Artist: ALTAIR NOUVEAU Title: Space Fortress
Format: 12" Catalog

DFA2210
Price: $7.75 Label: Dfa
Release
Date:

***Altair Nouveau consists of Brandon Mitchell, a young producer from the West Coast currently residing in San Francisco. Altair Nouveau's music, though designed with the dance floor in mind, evokes a uniquely personal element. It is the combination of these two features that gives Altair Nouveau its indistinguishable, larger-than-life, spaced-out future disco sound sure to cause a dance floor frenzy.

Raised in the sprawling city of San Jose, California, to musical parents, Mitchell grew up with the encouragement of his father, an electronic music teacher at the local community college. He began to educate himself by collecting albums from the likes of Giorgio Moroder, Vangelis, Ennio Morricone, and John Carpenter. This gave way to newer acts such as In Flagranti, Prins Thomas, Lindstrom, and several DFA artists.

The title track of his debut 12-inch, "Space Fortress," charges out of the gate on the back of a throbbing bass line with synthesizers blazing. Quickly building, it flies high then lands in a valley of rhythmic pulses before entering the whirlwind again and ascending back into the heavens.

"Showdown" is exactly that, with its slow, dramatic electronic transcendence and lush, minimal vocal harmonies.

The swirling jazz funk of "Sorcerer," full of bright and shimmering synthesizer melodies, conjures up a siren-like magic that expands beyond the far reaches of space.

***Black Dice venture further into their own psychedelic, increasingly electronic world with Creature Comforts, as expansive, experimental and structurally unique as its predecessors, yet also mixing a new sense of playfulness and accessibility with naïve wonder and not-quite-steady rhythms. Though still hazy and dreamy, Black Dice emerge as a band on untouchably original terrain, where dub, tropicalia, and the entire history of psychedelic rock swirl in a heady concoction.

Performing live alongside contemporaries such as Wolf Eyes, Sonic Youth, The Rapture, Boredoms, Lightning Bolt, Animal Collective, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Black Dice are still something of an anomaly. With plenty of critical support-- "Cone Toaster" was New York Times' Single of the Year; Beaches and Canyons made Rolling Stone editors' Top 5-- Black Dice remain provocative and uncompromising, follow their own rules, constantly reinvent themselves, and challenge listener preconceptions.

***The latest release from New York avant-garde leaders Black Dice features three brand new tracks that further refine the industrial, beat-driven direction of their last album, Broken Ear. Coinciding with the release of this 12-inch single (which includes a full-color poster designed by Bjorn Copeland), Black Dice team up with longtime friend and photographer Jason Frank Rothenberg on a collection of found images, photographs, and collages. Entitled Gore, this flexi-bound, full-color book (sold separately) documents both the making of the aforementioned album and the cut-and-paste, psychedelic aesthetic that has influenced a whole new generation of artists and musicians.

***(not actual cover art)

Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom completely flip the synth-only script and drop what might be the crown jewel in the DFA dance single stable. Black Leotard Front is actually a performance art dance troupe that includes Russom, Gonzalez, fine artist Christian Holstad and Daniel Schmidt. "Casual Friday" was created so they would have something custom-made to dance to. The results added a new name to the DFA roster-- and, apparently, one of the greatest disco records of all time. If you ever wanted to mix your sour Kraut with sweet Italo disco, welcome to the soundtrack to your mind!

The greatest 15-minute disco record of all time. Murphy and Goldsworthy sound like they took hold of the West End Records house band circa 1981 and decided to art 'em up. There's an incomprehensible lyric about confronting somebody at the office; a pealing, glassy synth wriggle that announces each sonic shift; and the funkiest, sexiest, blessedly loosest pronunciation of the word bonjour on public record; not to mention an ending that pays explicit homage to Sleezy D's apocalyptic early acid-house hit, "I've Lost Control."

DFA2200
Price: $7.75 Label: Dfa
Release
Date:

***Black Meteoric Star is the latest project by longtime DFA alumni Gavin Russom. The project is inspired equal parts Euro-disco, wonky early electronic body music from America's Midwest and an always present fascination with the outer reaches of global psychedelic rock. Gavin Russom began the recordings for Black Meteoric Star sometime in 2006. It was at this time that Carl Craig remixed Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom's single "Relevee", making it one of the years biggest dance club anthems.

Three vinyl 12" singles by Black Meteoric Star will be released on DFA Records with extended original versions in 2009 along with a full self-titled CD that edits and compiles all six singles. There will be an edition of 100 of each 12" hand stamped and accompanied by a series of posters also designed by Russom.

These releases will follow a narrative line and the six pieces of music tell a story of clubbing and the long journey through the night and into the next day. In this project, Russom carries his ability to create rich sonic landscapes to the dance floor using minimal but intense arrangements and high-energy repetition.

