***As the title suggests, this collection of works by Birmingham-based musician and contemporary composer Ed Lawes is divided between pieces (scored for or improvised on more traditional instruments) and tracks (more computer-based or electroacoustic works). 14 Tracks / Pieces includes studies for violin, double bass and tenor saxophone, and works for mixed ensemble, among others. The performances, recordings and improvisations are carefully edited and processed, layered and combined, yet Lawes wrings a tremendous depth of emotion from them. Brief references: Ligeti, Stockhausen, Autechre, Anthony Braxton. 30-second MP3 excerpts: Actually Real More Time Honoured Bowed / Caused Fewer Ways / Mode Ways / 24 V.A.Ish Unlevel/R Brief Junk Aclear An Ordered Set Tone F/S Bowl / Fourths And Fifths Obstacles Oohs Pastiche Middle Four Changes On Non-Themes If you have a recent version of iTunes software on your computer, clicking on the link immediately below should open the iTunes application and take you to that album's iTunes page-- where you can listen to samples and buy this album, or individual tracks: Ed Lawes "14 Tracks/Pieces" (Planet Mu) If you have a subscription account at emusic.com, you can download tracks for purchase here.
