Gothic folk artist JAY MUNLY’S fifth album Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots is a masterpiece, or rather, a missing piece that secures the phrase “the Denver Sound” — spearheaded by alt country favorites 16 HORSEPOWER and MUNLY’S other band SLIM CESSNA’S AUTO CLUB — in the music critic vernacular. On his fifth solo effort, MUNLY sheds the accompaniment of guitar and banjo of SCAC, instead using a small string ensemble, THE LEE LEWIS HARLOTS, to weave a dark, mystical world in his song stories: imagine, if you will, a world created by Faulkner on bourbon and LSD. Fans of LEONARD COHEN, NICK CAVE, 16 HORSEPOWER, NEIL DIAMOND, and of course, SLIM CESSNA’S AUTO CLUB will appreciate MUNLY’S peculiar approach to Americana. This release comes packaged with a bonus 5.1 channel surround sound DVD-audio version of the same songs. With over sixty tracks of vocals and strings, this is probably the most overproduced album ever on Alternative Tentacles! Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots is a joint release by Alternative Tentacles and the Denver (by way of San Francisco) label Smooch.
