TIGERBEAT 6

Price: $9.25 Label: Tigerbeat 6

***Cut Open, the third full length from Dwayne Sodahberk, leaves behind the heavy techno-based electronics of his first two Tigerbeat6 releases and picks up the pop thread from 2003's Unfortunately. For Sodahberk this means '60s-flavored acoustic melodies; quiet, electronic krautrock; dark, haunted folk tunes; and subtly lurking noise. There may be some passive aggression in the air, but it's disguised by irresistible and beautiful melodies, of which there are plenty.

The album was recorded in Stockholm and Paris between Fall 2003 and Fall 2005, with Sodahberk singing and playing a variety of acoustic and electric instruments. There are some fine guest appearances, too: Honey Owens (Jackie-O Motherfucker, Nudge) sings on one track, and violinist Liz Hysen (Picastro) sits in on three (Sodahberk has toured with Picastro and remixes a track on their current album). Maria Kihlberg (Revlon 9) is back on a couple of songs and Per Hellquist-- a sometime member of Sodahberk's live band-- joins in on clarinet on one track.

Even though the album has its fair share of noise and distortion, it's probably the most accessible and listener-friendly album Sodahberk has released thus far. Better enjoy that while it lasts.

***Shunting aside all pretense of retro-rock irony and designer furniture store etiquette, Swedish postpunk techno misfit Dwayne Sodahberk gives us a seventeen-song collection of excitingly memorable songs painstakingly composed and improvised with just the right balance between egghead super-collider DSP impacts and raw drum machine beats, twisted modular synth stabs, the occasional glitch, and melodic guitar workouts.

With a handful of EPs for his own Stuporsonika label and appearances on numerous compilations under his belt, as well as the occasional Absolut Vodka or Saab advertisement, Sodahberk has been quietly making a name for himself since 2000 with driving techno pieces that incorporate ambient elements and bursts of noise similar to the sounds championed by labels like Force Inc., Perlon and Kompakt. But Sodahberk is more than just a fresh face on the minimal techno scene, and this first album is a fabulous debut full-length full of dramatic dirges and delicate processes. Deeply inspired by all forms of music, he cites diverse influences-- from Unsane, Blonde Redhead, The Seeds, and Velvet Underground to Autechre, Super_Collider, Fennesz and Mike Ink. Quite possibly the most mature and promising long player to date for Tigerbeat6, Sodahberk's debut will receive a lot of recognition for its eclectic, daring, carefully composed electronica.

***Finished immediately after his first European tour headlining and opening for the likes of Kid606 and the legendary Thomas Brinkmann, this is the soundtrack for a bad night out, including bad attitude, bad judgement, social incompetence, desperation, embarrassment, and unmotivated bursts of exaggerated emotions. Hmmm, resembles a typical Monday morning at Revolver/Midheaven...

Musically, Sodahberk can't decide if he's a punk rocker or an electronica geek or an indie-pop nerd - you gotcher walls of guitar in the opening song, a sassy electro title track (featuring on vocals Maria Eilersen from Swedish indie-electropunk band Revlon9), thick and down-tempo hip-hop beats on "What You Waited For" (with vocals by Dwayne), sentimental pop in "Yeah, You," the V12-engined, unstoppable, four-to-the-floor "Forever," and the hysterical closing track.

The CD version includes tracks previously available only on vinyl-- three from the Unsound EP on Sodahberk's Stuporsonika label, as well as the techno-pop anthem "I_Skatr" from the E.Pr.Disco 12-inch made with Stuporsonika labelmate Janosh Brando for Swayzak's Voltmusik label. Expect to see Dwayne Sodahberk bringing his unique, noisy and often beautiful live set on the 2003 Tigerbeat6 world tour, various remixes, a collaborative record with Swedish electronica pioneer Ralph Lundsten, and a follow-up full length album on Tigerbeat6 some time in the summer.

***The monumental third release and second full length album by Dwayne Sodahberk for Tigerbeat6 represents one of the label's most ambitious and fulfilling forays into modern pop music. Sodahberk could no longer repress his love for stringed instruments and, almost as a statement, traded his prized TR-909 drum machine for a 12-string electric guitar to make this album. Composed in semi-isolation on the outskirts of Stockholm, Sweden, Sodahberk gives Unfortunately a warm, analog glow through digital thumps, tweaks, and textures. His cutely aggressive pitters and patters contrast the emotionally charged noisy bits and adjoin intriguing melodies, gorgeous vocals, and solid structures. This blend of indie poptronics and post-rocking electro is a well balanced soundtrack for dawn to dusk. Beside the folky pop of the Caetano-Veloso-gone-wrong track "Bird," and the rather beautiful, vaguely '60s-flavored title track, there's room for electronic and noisy pieces like the dark "Christa," DSP-electro in "No Fun," and the stiff, desolate clavinet-funk of "If I Could Tell You" and "Almost Cliché."

Pop tendencies and evidence of a tortured singer-songwriter are present on earlier Sodahberk releases, but melancholic songwriting and classic indie rock tunefulness has now fully invaded his electronica in a large scale though shards of noise, fractured soundscapes, contemplative ambience and heavy digital and analog processing still factor in. Most vocals are by Sodahberk, but Maria from Revlon 9, Liz Hysen of the Toronto band Picastro, and various other special guests make appearances.
