Fresh from a 12-inch of Venetian Snares remixes, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble proudly present their self-titled debut full-length. Their form of mutant jazz slithers and slides, each song a delicately painful little story of heartache, hope and perseverance. These are soundtracks to non-existing movies, inspired by the worlds of Hieronymus Bosch, Pablo Picasso, and Francisco Goya. Jason Kohnen (aka Bong-Ra) and Gideon Kiers started The Kilimanjao Darkjazz Ensemble around the turn of the century, creating new soundtracks to silent movies like FW Murnau’s Nosferatu and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. Both graduates of the School of Arts, the audio/visual concept behind the band grew to incorporate ‘visual’ music performed alongside existing film fragments to intensify the audio. Philadelphia filmakers and surrealist animators The Quay Brothers were also a big influence on the duo’s early music. In 2004 Hilary Jeffrey began sitting in on trombone, having performed previously with artists such as Nick Bullen and Patrick Pulsinger. Nina Hitz and Ed Loman joined up shortly afterwarsds on cello and guitar respectively and finally Charlotte Cegarra signed on as an improv vocalist to round TKDE in to a full sextet, with Kiers on drums, sequencing and visuals and Kohnen handling bass, synths and sequencing.
