***Apache is just looking for a good time. With songs like "Sugar Glidin'" and "Russian Roulette," the boys are here to party!

Signed amidst broken limbs, before Birdman even heard one note, Apache now brings forth their first diamond-- Boomtown Gems. Described as Kiss meets The Ramones meets The New York Dolls, the albums sways and moves to the groove of that '70s glam/punk thing. The songs are rock n' roll club hits with elements of '70s pop, glam, and rock, and feature some serious stadium drums. One after the next, they hit like a "White Hammer." Boomtown Gems was recorded and produced at Screaming Viking Studios with Matthew Johnson and Apache, and mixed at New And Improved Recordings with Eli Crews.

Featuring members of The Cuts, Parchman Farm, Ghenghis Khan, and others, Apache is simply a band of four dudes. One guitar. One bass. One drummer. One singer. The big guy sings falsetto, while the surfer bro behind the kit bangs out beats heavy enough to ride any wave. The guitar player is some sorta reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix meeting Kurt Cobain in a dark club in New York City. And the frontman, leading the charge...he is simply known as Apache.

"Just when it seems that no one can really effectively duplicate the early-'70s glam sound, along comes Apache from San Francisco with a ramrodding, yet slovenly swing that booms and crushes those notions into a fine powder." --Victim of Time

"If the Zeroes had been into The Quick but also quietly listened to a good bit of Alice Cooper, they would have likely sounded like this..." --Douchemaster Records

***The power of The Apes is unleashed on the new classic blitz Baba's Mountain. The merging of the rage and energy of their live shows-- also known as massive riffage-- with studio wizardry began with last year's Tapestry Mastery. As always, a visionary epic story links it all together. You gotta have a visionary epic story. Without that, why bother? Baba's Mountain rocks, grooves, and takes you on a ride. Figure it out.

One has to admire The Apes for their consistency, having changed little over the course of their career. If there's been any perceptible evolution, it's a thickening, a movement toward the modern no-wave of bands like Lightning Bolt, The Locust, and Pink and Brown. The abrasiveness quotient is at an all-time high...While The Apes lack guitar, they've got this one organ sound that mimics a growling, overdriven axe with startling fidelity, and which, along with the deep waves of the low end, ballasts the mutant barrelhouse boogie... This level of intensity is maintained throughout: low elastic drones, busy atmospheres, a rich palette of sonic embellishments, oscillating frequencies and coagulated noise... Seems like success to me. --Brian Howe, pitchformmedia.com

***Coming from Houston, settling in Oakland, friend to the Cuts, loved by the Modey Lemon. Makes sense this acid-tinged, macabre piece of beauty falls on the lap of Birdman. Think Roky Erickson, Syd Barret, Mayo Thompson, post-ax wielding Skip Spence; the songs on Medicine Fuck Dream are hypnotizing, mind-altering, dark, fuzzy bits about love, love and death, love and war, and Technicolor love from the leader of Texas' Mirrors (not the old Mirrors from yesteryear). Greg Ashley has a new band called The Gris Gris, whose Birdman debut will be coming early next year. Ashley will be touring with the Gris Gris during the last months of 2003 playing songs from Medicine Fuck Dream as well as others.

Greg Ashley is a troubled young man and that's the good news. He writes and sings like he's felt it ten times harder than you hear it. Listen the second time and the avalanche catches up to you quickly. This kid's a star and recognition begins right now. --Greg Dulli, 2003

***Greg Ashley, mastermind behind The Gris Gris and The Mirrors, is going solo for the first time since his 1993 masterpiece Medicine Fuck Dream. The result, Painted Garden, is Ashley's most ambitious, textured, beautiful and dark record to date. Warmer and more intimate than Gris Gris' 2005 garage-psych stunner For The Season, Painted Garden still reflects the same vision behind that band's greatness.

Written in the burnt-out ghettos of Oakland and in Ashley's remote East Texas cabin, the album's ten songs drip with the psychedelic flair that turned on cats such as Roky Erikson, Mayo Thompson and Skip Spence (and more recently Vetiver, Six Organs of Admittance, and Devendra Banhart).

Beautifully orchestrated, sometimes fragile and always fuzzy, the album features great tunes, proof that the young songwriter's star is still on the rise. Written, produced and performed almost entirely by the artist, Painted Garden is a true vision realized, and puts Ashley right up there with the great musical minds of the day.

***Birdman Records has released the fourth full-length solo record by the one-man-alien-band Bob Log III. My Shit Is Perfect smells of past Doo Rag brilliance, finding Log showcasing his slide guitar virtuosity, unusual but butt-shaking polyrhythmic beatitude, and, as loved and expected, his demented take on humanity. How does he do all of the amazing things he does? It is truly mystifying, even to him.

The album's cover concept: Colorforms. The cover comes as a blank stage with stick-ons of Log (cut up into appendages and trunk) and his usual pals by his side (inflatable raft, party accessories, etc.), enabling the owner to create and recreate his or her own cover!

Performing behind a motorcycle helmet, Bob Log III has garnered curiosity and speculation as to his true identity. Is he truly the man that fronted Doo Rag in the early '90s? Is he Andy Kaufman? Or thrill-seeker Evel Knievel? All are valid questions, and questions that Log promises to address on tour after My Shit Is Perfect is released.

BMR28
Price: $12.00 Label: Birdman
Release
Date:

***Spazmo-transonic rhythm: first came the idea, then came the action and then it got hot. Like the birth of the atomic age - and, what the hell, its deeply troubled adolescence - a first-time Boredoms experience stuns with sheer brilliance. It's an event after the occurrence of which there is no going back. By turns manic and explosive, brooding and quiet, whimsical and awkward, the Boredoms rock harder, wilder, and cooler than the most chest-puffing metalheads and cock-o'-the-walk rappers. And even when their self-invented "Bore-language" hits a peak in barbarous density, naive and spastic introspection usurps all expectations. If ever there was band that could transform shorted circuitry into a sublime maelstrom, it's this Osaka goon show.

Vision Creation Newsun follows the groovitude of the much-loved Super Are with additional funkiness and space-time continuosity. It is funk, it is trance, it is drum'n'bass, and it is wayyyyyy psychedelic. The Boredoms' pirouettes into new musical highs with each subsequent release have consistently impressed the world's rich supply of joyless humbugs, impressed the clinically indifferent, and amazed the unamazeable. They've been doing it for years. The same reliable line-up - vocalist Yamantaka Eye leading a celebratory loin-cloth journey to the heart of the sun; guitarist Yamamoto Seiichi surfing grooves effortlessly with the silkiest pickin' since Ry Cooder discovered Sangria; Yoshimi P-we adding her graceful-as-the-kitchen-sink drumming style while keeping it with the corps; plus a new starship trooper who just pushes the beat farther into space - that has always created music for all 'noids to rejoice to.

