On Be Still Please, PORTASTATIC’s second release of 2006 and the ninth Portastatic full-length, MAC McCAUHAN sounds as fresh as ever. Analytically angry, melding darker imagery with indignation, McCaughan also musters the wherewithal to remain hopeful. Be Still Please continues the full-on rock band sound of 2005’s Bright Ideas, but with more of an emphasis on the orchestration featured in his soundtrack work Who Loves the Sun. Luckily, McCaughan - who has done enough to fill several typical careers, from writing ingenious film scores to anxious worldly confessions, still brings an explosive energy to his projects, but now with a newfound focus and stillness we can’t get enough of.