The second single "Dominatron / Anthem" takes place after midnight. The animal energy encountered in "World Eater" is released and splits itself into female and male parts. This 12" is the story of their struggle for power over one another. "Dominatron" is the feminine side and "Anthem" is the masculine side. As in a possession ritual, each side appears and does its dance.

Rhode Island native Gavin Russom now lives and works in Berlin. He has produced many remixes recently, including a new single by Croatian techno artist Petar Dundov, New York's avant garde duo Palms and a remix featured on the upcoming soundtrack for the remake of the movie Tron.

The first single "Death Tunnel" / "World Eater" tells the story of the personal entry into darkness. In "Death Tunnel" the rhythmic lines lose their edges as they repeat in a tense nature. We are driving forward fast and this somehow creates a particular kind of ecstasy. As in twilight, borders become unclear and the boundary between inner and outer becomes soft. Sounds like electronic waves connects the experience to the ocean, another vast, unknowable place of transformation. "World Eater" was created under circumstances such that even Gavin has no idea how many of the sounds were created. It has been said to suggest a panther prowling through the jungle, looking for prey. Considering the above, that seems appropriate enough.

Rhode Island native Gavin Russom now lives and works in Berlin. He has produced many remixes recently, including a new single by Croatian techno artist Petar Dundov, New York's avant garde duo Palms and a remix featured on the upcoming soundtrack for the remake of the movie Tron.

The third and final chapter is "Dream Catcher / Dawn". In "Dream Catcher" it becomes clear that neither the masculine nor the feminine side can win. They have to coexist, and can, when each side acknowledges its own strengths and resolves to use them toward a mutual end. In terms of the club land metaphor this is the point in the night where people hook up. As the longest of the six tracks its story is about total surrender. For me it evokes both lovers surrendering to each other and the devotee surrendering to his God. At this moment we acknowledge that there is no way out but through. "Dawn" comes. The bass line echoes the melody of "Death Tunnel", signaling return. Although we are beginning again everything looks, sounds and feels different. We are much stronger now. As the sun comes up and edges begin to become clear again, we drive slowly through the still sleeping city.

Release
Date:
4/6/09
***The man behind the name Capracara is Englishman Jonathan Burnip, who has released two acid-drenched singles on the UK label Soul Jazz and remixed for the likes of Matt Edward's Rekids label and Kill The DJ. He also remixes as one half of Tiger Timing and has contributed to the esoteric disco label History Clock. His latest project is Churchill's Leopards with Joel Martin of Quiet Village.

"King of the Witches" takes its cues from the psychotronic, primitive electronics of early house music and ancestral rhythms of heathen drum machines. Chock-full of primitive sounds and wonky leftfield quirkiness, the song is geared for the headz and the headphones and is so uniquely catchy and bouncy, it sounds more Jean-Jacques Perry than Jacque Lu Cont.

The remix comes courtesy of NYC legends Rub 'n' Tug (Thomas Bullock and Eric Duncan), who create what will inevitably be one of the remixes of 2009-- and no, it is not too early to make that statement. They flip the track into something sinister and ever-growing-- a dark loopy anthemic interpretation that does nothing but help cement their status as one of the most creative and exciting remixers and musicians working today.

Of late, Curd has collaborated with several artists, most recently remixing "One Day" for The Juan Maclean (DFA). He has also worked his magic on Cymande, PNAU for EMI, and The Dukes of Windsor for Island Records, to name a few.

Release
Date:

***The new avant disco outfit known as Hercules & Love Affair is the brainchild of NY resident and DJ Andrew Butler. It is one of the most inventive and original studio collaboration projects in some time, and the latest addition to the ever-growing and eclectic DFA family. Butler employs the talent of several notable guest contributors, such as vocalists (and sometimes DJ partner) Kim Anne Foxman and Antony (of Antony & The Johnsons), and co-producer Tim Goldsworthy of DFA.

After many years of waiting on the sidelines and taking in the energy and shifting tides of the NY dance and club world, Hercules & Love Affair's debut release, Classique #2, is a kinetic explosion of soulful, anthemic electro disco. Butler draws inspiration from the music he heard growing up, going to parties with Chicago house DJs like Derrick Carter and British expats the Wicked Crew, both of whom played disco and proto-house jams in their inspired DJ sets.

Together, the two tracks bring forth what could be a new era of euphoric disco, truly original yet with subtle nods to its glittering past-- where beautiful, bruising harmonies and loose-limbed mechanic rhythms collide to create a utopian and hedonistic dance floor paradise.

Release
Date:
10/22/07
***Holy Ghost! consists of two individuals, Nicholas Millhiser and Alexander Frankel. Both grew up a few blocks from each other in New York City and began collaborating on music at an early age. Their first foray into the public arena came in the shape of their first band, Automato, while attending high school. Shortly after signing to Capitol Records in 2000, they recruited DFA founders Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy to handle production duties on Automato's debut. After the recording, Frankel and Millhiser began lending their skills to various DFA productions, including remixes and as touring and recording members of The Juan Maclean.

