***2004 was an amazing year for Jason Forrest. His Sonig debut, The Unrelenting Songs of the 1979 Post Disco Crash, surprised many with its revolutionary rock-disco sample ideology. The album received a massive amount of supportive press internationally, the video for "Stepping Out" was named video of the year in Res magazine, and he performed 90-plus concerts at music festivals and clubs throughout Europe and Canada.

Now he's back with Lady Fantasy, a moody and expansive new EP. The tone is set on "The Work Ahead Of Us," a tense, abstract collaboration with avant-garde songwriter David Grubbs reminiscent of the drone-krautrock of Neu or Berlin-era Bowie. Then the title track, "Lady Fantasy," hits hard like a prog-rockfueled interstellar collision of massive synths, overdriven freejazz/ breakcore drums and cellphone bleeps. Then "The Lure Of You," co-written with Italian singer songwriter Margareth Kammerer, with its strangely light pop/rock feel surprises with subtly and mass-market appeal. The EP ends with "Sperry and Foil," a song in many parts, in many different directions, like a sprawling '70s prog epic. The song jumps between electro, bucolic rock, and anxious digital soundscapes yet holds a somewhat sweet and nostalgic feeling throughout. This eventually builds into a final rocking crescendo that prepares the listener for the big rock sound to be found on Forrest's full-length album due later this year.

***Jason Forrest turned heads with his first Sonig release, The Unrelenting Songs of the 1979 Post Disco Crash, a musical rollercoaster ripping through genres like an amphetamine-crazed hobo. It received rave reviews from a respected array of international press-- a remarkable accomplishment for such an odd and ambitious mix of high-speed disco and breakcore with a '70s swagger. The question, of course, was "can Forrest possibly repeat this success?" A few beats into Shamelessly Exciting and there is suddenly no doubt-- yes, he can and he does it in style! Cascades of sound taken from virtually every form of rock music (hard/soft/ punk/prog/blues) pour down heavier than ever before. Even more intense is the sound of shattering samples, every single one of them vying for the listener's attention. Forrest sets off fireworks of ideas and references, exuding enormous energy along the way, filling every possible nook with a rocking good time. Forrest is not ashamed of being a fan and uses all kinds of music, regardless of what might be considered "good" or "bad" taste, as resources for his unpredictable masterpieces. Poaching in these fertile hunting grounds with competence, boldness and knowledge, yet retaining a seriousness and refined sense of depth, Forrest guarantees lasting euphoria in an otherwise disillusioned industry.

***These five songs were all at some point all included on the Post Disco Crash album, but work really well together on their own. They were all created about the same time, and are related like siblings, different and individual, but still blood.

"I Wish That Everything Was Gold" was created from manipulated samples of the always big and synthetic ELO and reduces them to a more generalized wash. "Drieze Cassette" is the eldest of the bunch, hard as fuck with a brainy, expansive center that is very basic and genuine. The flipside begins with the party stomper "Dragonattack," an homage to both Queen and early Michael Jackson, with its a rock-and-roll rollercoaster disco beats and the occasional acid riff. Things get more funky with "Doubleneck'd Liar," a glitchy disco funk number with horns and Casio beats. "Gonna Take You To Hell" ruins the party with good intentions cursed by drunken antics.

  • Very limited edition 12-inch, the first in a new series that will include Wevie de Crepon, Schlammpeitziger, æ, et al.

***Jason Forrest, an artist formerly known as Donna Summer, is a celebrity among electronic artists; featured by magazines all around the world, he is one one of the most brilliant Plunderphonic artists who has ever walked the Earth. He samples, deconstructs and reconstructs himself into a rage while driving audiences to the verge of madness. Forrest obviously knows his disco and his prog rock; he's a maniac who controls his machines with dreamlike competence. His knowledge of repertoires and styles seems boundless. He mixes the most trashy with the most beautiful and the most rocking elements of th disco-decade into lavish sets, which, believe it or not, are perfectly danceable. Samples sound as if they had been broken three times and patched up four. Big band-like brass sections! Wild guitar solos! And, of course, always disco, Disco, DISCO! All this is combined in such a euphoric mix.
