Artist: SONIC YOUTH Title: Dirty 4 Lp Box Set
Format: 4xLP Catalog
Number:
GOO05
Price: $29.00 Label: Goofin'
Release
Date:
8/25/03
***Sonic Youth's landmark 1992 album Dirty was re-released in a double-CD deluxe edition package by Universal Records in April, making it part of a series that includes classic albums by Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, and The Who. The corresponding quadruple-LP box set on the band's own Goofin' Records imprint includes: the original 15 album tracks; nearly two dozen bonus tracks culled from B-sides ("Genetic," "Hendrix Necro," "The Destroyed Room," "Is It My Body," "Personality Crisis," "The End Of The End Of The Ugly" and the eight-minute epic "Tamra"), outtakes ("Stalker," "Youth Against Fascism" and "Wish Fulfillment"), and rehearsal tapes from the period (the previously released "Little Jammy Thing" and previously unreleased songs "Lite Damage," "Dreamfinger," "Barracuda," "New White Kross," "Guido," "Moonface," "Poet In The Pit" and "Theoretical Chaos"); an eye-watering trove of full-color artwork; and essays from Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and journalist/co-conspirator Byron Coley.

The band's eighth official album, Dirty reflects the influence of touring partners such as Mudhoney and Nirvana; indeed, the team behind Nevermind -- producer Butch Vig and mixer Andy Wallace-- helped to craft an explosive, intense yet melodic rock album which would become arguably the band's most commercially and critically successful work to date.

Rock has never seen a band quite like Sonic Youth. Dirty is a great Sonic Youth disc ... among the band's most unified and unforgettable recorded works.... The aura of insurgency provides a charged context for the disc's more personal songs, upping the intensity and the emotional stakes and fusing a collection of diverse tracks into a scorched and scorching whole. Dirty is a burner. --Robert Palmer, Rolling Stone

  • The ultimate Dirty set features more than 20 previously unreleased and hard-to-find B-Sides, outtakes and demos
  • Photos, artwork and liner notes from Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, and Byron Coley
  • A classic from the year punk broke

***Sonic Youth have turned 21 years of age in 2002. The apprenticeship is over. They are now legal to fully rock on. Murray Street is where it gets interesting. The name comes from the street where Sonic Youth create rock'n'roll. This album was written by Sonic Youth with newest member Jim O'Rourke, who helped engineer and did the mixing under the watchful eye and baffling behavior of the original SY members. The cover is a photograph taken by Monique, two children secured by webbing, at one with goddess earth. Inside are photos by Milanese lensman Stefano Giovaninni.

There are seven songs:

1. Disconnection Notice - about the loss of questionable power to moldy fig authority
2. The Empty Page - a song lifted from the journals of John Cage one sun-filled summer day in Paris, 1968
3. Rain On Tin - about the heraldry of camaraderie in the face of political insanity.
4. Strawberry Patch - about Kim
5. Karenology - about Lee
6. Plastic Sun - a song which reaches out with an olive branch soaked in scum for the N'Sync- and Durst-addled record industry
7. Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style - about adult culture as the new underground

  • Indie vinyl of Sonic Youth's major label CD
  • The first Sonic Youth rock studio album following the assimilation of Jim O'Rourke

*** Sonic Youth was birthed in 1981 in downtown New York City. Their eponymous debut followed in '82 and burned holes in bins at any record store crazy enough to carry it. For the next twenty-five years the group has continued to release beyond-category documents of sonic death-rock for discerning freak lovers everywhere.

Rather Ripped was recorded through the waning hours of 2005 into the dawn sunshine of 2006 at the venerable Sear Sound Studios in NYC's fading theater district. Mixed at Sear Sound and at Hoboken, NJ's Water Music by the golden ear of John Agnello, the album exhibits SY in positive vibration mode. Rather Ripped features twelve songs of forward motion and harmonic/melodic surprise with vocals shared by the frontline of Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo with Steve Shelley gluing the rhythms to the floorboards. The band bursts out o' the barn with "Incinerate," contemplates holy war mind games on "Do You Believe in Rapture?" and keeps cruising strong through track after track of risk-laden rock, finally floating away with the curious "Or." This is a straight-up Sonic Youth field on fire, with a compact potency of rock 'n' roll enlightenment. Rather ripped, indeed.

    • Exclusive vinyl edition of Sonic Youth's latest monsterpiece
    • Recorded and mixed at NYC's Sear Sound Studios, Hoboken's Water Music, the band's downtown Murray St. studio and at J Mascis's house in Amherst, MA
    • Vinyl-only cover art by artist Christopher Wool

***Sonic Youth's eponymous debut EP, reissued in a deluxe double- LP edition on the band's own Goofin' imprint, was recorded in late 1981 at Radio City Music Hall in NYC and originally released on composer Glenn Branca's Neutral label. The album is loosely based on compositions the newly formed group had performed at that year's week-long Noisefest event (and remains the only recorded document of an early line-up featuring actor Richard Edson on drums). The newly remastered vinyl also features extra live material from a 1981 gig, and a track from a previously unheard studio session.

***After twenty-three years of explosive creativity Sonic Youth throws down what may be their heaviest classic since the genre-breaking Daydream Nation. Nurse is the nineteenth long player by the New York City supernova, an action explosion Time magazine has already tagged as "Sonic Youth's most adventurous and soul-stirring release to date, by a goddamn country mile."

Ten songs of American beauty and sonic death: on "Pattern Recognition" Kim Gordon takes Justin Timberlake's hand and sticks it in a tendon-shredding meat grinder; they gay marriage the hell out of religious zealot war pigs Cheney, Rumsfeld, Bush and Ashcroft with the meditative "Peace Attack"; Bare Trees-era Fleetwood Mac jams with Jealous Again-era Black Flag on the heart-pounding "Unmade Bed" and "I Love You Golden Blue"; the core reactor awesomeness of "Paper Cup Exit" reduces such legends as Led Zeppelin and Yes to just so much British schoolboy whimpering.
