YOUNG GOD

Artist: BANHART, DEVENDRA Title: Nino Rojo
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
YG025
Price: $13.00 Label: Young God
Release
Date:
9/13/04
***Culled from the same sessions as Rejoicing In The Hands, Niño Rojo is a companion album-- essentially the second part of a double album (in fact, both will released together on vinyl as a double-LP in 2005). Devendra Banhart is so amazingly magical, unique, and genuine that people just gravitate naturally to his music; best friends' grandmothers relate to it, hard-ass experimentalists enthuse about it, even country/bluegrass purists recognize the man's talents. He emanates joy, generosity, whimsical imagination, superb guitar playing, lyrical complexity, and an absolutely one-of-a-kind voice.

Niño Rojo does have a little more orchestration than Rejoicing, but that's more by coincidence than anything else, and simply adds a little color to the songs. Not even strictly necessary at all. Everything was there on tape when originally Banhart performed it. The album opens with a cover of Ella Jenkins' "Wake Up, Little Sparrow" and one precious gem after another follows, sixteen in all.

This CD contains a video of "At The Hop" performed live (and somewhat psychedelicized) in a grassy field in northern California, dandelions flitting in the wind. The tune was cowritten with Andy Cabic from Vetiver, and they perform a duet of it on the audio portion of the CD.

Banhart assembles his delicate and whimsical folk songs with the naivety of a three-year-old at play. And so while his songs are as earnest as soil, they're also as beautiful and joyous as spring in full bloom...Banhart makes music that could charm the birds from the trees such is the uncomplicated beauty of his songs. Devendra Banhart is a fucking genius. Honest. --NME

Banhart gives himself so wholly and so without artifice or posture, that even the most jaded of listeners can't help but be awed. --Kevin Jagernauth, Popmatters.com

    Majestic. --Othermusic.com/MK

I'm not alone in thinking there's something about Banhart's muse that defies words and logic, something to these songs that hints at a deeper connection to the cosmos than most of us share. Jeff Buckley might have had that gift; John Lennon and Van Morrison certainly did. Add to that list Devendra Banhart, an astonishing talent whose future work promises to bring us to exciting new places. --Harp Magazine

Devendra pleads to be put in the subject's suitcase, so he'll never be apart from his companion...After yet another brilliant release from Devendra Banhart, we share his sentiment, hoping the talented singer-songwriter continues to take us along on his journey as one of the more memorable musicians of our time. --Stylus Mag

It's not often that two of the best albums in a given year are by the same artist. Does anyone need more evidence that Devendra is this generation's greatest singersongwriter? --Other Music

To say Devendra Banhart is unique is an absurd understatement. When I first heard the voice of this completely unknown, precociously talented 21-year-old songwriter, I could not believe it. His occasionally warbling falsetto is alternately bizarre, comical, and often a little frightening. Coupled with his advanced finger-picking guitar style - which itself often veers schizophrenically from gentle grooves into jolting, non-rhythmic stabs and weird harmonic flights of chaos-- and the wildly surreal nature of his truly exceptional lyrics, each of the 21 songs on this CD (some of which clock in at about 30 seconds) contain their own special drama and immediately memorable melodies - no mean feat when your instrumentation is acoustic guitar and voice, with only the occasional hand clap or whistle thrown in as "orchestration." In a popular music environment inundated with computer and electronically generated sound and sanitized ProTools mixes, it's a tremendous relief to hear something so ridiculously compelling, low-tech, utterly personal, and hand-made. The songs were recorded on various borrowed and usually broken 4-track cassette recorders by Banhart himself in various haphazard locations around the globe. These recordings were made solely for himself, and they're better for it - devoid of any self-consciousness or artifice, just utterly personal and idiosyncratic, magically twisted and imaginative.

All kinds of comparisons that might be relevant in describing Banhart - from Marc Bolan's pre-T. Rex recordings to Daniel Johnston, to Nick Drake's inner purity and pathos, to Karen Dalton (one of Banhart's idols).