All the while, Frankel and Millhiser began working toward their own record. Holy Ghost! is a product of their obsessions with analog synthesizers, rare disco, and ancient production techniques. It is a co-production with DFA and a real family affair. Their first single is "Hold On," a thumping disco trot that recalls a smoother and more mysterious time. Accompanying the title track is an instrumental version and a rhythmic French disco remix by Blackjoy a.k.a. Jerome Caron.

Artist: JONES, WALTER Title: I'll Keep On Loving You
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
DFA2212
Price: $7.75 Label: Dfa
Release
Date:
5/18/09
***Walter Jones is a bit of a dance music enigma, but not by design. Over the course of almost ten years, he has released so few singles, one can count them on one hand (if one's hand has five fingers). He has no full-length albums, and his singles typically feature remixes instead of the originals (from other dance music leaders like Maurice Fulton, i-F, and Henrik Schwarz).

Jones was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, to a very musical family. During the 1980s, he visited New York with his parents and was exposed to the city's culture and fashions of the era. Downtown NYC's cultural blender of hip-hop, new wave and no wave, and the late era of disco and synth funk had a long-lasting influence on him. As early as high school, Jones began making edits on a Sears cassette recorder to turn kids on to his wildly eclectic tastes mashed together onto one medium. By 1987 he had been turned onto the sound of Chicago House and Detroit Techno, by 1992 he was DJing, and by 1995 he was making his own music.

This new single is two tracks (no remixes) so staggeringly unique, haunting, and beautiful, DFA was ready to beg and plead Jones to release it. These heart-wrenching electronic pop songs are far more reminiscent of New Order and Depeche Mode than the deep house scene with which has been associated in the past.

The A-side, "I'll Keep On Loving You," is a modern hybrid of everything from new wave to new romantic to Boogie-Down-Bronx-style hip hop mixed with early-'80s soulful synth funk. What sets this release apart from the aforementioned is that this is all original Walter Jones. The accompanying B-side, "Living Without Your Love," shows continuity in both sound and subject matter, summoning the kind of love, loss, longing, and redemption found only in the most cathartic rhythm tracks.

45:33 was originally recorded by James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) as a continuous album-length disco symphony. Commissioned by Nike for their Original Run series, it was the second in the series and proved a massive success, both critically and commercially.

It is the result of Murphy's desire to create a piece of music outside the typical commercial constraints. 45:33 is a refreshing audio creation, complete and fulfilling--moving through a dynamic range of tempos and rhythms, all the while maintaining the essence of an LCD Soundsystem recording. Murphy explains that "this appealed to me because it was so anathematic to what you're typically asked to do as an artist-- make easily digestible lumps of music for albums, or the radio, or whatever."

Nearly six months since the iTunes exclusive ended, 45:33 is now available for the first time on CD and double vinyl. The CD, which also includes three bonus tracks previously available in the UK only, remains intact as a singular piece of music that is spliced six times for easy navigation. The vinyl release, on the other hand, is carefully separated into four individual tracks and spread across the four sides of vinyl.

No longer just for runners, 45:33 will prove to be a must-have release for athletes, DJs, and music fans alike.

***After a brief rest following the Grammy-nominated, poll-topping album Sound of Silver, LCD Soundsystem returns with a song written for the soundtrack to the Sony Pictures film 21. James Murphy's concept of what a big rock song made for a movie could sound like more than a balls-out Big Rock Song, the track delivers in unexpected ways, from the edgy opening two minutes that alone could serve as the score to a car chase, to the sudden explosion of choirs, blissful harmonies, and larger-than-life chorus.

Babytalk, who has created quite a buzz with two top-notch releases and is currently the toast of underground dance music and disco heads, remixes the track into something seemingly slower and definitely more sinister.

***Following the success of his smash sophomore album, Sound of Silver, LCD Soundsystem (James Murphy) gives us the Confuse the Marketplace vinyl-only EP, right on the heels of the commercial release of his disco-epic 45:33.

The EP consists of three tracks, all previously unavailable in North America and all aimed directly at the dancefloor. The sensational "Freak Out/Starry Eyes" is a soulful two-part jam laced with heavy congas and soothing vocals that continues in the same cosmic disco vein as 45:33. Also included is "North American Scum," subtitled "Onanistic Dub" and remixed by Murphy and longtime DFA studio engineer Erick Broucek. Percussion-heavy track "Hippie Priest Bum-Out" completes the trio, emphasizing Murphy's long-apparent love of all things drum-related. Originally appearing as the B-side to the UK-only North American Scum 7-inch, it will also be featured on the upcoming Murphy and Pat Mahoney Fabriclive36 mix due out in November.

Additionally, all three tracks will be featured on the CD release of 45:33, making this vinyl EP a soughtafter item for both DJs and vinyl completists.

***Somewhere way, way the hell out of our solar system lays the planet DFA-- full of people so much cooler than you that its not even funny; they dress perfect, look perfect and when they dance, if they can be bothered, they're fucking ice cold.

