CHAINSAW

Artist: TRACY AND THE PLASTICS Title: Muscler's Guide To Videonics
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
CHAIN23
Price: $12.00 Label: Chainsaw
Release
Date:
5/14/01
***What the Supremes are to soul, and the Runaways are to punk, Tracy + The Plastics are to disco - foxilicious combiners of dance-a-minute beats with everyone's favorite slow jams. Don't be surprised if listening station junkies dance on the ceiling of your emporium. Using their boss drum machine, MIDI Out Control! and Akai 612 Sampler, Tracy, Cola, and Nikki slap mental bumperstickers like "Lesbo-For-Disco + Kick 'Em In The Teeth" on your secret groove thing. Tracy in the lead crosses her fingers and belts it out. Nikki and Cola roll in the back, sneering through two dimensions.

Tracy + The Plastics shake to the lo-fi beats of a really cold basement and move to the anti-fi "I want a gold tooth" of VHS. They were brained in the fall of 1999 by Wynne Greenwood (formerly of the video-band Meme America), have released a 30-minute videotape, and appeared on the Mr. Lady compilation Calling All Kinds and Queens. Recorded by Joe Preston of the Thrones, Muscler's Guide To Videonics is the first full-length release from this dyke hearthrob '80s new wave trio that could kick Le Tigre's ass (but you didn't hear that from us) and rip modern convention a new one. Pop standards fall apart like sand in your hand. They play keyboards as gravitron draws the shape of the arcade girl and the kick of the drums fills her in a with gutsy VHS. Huh, indeed, kinpin. These girls are in love, truly. Okay, this is exciting because it's really happening.

HIP HOP SLAM

Artist: V/A Title: Turntables By The Bay Vol 2
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
HHS22
Price: $8.25 Label: Hip Hop Slam
Release
Date:

***Following hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed debut in the series which featured the brand new DJ Shadow track "Flashback," Turntables By The Bay, Vol. II is the second vinyl release in the Bay Area DJ compilation series. This nine-track vinyl LP, spanning five years (1996-2001) of Bay Area DJ history, features both live and studio recordings, brand new and previously released tracks (all but one - "Subconscious I" by Live Human feat. DJ Quest - available on vinyl for the first time ever). Included are tracks from the Invisibl Skratch Piklz (the and Apollo line-up), the legendary DJ 8-Ball (winner of the 1992 West Coast DMC and 1993 NMS Superman Battle), DJ Flare (creator of the "flare" cut), Eddie Def (of Bullet Proof Space Travelers), and Live Human feat. DJ Quest from their long out-of-print, limited edition, self-titled first album. Also included are recordings from San Jose's famous Finger Bangerz crew, DJ Relm (formerly of the Supernatural Turntable Artists, now with the Thud Rumble crew), prolific San Francisco DJ/turntablist/producer Raw B who teams up with cello master Piki Chappell & emcee Luke Sick, and an amazing display of turntable wizardry from the Bay Area's 89 Skratch Gangstaz featuring Snayk Eyez, Pone, and Mike Boogie. The album's informative liner notes by Billy Jam give additional data on each turntable artist and brief biographical specs about the album's cover art creator, Dug-One, who also designed and drew all the graf-meets-futuristic-comic-book characters for the innovative Q-Bert full length animation, Wave Twisters.