With songwriting and guitar-playing that have progressed since Oh Me Oh My The Way The Day Goes By The Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs Of The Christmas Spirit, and determined not to be ghettoized as a low-fi crank, Devendra Banhart and Michael Gira agreed it was best to move on to professional recording studios. Lynn Bridges, who works with Jimmy Johnson (of Mussel Shoals fame), invited them to his old, southern house with tall ceilings and wood floors on the Alabama / Georgia border, where they recorded 32 songs (culled from something like 57 initial submissions), using the best possible vintage gear. Banhart sat on a stool in that living room for ten days, twelve hours per, playing constantly, sometimes with a chorus of cicadas when they recorded at night with open windows. Overdubs were later added back in NYC.

The title tune-- a duet with the legendary '60s English folk gamin (one of Banhart idols) Vashti Bunyan-- is an obvious highlight, but Banhart's uncanny ability to transport the listener through words, voice, and pretty amazing finger-picked acoustic guitar is where the album's magic lies.

Gira was immediately struck by Banhart's home recordings (which he eventually released on Young God), especially his voice, "a quivering high-tension wire [that] sounded like it could have been recorded 70 years ago-- these songs could have been sitting in someone's attic, left there since the 1930s." Following Oh Me Oh My's tidal wave of acclaim, three or four US tours, tours in Europe, and a feature on NPR, Banhart remains the most genuine, least cynical and calculated artist Gira has ever known, one of the most innately talented, magical performers he ever heard. Whether the songs are pained, twisted, whimsical, or even sometimes weirdly silly, aside from being fantastically musical and expertly played, they are also utterly sincere, and devoid of postmodern irony. He's the real thing.

With a gratifying amount of interest surrounding Devendra Banhart's debut album Oh Me Oh My The Way The Day Goes By The Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs Of The Christmas Spirit, Young God has harvested six new tracks from the floating and constantly replenished pool of songs at Banhart's disposal (about 100 from which to choose at any given moment), and complemented them with two favorites from Oh Me Oh My... to make The Black Babies (UK). But let's cut to the chase and survey selected comments plucked from the onslaught of praise for Mr. Banhart:

Using voice, guitar, and four-track, his raw songcraft is terrifyingly effective at communicating the breadth of human emotion.... Belying his uncouth and unwashed countenance, Devendra Banhart's debut is beautiful, damaged, naked and utterly compelling. -Jim Haynes, The Wire

Take one damaged 21-year-old drifter, give him an acoustic guitar and some busted four-track recorders, and the result is a compelling mix of the eccentric and the sublime.... Certainly Devendra Banhart's beautifully raw debut album sounds like nothing else ... more than just spittle in the face of an over-processed music industry. Soulful, troubling and troubled, it's a spiritual manifesto from a one-man species. -Neva Chonin, San Francisco Chronicle

It's the voice that pulls you in, flitting from lilting to hectoring, sweet to sinister.... He could be Barrett-era Syd possessed by the soul of Tiny Tim ... an album that escapes definition, beguilingly sweet, yet ever so, ever so dark. -Andrew Male, Mojo

The quaver in Mr. Banhart's voice is as shaky as his songs' connection to everyday reality. In lo-fi recordings-- usually just his guitar and his multiplied voice-- his songs and fragments ponder animals, apparitions, logical leaps and childlike certainties, all with credible eccentricity. -Jon Pereles, The New York Times

Itty-bitty scraps of thoughts/impressions, poetic prose in simple frames of spidery acoustic guitar and a startling voice that warbles high, fretful and foreboding-- vulnerable, of course, but comforting, too ... loads of actually fantastic guitar picking and several thrillingly unconventional song shapes ... but what in lesser hands would be merely irritating is in Devendra's undeniably authentic and even authoritative. Oh Me Oh My... sets new (its own) standards; by the end of one spin, it's not weird at all, more a darkly angelic kind of beautiful. -John Payne, LA Weekly
