Cut Open, the third full length from Dwayne Sodahberk, leaves behind the heavy techno-based electronics of his first two Tigerbeat6 releases and picks up the pop thread from 2003’s Unfortunately. For Sodahberk this means ’60s-flavored acoustic melodies; quiet, electronic kraut-rock; dark, haunted folk tunes; and subtly lurking noise. There may be some passive aggression in the air, but it’s disguised by irresistible and beautiful melodies, of which there are plenty. The album was recorded in Stockholm and Paris between Fall 2003 and Fall 2005, with Sodahberk singing and playing a variety of acoustic and electric instruments. There are some fine guest appearances, too: Honey Owens (Jackie-O Motherfucker, Nudge) sings on one track, and violinist Liz Hysen (Picastro) sits in on three (Sodahberk has toured with Picastro and remixes a track on their current album). Maria Kihlberg (Revlon 9) is back on a couple of songs and Per Hellquist — a sometime member of Sodahberk’s live band — joins in on clarinet on one track. Even though the album has its fair share of noise and distortion, it’s probably the most accessible and listener-friendly album Sodahberk has released thus far. Better enjoy that while it lasts.