Artist: BREAST FED YAK Title: Get Your Greasy Head Off The Sham
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
BMR042
Price: $12.00 Label: Birdman
Release
Date:
2/10/03
***According to Paul Lemos, an original member of the NY-based experimental/industrial group Controlled Bleeding, his new Breast Fed Yak project "ha[s] completely put aside all electronics on these new recordings [and have gone] back to something much more primal...." Indeed: imagine a naked, 350-pound superhero scatting like Ella Fitzgerald having an epileptic fit (longtime Controlled Bleeding collaborator Joe Papa) backed by a band of Plutonians (Lemos and Yoshida Tatsuya of Ruins) who challenge their instruments to defy the electricity coming out of their 50,000 fingertips. With influences that include Ennio Morricone, Albert Ayler, Captain Beefheart, Sun Ra, and spy movie themes, Get Your Greasy Head Off The Sham mocks classification that terms such as "soul-pain," "dis-funk," and "Sunset Stripped R&B spasmcore" try to capture. With guest appearances by Hakan Almkvist (of Ensemble Nimbus fame) on sitar and The Holy Trinity High School Detention Choir, this music on this album, according to Birdman, will kill you, although not without saving you the last dance at your funeral.

Biographical info

Paul Lemos's work in Controlled Bleeding leans toward classical structure yet still retains a surrealist texture with an embrace of feedback, noise, and groundbreaking recording techniques. Lemos is also known as a respected compiler of tracks for industrial/ experimental music compilation series Dry Lungs-- essential listening for anyone interested in the different and unconventional.

A member of Controlled Bleeding since the mid-'80s, Joe Papa brought a ethereal/gothic vibe to the band. In 1998 he was a Long Island Music Awards nominee for best male vocalist on an indie label. For Get Your Greasy Head Off The Sham, he poses inside the CD book as a thumb-sucking adult baby; an attached birth announcement reveals all sorts of little known biographical details, such as his full name, birth weight, ambitions, turn-ons (which include "acorn sculpture"), turn-offs, personal philosophy, personal fantasy ("to make love on top of the Eiffel Tower, covered in mint jelly"), and so on.

Yoshida Tatsuya is the brainchild behind legendary Japanese rhythm-section duo Ruins, a band he formed in 1985 who have continually astonished many for their dense fusion of hardcore energy, prog-rock theatrics and free-improv virtuosity. He recently appeared on Controlled Bleeding's Can You Smell the Rain Between album (released by Tone Casualties), from which the opening track on Get Your Greasy Head Off The Sham is a remix.

***Combining the classic trappings of '60s psychedelic guitar rock with an eccentric spirituality, Brother JT records are deep, penetrable and seek to entertain. He has racked up a multitude of impeccable releases on a multitude of independent record labels with impeccable taste. His palette expands with each passing release. Heavy pop, thick with guitars, thumping drums and stoned, tremulous melodies takes the listener on a trip through the complex patterns and designs that are unique to the mind of JT. From stretched-out zoner wail to agile, psychedelic strum, his body of work is singular, odd, outstanding and unimpeachable. It's a pretty tall order to name a contemporary artist with enough panache to carry on the legacy of wrecked pop and what writer Byron Coley would call "Blieb Alien rock" left behind by the likes of Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson, Skip Spence and sandbox-era Brian Wilson, but Brother JT is the only name worthy to stand alongside.

*There is only one Brother JT. Any psychedelic/garage/underground rock 'n' roll enthusiast knows this man from Bethlehem who bangs to his own lysergic drum-- the one who came from '80s Back From The Grave revivalists The Original Sins and entered the solo world through the ultra-limited edition records on the now legendary Twisted Village label. Over the last three decades he has defined the underground aesthetic, and his new record finds him still in peak songwriting and recording form.

Third Ear Candy, his latest release on Birdman Records, is danceable, trance-able, romance-able and oh-so-very hallucinatory (-able). This slab of digital wax has a little more moog than usual, a little more groove: "I am the blob and I'm here to save you from your problems, so give me a job," JT suggests on the low-pulsing second track. And he means it. He can save you. He can plug electricity through an amplifier and fuzz your mind anytime. There is a reason why Arthur Magazine, Mojo, Ptolmeaic Terrescope, and hundreds of blogs call his name the defining voice of home-made psychedelia. He is that good and that consistent.

With wonderful drawings by the Brother himself, Third Ear Candy will light your mind on fire. Pure and simple. It is time to testify.

Give the guy a job.

Coyote formed when members of the Holy Fallout, Excelsior and The Rabble Rousers convened in a West Philadelphia basement. ***They say the third time's the charm and on The Cuts latest, From Here On Out, the group delivers on the promise hinted at the first two times around. This album is the perfect distillation of garage pop, proto-punk, power pop, '70s glam and West coast jangle.

Secluding themselves in a remote recording studio in Northern California for a lengthy stay with producer Matthew Smith (Outrageous Cherry), the quartet came up with an album that perfectly encapsulates everything the band is about. It's a perfect rock n' roll record, with sweeping, swirling guitar lines, a deep groove, great melodies and hooks aplenty. Andy Jordan yelps 'n' gulps like a less angst-ridden Richard Hell (or a less precious Tom Verlaine) while the band cranks out songs overflowing with lavender keyboards, Raspberries-esque harmonies, chiming guitars and shuffling, danceable up-beats. You know, that lovely stuff that smokes-n-boogies, too, just like they used to make.

From Here On Out is a stunning collection showcasing the band's delightful tunefulness on a range of fine tracks. But despite their obvious songwriting savvy and overt pop leanings, The Cuts pound away in such a non-wimpy manner that there's no question what they're making is genuine rock 'n' roll music. They might just be the best exemplar of this kind of tuneful dynamism since the '70s heyday of artists like Nick Lowe, The Talking Heads, Sparks and The Shoes. Indeed, The Cuts could easily be destined for the same kind of mass appeal.

***The Cuts are four twenty-somethings from Oakland, California, who make some of the best garage pop that you'll find today. The Cuts' wild sonic tantrums and lust-scorched anthems are so soaked in Nuggets history it's hard to believe they weren't conceived in the same fertile musical ground that produced bands like the Sonics and ? and the Mysterians. The band blends old-school, psychedelic garage with '70s NYC proto-punk noise (a couple songs are so Television it's crazy)-- but these guys make the blend seamless. The guitars come off cheap and messy; the vocals are amped, snotty, and slightly distorted; the keyboards whiz around like some woozy Dennis Hopper drug sequence, and the rhythms switch between jangling so loosely they're gonna slip right out of your speakers and getting wound so tight they're gonna snap.

The band released their debut album as a vinyl-only edition on Mark Murman's Rock n' Roll Blitzkrieg Records (watch for Birdman to issue it on CD in 2003) and, though low profile in record stores, it received rave reviews. For their second album The Cuts drove down to Memphis and recorded at Easley Studios with Greg Cartwright (Oblivians, Compulsive Gamblers, Reigning Sound) at the control board. This album promises to be a straight up classic!

