Carlos Hernandez is the son of a ’70s New York soul DJ. After a detour playing in punk and noise projects, he returned to his soul roots and formed Ava Luna, a band of three girls and three guys, to explore a sound that combines all those ideas. Infinite Best is pleased to present Services / 3rd Avenue Island. A combination of their first two self-released works, it was recorded in a church basement on Coney Island, a sanctuary apart from, yet influenced by, the surrounding circus just above. These dozen songs make the listener swoon and strut, in that order. Hernandez weaves Spector-esque girl-group harmonies into funk, noise and pop influences for an aural headrush that travels directly from one’s head to one’s feet. Effortless composers, unforgettable live performers, Ava Luna is the vanguard of modern pop, bending it to their own uncompromising will.
