The seventh in Numero’s ongoing 12-inch series delves even further into archives of New York’s Tap label. MISSY DEE & THE MELODY CREW cut this tremendous slice of disco rap in 1981, only hours after fellow Tap-mates the Fabulous 3 MCs went upside down and back again on “Rub A Dub Dub.” The original 12-inch is rare not only for its quantity pressed, but for the quality of the four teenage girl rappers—nearly unparalleled at the time. While Missy Dee rocked many a block party, LADY T was the real standout, having come up as a member of KURTIS BLOW’s crew. Her later work as MC TATIANA can be heard on the classic CLOCKIN’ ZZZZs 12-inch “Mission To Rock.” Mastered from the original tapes, including all 8-plus minutes of the vocal take, this reissue should take the Melody Crew from rap jesters to hip hop princesses.
