Artist: 100% STORMS ENSEMBLE Title: Symphonic Dance For The 1939 World's Fair
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
EJ54
Price: $9.50 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
9/29/03
***A rare vinyl-only offering from Emperor Jones courtesy of the 100% STORMS ENSEMBLE, the bedroom symphony project of one ERIC MORRISON (HOME, LEELS). Symphonic Dance for the 1939 World's Fair is a new post-facto musical piece meant to capture the dizzy elation of America fishtailing on a wet highway just before careening headlong into WWII. Various strings, french horn, clarinet, and flute combine with more basic rock elements to sweep you into its pomp and circumstance. The B-side features an eighteen-minute epic rock collage in the vein of HOME. Numbered edition of 300 packaged in black glow-in-the-dark sleeves.

Artist: BLACK MAYONNAISE Title: Ttssattsr
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
EJ66CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
10/25/04
***Black Mayonnaise is the one-man bedroom doom project of Akron, Ohio's Mike Duncan. This extremely disturbing music features dying Elephant Man gurgles as vocals mixed with detuned sludge metal guitar and an overall cough syrup spacerock feel. Small-minded folk might call it "depressing," but for slow-mo headbangers and psych freaks alike, it serves as a blessing of beautiful bleakness.

The relentless lo-fi drum machine has a profound effect on the overall desolate feel of the album -- the nine-minute "Spherics," for example, begins with a grueling six-minute intro of space gurgles and a S-L-O-W Melvins-like kick/snare pattern, but the payoff is immense: a rush of Sabbath-on-16 guitar flood that runs like a river of mayonnaise. Good things come for those who wait.

Full of heavy spaced out drum tracks, low distorted sludge bass and pitchshifted vocals. The mood is deep and very, very dark: the waltz of the sewer rats safely tucked beneath the city streets. --The Kettle Black

Artist: CRACK PIPES Title: Beauty School
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
EJ68
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
4/11/05
***A remarkable change in sound marks The Crack Pipes' third release. Beauty School's thirteen songs follow a course through American music from the gritty Howlin' Wolf stomper of the opening track to the chamber strings of the reprise finale. Some country teasin', a little tasty funk and plenty of garage rockin' good times all await.

"East Side Injections" digs deep into ghetto issues and "Reflections in a Bad Light" is the best anti-cocaine song of the decade, but the album's highpoint is "Q&A" which answers all the questions, one by one, as to why this band is called The Crack Pipes. Believe it!

The Crack Pipes have gone to beauty school and now can see the beauty in all things, from the swaying branch of a lonely tree to the wreckage of a man passed out on the street, it's the blues and the super yeah yeah sound, come on up to the lighthouse for the blind.

An Aus-punk body blow...a powerful onslaught of garage rock. Lead pipe Ray Pride goes from mumbling angst-rider to Americana preacher...toxically simple but emotionally involving....More often than not, the Crack Pipes shine like the best of 'em, with the carefree chaos of weathered vets.... [F]ull of noisy fun [that] slithers and shakes in the right direction. --Austin Chronicle

The Crack Pipes are...a little off hinge, that's exactly why you will own this album by the end of the day. --sctas.com

Artist: GOLDEN BOYS Title: Whiskey Flower
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
EJ 77CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
6/18/07
***No one sounds like these Golden Boys, but rolling their sophomore album over some wine with colleague Enid Benedek of the non-music blog SiltVegan, she offers "Damn, this comes off kinda like Chilton listening to Buck Owens before he did Like Flies on Sherbert." OK, a good start, but I kindly inform her this is three songwriters performing all originals. She nods, then 10 minutes later frantically pants: "This baby's warm, sounds like these are first-takes made by desperate boys having fun!" She bobs her head and winces here and there: "A bit muddled but It's too knockout to call it rowdy or raw or that 'g' word, cuz these arrangements are spot-on -- hey, do you have a photo?"

"THAT'S them? Wow, a band from Austin with nothing cute about them. Haha, they're doomed."

"What do you want Enid?" I spew, "These guys are drowning out the misery of crappy jobs, war, tv on the radio, and stone-faced hipsters with two things that seem to provide them relief -- shots and some great fucking songs. Didn't you hear those words 'I know this world ain't as bad as it seems' and that line about drinking cuz your mom just had surgery? And just when you think they're gonna make you smile and dance all night, a song like 'I Remember Georgia' makes you wonder 'Damn, why's that dude all sad now?' Isn't that deep, Enid?"

