Previously very hard to find, Hoarse contains 16 HORSEPOWER live tracks from Denver in 1998, that were first intended as a bootleg, then released briefly on Checkered Past as an official live album after the powers that be heard how good it is. The band would become a four piece, more electric, more rock at times, and the reigning masters of heavy without being heavy in the metal or punk sense of the word. Here are eight of their original favorites, plus three unique takes on songs by JOY DIVISION, CREEDENCE and GUN CLUB. It could be argued that the voice, vibe and vision of David Eugene Edwards tapped an even deeper vein than Jeffrey Lee Pierce himself. Only instead of a hellhound on his trail, David's went straight to god. At last, a stunning double DVD set of one of the most seminal live bands of recent years. The power and presence of 16 HORSEPOWER onstage are captured beautifully, as close to "you had to have been there" as the medium will allow. Disc one is a multi-camera shoot for Belgian television in 2002. Many Secret South and Folklore songs are here, performed by a five-piece lineup including John Rumley, on loan from SLIM CESSNA'S AUTO CLUB. Disc two features an early three-piece lineup live in Germany in 1996 post-Sackcloth And Ashes, plus rehearsal footage from Denver, impressions from their last US tour, and finally what would turn out to be their last concert ever in Antwerp, Belgium on July 17, 2004. In the US, 16 HORSEPOWER Live DVD has only been available as an import on Glitterhouse Records from Germany. Now, it's available as a domestic US release on Alternative Tentacles (available in all territories except Europe). In many ways, the granddaddy of Denver's world-renowned alt country/folk/roots scene, 16 HORSEPOWER broke first and went further than any of the stellar Denver bands so far, before officially dissolving early last year. With no Marshall stacks to be found, 16 HORSEPOWER used mainly acoustic and antique instruments to whip up some of the most powerful, atmospheric and emotional music any band ever made. Lead vocalist and mainspring David Eugene Edwards' sheer presence commands any room, from local tavern to large European concert hall, without ever leaving his stool--using banjo bandoneon, and paint-peeling slide guitar in ways no one else ever tried before.

*Despite their official dissolution a few years ago, 16 Horsepower casts a long shadow that colors the gothic Americana genre today. Ex-members' bands (Woven Hand, Lilium, etc.) are engaging and critically lauded, but the demand for posthumous 16 Horsepower releases never seems to cease. Live March 2001 is a live recording of one of 16 Horsepower's classic, best recorded shows, released in North America on Alternative Tentacles** and on Glitterhouse in Europe. While live albums are often fodder for completists, 16 Horsepower's intoxicating material becomes even more potent on stage, making 16 Horsepower Live a must-have release. Their instrumentation transforms the usually lighthearted banjo and squeezebox into the loneliest choir that accompanies the smoldering voice of David Eugene Edwards. *In the wake of Crass, the UK birthed a large scene of anarcho-punk bands such as Subhumans, Rudimentary Peni, Flux Of Pink Indians, and, perhaps the best known of all, Amebix*. Their seminal Arise* album, originally released by Alternative Tentacles in 1985, remains one of the genre's ultimate statements, featuring elements of Black Sabbath, Motorhead, and Venom infused with a healthy dose of early punk's gutter grime and Crass' confrontational imagery. Amebix became an archetype for the scene, an inspiration to hundreds of bands worldwide including Sepultura (who even had their own album called Arise) and Neurosis, among others. Prior to Arise, Amebix released their early material on Flux Of Pink Indians' Spiderleg imprint. These recordings came in extremely limited runs, and were bootlegged to death in the ensuing years, while the original master tapes languished in lockdown at Southern Studios. The band finally got their tapes back nearly 25 years later, and now the songs are collected officially for the first time. *No Sanctuary: The Spiderleg Recordings* gathers the sought-after cult releases No Sanctuary, Who's The Enemy, and Winter. Some of these tunes--such as "Winter" and "No Gods, No Masters"--are undisputed classics in the punk world.
