In your younger years, you and your totally misunderstood and mildly attractive best friend of the opposite sex used to spend every summer together. You kind of had a crush on them. Actually, more than a crush. It could have been love. You didn't know what to do, but you wouldn’t dare mention it to anyone, especially them. You proudly and productively put that love into your mixed tapes and by the time school started your cassettes for him or her were perfect. You made sure that Vaselines track mixed perfectly into the instrumental Unrest track. You timed it out perfectly so the Gang of Four B-side would fit next to the Young Marble Giants track, not disturbing the guitar stabs and saxophone riffs of the Essential Logic tune that just barely cut off. You were kind of getting into real “dance” music, but wouldn’t admit it to anyone, especially them. Genders’ There’s Something In The Treats is a lot like that old best friend. They break your heart with spartan casio-tonal pitters and patters, they make you question your feelings with every growling bassline, they make you want to be a better person upon every disco hymn. When you told your friend you were in love with them, they left you stranded in the middle of that creek in the dark with all the bugs and snakes and stuff. Damn, that sucked! There’s Something In The Treats will never leave you like that jerk. Genders love you.