"If you'd calm down, I was going to say 'Oooh Girl' kills me," says Enid, "It's some lost weekend shit with Lennon doing a quick take with his L.A. friends after a few gallons of tequila. Sorry for the name-dropping, I'm drunk. Play the whole thing again, shut your mouth, and pour me another, bitch!"

"A very cracked and shakey take on raunch-hootenany-ism recalling Memphis' more lop-sided degenerates. There are parts of this disc that cohere into something identifiably musical, but not enough to bother us." Thurston&Byron,Bull Tongue / Arthur Magazine

"Austin's Golden Boys proving once again that...Party rip-off bands beat Nick Cave 's silly solo shtick any day." ---Chuck Eddy, Village Voice

Artist: GREY DATURAS Title: Owly Claw Hammer
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
EJ80
Price: $13.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
2/4/08
***An engineer dealing with frequencies that are knocking over his five-pound Catholic candles as he's recording strangers should have the good temper to control the earthquake he didn't anticipate. Melbourne's Grey Daturas camped out in Austin's hi-fi Infinity Recording for one day and borrowed cabinets that nearly reached the ceiling, cooking up 34 minutes of disturbing waves that seemed on the verge of opening the Balcones Fault's limestone and lava.

Lots of drone albums loom in the racks, sure. But if you, listener, perceive this long-playing record as whatever drone or doom metal, is, then you, Madame Blahg, are as simple-headed as Bush Jr. doing lines while watching a hurricane on CNN. You can hear this trio feeling each other a year ago, as these A and B sides spin in '08 in your living room: a triad with cleared heads and no preconception, speaking to each other with demonic waves, while not once looking at the other's eyes or hands nor saying a word. Not bad, considering they withstood a night of broken glass with Texas mental-case bands at the club just hours before.

So why did they do this? I'll tell you why, Jimmy Somerville: because like Asia, they were a group in the heat of the moment who shat out the most bone-crunching session of glistening murk that this state has experienced since Roky and Josefus jammed some heavy-mental during a '72 rehearsal (Google it, killer bootleg).

Maybe something should be said about what it sounds like. Shit. "Having a half-hour orgasm right before a natural disaster's about to kill you, while an early Celtic Frost instrumental 7-inch plays at 16rpm?" Maybe. But this one's 33, for the record.

Artist: HUNDRED DOLLAR BAND Title: Waves And Particles
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
EJ73
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
9/11/06
*** The Hundred Dollar Band is the new collective led by Alastair Galbraith, a New Zealand legend who has released scores of loner psychedelia over the years. Joining Galbraith on vocals, violin and guitar are his wife Maxine Funke on cello, guitar and transceivers, and Mike Dooley (The Enemy, Toy Love) on drums, spoons and fireworks. Waves and Particles contains live recordings and home recordings, captured on a four-track, half-inch tape machine in all its hazy glory.

The album abruptly takes off with swirling drones and falling drums, a sea of metal strings weaving in and out of the mix. The second song is an updated version of Plagal Grind's 1989 "Midnight Blue," that swings out the core of the original melody to a shuffling and expanded workout. The record settles down toward the end, where a group ritual and meditation in "Chronicle Fireworks" creates a Jack Nitzsche score to a Manson murder scene. The drummer is killed off, husband and wife kick on a buzzing rhythm machine and feast on the gore with the closing "Engine Song," reducing the gristle and bone to a distorted glaze.

Artist: KB DA KIDNAPPA Title: Ghetto Raised
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
EJ789
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
7/9/07
***KB Da Kidnappa was born in Galveston, Texas and raised in the hot north Houston streets of Trinity Garden. He was 13 when he joined Houston's infamous gangsta rap group Street Military in 1993, whose self-released albums over the years were slowed and splattered on over a dozen of DJ Screw's original tapes. With Street Military on hiatus, this 30-minute 12-inch is a sampler of his debut solo album, with a couple of exclusives. KB opened for UGK at SXSW with his albino python wearing more bling than himself, and he was recently documented on Vice TV's internet-video-thingy about the history of Houston rap.

"Ghetto Raised" is the gritty but soulful focus track, with a new video produced by Major League Motoring to be released in conjunction with this 12-inch. The flip features the vocoder-drenched club banger "Free Pharoah," a collaboration with fellow H-Town-ers Moufs of Da Souf called "Things Don't Change" and the horrifyingly brilliant "Is You Scared To Die?"