***Modern day psychedelia-- coming right at you with lightning speed. The Cuts' self-titled LP is finally available on everyone's favorite digital format! Several years ago rock scribe and all around tastemaker Mark Murman released this album on vinyl on his superb Rock'n'Roll Blitzkrieg label. The Cuts had already released a single for Lookout Records that displayed a straight-ahead punk/garage/rock'n'roll style a la DMZ or the Real Kids (and no one currently alive on Earth does not absolutely adore DMZ and the Real Kids), but by the time they recorded their first full-length they had already moved on to a more psychedelic sound (by way of late '70s NYC). Did someone say "13th Floor Elevators meets Television"? The Cuts stand apart from any contemporary garage rock purveyors. Tough as nails, neurotic, simplistic, big, deep, catchy and devastating all at the same time. Genuine decathlon scorch.

Set free after one EP and left to their own devices, The Cuts retreated to a muddy woods where they stumbled across Sky Saxon declaring himself as their own personal Yoda. Taking what they needed and ignoring his cosmic declarations they wandered back to the bright streets.... This ain't the fake "look at my white belt" garage rock. It's dirty fuzz invented the day before psychedelic rock (the war and LSD terror, not the flowers-and-weed scene). Even when they sound like they wannna have a good time, you're waiting for someone to sneak up from behind and stick a knife in your back. --Smashin' Transistors

***"There aren't many shamans still in our world. Most have been ground down to dust, and those left are laying low, hoping to dodge the bullets surely headed their way by the pop culture police. But off the beaten path and down miles of quiet two-lanes in northern Mississippi, the trees overgrown with kudzu and the fields silent with tales too terrible to mention, lives Jim Dickinson. He is one of the last record producers who has seen all that the world of music has to offer, and continues to believe human beings playing instruments and singing songs hold the secrets of the universe.... Among those he's worked with are names big and small, hugely successful and completely unheard of; The Rolling Stones, Alex Chilton, Spiritualized, Mudhoney, etc., etc.

"As a performer, Dickinson has notched plenty of prime-time hours on sessions and stages everywhere. He's been in bands capable of setting listeners' ears on fire, and recorded songs that have permanent positions on radio playlists across the planet. But underneath it all, like the true Southern gentleman, he is a storyteller. Because no matter what form of emotional reality Dickinson is working in, he is above all else telling a tale, with his hands on a keyboard, his voice at the microphone or his body behind a recording console. He will use whatever it takes to sell that story to the listener. In that way, he is almost like an auctioneer, spinning out music as he takes the performance to its highest bid in an attempt to be better and smarter and more alive, plugged into the huge beating heart at the center of all true art forms. Now, Dickinson is stripping his talent down to its essence on Fishing with Charlie, using only words to paint the pictures he is so good at. And what potent portraits they are....

"Being from the South, Dickinson has a stake on the losing side of a war a few remember, and some cannot forget. His mesmerizing voice echoes that final irony, realizing that the deck is stacked in the house's favor, but also drawn into the game because at the end of the day it really is the only one in town. Deal the cards, throw the dice and take a leap into the ultimate drama of life...." --Bill Bentley, June 2004

  • Spoken word release from legendary Memphis session man, bandleader and producer
  • Dickinson has played and recorded with everyone from The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan to Spiritualized and Mudhoney. You know he's got some stories to tell

*** 1965 and 1969 Los Angeles' Electric Prunes recorded some of the best psychedelic/experimental/garage/punk of the era. The band is probably best remembered for their US hit "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night," though they generated a staggering amount of stellar material for a band that existed for such a short period of time. This 23-track CD is the definitive collection by these '60s psychedelic legends. Only recently have their first two classic LPs been finally made available on CD by the Collectables label (taken from nth-generation tapes and mastered atrociously, unfortunately). Now, for the first time, the 'Prunes' finest moments have been captured on the digital format in pristine sound. Taken from original master tapes and painstakingly restored and mastered under the guidance of 'Prunes leader James Lowe, these recordings have never sounded better. Collecting the best tracks from the band's first two albums, ultra-rare singles sides, demos and a hilarious radio spot for Vox wah-wah pedals, this is the only release anyone will ever need by the Electric Prunes.

***In the winter of 1967, a psychedelic-garage-punk band from Woodland Hills, California, arrived in Europe for what would be their first and last tour of the continent. On the strength of their hit single "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night," the band was welcomed with open arms by European rock fans as well as British rock royalty - they smoked out with Hendrix, partied with Brian Jones and Keith Moon, and hung out in the studio with the Beatles - but were also subjected to harassment and ridicule over the fact that their homeland was at war in Vietnam. Yep, good times, good times... Twenty days and six countries later it was all over. Luckily, on the last stop of the tour someone pushed the record button and this artifact is the result.

Stockholm '67 finds the Electric Prunes at the height of the powers. Some ninnies have griped that the 'Prunes were nothing more than a psychedelic one-hit wonder, and a studio project at best. This performance burns the criticism to the ground. Over-amplified and fuzzed to the max, the 'Prunes here are explosive, noisy and wild. This recording proves that the Electric Prunes deserve to be ranked alongside the very best bands of their era.

Birdman Records will simultaneously release a live seven-inch record of the reunited Electric Prunes from June 16, 2001 - their first live performance since 1968.

***Love is the first release from Foetus in over three years and his strongest record in a career of groundbreaking, genre-busting, dirty and blissful, dark, flourishing rock and electronics intensity. Do not file under industrial. File under Mystery. This release goes way beyond all past markers Foetus has set for the awaiting pack.

Love may have you scratching your head at, and perhaps praying for, the person for whom this is a perception of love. Love is a sweeping dramatic epic drenched in harpsichord and orchestras and sound, with jarring left turns and bombast, intensity and seduction. Love is a startling immersive journey through the sonic excitement of J.G.Thirlwell. The full length CD features a duet with Jennifer Charles of Elysian Fields.

***The new Foetus album, Vein, dissects another Foetus album, 2005's Love-- but J.G. Thirlwell has turned the idea of the remix album on its head.

To regard Vein as purely a remix album is to underestimate its intentions and ambitions. This is not Love remixed --it is Love fractured and reimagined by some of today's most notable artists, including Fennesz, Mike Patton, Jason Forrest, Tom Recchion, Matmos, and more. It is an immersive, powerful, and sometimes harrowing journey through sound and emotion. Vein was two years in the making, strewn with tears, joy, and casualties.

Vein's sleeve is once again designed by renaissance man Thirlwell in his signature palette of red, white, and black. It juxtaposes design homages from Op art, constructivism, and sportswear design via Thirlwell's unique vision, and represents the 18th instance of naming a Foetus album with a four-letter one-syllable title. As a bonus, the album also features the award-winning animated video of "Time Marches On" by Swedish director Sam Sohlberg.

***Paula Frazer is the former lead vocalist of the critically acclaimed Bay Area band Tarnation. Tarnation's releases on Warner/Reprise and 4AD showed Paula to be a singing/songwriting force to be reckoned with - her rich voice radiates beauty. Occupying the space between Patsy Cline and the Cocteau Twins, Paula takes her country-infused influences to wonderfully dark extremes. Some have called her music "country gothic" but Birdman's David Katznelson just calls it excellent. Indoor Universe is Paula's first solo effort and it is unquestionably her finest work to date. Her heavenly voice has never sounded better and the dreamy expansiveness of her music never more vibrant.

