***(not actual cover art) Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom completely flip the synth-only script and drop what might be the crown jewel in the DFA dance single stable. Black Leotard Front is actually a performance art dance troupe that includes Russom, Gonzalez, fine artist Christian Holstad and Daniel Schmidt. "Casual Friday" was created so they would have something custom-made to dance to. The results added a new name to the DFA roster-- and, apparently, one of the greatest disco records of all time. If you ever wanted to mix your sour Kraut with sweet Italo disco, welcome to the soundtrack to your mind! The greatest 15-minute disco record of all time. Murphy and Goldsworthy sound like they took hold of the West End Records house band circa 1981 and decided to art 'em up. There's an incomprehensible lyric about confronting somebody at the office; a pealing, glassy synth wriggle that announces each sonic shift; and the funkiest, sexiest, blessedly loosest pronunciation of the word bonjour on public record; not to mention an ending that pays explicit homage to Sleezy D's apocalyptic early acid-house hit, "I've Lost Control." --Michaelangelo Matos |