Artist: LEELS Title: Cannonballs And Silver Tongues
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
EJ63
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
7/12/04
***The second offering from this crack band of Home and Meringue members (Eric Morrison of the former, Trey Conner and Chris Sturgeon of the latter) sounds like a classic rock record such as The Wall through a rootsier Prozac filter. Cannonballs and Silver Tongues is the result of many, many hours in Leels' Devils Isle Wet Lab home studio distinguished by heavily layered vocal passages, fleshed out with brass, wind, and strings, and balanced with spontaneous cartoon-like sparks-- as if Rumours has been recut by The Fugs.

Leels' music is more overtly pop than you'd expect given their lineage; the album abounds with miniaturized heroic-rock passages and Paul McCartney-on-cough-syrup-with-ice hooks -Magnet

Artist: LORD FYRE Title: Destruction At 2013
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
EJ76
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
11/13/06
***This is the debut LP from John Wilkes Booze singer and co-founder Seth Mahern. Burning, explosive, paranoid drones emanate from the noisy grooves of this platter, tickling your ears and rattling your spine. You're in for a horrific swift boat ride down the Bay Hap River, where mangled vines of whoosh and mounds of acid steel guitar can crush your soul into a quivering, wasted piece of jelly. And that's just side A!

Destruction at 2013 was recorded at the Church of Sun Ra during the great tape scare of 2005 by his goddamn-self. Additional sounds were provided by others living in the garden. Bloomington, Indiana, is a magical place where you can see, feel and hear the light. Every audible sound was captured by analog signal onto magnetic tape before being transferred to metal masters and finally pressed into melted black vinyl bits.

  • Ultra-limited vinyl-only release
  • Front covers letterpress printed by foot, back covers decorated by hand

Catfish's heavy packaging features an eye-blistering drawing by the artist (imagine Savage Pencil after 3 years at Guantanamo) reproduced in a sickening black cast created with multiple passes of ink.

Artist: MITTENS ON STRINGS Title: Look Up In The Sky!!
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
EJ74
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
9/11/06
*** Mittens on Strings originally hails from Kentuckiana, the oft-overlooked borderland between Southern Indiana and Louisville, Kentucky. In days of doldrum, of which there are many in those parts, people find ways to make the hours go by. Dreams of dinosaurs, hearts pumping syrup, and aliens alleviating heartbreak through abduction permeate the minds of residents and the songs of Mittens on Strings. Their debut album is the culmination of years of self-released anonymity, and is funny, sad, reflective, anthemic, and whatever other raw mantras are missing from the listener's life. It's as simple as a back porch sing-along and as complex as an abattoir on fire.

Artist: PAUL NEWMAN Title: This Is How It Is Lost
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
EJ70
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
4/25/05
***After a long wait, the fourth and finest album from Paul Newman (as in, yes, that Paul Newman, the rock band, who are in no way an "emo" band) is good enough to make you cry. Tastefully placed parts swirl in and out of the speaker cones, weaving a nourishing basket of goodies. Though they began in 1996 as primarily an instrumental rock band, each of the seven masterful tracks on THIS is how it is LOST features vocals, adding a new dimension for those familiar with their sound. Six of the seven songs feature vocals from Eddie Robert, who also plays with I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, while the seventh track features Craig McCaffrey, lately also of The American Analog Set. So, changes in sound and time of absence aside, everything that made Paul Newman revered by many music lovers remains intact. Recorded with longtime engineering partner Jason Ward, TihiiL promises to delight with its meticulous, rich pulse.

Magnificent...compact with...logarithmic exactitude...but showing a laxity within their strict orchestrations that only comes from familiarity between the players and further improvement in writing songs. And the playing...is brilliant...surreptitiously delicate ... [and] rapturous. --Austin Chronicle

Paul Newman is a post-rock band for people who like post-rock bands.... [Their] great riffs and use of rhythms [make] Paul Newman worth listening to. --fakekjazz.com

[The] ability to change tempo and feeling...makes me like this band so much...Paul Newman are devoutly obsessed with reeling you in with a bait of musical mood swings whenever they feel your mind will swim downstream. --collective-zine.co.uk

Artist: RAHDUNES Title: S/T
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
EJ81
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
10/8/07
***This San Fran-sicko duo make their long-playing debut with 46 minutes of devilish, droney psych that will delight fans of truly demented music. Repetitive bass leads are peppered with murky washes of horror movie-inspired sounds, all served on top of a mountain of tape hiss that becomes an integral part of the music.

This is not instrumental music but mental music, with creepy, wordless vocals chanting questions that only a demon could decipher. Side two starts off like a lost Suicide demo from 1973: a broken synth spits out a beastly pattern while a single tom drum keeps time with Echoplexed mumbling, as washed-out cymbals flail about on the floor. Some heavy, sick shit we have here!