"Their king is James Murphy, who sits in a throne made of vinyl above a Saturday Night Fever-style...dance floor and looks proudly over his shockingly gorgeous people. Losing his edge? Not fucking likely...Bear in mind this is the sound of a party that you will never in a million years be invited to-- unless you're sent The Rapture's invites by mistake-- so take in as much of it as you can now. Then there are the bleeps, crashes and bangs and -- hallelujah-- there are bongos as well. The dance music check list rounds itself off by disseminating the ghost of electroclash and even has time to offer up some screechy mental puppy- killing techno. With startling ease, LCD Soundsystem are becoming close to legendary, grab a part of that legend. --Leonie Cooper, NME

As half of production team DFA (Rapture, Black Dice, Radio 4), [Murphy] created and defined the new sound of the underground. As LCD Soundsystem, he's given the movement its anthem in..."Losing My Edge..." [LCD Sounsystem] is like a collision between Motown and the Happy Mondays, with extra-wired, teethgrinding nervous energy. --Alex Needham, NME

James Murphy must be having the time of his life. The beefy Brooklynite is one half of DFA, the in-demand producers who transformed The Rapture from skronky artpunks into a relevant-sounding concern....LCD Soundsystem ...mines a similar seam of nervy hedonism and raw punk-funk energy....[I]t's the sound of a major new talent striving-- and succeeding-- to be original. LCD Soundsystem's "Yeah" single was judged by many to be the underground dance anthem of 2004 and was included in almost every Top 10 Singles List floating around at 2004 year's end. A pretty tough act to follow. But look, jackass, that's what everyone said about "Losing My Edge." So calm down and quit nitpicking everything to death. Jeez. With the LCD Soundsystem debut full length double-CD dropping (via A Major Label) in America February 15, 2005, DFA Records takes what was meant as a UK B-Side for the album's first single "Movement" and gives it the good ol' 12-inch vinyl treatment, with vocal and instrumental versions. Both the rock and dance genres are given equal time and respect and the song morphs and chants its way into a giggling, grooving stew. The vocal version has been added to the debut album, but this 12-inch is USA-only and exclusive to DFA Records.

***Since the turn of the 21st century, DFA club music maestro Juan Maclean has been laying groundwork. First, there were killer singles, from "By the Time I Get to Venus" in 2002, to "Give Me Every Little Thing," to last year's international club hit and critical year-end favorite "Happy House." There was a debut full-length (Less Than Human, 2005); remixes for colleagues like Air, Chicken Lips, Daft Punk, Dave Gahan, and Matthew Dear; international tours with LCD Soundsystem, Cut Copy, and Shocking Pinks; and DJ gigs from Telluride to Tel Aviv.

Now comes the next stage of the operation--album two has arrived, entitled The Future Will Come.

Rather than retreat to a recording studio in Woodstock, NY, and toil in solitude, Maclean brought along Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel (also known as Holy Ghost!) to lay down parts for The Future Will Come. "The next guideline was revisiting the Human League," reveals Maclean-- specifically the lineup responsible for the 1981 international bestseller Dare. The opening bars of "Happy House" trigger exuberance in packed nightclubs that easily matches the giddy heights of that time-tested synth-pop classic.

Maclean enlisted creative foil and DFA mainstay Nancy Whang (also an agent of LCD Soundsystem), a willing co-conspirator. "The very first song we worked on, he already had his vocal part and wanted mine to serve as a counterpoint," she remembers. "From there, I could hear the male-female call-and-response."

With these points set, the pair wrote and recorded the album quickly. Rather than elongate ideas into epic 12-inch singles, they strived kept sounds and structures crisp and succinct. Focus was maintained via ruthless edits and repeated spins of "SexyBack." The results range from the bittersweet parry-and-thrust of "One Day" to the android R&B of "The Station." At the furthest extreme, the spare, desolate "Human Disaster" serves as a chilling contrast to the climatic reprise of "Happy House."

Polished, precise, fully realized and flawlessly executed from start to finish, The Future Will Come stands poised to disarm listeners in a surprising, rewarding way only certain albums can manage.

Format: 12" Catalog

DFA2191
Price: $7.75 Label: Dfa

***Juan Maclean's primary creative muse has always been equal parts electro-disco music and science fiction literature, mainly Philip K. Dick. Maclean's vision of modern life, when explored on his 2005 debut album Less Than Human, was viewed through similar paranoid eyes.

But in 2008, Maclean moves further away from his "Robot Phase" into a universe slightly more optimistic and relaxed in spirit. Happy House is the first evidence of this new direction-- a winning combination of Nancy Whang's effervescent vocals, DFA's production and mixing work, and a brilliant and relentless dance pop anthem co-written by Whang and Maclean.

