This single features "I Can't Sleep At Night" from Ode To Joy (a favorite on Little Steven's Underground Garage radio show) as well as three previously unreleased tracks from the bando"Nasty Boots" (a very Rolling Stones inspired original), "Big Bird" (originally done by Eddie Floyd), and "Shot Down" (an early Neil Diamond track).

***Hot new Memphis-style barbecued soul coming at you by way of Toronto, Canada: meet The Deadly Snakes. In 1999, some youngsters invited Greg Oblivian, formerly of the Memphis garage/soul/punk band The Oblivians, to Canada to produce an album by their six-piece rock'n'roll band. They perfectly blend rock, punk and soul - they even have a horn section. Naturally, Greg was so taken with their music that he not only wanted to be their producer, but he wanted to be in the band. They completed the album, later released by Sympathy for the Record Industry, with Greg as producer and soon after hit the road with him in tow as their second guitarist/lead vocalist. Now they are seven.

Featuring all original material, I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore shows off the band's maverick musicianship and songwriting skills, and how could it not? With no fewer than three different lead vocalist/songwriters, influences run the gamut: Stax-style soul, Rolling Stones-style R&B raunch, the backwoods blues of Bob Dylan with The Band, the slinky growl of Van Morrison with Them, and loads of others.

Their live shows are testimonials to the power of rock and soul music. I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore sounds classic and timeless. This is rock'n'roll music performed as the Almighty commands.

Balancing frenetic, hand clapping, foot-stomping madness with plenty of swampy harmonica notes, vintage organ and a becoming drunken squalor, the Deadly Snakes give a warm welcome to rock'n'roll from the '60s...These Deadly Snakes rely on raw, mid-tempo numbers to shoulder their gritty and soulful call-and-response...Reminiscent of an inebriated, confused Neil Young, André St. Clair's vocals...lurch coolly from verse to verse with a demeanor that's unmistakably carefree, yet carefully crafted for a perfect fit that sounds like a gospel church choir gone haywire. Simple enough for the hoi polloi to sink their teeth into, yet still cool enough to satiate the planet's garage rockers.
-Andrew Magilow, Splendid

***From the word go, Toronto's Deadly Snakes were a big band. While most high-school rock aspirations begin with groups of friends playing in trusty three- or four-piece lineups, the Snakes got off the ground as a six-piece ensemble. Kid rockers with a horn section, for Christ's sake. Start young with that kind of firepower at your disposal, stick with it six long years-- practicing, playing out, and digging deep into the Rolling Stones, electric Bob Dylan, early Van Morrison and the entire canon of soul music-- and, yeah, you do earn the word "deadly" in your name. The 'Snakes now have a well earned reputation as one of the most soul-shaking live acts on the circuit today.

Ode To Joy is The Deadly Snakes' third album and it's their finest moment to date, even hotter than their first two albums. It refines their attack with galloping rhythms, weeping turns to gospel, and the horn section leans into New Orleans funk. These guys have got a Memphis soul-gone-punk rock sound nnnnnnailed. Not bad for a bunch of white guys in their early '20s from Canada.

***Heavily influenced by 1960s r'n'b and rock'n'roll, The Deadly Snakes have an in-depth knowledge of music from that golden era, yet cast off any notions of mere reproduction. The band released their first album, Love Undone, in 1999, followed by I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore in 2001 and the critically acclaimed Ode to Joy in 2003.

Confidence and genuine talent ooze from the grooves of Porcella and, despite an energetic and revamped sound, the group never strays far from its rock or soul roots. Guided by competent hands, toy pianos, mellotrons, organs, horns, strings and percussion are fashioned into good, new-fashioned rock'n'roll-- at times soft, thoughtful and heart-wrenchingly passionate, at times fast, furious and unquestionably fearless.

Porcella is one of those rare albums that has depth without bottom, no limits and certainly no place for conformity. Respecting the roots of the music they create and reflecting those elements in their own work results in a dazzling palimpsest effect. The unity of Porcella-- ripe, rapacious yet refined-- will convert you and then pervert you.