Paula Frazer grew up in Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia, and Eureka Springs, Arkansas, singing in the church choir where her father was minister and her mother played piano (it was her mother who taught Paula piano, bought her first guitar when she was nine years old, and introduced her to the music of Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, George Gershwin, Roy Orbison and the pop music of the '60s and '70s, all of which have remained big influences on her singing and songwriting). As a teenager, Paula sang with jazz groups in Arkansas, performing standards and some of her own songs. She moved to San Francisco in 1981 and since then has sung, played bass and guitar with various local bands such as Frightwig, Pleasant Day, Trial, Cloiter, Virginia Dare, and an Eastern European women's choir in Berkeley called Savina which performed mostly Bulgarian choir songs at community centers and churches.

Paula Frazer's voice swoops like a barn swallow on the last day of fall, riding hot currents for the pleasure of swooping and dipping, and not altogether concerned with destination. Hers is a beautiful voice, pure and limber. . . [Her] country phrasing is much like jazz, but no less effective for that. The effect is a trifle like an imaginary melding of Joni Mitchell with k.d. lang.

***Leave The Sad Things Behind is Paula Frazer's third solo and second studio record since ending her legendary band Tarnation. Frazer's angelic vocals and masterful songwriting are framed by an all-star band-- Scott Hirsch, James Kim and Tom Heyman (Court And Spark); Oranger keyboardist Patrick Main; former Kronos Quartet cellist Joan Jeanrenaud; and other San Francisco luminaries including members of Mother Hips and American Music Club. Oldtyme sounds, symphonic wonderment, and dark layers are all exposed on Leave The Sad Things Behind. And there is still a definite Ennio Morricone influence, as well as nods to Scott Walker.

Frazer sang in her preacher father's choir as a young girl in Arkansas. She moved out to San Francisco where she played in many bands, the most famous being Tarnation which was signed by 4AD. She has played with the likes of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and The Tindersticks, both of whom share a penchant for rich soundtracks framing classic songs of warmth and sadness.

***Over the years, angelic-voiced Paula Frazer has amassed quite a catalogue of beautiful songs. She has performed in the various incarnations of Tarnation as well as with other players backing her on her solo pursuits. Her approach to songwriting is consistent; she is a firm believer in the bedroom demo recording. Alone, in her room, with her Yamaha four-track, Paula has recorded all of the songs that have made it onto her various releases, as well as countless others. Bedroom hiss plays along with the guitar and voice on these pure, fragile and haunting recordings. A Place Where I Know compiles the choicest of these recordings, taken from 1992 to 2002.

Let's Go To The Sea uses the same '60s syrup that sweetened The Thirteenth Floor Elevators' Easter Everywhere, and invites the willing on a trip through the mind of this modern songwriter as he sings of love lost and found. Add the homemade sound of legendary Brother JT, and you get an idea of what Let's Go To The Sea has to offer. The waking moments of the young Greg Ashley finds the psychedelic troubadour and guitar hero creating a new, exciting sound quartet: The Gris Gris have arrived. Rollercoasting from the surreal goodness of Ashley's Medicine Fuck Dream to Can-flavored head-bobbing environments, to that particular corner of garage rock that testified to the Detroit losers in the guise of Back From The Grave and Nuggets compilations, the Gris Gris's debut Birdman release is rock'n'roll that will save some and rattle the rest.

***Don Howland is best known for founding seminal blues-roots-deconstructionist outfits The Gibson Bros., The Bassholes and supergroup Ego Summit (with Ron House [Great Plains, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments], Jim Shepard, early Gibson Bro Tommy Jay, and Mike Rep); as well an appearance on the Cheater Slicks' Forgive Thee double-CD.

Our colleagues at Matador have praised the Bassholes' "fine unrefined distillations of Howland's various likes, from Skip James to disco, the Germs to Bob Dylan." The fine folks at Revenant also note that Howland's work "has consistently hewn closer to music's great primordial gloop than anyone since Hasil Adkins." But it took some hack at Tucson Weekly to nail it: "Howland is a blues purist with a long list of punk-related credentials... [including writing for Village Voice, Spin, New York Rocker, and Trouser Press. His] vocals possess the raw emotional depth of Rufus Thomas or Skip James, and he brandishes his six-string weapon [with] trashy exuberance... If David Johansen decided to unearth the corpse of Charley Patton and start a crude, punk-meets-Delta blues band, Howland might be elected to carry the shovel, [having been] historically aligned to the twisted and fucked up roots of Americana music." If you're still sitting there thinking, "Don Who?," it's your own damn fault, okay, igmo?

On The Land Beyond the Mountians, Howland is by himself with guitar, piano and unidentified percussive instruments. This is Howland's music how it's meant to be heard - recorded in a basement on a four-track for under fifty bucks. Darker and moodier than previous works, thanks in no small part to the covers he's chosen (Pearls Before Swine's "Sail Away," Jessie Mae Hemphill's "Cowgirl Blues," Furry Lewis's "Judge," and the Edgar Allen Poe poem "The Conqueror Worm"), Land Beyond The Mountains stands as one of his finest achievements.

***Having recorded a fistful of critically acclaimed--and increasingly successful--albums with neo-psychedelic pioneers Comets On Fire, frontman Ethan Miller lit out for fresh musical territories somewhere between the Santa Cruz, CA-based band's familiar maelstrom and a more organic, melodic, groove-oriented rock that hearkens back to his halcyon daze growing up on California's "Lost Coast" (Humboldt County), home of lumberjacks, college students, unreconstructed hippies, and off-the-grid botanists. Completing Howlin' Rain is Ian Gradek, Garett Goddard (The Cuts, Colossal Yes), Mike Jackson, Eli Eckert (Drunk Horse), and Joel Robinow (Drunk Horse).

By turns pummeling and pastoral, Howlin' Rain's sophomore Magnificent Fiend oscillates between roaring, all-stops-out, Hammond organ-driven tracks and delicate electric piano passages, topped by harmonized, often dissonant guitar lines. Toss in counter-melodic bass, sometimes quirky breaks, and extended instrumental sequences that ascend to the heavens or cascade softly, softly from the skies in sparkling showers of gunpowder and smoke. It's all held together by Miller's distinctive, crushed-velvet roar--redolent of British R&B giants Steve Marriott or Terry Reid--which extends to a sweet, plaintive falsetto; and, as the album's oxymoronic title might imply, the lyrical content.

"'70s AM rock splendor from psych supergroup. The best driving music modern money can buy." --Uncut

***Howlin Rain came together with the intention of making a good, old-fashioned, free-wheeling rock album with a bared soul and a body that hangs joy, hysteria and darkness on the same rambling bones. They play unfiltered music in all its grit and all its glory; music to beat the steering wheel of your van to or sing along with while drinking whiskey in the bathtub with your dog on a Saturday night.