Touring the world as a headline DJ has made a noticeable impact on Maclean. Hearing his own music and watching people dance to it at leading clubs from Dublin to Sao Paolo now informs his music as much as his oft-repeated set of core influences-- Paperclip People, Derrick May, Throbbing Gristle, Cerrone, Boney M, and Giorgio Moroder.

For remix duties, Maclean enlisted two New Yorkers-- long-time downtown DJ stalwart Prince Language has made a name for himself internationally in the last year with remixes for The Rapture, Armand Van Helden, Joakim, Stateless, and The Droyds. Here, he turns in his best remix to date with its echoes of Mudd Club-era NYC and Konk's "Your Life."

Rong Music's Lee Douglas blew up dance floors across the globe in 2007 with his already classic "New York Story" single, which seamlessly morphed a classic disco sound into something uniquely modern and very much his own. Like Prince Language, Douglas has also released a number of successful re-edits. His remix takes "Happy House" deeper into the cosmic disco/Italo realm.

Both remixes add a that special New York City flavor, making the "Happy House" single a dance tourist's window into the state of downtown clubbing in what has always historically been the worldwide capital for boogie. It is no longer as paranoid, as cold, as robotic. The hands are back in the air and Maclean's 4/4 beating heart may just be human after all.

Artist: MACLEAN, JUAN Title: I Robot / Less Than Human

***(not actual cover art)

After three seminal electro-dance singles, we see yet another angle of Juan MacLean on this latest release, titled perhaps a humble nod to our Teutonic electronic godfathers. "I Robot" takes a subby acid-tinged Trans-European trip down the Autobahn (or maybe some crappy Midwestern freeway). Frantic synth lines weave from lane to lane, and analog bleeps remind that the Polizia aren't far behind. As the song reaches its midpoint, the drums slow, a choral sample rises, and utter paranoia blindsides us. Tough and gentle at the same time, it is techno that can be played in the club, in the car or in the bedroom.

"Less Than Human" should calm you somewhat. It is many years later and Richard D. James sits in the passenger seat, the English countryside speeds past the Ecstasy-fueled Mini. Juan remembers when techno was analog and innocent and not made on a Powerbook with patches-- barely.

Both tracks also appeared on DFA Records Compilation #2 and will not be on the Juan MacLean full length debut album, due in early Summer 2005.

Artist: MACLEAN, JUAN Title: Simple Life
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
DFA2203
Price: $7.75 Label: Dfa
Release
Date:
9/22/08
"The Simple Life," the second track released from The Juan Maclean's forthcoming album, The Future Will Come, clocks in at a lean 8:38. Considering the first single, "Happy House," was twelve minutes plus, one would assume Maclean's album was nothing but this sort of thing. This could not be further from the truth. These are the bookends--"The Simple Life" begins the album, "Happy House" closes it, and what lies in between will be heard soon enough.

"The Simple Life" is an effective mixture of dark, arpeggiated synth and militant Italo disco drumming, with each bassline and chord change a step toward the light, which in this case belongs to Nancy Whang and the melancholy ambience she exudes. Whang trades verses back and forth with Maclean himself, who comes on like a robot in therapy, slowly enunciating love confessions like "Promises I never meant, it's just what I had to do."

For the remix, DFA was thrilled to be able to work with Marcus Worgull, who has released classic singles on Berlin's Innervisions label. Worgull adds a lush warmth and wide open, spaced-out element to both the arrangements and vocals, breaking up the narrative into sound snippets that take on new meaning. It is a remix in which to get lost on the dance floor and in your headphones.

Riding high on their success playing with Cut Copy in Australia and at a slew of European festivals, The Juan Maclean are on tour through September. "Happy House" remains a massive international club hit spun ubiquitously from Ibiza to Santo's Party House in NYC. It was BBC Radio 1's Pete Tong's "Essential New Tune of the Week" and Mixmag's "Single of the Month" in May 2008.

Artist: MOCK & TOOF Title: Underwater
Format: LP Catalog

DFA2205
Price: $7.75 Label: Dfa
Release
Date:
10/6/08
***Mock & Toof were infamously discovered by DFA many years ago via an MP3 demo emailed to the website address (which later became their debut Death From Abroad single, "Brownbred"). On this release, the pair finally makes its proper DFA debut with the elastic dance pop single, "Underwater."

Since this enigmatic English duo began corresponding with DFA, they started their own label Tiny Sticks, released 20 singles, and were immediately commissioned to do remixes for The Juan Maclean and Hot Chip, as well as Maps, Scissor Sisters, Sia, Box Codax, and Kissogram. Forthcoming remixes include "Hold On" by Holy Ghost! and "Hold On" by Hot Chip. No, really, it's just a coincidence.

They became underground sensations on the disco edit scene when their mix of "Like a Virgin" (retitled "Lycra Virgin") dramatically increased the groundswell of fans and other DJs championing their work. When Mock & Toof released the single "Beat Up" on Tiny Sticks, the B-side, "Lucky," hinted at what was to come. It featured the vocals of Gavin Gordon and showed a new direction and ambition for Mock & Toof. From the vocals to the hypnotic arrangements and rhythm tracks, it was a step outside of the nightclubs toward a modern pop song.

