This one was rejected by American VOGUE. Reason: (photo editor's voice) "you gotta decide if you want them to come across as cerebral or jaunty. It can't be both." Uh huh.

Unsure of what exactly VOGUE was after, it was back to the drawing board. John was told to "look uncertain," while Lou was told "look over John's shoulder."

"Send this one to HIGH TIMES," said the label guy.

Omigod. The RAYGUN photo shoot had untold implications. "Send John back to the stylist and tell her 'a little more Todd Rundgren '85 and a little less Duran Duran '82,' then call Emigre, commission an illegible font, put the blow-up quote upside down across their chests and bleed it into the Stussy ad."