Formed in 2004 in San Francisco, the band features Ethan Miller (singer and guitarist for Comets on Fire), John Moloney (shaman leader and percussionist for Boston's Sunburned Hand of the Man) and Ian Gradek (bassist, iron worker, banjo-picker and world traveler). For a group of musicians who spend most of their time playing napalm-wrecked avant-rock or underground improv, this is an opportunity to downshift and ease into some classic good-time jams-- some yin to the more experimental yang of their better known projects. Howlin Rain makes music that's not out to blow your mind but shit that's ingrained in your heart.

They draw from the resonance of The Dead, The Allman Brothers, Richard Brautigan, Exuma, Terry Reid, Golden Earring, CSNY (as well as Neil Young and Crazy Horse), Bob Dylan, Blue Cheer, CCR, Simon and Garfunkel, Randy Holden, White Heaven, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Walsh and anyone who's played piano on an album without actually knowing how to. They're equal parts dust, groove, folk, rock, dirt, mercury, earth, beer, watermelon, the Eel River and the great land that surrounds it.

At 33, Badar Ali Khan has already released 22 albums in his native Pakistan. Most recently, working with producer/arranger/composer Suresh "Baba" Varma, Badar has leaped to the forefront of his art, becoming a Qawwali superstar with Baba Records' multimillion-selling album, Good Karma 1. Blending the traditional with the contemporary, the ethereal with erotic, Badar Ali Khan has succeeded in transforming this ancient artform into something totally modern, incredibly potent and powerfully intoxicating for today's young audiences.

  • Qawwali music's rise in popularity has yet to crest
  • Khan has sold millions of records worldwide; this is his 23rd release
  • The Birdman label's crusade to return sincerity and meaning to the word "eclectic" continues
  • File under The Real, God-Loving Psychedelia, 'K'

***Qawwali's devotional themes of love come from Allah and are sung by men who belong to a Sufi tradition and trace their music back over seven hundred years to the spiritual Samah songs of Persia.

There is a long tradion of Qawwali singers in the Ali Khan family, including the man who brought Qawwali to the West-- Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Like his father, uncles and grandfathers before him, Nusrat sang with a fervor and style that reverberated within the being of all his listeners. During his lifetime, Nusrat saw his audience grow from Pakistani devotionalists to a larger, more international group comprised of many races and religions from around the world. In the 1990s, he collaborated with the likes of Eddie Vedder and Tim Robbins (Dead Man Walking soundtrack), Michael Brook, Massive Attack, and Peter Gabriel (Last Temptation of Christ). Through these collaborations, Westerners discovered the voice of Qawwali and flocked to his concerts.

When Nusrat passed away in 1997, he was at his peak in popularity. He had just completed his biggest American tour to date and was signed to a major recording company. His voice was clear, powerful and inspirational. The Final Moment documents one of the last concerts of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. His group also featured Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, who continues the Ali Kahn legacy. Longtime collaborator Baba Varma recorded this 1996 concert of ecstatic Sufi compositions, a celebration for all who attended, now a vital and loving document of the Voice of the Century.

***In 1962 exploitation filmmaker Herschell Gordon Lewis and his partner David Friedman (a former carny and future porno kingpin) abandoned nudie films and invented a new film genre. Dubbed "the godfather of gore" by John Waters, Lewis began his career in graphic grue with Blood Feast, a film that shocked and disgusted drive-in movie audiences across the country. He followed Blood Feast with a string of gore, biker, horror, juvenile delinquent, and sexploitation films that all bore his trademark style, part of which was his unique soundtrack music. Whether incidental, bluegrass, rock'n'roll or pop, the music in his films was almost always written and often performed by Lewis himself. When outside help was needed, he usually called on inept garage bands and lounge acts to do the job. The Eye Popping Sounds of Herschell Gordon Lewis collects the very best songs from his entire filmography in one bloody package for the very first time. Thirty-seven tracks in all, including rare radio spots and hilarious soundbites, and a beautiful, 24-page color booklet full of disgusting stills from his films and liner notes from the Godfather himself. This package is an absolute must for any fan of grade-Z films and trash culture. Plus 27 more ear-gouging classics!

***This colorful, charismatic group of youth, featuring George and Lou Lou Rosenthall, the children of Hank Rank (Crime), has been blasting around San Francisco since elementary school, honing a diet of Blondie, New York Dolls, The Ramones, The Recauntours-- you name it.

After two years of pre-production, Lou Lou and the Guitarfish's self-titled debut record was recorded in two days, and it cuts and scrapes through the speaker with the reckless abandon of Iggy Pop and a full jar of peanut butter. The band is wise beyond their years, showing the guitar swagger of a seasoned swinger and vocals that are as self-assured as the subject matter. These kids want to be heard, and they will get your attention any way they can. Raised in a museum of music and wonderments, home-schooled on the life of an artist/musician, they play their version of powerful rock with a style similar to pre-junk Thunders and with lyrics as biting as Patti Smith (check out "Hit Me").

Youth of today, unite. The revolution is in the hands of the young-- Lou Lou and the Guitarfish.

***A chance meeting around an axe-wound-shaped microphone and Mahikari is born. On one side, world-famous Acid Mothers Temple guitar god Kamoto Kawabata. Showblazing on stage other is Seiichi Yamamoto, the guitarist ending The Boredoms' sound from the beginning to Vision Creation Newsun. Two of the greatest guitar players of all time cut mind-churning psychedelic meltdowns with ex-Thin White Rope bassist Stoo Odom, following the path paved by their respective bands as well as Fushitsusha, Solmania, CCCC, KK Null, and Highrise.

The first Mahikari record is a blistering colossal attack of legendary proportions, available on super-limited-edition vinyl.

"One listen to the project Mahikari and I'm reminded of precisely the Sonic Youth moments I adore. Each album from the seminal New York band contains a place-- a track or a space-- where discord is laid aside, revealing truly gritty rock and rhythm: it is in these moments that Mahikari plies its curious breed of guitar fury.... Kawabata and Yamamoto unite to layer an abundance of grit and substance into the mix of each moment. It's chaotic for sure, but carefully chaotic, and something that isn't digestible in one listen.... For fans of Thurston Moore's The Trees Outside the Academy, this will be a companion treat: something that captures the essence of full-blown psychedelic rock meltdowns while grasping the lovely catharsis that comes quickly after." --Erick Mertz

***Bearded, dirty, and riding the brink of the stoner rock revolution, the new heroes of thee electric guitar mayhem, Midnite Snake are a Pittsburgh power trio who play instrumental acid rock until death does part. Alexei Plotnicov on electric guitar, Jim Lingo on electric bass, on drums Paul Quattrone (of Modey Lemon greatness), and Fog Hog on electric fog deliver supreme feedback over-drive psycho rock. These monsters will be touring the United States (especially the East Side) upon album release. Already buzzing in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, so look out.