"Underwater" is a true breakthrough--a song so undeniably laid back and catchy, the duo came up with the term "cosmic sea shanty" to sum it up. With its undeniable Madchester / Beta Band delivery, DFA decided it was more of an E Shanty, especially the dub on the flipside, which blends warm keys, euphoric piano, and a killer bass line. "Underwater" is more unique magic from the Tiny Sticks men and a new page in their still-evolving career.

Artist: PANTHERS Title: Goblin City (Holy Ghost! Remix)
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
DFA2206
Price: $7.75 Label: Dfa
Release
Date:
10/6/08
***Panthers used to play aggressive post hardcore before their style morphed into a somewhat sober version of anthemic stoner rock. They released albums on both Troubleman and Vice Records. "Goblin City" is the lead track from their second record, The Trick (Vice, 2007).

Justin Chearno also played in Turing Machine, who recorded the first record produced by the DFA (Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy). Through Murphy and Goldsworthy, he met DJ McNany (aka Run-Roc), who was the DFA studio intern at the time and later Chearno's roommate. Chearno kept close ties to DFA and through them befriended the members of Holy Ghost! When the new Panthers record came out, the band was asked by Vice to get some friends to remix a song for the Scion remix series. Chearno sent the record to Holy Ghost! who requested to work on "Goblin City." They then delivered one of the most relentlessly snappy disco dubs in quite some time. Panthers also asked Run-Roc to do a mix of the song and he came up with an excellent old school acid house version.

This single is a true DFA family affair, bringing together good friends, musicians, and creative allies from the past and for the future. Family reunions are not supposed to be this much fun.

Artist: PYLON Title: Gyrate +
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
DFA2181CD
Price: $13.00 Label: Dfa
Release
Date:
10/8/07
***In December of 1987, R.E.M. was chosen by Rolling Stone as "America's Best Rock And Roll Band." This title that was quickly dismissed by drummer Bill Berry. "We're not the best rock n' roll band in America." Pylon, he declared, was much more deserving of the honor than his group. Yet, at the time, Pylon had been broken up for four years.

Such is the legacy of Pylon. Word of mouth and a relatively small but vital cache of music has kept the story of the fiercely independent and highly influential band alive for three decades.

DFA is proud (and quite lucky!) to be the ones to announce the release of Pylonis debut LP Gyrate-- originally unleashed in 1980 and appearing here for the first ever time on CD, beautifully remastered from the original reels. The CD release also includes the addition of their landmark debut 7" single "Cool" b/w "Dub" (1979) and the 10" EP Pylon!!. The CD also includes one track from 1979, never before released, entitled iFunctionalityi. 16 tracks total-- with liner notes from Fred Schneider (B-52s), Hugo Burnham (Gang of Four) and Michael Stipe (R.E.M.)-- it is amazing something so praised in its day and still quite modern-sounding had yet to make its way onto CD.

Pylon's first single, "Cool" / "Dub" was released on Atlanta's DB Recs label in early 1980, earning a slew of excited press that immediately heralded Pylon as a major underground act. The band's jagged rhythms, scratchy guitar and insistent bass lines were the perfect foil for Vanessa's whisper-to-a-shriek vocals and the band's live shows were sweaty dance parties. Their debut LP, Gyrate, was released in November of '80, also on DB, amid a heady time for the band. A string of sold-out club shows across the US was highlighted by east coast opening dates for the Gang of Four and an opening slot for The B-52's in New York's Central Park.

Glowing reviews came flooding in, including attention from Rolling Stone, Trouser Press and seemingly every other magazine on the planet. "Gyrate is a very good record that, in its humor, drive and purposeful innocence, sums up everything that's best about the new American rock bands," wrote Tom Carson in Rolling Stone. "[Pylon] bears scant relation to anything," cooed a writer in NME, defining them as a trailblazing band of the times. Pylon continued to tour and played more dates with like-minded acts Mission of Burma and Public Image Ltd.

The band followed up Gyrate with the like-minded album Chomp and continued the party on the road, both headlining as well as remaining the opening act of choice for many larger acts from overseas. But the minute the band became more a job than a party for its members, they called it a day. No regrets. In 1990, the band quickly reared its head one more time, released the college radio smash album Chain and toured stadiums opening for R.E.M. Then they disappeared again.

Since 2004, Pylon has been playing random surprise gigs around Georgia, slowly warming for something new, realizing the sound they so innocently yet confidently defined had hardly gone out of style. They had more admirers now than they ever imagined and DFA was certainly one of many. The song "Danger" had been a staple of James Murphy's DJ sets since 1999, much to the curiosity and bewilderment of a new generation of kids just discovering the many layers of the post punk movement. It is an honor for DFA to finally be able to bring this cherished music into the public domain in such a dignified manner.

