Release
Date:

***Duchess is the debut full-length record from Ugly Beauty (Atlantic) and Cell (Geffen) founders Christy Schnabel and Jerry Di Rienzo. After several years touring with bands like Built to Spill, Come and Blonde Redhead, landing songs on various film and television soundtracks, and appearing with Wilco on HBO's Reverb, Schnabel took time off from music to write a novel chronicling her major label trial by fire. Upon finishing the book-- due in December, 2005-- Schnabel sequestered herself in a downtown L.A. practice space with a Fender guitar, a 57 mic, a primitive 8-track and two ten-pound bags of oranges.

A week later the skeletons of ten songs emerged, later becoming the Duchess record. The album is Schnabelis vision: she writes all the songs, plays all the guitars, and sings all the vocals. Her voice, compared in the indie rags to Hope Sandoval and Patti Smith, defines the band.

  • Artist: JAWBREAKER Title: Etc.

    ***Etc. is the long-anticipated collection of A-sides, B-sides, covers and outtakes by the band Jawbreaker. Maybe you've heard of these guys.

    As one can imagine, the founding fathers of emo have quite a collection of tracks that never made it to any of their four studio albums. There's something for every mood on this Alpha-Omega of rare and previously-impossible-to-find songs.

    Presented chronologically, the journey begins in November '88 with a track recorded on the first Jawbreaker demo (before they were even known as Jawbreaker), and ends 20 songs later with the trio's final studio recording, a version of "Boxcar" re-worked at the end of the DGC Dear You sessions (hey, the studio was paid for). There's plenty of creme filling in the middle and it's all good, brother.

    The artwork for Etc. is warmly inviting to the familiar legions, who will revel in the band's track-by-track commentary and printed lyrics (courtesy of Aaron Cometbus).

    ***Jawbreaker. An influential band, to say the least. Perhaps you've heard of them? Their legacy-four studio albums and a bunch of singles-has yielded several irrefutable facts:

    (1) a significant number of fans have grown up influenced by Blake Schwarzenbach's lyrics and Jawbreaker's (once) unique hybrid of emo, pop, Slintadelia and punk;
    (2) an enormous number of bands have aped the Jawbreaker sound and approach, achieving greater success than Jawbreaker ever did (Blink 182 comes to mind) and
    (3) post-Jawbreaker offshoot bands like Jets to Brazil are pretty hard to ignore.

    Jawbreaker's implosion followed the release of Dear You, a typical scenario that plays itself out so often after bands sign to the majors that someone really oughta copyright the script. It is equally unsurprising that the Jawbreaker legend has steadily grown, to the point where it's time to begin unearthing any remaining material from the band's vaults. Enter Blackball Recordings, the nascent corporation started by the band's drummer Adam Pfahler on behalf of the group. Blackball's debut release was taped live on April 30, 1996, an unforgettable Jawbreaker show at the Warfield in San Francisco featuring three previously unreleased songs. Some time next year, the label will get together a collection of singles, compilation tracks and demos for vinyl and CD issue. Expect further mass anticipation for these recordings, and more acclaim than the band ever got when actually alive and kicking.

    Artist: WHYSALL LANE Title: S/T
    Format: CD Catalog

    Price: $12.00 Label: Blackball

    Date:

    ***Whysall Lane began in the late '90s as a solo project for singer and guitarist Richard Baluyut. While taking a break from his duties as songwriter and frontman for NYC indierock titans Versus, Baluyut walked the plank as a solo artist and began performing stripped-down sets of his "other" originals (and the odd Depeche Mode cover). He dubbed the new act Whysall Lane after a neighborhood street in his hometown of Detroit. After moving to San Francisco in 2001, Baluyut hooked up with ex-Jawbreaker drummer Adam Pfahler and SPCA Cat Behaviorist Mikel Delgado (Wussum*Pow, The Little Deaths, The Cinnamon Imperials).

    While sitting through the seventh inning stretch of a Giants vs. Mets game, the three decided to revive Baluyut's solo material in a full-on band setting. After selling out countless telephone booths and playing alongside such luminaries as Sleater- Kinney, Mission Of Burma, Imperial Teen, and Jets To Brazil, the band headed into the studio to hammer out their set. They couldn't have been happier with the result: indie-rock for people who hate indie-rock.