Midnite Snake are no slouches in the business of overwhelming unassuming audiences with their fuzzed-out ritualistic jams. Chalk it up to their extended guitar freakouts, a relentlessly pummeling rhythm section and a hyperactive smoke machine that often all but obscures bassist Jim Lingo, guitarist Alexei Plotnicov and drummer Paul Quattrone in a pungent issue as thick and primal as the racket the trio summons up.... Plotnicov [unleashes] psychedelic, bluesy solos that sizzle like unstable isotopes atop Lingo and Quattrone's bedrock-solid riff-mantras. --Adam MacGregor, Pittsburgh Pulp

***Goddamn the Midnite Snake! Like a bat out of hell, these heavy psych-metal stalwarts are back with a sophomore release that might just erupt Mount Olympus. This fresh slab of digital drudgery presents songs that are longer and deeper than anything the Snake has done before. It possesses the richness of a dark and deathly metal, but now adds layers of wandering prowess, like a lost soul in Young Goodman Brownis devil-riding forest, looking for his Faith upon which to rest his head. But none is to be found. Midnite Snakeis instrumental intensity would make a late-era Coltrane and current-era Acid Motheris Temple want to get back on the road again, just so they could check out the band night after night and steal all their secrets.

Shaving the Angel is bigger and more powerful than their debutocomplex, sexually bombastic metallic rock and rollowith a hint of forest acoustic darkness breaking through the wall of whiteness. Evil like the naked, mask-covered ritual sacrifice on the cover. Modey Lemon drum king Paul Quattrone unleashes a beat that frees guitar god Alexei Plotnicov from the brimstone of Pittsburgh, riffing hard in heaven with Hendrix. This record plays loud at a soft volume, and is sure to cement their place in the hearts and souls of all the stoned rockers foreverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

***Multi-instrumentalist Greg Ashley has gained acclaim and recognition as frontman of Oakland's incredible Gris Gris, a band who combine Syd-era Floyd psychedelia, VU drone and '60s garage rock. In an attempt to release all things Gris Gris, Birdman excavates Ashley's earlier works to showcase his talents in their formative stages while keeping these jewels in print.

Ashley started playing with The Mirrors as a nineteen-year-old in Texas. In 2001 the band released the vinyl-only A Green Dream (since re-issued by Birdman) which caught the interest of Fleece Records which in turn released the band's second full-length, 13 Patient Flowers, now proudly reissued by Birdman.

Released posthumously in 2003, the album combines hotheaded retro-rock with groovy ballads, tinny xylophone, feng shui recitations and occasionally a confusion that approaches the Sun City Girls. Pervading it all is an acid-drenched folky psychedelia that would make fellow Texan Roky Erickson proud. An early hint of the Gris Gris to come.

In the interim, any number of shallow-hearted Xerox pretenders to some blues/garage/punk-rock throne have snuck through this back door to assail, insult and degrade our beloved noise, until it's little more than a catalog of pouts and poses that amount to zilch.

We need bands willing to claw back the magic and mythology of rock 'n' roll, to give us something we can really sink our teeth into, art that's hot-blooded and literate and impassioned, something deep and tangible that'll stir the spook in our souls. A band like Pittsburgh, PA's Modey Lemon. It would figure that a band like Modey Lemon would hail from the town that gave the world George Romero and Night of the Living Dead. Modey Lemon's songs conjure images of mechanical dinosaurs, cemetaries and the entire universe coming undone.

The Curious City, Modey's third full length, is their strongest and most adventurous release to date. Ten tracks of metal mayhem, psych sickness and all-out rock 'n' roll psychosis. Be afraid.

A lot of hyperbole has been spewed about Pittsburgh's Modey Lemon and with good reason. The two-piece has toured the US, UK and Australia, blowing away audiences with their over-amplified, art-damaged, garage punk metal. Lead singer / guitarist / synth-player Phil Boyd receives as much attention for his Calvin Klein good looks as he does his musical prowess, and drummer Paul Quatrone is the most wildly accomplished rock percussionist since Neil Peart. A plethora of enthusiastic press, a deal with giant UK label Mute, a bevy of nubile groupies, and a coveted place on the Birdman Records roster-- some bands get all the breaks.

Predator features the stand-out title track taken from Thunder + Lightning, a new alternate version of "Tongues (Everybody's Got One)," as well as three new scorchers that are guaranteed rock you in exactly the way you'd hope to be rocked.

***The last two years have been very, very interesting for the Pittsburgh's most loved sons, Modey Lemon. After signing with Mute Records in the UK and opening for Dinosaur Jr. at San Francisco's granddaddy of all venues, The Fillmore, the band took some time off to regroup and work on new material. The result is Season of Sweets.

With one foot in the sci-fi darkness of their last record, Curious City, one foot in their past angst-ridden garage wreckage, and one foot in the kautrock brilliance of the German Frontier (what, three feet?), Season of Sweets is a fuzzed-out, driving masterpiece with catchy hooks beaten to death by guitar/synth mayhem. Driven by drummer extraordinaire Paul Quattrone, the songs twist and turn through the imagery and dark rock that has made Modey Lemon famous. Jason Kirker (engineer as well as band member) uses various keyboards, Moog synthesizers, and other instruments to flesh out the sound. At the heart of this album is the energy and mysticism of singer Phil Boyd. As primitive as they are futuristic, Modey Lemon recreates the present, molecule by molecule, every second of every breath.

"Modey Lemon [is] a perfectly capable band with obvious influences, attacking proto-punk and garage rock with aplomb, ability, and a glint of self-awareness." --Pitchfork

Hailing from Pittsburgh, PA (home of George Romero) and clocking in at barely 20 years of age, The Modey Lemon have developed a sound unlike anyone else's. Guitar, drums and Moog synthesizer, equal parts late '60s hard rock, early '70s hard rock, and early '90s grunge filtered through punk from all three decades. This inventive, creative duo are caked in gritty, high-wattage garage punk and B-movie rock'n'roll, a twisted influence of greaser / garage rock sounds, adjusted with an art punk mentality, channeled through some big amp rawk. This album is packed full of rock nuggets with dirty boogie tempos and challenges the listener with nontraditional ideas. Everything from The Cramps to Iron Maiden to Beck goes into the blender, gets distilled, and comes out one very lethal brew.

Drummer Paul Quattrone is a human whirlwind - the best since Keith Moon or Neil Peart. Frontman Phil Boyd wails like a Banshee and looks like a Calvin Klein model. ***Celebrating 17 years of a great idea, Monkeywrench returns with a new studio album, their first since 2000's Electric Children. Putting together the progenitors of the modern underground--Mark Arm and Steve Turner of Mudhoney fame, Tim Kerr (Poison 13, King Sound Quartet, The Big Boys), Gas Huffer's Tom Price, and Martin Bland (Lubricated Goat)-- Monkeywrench is nothing less than a punk/grunge supergroup.

. The band kicks out the same glorious, fuzz-laden mess that characterizes Mudhoney's work, but there are notable differences here: Monkeywrench has a twisted take on everything from country to psychedelic and offers impressive bluesy guitar playing. There is a Texas roots taste spread through the tracks and the rhythm section lays down a fast and furious groove (Turner's bass playing is outstanding) while dueling guitars engage in a race to the finish line. Yoshimi of Boredoms / Free Kitten on guitar and vocals, Kyoko on guitar and vocals, Maki on bass, and Yoshiko on drums recognize no one musical style but manage to touch on nearly all of them. New wave, no wave, pop, punk, electronic, trance - it swirls organically in every direction. Like the Boredoms, there is a prevalent primal groove reccuring throughout, yet it is so melodic in parts as to be almost accessible (for a Boredoms-related project, that is).