***With "Chasm," the anticipated follow-up to Shit Robot's acclaimed 2006 "Wrong Galaxy" 12-inch, Marcus Lambkin once again demonstrates his keen ability to create dance tracks both deceptively simple and instantly gratifying. On the epic A-side, Lambkin masterfully joins relentless, brooding, patiently building techno with underlying melodic rock grooves. This dance track is both innovative and immediately familiar. The flipside, appropriately titled "Lonely Planet," is a galactic krautrock adventure through whirling synths into the unknown.

Lambkin, who grew up in Ireland, spent several years DJing in New York--where he met friends and cohorts James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy of the DFA-- before moving to his current home of Stuttgart, Germany. After touring the world while relentlessly DJing and returning home in between gigs to record in his new home studio, Lambkin finally unleashes his second set of bold and anthemic dance floor treasures.

Format: 12" Catalog

DFA2214
Price: $7.75 Label: Dfa
Release
Date:
7/6/09
***After the release of Chasm and Wrong Galaxy, Shit Robot (a.k.a. Marcus Lambkin) had listeners' ears burning for more. Simple Things is his much-anticipated new single released by his good friends at DFA Records.

Born in Ireland, Lambkin was drawn in by the club scene at a young age, where he delved into such bands as The Buzzcocks and The Dead Kennedys. This soon led to his discovery of acid house in the '80s. After moving to New York, a chance meeting with the up-and-coming electro-disco legend James Murphy put Lambkin on his way to becoming one of the top DJs in NYC. While their friendship developed, Lambkin moved back to Europe and formed Shit Robot. His latest 12-inch, Simple Things, is the freshest in a long line of DFA greats.

When it came to the remix, Lambkin enlisted Todd Terje to revamp the US version of his single. Originally from Oslo, Terje employs subtle yet brilliant production skills to make "Simple Life (Work It Out)" a remix on any disco fanatic's play list.

The new tracks here feature the perfectly haunting vocals of Washington, DC indie legend Ian Svenonius, the voice of The Make Up, Nation of Ulysses, and Weird War. Lambkin accompanies his vocals perfectly with an elegant yet gritty synthetic genius. Delivering a steady heart-throbbing bass line and an array of pleasantly surprising and memorable acidic sounds, Shit Robot's Simple Life offers a glimpse into the future of music.

Release
Date:
9/17/07
***"Still Going" is the combination of two NYC dance music leaders-- Eric "Dunks" Duncan of Rub 'n' Tug and Olivier Spencer of Manthraxx and Mr. Negative.

Spencer and Duncan met many years ago at the now infamous Rui's Loft, where Duncan spun legendary sweaty late night parties as one half of the New York DJ duo Rub 'n' Tug. Rub 'n' Tug began to take off, and Duncan was soon DJing around the world, releasing mix CDs on Eskimo, Fabric, and aNYthing Records, and remixes for LCD Soundsystem, Coldplay, Roxy Music, and the Beastie Boys. Spencer was DJing extensively and released singles and remixes under several aliases on Fine, Kitsune, Rong, Crack and Speed, and Poker Flat. He also began to help engineer and program numerous Rub 'n' Tug releases and remixes, further cementing the relationship.

It was only natural that the two would begin working more closely together, making music. This came about on the "How & Why" single for Rong Music. From there, the duo produced the blissful "Still Going Theme." On the night it was mixed down, James Murphy was spinning at the nearby DFA Records Holiday Party of 2006. James liked the mix so much, he played it right then and there to a roomful of rabid disco fans who cheered for it on the spot. Duncan and Spencer headed back to the studio soon after to record the flipside for the future DFA release --the equally anthemic "On And On."

Even before its release, "Still Going Theme" has been hailed by many top DJs around the world and has been featured in Prins Thomas' Essential Mix for the BBC's Radio 1. The track will soon be featured on the upcoming Force Of Nature mix on Mule Musiq, as well as James Murphy and Pat Mahoney's (LCD Soundsystem) Fabric Live mix.

***I've Got My Eye On You is the debut full-length album from Syclops, featuring Sven Kortehisto on keyboards and electronics, Hanna Sarkari on bass, keyboards, and electronics, and Jukka Kantonen on drums, percussion, and drum programming. This album was produced by Maurice Fulton.

Little is known about the secretive trio. It is believed that Kortehisto, Sarkari, and Kantonen aren't all Finnish, but repeated attempts to gather any kind of a credible biography for the players has been unsuccessful; they simply refuse to do interviews or reveal anything about themselves. Do they see this as rebellious? No. Do they want to be mysterious? No. Do they think this helps the music? Yes. The members like to perform live together, but only for themselves and not for audiences. The act of making music is enough for them. They want the listener to experience and enjoy it unencumbered by other things like biographical information, stories, and the like.

