Artist: AWESOME COLOR Title: S/T
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
DAD101
Price: $9.75 Label: American Dust
Release
Date:
2/5/07
***Awesome Color's debut full-length is a mother of a scorched groover. Just check out the track "Free Man," it says it all, man. Primal o-mind rhythm with boss-bliss lyrix and a lead guitar lick-lashing that'll have you cryin' "hell yes!" every time.

Awesome Color came out of Ann Arbor, Michigan where singer and guitarist Derek Stanton grew up across the street from Scott "Rock Action" Asheton of The Stooges. Needless to say he picked up a few things about rock'n'roll around the neighborhood, things he'll never forget. When the time was right, Stanton, drummer Allison Busch and bassist Michael Troutman jumped in a bombed-out car and headed for Brooklyn, New York. And began to blow minds.

Live, they transfix with heavy, cosmic guitars and a rhythm section like a freight train. When they play, they're often joined by brothers and sisters grabbing instruments and getting loud: barefoot guitar solos, sax in the aisles and wolf dancing all around.

Artist: BALDWIN, MATT Title: Paths Of Ignition
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
DAD105
Price: $13.00 Label: American Dust
Release
Date:
4/14/08
***One of the more unexpected-- if worthwhile-- byproducts of the 21st-century underground American folk revival is a renewed interest in solo acoustic guitar music. Spare, haunting, pastoral sounds have a struck a new chord, and the names John Fahey and Takoma are hip again. Just check the mighty Tompkins Square and Strange Attractors labels for the proof in the pudding.

Matt Baldwin, raised in California's rustic Pacific Grove, educated in the alternative mecca of Berkeley, sits in the center of this quiet, swirling scene. He is the visionary wildcard of today's solo guitar music, the ambitious fever dreamer, the serpent in the grass. Towering tall with long blonde locks, he conjures from his axe dark and mystical realms. He calls his music "New Age," and he may not be joking.

Featured on Tompkins Square's 2006 Berkeley Guitar LP, Baldwin now steps into his own with his debut solo release. Unlike many of his peers, he looks beyond the traditions of Fahey (whom he calls "a teacher," not a god), bringing portentous and progressive elements into his music, alongside a dreamy country lilt. He covers Krautrock legends Neu! ("Weissensee") and metal Vikings Judas Priest ("Winter"), and culls inspiration from prog heroes Yes on the closing epic "Rainbow." His music comes on like a creeping moss, verdant but threatening, comforting yet unsettling. It will work its way inside you.

30-second MP3 excerpts:

Weissensee
Jealous Woman
Winter
Eulogy & Dark
Rainbow

Artist: CARR, MILLER AND THE SHALANTS Title: Passage Through The Wilderness Vol. 2
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
DAD104
Price: $13.00 Label: American Dust
Release
Date:
3/17/08
***The sound of Miller Carr's debut album (self-titled, on Isota Records) was once described in "what if" terms. As in, "what if Tom Waits was born in Kingston, moved to Detroit to record a Smokey Robinson-produced album with the Velvet Underground as his backing band?" And it really does sound like that.

But where Carr's first album condensed these varied influences, his latest (and first to be billed alongside his squirrelly, innovative band The Shalants) spreads them out and gives them space. Dark, dub-influenced, lyrically dense epics ("Monk and The Middle Child"); perfect playful slices of '60s AM radio pop ("Hey La"); urgent, propulsive pleas ("When It Comes Down..."); and a slippery, original surf song ("Katsu") all share space on this modern masterpiece.

The album's title, Passage Through Wilderness (part two of the Wilderness trilogy), not only speaks to the mania and wonder of the album's concept, but also nods to Miller's years spent growing up in the idyllic, alpine wilderness of Northern California's Shasta County. It's a shot of his own journeys and experiences blown up movie size. The dreamy, foggy soundtrack to a long-lost Terrence Malick film.

The band's predilection for vintage instruments and self-recorded analog sounds recalls the bold adventures of The Walkmen or Liars, while the songwriting's mesh of Bob Dylan's wide-eyed young diatribes and Todd Rundgren's blue-eyed soul is securely in sync with fellow travelers such as Cass McCombs, Ed Harcourt, and Richard Swift.

"...as sharp and clever as a John Coltrane cut yet as sleazy and intense as the Velvet Underground at their best. It is unsettling, eerie and yet strangely welcoming." --Incendiarymag.com

"[Carr's] driven songwriting is more retrospective than introspective, as if he's slowly turning around, Fonzie-like, to look at the world again and again, finding a carousel with organ-driven smoke lapping softly at the ceiling." --SF Bay Guardian

"This is music for heat waves and minor floods, or at least for the kinds of small, crowded venues where the walls are beaded with sweat and the singer can barely be seen through a haze of humidity and cigarette smoke." --Popsheep

Artist: DEPARTMENT OF EAGLES Title: The Cold Nose
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
DAD102
Price: $13.00 Label: American Dust
Release
Date:
7/23/07
***Known for some time now as "America's greatest semi-active band," Fred Nicolaus and Daniel Rossen's Department of Eagles have beguiled music fans at slow and steady pace for just over four years.

Their debut album, the Whitey On The Moon UK LP (titled as an homage to the band's former name), sounded like nothing else at the time of its first release in October of 2003. No one had ever heard such distinctive, experimental, beat-driven montages laid next to such exquisitely structured pop songs, all laced with playful and witty undercurrents. Imagine The Notwist, Randy Newman, Underworld, and Ween accidentally booking the same studio time, and you get the idea. Rossen, who sings most of the Department of Eagles' songs and plays most of the stringed instruments on the album, is currently one of the main songwriters and vocalists for the highly acclaimed Warp Records act Grizzly Bear. He and Nicolaus have had the Department of Eagles on hiatus for a while now, but are currently working on the follow- up to their stellar debut.

Sadly, despite a considerable amount of attention the band has garnered through gushing reviews, strong word-of-mouth, and Rossen's membership in Grizzly Bear, the Whitey on The Moon UK album has mostly been unavailable in North America for the better part of a year. It is now available again (under the album's European title The Cold Nose), with four bonus tracks.

Artist: PORT O'BRIEN Title: Wind And The Swell
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
DAD103
Price: $13.00 Label: American Dust
Release
Date:
7/23/07
***Though raised in the small coastal town of Cambria, CA, Van Pierszalowski spent his summers on Kodiak Island in Alaska, where his father works as a commercial salmon fisherman. Every summer, Pierszalowski works on his father's boat, The Shawnee. The work is intense (20-hour days, week after week without touching land, no showers or toilets, stormy seas), but ultimately rewarding (beauty, inspiration, and money).

Inspired by his time at sea, Pierszalowski began composing the songs on The Wind and the Swell during the summer of 2005, and named his band Port O'Brien after a now-abandoned cannery site where his parents met in the late '60s. The songs showcase the paradox between the band's ferocity and its tenderness. The male and female vocal counterpoint and the urgent rushes of instrumentation mid-song meet with the gentle strum of acoustic guitars and wistful imagery of the sea. These songs present music as a document of experience, shot through with pathos, imagination, enthusiasm, and warmth.

Over the past couple of years, Port O'Brien has evolved into a full four-piece band, and currently performsall around California. Onstage, their youthful vigor (the average age of the members is 21) complements their folkish sound in a way that feels exciting and new, as if Cap'n Jazz were translating a set of Will Oldham's most approachable material. With a flurry of online attention in the past couple of months, it's likely that a year from now the name Port O'Brien will be on the tips of everyone's tongue. For now, we can all be in on the secret and then proudly say we knew about them before anyone else.
