Like a pair of lumbering, tusky woolly mammoths grazing the glacier-smoothed plains and moraines of a Pleistocene world, the twin basses of Australia’s FIRE WITCH spin epic adventure reels with a uniquely Oz ability for vocabularizing the music without lyrics, singing, screaming or anything but music. Meanwhile, locked-in-step with the basses, primordial thuds and crashes sound like trees falling in a wind storm, alternate between rain and thunder and hint at tectonic shift. Put on a Fire Witch record and you can feel Pangaea cracking apart, hear spring runoff from a stadium-size glacier, watch as raptors alight on a tree, scanning for prey. One feels an immediate sense of the natural world’s chaos and beauty and smells simultaneously spring pollen, molten lava and sea mist.
