In line with Lo Recordings reissue compilations Because You’re Funky and Luke Vibert’s Nuggets, Back To Black is a fascinating collection of R’n’B, dub, funk and jazz music from the ’60s and ’70s. The CD reflects the political and musical radicalism central to much of the important art of the 20th Century. Picking from two decades where music took some of its greatest chances, Back To Black can be considered historically important even though it is simply so much fun. The album showcases a superb selection of music from the “Lost Generation” featuring classic dub from King Tubby, the cosmic jazz of Andy Bey, the resonant Brit Funk of Cymande to authentic gangland street rhythms from the late ’50s. Compiled by legendary London crate-digger Steve Picton and released in conjunction with the Rich Mix exhibition that is currently on display at the Whitechapel Gallery in London from June through September, Back To Black features gems from seminal artists as well as lesser known musicians. Very few of the hand-picked tracks have been re-released since the time of their original production.
