Write Your Own History collects B-sides and previously unreleased material from up-and-coming UK pop phenoms Field Music, who have produced some amazing nonalbum tracks, equal to many of the songs on their acclaimed 2005 debut. Though all deserve wider recognition, one song in particular, “Alternating Current,” holds particular sway over Memphis Industries—it was the track that initially interested the Brewis brothers when they heard the band’s demo back in 2004. Though the label desperately wanted it on the album proper, the band preferred it as a B-side. Write Your Own History was the compromise—a way to give the song more exposure in a context which the band was (moderately) comfortable with. It could be that typical indie label ploy of following a succesful debut with a singles collection, but there’s no doubt that it’s also given the band a chance to explain themselves, to tell how Field Music rose from the ranks of The Futureheads, The New Tellers and Electronic Eye Machine to write their own history.