If you want to look at OOIOO for its patterns, you'll find them both in the band's name and in their quirky loops of sound. It's a patchwork, but it's not a Grandma's quilt. It's more like OOIOO set out to make a blanket and ended up with a Juicemaster.Oe the manic experimentalism of the Boredoms seems to be boxing the avant-grrl relentlessness of Free Kitten. The catch is, neither wins - they just keep slugging away. . . [W]hat sounds like a spoon hitting different sized glasses . . . eventually gets lost behind crazy power chords and general babbling. . . [A] steady bass beat disintegrates beneath what sounds like a theremin being bludgeoned with a balpeen hammer, but then the beat comes back from out of nowhere. It gets even weirder...OOIOO give another face to the kitsch world of Japanese noise rock.

Inspired by The Boredoms, early Ween, and Add N To X, the group has created an underground following in New York City. Their fans visit PFFR's one-of-a-kind shows for the comedy, cynicism, rage and euphoria, but they stick around for the unique blend of synthesizers, guitars and noise. After several seven-inch records released by obscure French labels (all sold out), United We Doth is their first compact disc. Every instrument is used, every yowl rings of freedom. Frequently fantastic, incorrect, loose-limbed and choking on horsehair, PFFR is the final knife fight between theory and vehement concrete specimen. United We Doth answers the eternal question "Would I?" with a resounding "Hair-lip."

PFFR shows are known to be colorful, bizarre events (light show, costumes, interactions with audience body parts, flying objects) that shock the customarily unflappable DJs and seen-it-all dancers around them. Tours of both coasts are imminent.

This enhanced CD features videos for "Our Concern," "Japoney Appoe," and "Superfine" (reminiscent of Smegma's backwoods DIY Brain Follies videos).

***The bulk of the material on Tom Recchion's second album for Birdman was recorded just after the completion of Chaotica in the mid-'80s, and sounds like a natural continuation of that record (despite the absence of any Esquivel). Recchion is assisted on some tracks by noted musician, composer, author, journalist for The Wire, and music curator David Toop (himself a collaborator with Eno, Jon Hassell, John Zorn, Talvin Singh, Adrian Sherwood, and Scanner). Recchion labored on I Love My Organ, for years and years; dark and atmospheric, it is simultaneously creepy and relaxing lounge music for psychotics.

Tom Recchion has been a notable personality in the Los Angeles underground avant-garde experimental music scene since the '70s, having been a founding member of the Los Angeles Free Music Society, art rock band B People, and creepodelic quartet Extended Organ. He's collaborated with the likes of Keiji Haino, David Toop, and done numerous installations at galleries in the United States and abroad. There's even a planned collaboration with the Kronos Quartet in the works. In 1996 Birdman released Recchion's first solo album, an astounding sound collage of looped, manipulated, and extrapolated music by Esquivel. Like soundtrack music to a never-before-seen David Lynch film, Chaotica sounded remarkably fresh and timely when released (even though it had been recorded at least 10 years earlier).

***A few years ago, Sonic Boom (Spaceman 3, Spectrum, EAR) traveled to Independence, Mississippi to work with legendary producer Jim Dickinson, a.k.a. Captain Memphis. The result is Indian Giver, a true collaboration where the two artists share both a stage and their musical visions. "The Lonesome Death Of Johnny Ace," an epic, southern-fried biographical groover, tells the tale of a famous singer's Christmas Day Russian roulette tragedy.

The rest of the album finds Boom revisiting his past: a new, fuzzier rendition of Mudhoney's "When Tomorrow Hits," a revamped version of ultra-rare Spectrum popper "Take Your Time," and Spaceman 3 staple "Hey Man (Amen)," where Dickinson throws down some back-ups. The Dickinson tunes are brand new and eerie, with his recitations backed by ecstatic symphonies. The record is book ended by new Spectrum number "Mary," which carries with it a decidedly Neu! theme.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime musical meeting, and the resultant album could only have come from these two musical icons.

Please welcome The Spider Bags: hailing from North Carolina, out of nowhere but with the sound of a vintage anti-establishment America, fueled by whiskey and the treads of a long, harshly departed woman. The Spider Bags' A Celebration of Hunger was recorded in a whirlwind, with the six-piece band huddling around a microphone and preaching the country / punk / garage gospel with Shane MacGowan toothlessly smiling, listening to the songs of drink and debauchery. Leader Dan McGee is the new great American songwriter-on-the-dole, whose multi-purposed voice sings of two things: girls and women, and does so with some of the most impressive lyrics to come out of an American since Nick Cave... no... hmmm... Shane... no, he is from Ireland... damn... well, in the tradition of all those greats who steal from the Americana ethos and make careers out of doing so. We bring to you The Spider Bags, the first great European-stealing Americana band from America. Let freedom reign.

An appealing mix of rock and country/roots influences ... sounds like music to break beer bottles to. --The Oak Room

***If trash-punk guitar virtuoso Bob Stinson had a way of making fellow musicians feel like it was him and them against the world, most of these musicians also got the impression that the world was winning. Recorded in 1989 and 1990 by Stinson's "art blues" outfit, Closer 2 Normal has remained unreleased until now, half a decade after The Replacements guitarist's death. Static Taxi stands as perhaps the best snapshot of Stinson's genius out of the shadow of the 'Mats. The band found its sound inside a kerosene-heated train car in 1989, where four guys-- Stinson with some art-school punks and cabbies-- gathered to drink, jam, drop LSD, and record demos. By 1991 they had put to tape an album's worth of studio material before promptly folding, never having recovered from the loss of their beloved boxcar the year before, when a nearby warehouse burned down. Since Stinson's final drug spiral, it has been difficult to romanticize that era. Birdman Records has decided that the grace period has ended and these songs were worth resurrecting for more than the sake of nostalgia or the opportunity to mourn. The lyrical ache of the cascading guitar shimmer on these recordings is enough to make you weep. Stinson's springtime-sludge textures elevate Ray Reigstad's snotty choruses and jumpy rhythms to the level of great gonzoid power-pop. There was chemistry amid the chemicals of that train car-- now everyone can hear it for themselves.

*** Perry Tillis was born July 29, 1919, in Elba, Alabama, and began playing his brand of rambling blues at a very early age. He continued playing the blues and singing gospel, despite going blind, up until his death on November 3, 2004. In the '40s Tillis played the Chicago blues circuit alongside all-time greats likes Muddy Waters and Furry Lewis. However, when a revelation convinced him it was the devil's music, he moved back home and began preaching the gospel.

In 1972 Swedish music archivist Begnt Olsson tracked down Tillis down at his church in Samson, Alabama, and recorded these tracks over three sessions. He was frail and old when Olsson found him, but he played the guitar, both electric and acoustic, with a mosquito-like fragility that is truly transcendent. In an age when major pre-war blues players were being rediscovered, unknown geniuses like Tillis were still playing a style of blues (gospel) that touched upon greatness and kept alive the traditions that were inspiring the likes of The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. This CD has a hallucinatory, Velvet Underground-like groove that meanders through each hymn. The slide guitar playing is beautiful and Tillis' voice speaks of a knowledge all but lost in the 21st Century. A wonderful debut release from an unknown blues virtuoso who is missed.