Despite the mystery, I've Got My Eye On You is an engaging record that reveals the full shamanic magic of the trio-- a mixture of dark intensity and subtle, crafted musicianship. It follows and expands on their brilliant January 2008 DFA single, "Where's Jason's K?" Soaking in the band's brooding undercurrent, the listener will now have to imagine what kind of people they are and where they find their inspiration-- heavy metal riffs over acid house? Playing folkloric instruments with old school analog synthesizers in a Finnish laboratory? Only the band themselves know for certain.

***DFA Records is proud to unveil the debut album from the trio Syclops-- featuring Sven Kortehisto on keyboards and electronics, Hanna Sarkari on bass, keyboards and electronics and Jukka Kantonen on drums, percussion and drum programming. This was produced by Maurice Fulton.

On the first 12-inch single from the album, we are exposed to the full and raw bluntness of this northern power trio. On the A-side is a teaser called "Where's Jason's K" from the forthcoming album-- it's a deep, dark electro anthem for 2008 that is sure to ignite dance floors. We do not know who Jason is or where he misplaced his K; we are just grateful he inspired this tune. The B-side features an exclusive non-album track, "Monkeypuss"--an early-afternoon pre-sauna jam session full of funky, spiraling bass lines and dirty, hard-edged vibes.

Syclops debuted in 2001 on BubbleTease Records. In 2006, the trio played most of the instruments on Maurice Fulton's remix of Hot Chip's "Over & Over."

The trio also played on the Kathy Diamond album Miss Diamond To You. The upcoming Syclops album I Got My Eye On You reveals the full shamanic like magic of the trio-- a mixture of dark intensity and subtle crafted musicianship. Pressed to comment, Jukka left us with a final thought-- "We don't like to talk much; even when we are together, we are often silent and communicate by doing things like making food, or chopping wood, or hanging out together in our sauna. I guess we are trying to say things in our music, but the fact remains--our music says more than we ever could in person."

Syclops will not be available for interviews.

Artist: YACHT Title: See Mystery Lights
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
DFA2218CD
Price: $13.00 Label: Dfa
Release
Date:

* This information is presented in bullet form, because Yacht is very committed to efficiency.

* Yacht is a band, belief system, and business conducted by Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans of Marfa, Texas, and Portland, Oregon. All people are welcome to become members of Yacht.

* Yacht was formed in 2002 as Y.A.C.H.T., "Young Americans Challenging High Technology." The group has released four albums to date. See Mystery Lights is their first full-length release for DFA Records.

* The 2009 form of Yacht is highly indebted to the "Mystery Lights," an unexplained optical phenomena native to the Far West Texas desert, where most of See Mystery Lights was written and recorded.

* The cover of See Mystery Lights was done by Boyd Elder, a Texan artist best known for his album art for The Eagles' Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975), an iconic fragment of the rock history of the mythical American West. Yacht became disciples of Elder after finding him in the desert (searching for peyote cactus) in early 2008.

* Strictly speaking, Yacht does "perform music." Yacht provides inspiring Teachings of constantly changing elements: PowerPoint presentations, immersive audio, live audience audits, and shamanistic video environments. The Yacht Performance is expressly designed to provide groups of people with catharsis and purification.

* Yacht believes that all people have a right to free thought, to free expression, to write their own opinions freely, and to counter, utter, and write upon the opinions of others. There is a difference between free as in "free lunch" and free as in "liberated." Yacht believes that music and the internet will become both, in time.

* Yacht is not a cult.

* No additional information will be divulged for the time being.

Artist: YACHT Title: Summer Song
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
DFA2207
Price: $7.75 Label: Dfa
Release
Date:
10/6/08
* This information is going to be presented in bullet form, because Yacht is very committed to efficiency.

* In fact, if this onesheet could somehow be a PowerPoint presentation, Yacht would be absolutely thrilled.

* Yacht would use as many transition effects as possible in the PowerPoint one-sheet.

* Yacht's favorite transition effect is: Confetti (without gravity).

* "Summer Song" was originally recorded as a love letter to tourmates LCD Soundsystem, and released for free online.

* Yacht is as surprised as you are that DFA wanted to release the song.

* "Summer Song" was recorded, produced, mixed by Jona Bechtolt in an apartment in Portland, Oregon.

* Yacht has expanded to add an additional full-time member, Claire L. Evans.

* The Summer Song 12-inch also features two brand-new, previously unreleased tracks.

* One is a complex and empowering banger about living anywhere you want, from the new album, See Mystery Lights.

* The other one is a preemptive remix from another new song on the forthcoming/aforementioned album.

* Incidentally, this is DFA's first "audio handshake" with representatives of Portland, Oregon.

* At this point in the presentation, Yacht would use a 3D Cube transition.

* The music video for "Summer Song" was filmed by Portland director Judah Switzer.

* He also made that awesome Scout Niblett video where she puts all that bread in her face.

* Yacht remixes itself.

* Oh, and the new Yacht album is set for release in 2009.

* Thanks for your time.
