splice, and orchestrate into fractal jewels of song and schismatically opposed atmospheres.

The music veers from gentle American country folk to unabashed electronic noise, to gathering and erupting crescendos, to extended skronk improvisations that suddenly cut to an LSD version of a backwoods barbershop quartet or a Louvin Brothers spiritual-- sometimes all within the course of one ridiculously long "song." Their enthusiasm for pure sound too is evident in instances such as a squeaking chair played by Miles Seaton, all four Akrons simultaneously violently beating their chests, the resulting percussive sound being the air released from their mouths with each beat. As the band recorded with Michael Gira and Jason La Farge, a song would sometimes be described as "too red" or "not aluminum enough" or some other arcane reference, but inevitably, corrections made with the aid of a screwdriver or maybe the sanded metal rails of a staircase resulted in an unpredictable but "correct" result. When the pure and sonorous voice of Ryan Vanderhoof, who sings lead on most of the songs, slides up to the higher registers, it inevitably evokes comparisons to angels and elicits uncomfortable feelings in girl and boy alike; when they all sing together it's like the goddamn Beatles or Beach Boys or maybe an eerie and twisted version of The Band.

30-second MP3 excerpts:

Before And Again
Suchness
Part Of Corey
Italy
I'll Be On The Water
Running, Returning
Afford
Interlude: Ak Ak Was The Boat They Sailed In On
Sorrow Boy
Shoes
Lumen
How Do I Know
Franny/You're Human
[Untitled]