***Oakland, California's enfant-terribles The Time Flys are back with another blast of rock'n'roll rebellion. Performing at the pinnacle of their powers, these guys (and gal) pick up right where their debut, Fly, left off. Together, Sir Eric "The Masher" Von Ravenson, Andy Freeze (aka Andy Jordan of The Cuts), Erin Error and Peter P. Juvenile seamlessly fuse mid '70s glam, late '70s proto-punk, and even later '70s Killed By Death-style punk to create music that, in these stale times, sounds remarkably fresh. The combination of guitar, bass, drums and attitude hasn't sounded this great since the heyday of Sire Records.

Time Flys don't simply rummage the back catalogs of the Velvets or the Voidoids; they dig deep, touching on groups like DMZ, The Real Kids, The Huns and AK-4. Unlike the kid who threw his watch out the window, the Time Flys don't dumb it down like so many balls-out punk retards-- the riffs on Rebels Of Babylon may be tough, but they're also fairly complex. In fact, The Time Flys might be the only group playing original recipe punk at this level in 2007. ***The 1996 publication of Robert Gordon's It Came From Memphis book unleashed the untold story of the underground history of the rich music scene of a little town we like to call MemphisC Tennessee. While the stories of Elvis, Sun Records, and Stax had been well documented already, the stories of Charlie Feathers, Furry Lewis, RL Burnside and Barbarian Records had yet to be told. Needless to say, owning this book, as well as the accompanying CD that featured loads of obscuro rock and blues artists, were mandatory for lovers of American music.

To coincide with Pocket Books' re-printing of It Came from Memphis(after being out of print for few years) Birdman Records is releasing a second volume of wild underground Memphis dementia, compiled by the author himself. This release is also mandatory.

Artist: V/A Title: Jim Dickinson Field Recordings - Delta Experiment Vol. 3

***Memphis musician/producer Jim Dickinson is a legend in his own right (having played keyboards on the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," performed on Bob Dylan albums, produced Big Star and Alex Chilton albums, etc., etc.) and he definitely knows a thing or two about blues roots and field recordings of legendary and should-be-legendary blues artists from the south. Dickinson captures raw and spontaneous performances from some of the most important blues artists in the Memphis / Mississippi area on these exclusive recordings by Furry Lewis, Sleepy John Estes (whose performances feature the guitar work of Ry Cooder), Otha Turner, Mose Vinson, Johnny Woods and Alec Teal. These pure examples of Delta blues were committed to tape at Sam Phillips studios, Ardent studios, the Orpheum Theater, and various fields in and around the Memphis area. Raw, gritty and real-- just how the blues should be heard.

Dickinson says, "The Blues is ... a musical tradition born from the dark prison of slavery. Torn from family and homeland, separated from custom and culture, the call and response of the African work song took on new emotional depth. A lonesome sound in the darkness-- a howling dog or passing train-- echoed by harmonica or guitar became a raw, powerful statement of hard times, long work, and fast pleasure; a voice in the southern night complaining about the human condition.

"The fleeting nature of the present creates in man the desire to capture the moment. The movement of time compels us to record. The record becomes a totem, a pageant with a potential for recurring cultural impact, a sacrament between artist and audience, an unique event preserved and repeatable."

***Fflint Central, a fantastic CDR-only label, comes from the Manchester countryside where lay lines vibrate through the fates of the local inhabitants. Whether these vibrations triggered the creation of dark, groovy soundscapes by a group of like-minded sound distortionists is anyone's guess. But the phenomena is real, and over the past few years these electronic warlords have partnered some of the most innovative, trance-enducing, psychedelic wave forms since Stockhausen's electrified Jew's Harp. All twenty-odd Fflint Central releases, which chronicle the exploits of bands such as Pendro and Berkowitz, Lake & Dahmer, have circulated underground in the form of CDRs, a medium that unfortunately protects all but fellow travelers from exposure. Yet the legendary late John Peel caught on and played them regularly. Electronic guru rags such as Wire and E/I fly the freak flag of Fflint with gusto. And with this Birdman Records release-- Malpractice, a compilation of classic cuts from the Fflint Central archives-- for the first time in history, the music is being made readily available to the public.

***For more than 10 years Jon Wahl fronted the Los Angeles skronk-punk-jazz-metal band Clawhammer, whose sound earned them a hardcore following across the country and record deals with Sympathy, Epitaph and Interscope. Jon's saxophone, harmonica and guitar abilities have landed him guest appearances on recordings by Mudhoney and several In The Red recording artists, including the Bassholes and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. On Sour Suite, his debut post-Clawhammer effort, he has taken a subtler yet equally twisted musical path. Using acoustic and electronic instruments, Sour Suite weaves a very dark and haunting musical fabric. Equal parts Eno-era Roxy Music, Tom Waits and Spike Jones, this album sounds like nothing else.

***In 1966, Peter Walker's Rainy Day Raga translated the sound of Eastern ragas into the consciousness of America's LSD generation. The record is still considered a classic of its genre, cited as a primary influence on the new psych/folk sounds of today's generation. Like the great blues guitar pickers before him, Walker disappeared from public and recorded life for decades, yet continued to practice and study all along.

Spanish Guitar is the culmination of this past era, finding Walker continuing where he left off with Rainy Day Raga, tracing his beloved Indian sound to Spain, where the gypsies redefined Spanish music and created what is now known as flamenco. This record is to flamenco what Rainy Day Raga was to raga-- an inspired sound that views all of Walker's studies with his Western lens, so unique and beautifully played that it seems like an entirely new genre.

This is a sound unlike anything elsewhere-- a transcendental sound, one that until now only belonged to the heavens.

***The Warlocks have been making a name for themselves for several years with their own brand of psychedelic rock - a swirling grind that conjures the Velvet Underground, The Stooges, Spaceman 3, Neu!, Can, and early Pink Floyd. They deliver the sounds and sights from their powerful, hallucinatory world that these synthetic times need and would do well not to ignore. At the vortex of The Warlocks's cross-fire hurricane - two drummers, four guitarists, bass and keyboards - is guitarist / bassist / lead vocalist Bobby Hecksher. He writes all of the band's songs, which range from fourteen-minute gotterdammerung assaults to pastoral acoustic-strummed meditations; from amazing pop songs to addictive guitar mayhem that anchors the trip. Hecksher was in the Brain Jonestown Massacre for a while, a few years ago, and also played on Beck's Stereo Pathetic Soul Manure album, so you know he's not just blowing smoke up your ass.

They've toured the US extensively and released two fine EPs on the Bomp label, but Phoenix is by far their finest work to date. This EP collects two songs from the full length album (upcoming in September or October 2002) - "Baby Blue" and "Stone Hearts," as well as a number of otherwise unreleased trance-inducing jams and sonic psychedelic wonders. The eight-track CDEP clocks in at over an hour.