There are too many drone, noise, and freak-fuck LPs out there right now. This LP will cleanse your bowels of the flooded market of underground music. This record sounds like nothing you've ever heard before. Rahdunes have unleashed a work that will strongly stand the test of time, so step up and shake their hands, because as one of the song titles says, "Meeting you is like sucking God's cock." Toodle pip, no worries; cheers then.

Artist: RUSTED SHUT Title: Rehab
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
EJ67CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
10/25/04
***Rusted Shut formed in 1986 and continue to lay their repetitive napalm music on the lucky unwashed of Texas. As performers, their live show is infamously entertaining, arguing, backhands, kicking and all. Leader Don Walsh, a former oil rig worker, writes romantic lines like "I never asked to be born / I wish I would fuckin' die" and "Do you like this life / Do you like to slice?" Though made by lovely harmless people, Rehab is the culmination of many years of genuine hatred, and with this long-delayed sophomore release, the whole Earth may now bathe in their infectious scorn.

The proper Rehab album (the first eight songs, barely released on CDR in 2003) was mixed and mastered beyond the red onto a frying cassette deck for maximum scuzz. A nice handful of hi-fi studio tracks rounds out the dish, making this fiveinch wonder a welcome return to pure rocking beauty, while providing a nourishing cleansing of the bile many of us live with in US04.

Rusted Shut is impossible to escape. When this ugly-as-sin noise-punk trio pollutes the stage with their filthy fuzz rumble, there will be rioting, vomiting, spasmodic thrashing, and possibly hurling of rotten vegetables. --Austin Chronicle

***To quote the greatest self-publicist of the modern rock era, "You wouldn't even know the sun was up unless there was a press release on it." Well, the sentence also works with "the sun was up" replaced by "a new record has been made by The Rebel." You really wouldn't know.

Why? I'll tell you why, Jimmy Somerville: Because Paul Simon, Paul McCartney and iTunes have formed the holy league of musical heritage protection and they are deliberately suppressing The Rebel so that he will continue in poverty and desperation to make the quality of music necessary to keep composition alive into the next century and beyond.

Do you know for instance why The Rebel's May 2001 appearance on Top of the Pops was canceled? You thought it was because Heather McCartney's leg fell off in the BBC canteen but it was just a cover up. They locked his garage door so that he couldn't escape and had to record the masterpieces you about to listen to on this 12 inch 45 rpm EP. Man! Fuck yeah!

Artist: TIA CARRERA Title: S/T
Format: LP Catalog
Number:

Price: $12.00 Label: Emperor Jones
Release
Date:
8/23/04
***Behold the Texas molten psych/blues band's stoned masterpiece, a 50-minute ride to '60s heaven via '70s hell. Though they've never practiced once, Tia Carrera features a trio of seasoned players convening with a mission to create heavy improv rock, and their long-standing residence every Psychedelic Friday (at Room 710 in Austin) is a thing of legend to the committed. There's a undeniable metal influence-- one might imagine Sleep's Jerusalem with a dope-sick Robin Trower at play here. But there's light at the end of the tunnel, as their delta doom leads to white blind psych again and again.

This vinyl document was professionally recorded live in front of an inebriated audience, and the cover is presented in a sick, eye-piercing pink and black silkscreened cover printed on heavy stock.

This instrumental power trio from Austin jams with A-bomb quality, like ... Guru Guru shredding Jimi Hendrix's 'Machine Gun' at halfspeed.

1. Bong Beat
2. Doom
3. The G Thing/Old School/Bacon and Eggs

Formed from the ashes of Awesome Cool Dudes and The Tuxedo Killers, the band crept up on the Austin scene in early 2006 like coffee in a cup, bourbon in a glass, and fine grass.

Snacks opens with the band's theme song led by a no-fi boys choir then crashes into full-on stereo mayhem with "1-2-3 Pissmop." "Let's All Get Fades" begins with a mangled heap of strangled yelping and carefully picked single notes before a crushing guitar interlude gobbles up the mix. The epic closing track, "Bananafana," begins as a typical dinosaur montage: crunch, stomp, splatter, attack-- before diving head first into an endless Flipper-meets-Sabbath-on-45rpm dirge that destroys all sense of time.

WDRTE's live show (which earned them personal high-fives from David Byrne at SXSW 2006) is a sight to behold: two drummers face off, players fight for room on the stage, and the singers begin arguing before the first note sounds. During the set expect flying objects (not limited to Pabst cans) and a fluid line between the audience and the stage. Twenty-five minutes later you'll be grinning and sweating, like you just saw the shortest horror movie ever.
