Artist: GRESHAM Title: It's Always Been There
Format: CD Catalog

Price: $13.00 Label: Function 8
Release

***Inner city folk blues. Campfire music for the third millennium. Beach tunes for young winos and veteran freight hoppers. Light some candles, dim the lights, pour yourself a tall one. Sit on a stoop. Pet dogs. Play basketball. It's Always Been There is the debut album from Gresham, a long-awaited follow-up to 1999's critically acclaimed "Far From Under" 12-inch (out of print).

Eleven powerful songs from the heart and soul, deceptively simple, instantly endearing, featuring a who's-who of the incestuous SF music scene: jackass-about-town and pro-skateboarding legend Tommy Guerrero (MoWax, Galaxia, Function 8) on bass and guitar; Tim DeGaugh (Jet Black Crayon) on drums; Arthur Liboon (ex-Mordred) on bass; Sam Bass (Deadweight) on cello; Gregg Galbreathe on Rhodes; Rich Millman (Zen Guerilla) on guitar; and label chief Gadget on production, drums, programming and scratches.

A twenty-something cat singing with a vulnerable intensity like he's a thousand years years old, Gresham is a holy fool. A Persian cowboy flying high across the West on a Sleek Yellow Dolphin, commanding stages big and small with the arresting presence of Abe Vigoda channeling Janis Joplin with a dash of Jello Biafra. God love him. Born in Los Angeles to a typical American family of foreigners, weaned on Iranian dinners, Irish culture and Sunset Strip Rock & Roll. He was lured to San Francisco by rumors of blatant debauchery and full moon dance parties on the beaches above Santa Cruz. Think RZA meets Bon Scott at Reggae on the River, with guitars. Well, the new millennium is here, the Holy Fool has finally made good in the studio, and here he comes. Get ready for the high madness in your ear holes and the Amazing Flying Dolphin Circus, coming to your plateau soon.

Artist: JET BLACK CRAYON Title: In The Interim
Format: CD+DVD Catalog
Number:
FER88817
Price: $13.00 Label: Function 8
Release
Date:
3/31/08
***Jet Black Crayon re-emerges with their fifth release and the first since 2004's Inaccuracies of the Mind Machine. On In The Interim, Tommy Guerrero (Quannum Projects, Mo'Wax, Galaxia, Function 8), Monte Vallier (ex-Swell, Def American/American Recordings, Beggars Banquet) and Gadget (Function 8) worked closely with independent filmmakers, and seven of the nine tracks on the album are complemented with short films. The filmmakers include Andrew Paynter (music photographer, artist), Dan Wolfe (skateboard filmmaker: Real Skateboards, Nike SB, Adidas SB, etc.), Greg Hunt (skateboard filmmaker: DC Shoes, Transworld Media, Alien Workshop), Cheryl Dunn (filmmaker and photographer: Beautiful Losers) and Christophe Beaucourt (independent French filmmaker).

Those familiar with Jet Black Crayon will find a renewed soundscape, and those familiar with Guerrero's music will note a more visual, cerebral, and textural sound. The interplay between music and film on In the Interim is key. The creative process was a true collaboration-- the band and the filmmakers exchanged rough mixes and edits, allowing them to shape the respective audio and visual parts in tandem. Some of the songs dynamically move to the films while others create a moody score. Check out musical cameos from John Herndon and Dan Bitney (Tortoise) on "Lost in the Fog," the powerful spoken word of Pete Simonelli (The Enablers) on "My Fair Romans," and longtime Jet Black Crayon collaborator Charlie Hall playing drums on "Brighter Days."

Prior to the release of In the Interim, the film/song "Lost in the Fog" (film by Dan Wolfe) was accepted into the Underskatement 4 Film Festival.

On their first full length release for Function 8 Records, Jet Black Crayon takes two steps sideways and nine leaps forward. The record is a beautiful whole, performed by Tommy Guerrero, Monte Vallier and Gadget, with drumming from Johnny Herndon (Tortoise, Isotope 217, A Grape Dope), Charlie Hall, and then some. It's been crafted and fine-tuned every inch of the way-- music for mourning stars and dapper dervishes.

Where "Trace" and "Orca" lay low in the cut, drums skittering about, bass lines plunking heavy, "If Only" soars to new and glorious heights. "Eyes Closed, Numbers Appear" tolls like a funeral dirge-- a slow, strange highway to Somewhere Else, leaving one puzzled, exhausted, and wanting more. Melodicas wail away and live strings add striking eeriness. It's sublime, mature stuff. "The Mentalist," for instance, wants a drive along the Coast. "Tomorrow Was Raining" sounds like it just stepped out of an Alex Cox movie. This is soulful, quirky and beautiful music, from a group of fine young fellows reaching for something more.
