***Burner is a work that undeniably declares the presence of an artist in his prime. A radical departure from odd nosdam's past productions, Burner is a dense, seamless composition of found sounds, obscure records and diverse instrumentation. His trademark lo-fi aesthetic-- familiar to listeners of cLOUDDEAD-- can be attributed to the harmony extant between his G4 and a trusty 8-track cassette deck. A unique approach to composition, utilizing rhythms of head-nodding simplicity and balls-out emotional dynamics, results in a mixed-up, blissed-out hybrid. There is no use labeling it pop, emo-ambient, dirty loop, space rock, or hipnotica. It's all these plus more and none of the above.

The integrity of odd nosdam's work is also due in large part to the company kept in the studio: Dosh, Andrew Broder (Fog), Orvar Smarason (Múm), Dax Pierson and jel (Subtle / Themselves), Josiah Wolf and Doug McDiarmid (WHY?), Jessica Bailiff and Mike Patton. The talent meshes well here, but so do the styles. Mix and match Lee "Scratch" Perry's rhythmic spontaneity, the tape saturated drone of Flying Saucer Attack , the hip-hop collage of Prince Paul and Hood's emotional clarity and you'll have an idea what's going on here. After all is said, written, and done, odd nosdam's latest can be considered not only a firm assertion of his stridently independent, post-cLOUDDEAD aesthetic, but more importantly perhaps, his first true masterwork.

***An Odd Nosdam record is more than music. More and more, David P. Madsonis albums are collections of wordless short stories and scenes, intricately woven audio scrapbooks that buzz with singular experience as lived through the eyes and ears of one very electric human conduit. 2005is threateningly dense and gorgeous Burner was built amongst bad relationships, nasty headspaces and East Oakland situations, but Level Live Wires is the distinct product of inspiration, bizarre happenstance and wonder, lived out in a series of bright moments eventually brought together under the roof of an unruffled West Berkeley cottage. 8-track cassettes, samplers, synths and Dictaphones, lost records and found sounds, field recordings and happy accidents are brought to stirring life by our humble collagist.

Nosdamis fascination with these odd moments gives Level Live Wires its enveloping draw. Each bit that becomes a part of a song is an otherwise static and eventually staid sound that could have become mere memory. Instead, he takes each into his life (often burning sounds onto disc and listening to them throughout his day), and gives them blood in return.

This fully-realized work includes contributions by a number of Madsonis co-conspirators: Dee Kesler of Thee More Shallows, Whyis Doug McDiarmid and Yoni Wolf, Chris Adams (Hood, Bracken), Jessica Bailiff, Cosmos Lee, Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio), and more.

***A young odd nosdam began meddling with machines in the mid-'90s, looping his favorite Nirvana riffs on a Sega Genesis CD player and filling tapes with noise collage. Since then he has compiled at least three solo full lengths, as well as a number of collaborations, including the highly acclaimed cLOUDDEAD. nosdam has developed his own distinct sound, drawing inspiration from a broad palette ranging from Flying Saucer Attack and Hood to the RZA and everything in between and outlying. nosdam allows his many mental ups and downs, quirks and eccentricities to seep deep into his sound creations - a rare quality among modern instrumental artists.

no more wig for ohio is a meticulously deliberate two-part arrangement of instrumental songs and far found sounds collaged into a maniacal music quilt that somehow retains cohesiveness. Part one (tracks 1-11) listens like a razor-sharp piss-take on the world around the artist-- an orgy of church hymns and infomercials. The record's second half (tracks 12-24), in all its sick-drum sweet-tone eeriness, reveals a bit of nosdam's human desperation with some of the hardest beats he has ever unleashed upon a sound wave's trespasser's ears. Perfect for headphones, grind dancing, and formal get-togethers of all kinds.

***Inimitable producer Odd Nosdam returns with Pretty Swell Explode, an enhanced two-disc collection (one album, one EP) of remixes, B-sides, videos, and original songs, including eight tracks entirely exclusive to this set. Here Nosdam compiles the odds and ends created mostly around his last two full-lengths (2005's Burner and last year's Level Live Wires), as well as a few choice gems from bygone days.

The first disc is bombastic and beat-blown, and well displays Nosdam's impressive range as a remix artist. Two of the record's strongest pieces are remixes created solely for this project. "(growin' up in the Hood) Four Thousand Style" is Nosdam's electric tribute to Leeds cult heroes Hood (fronted by Chris Adams, who records for Anticon as Bracken). A year of work and various snippets from the Hood catalogue went into the crunchy, spooked-out opus, with Adams's words disembodied and scrambled into the heaving song body. On "Forever Heavy (shoegangter/JB remix)," Nosdam actually recreates a Black Moth Super Rainbow original from scratch. Drum machine maestro Jel (Subtle/Themselves) adds a few pounds and Flying Saucer Attack collaborator Jessica Bailiff sings ghostly overtop, recalling Stereolab caught in a heavy swirl of fuzz, grind, and unusual beauty. In fact, Bailiff's voice is a binding element of Pretty Swell Explode's first half, a compilation that plays like a true album.

The second disc is Nosdam's ambient EP, exchanging drums and voice for the fuzzy warmth of eight-track cassete composition. Burner-era B-side "My Prayer Rug" rocks a slow and steady crystalline stomp that morphs into the blissed-out record-skip trip of "Bear Hug" (exhumed from the cLOUDDEAD days) before reaching the nine-minute, four-chambered remix suite, "Dayvan Cowboy," originally by Boards of Canada. This hard-fought multi-movement reinvention moves between intensity and quiet like seasons or the sea (and an unused selection from this remix, "D C (bit)" can be found on disc one.) Fittingly, "20th" carries the listener to the record's finish on a broad swell.

Accompanying these blasted sounds are three videos. Recent single "Kill Tone" (from Level Live Wires) is given a suitably exuberant treatment courtesy of Ravi Zupa; Skhoinarion weaves a kaleidoscopic collage to the "Dayvan Cowboy" remix (originally an unsolicited YouTube video); Spencer Williams, one-half of Portland ambient duo Drape, constructs a slow rain of Fourth-worthy fireworks display around Burner's "Clouded." The limited vinyl edition of Pretty Swell Explode also includes a hidden unreleased version of Nosdam's Lee Perry-inspired "Upsetter."

***With the opening single for his forthcoming full-length, Burner-- a true debut full length album as opposed to a collection of instrumentals-- odd nosdam emerges from the smoking ruins of cLOUDDEAD, his brilliant and starcrossed collaboration with doseone and why?.

Evidence of a renewed license to uncompromisingly chase the detours and dictates of his own inimitable aesthetic, untitled three is from Burner's early stages, where nosdam borrowed a dusty micro-Moog and began layering melodic lines. And as is true for the rest of Burner, untitled three is by turns painstakingly quiet and intensely compressed; it marries rap-raw drums and deep-sea synths, and, in so doing, threads subtle hooks through the rim of one's attention. untitled three commences and closes with duets with Kranky Records vocalist Jessica Bailiff. One is tempted to refer to Bailiff's singing as "unearthly," or, God forbid, "ethereal," but her voice is too consistently passionate for such airy adjectives.

nosdam's sound creations tend to defy description, though many stabs have been made: Grooves imagined him as the midpoint between My Bloody Valentine and the Bomb Squad; CMJ suggested "Negativland-meets-Schooly "; XLR8R somewhat hyperbolically called his work "the most evocative soundtrack ever"; and Splendid declared simply, "odd nosdam stands at the forefront of hip-hop's avant-garde."
