***Eddie Def of the pioneering Bullet Proof Space Travelers DJ crew follows up last year's acclaimed Hip Hop Slam release, Wax People, with Open Your Mind (Wax People II)-another ear bending blend of Eddie Def's trademark megamixes and tweaked out turntable/drum machine innovations. The often elusive DJ is one incredibly prolific artist constantly holed up in the studio working on some new recording project. His discography includes such recent recordings as his ongoing five part DMT (Drum Machine Technicians) collaborations with DJ Cue on Stray Records, his collaborations with Extrakd on Return of the DJ Vol. 3 (BOMB) and on Bill Laswell's 1999 Material release IntonarumoriM (Island), his contributions to the Deep Concentration series (OM), the highly anticipated Bullet Proof Space Travelers album and Cue's Hip Hop Shop Vol. II (both on Stray), the break record he's recording with DJ Marz, the Poochie Breaks album, the Gonerville project (similar lineup to El Stew with Buckethead, etc.), The Last Kreep five part series that will include the Instrumental Pills and Stuff full-lengths (Stray), an ongoing collaboration with Mike Patton (Faith No More fame), plus this amazing, diverse 18-track collection.

***An introductory solo album from hip hop sound-styler, and Bay Area DJ/producer DJ MARZ of SPACE TRAVELERS, SACRED HOOP, 99th DIMENSION and LATYRX. Thirteen tracks of refreshing hip hop mix action compiled from MARZ's first four (tape-only) recordings which are either hard to find or just plain out of print. Artist: DJ QUEST Title: Questside
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
HHS27
Price: $13.00 Label: Hip Hop Slam
Release
Date:
5/21/01
***DJ Quest's Questide (untold tales) offers up seventeen never-before-heard tracks (solo and collaborative) spanning the past eight years of the world famous DJ's career. Included is the Bullet Proof Space Travelers' brand new "1000 Proof Bass," the lost 1997 Space Travelers' track "9.9" which features Eddie Def on electric guitar and scratches, Cue on beats, and Quest on scratches and violin. "I can't play violin. I was just tweaking and manipulating it for effects," insists Quest of the impromptu session recording that could be filed under "alternative" or "experimental turntablism."

DJ Disk (Skratch Piklz, Buckethead, etc.) joins Quest on the 1998 recording "Twas Night," while another ol' skool partner and collaborator, DJ 2 Fresh, joins Quest on the retro-electro "Code 48." Bulletproof member Eddie K joins Quest in two capacities: rapping on "1000 Proof Bass" and as producer/beat maker on the 2001 recording "Slow & Sick." Albert Mathias (percussion) and Andrew Kushin (contra bass) from Quest's other group, experimental jazz/hip hop group trio Live Human, join him on two previously unreleased recordings, both from 1998, "Fish and Chips" (recorded in London) and the short-but-sweet "Interlude" (recorded in San Francisco). The CD's liner notes by Billy Jam include a DJ Quest history, complete discography, and DJ Battle history.

Artist: LIVE HUMAN Title: Monostereosis
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
HHS13CD
Price: $13.00 Label: Hip Hop Slam
Release
Date:
3/13/00
***Live Human occupy a unique space in the genres of both free improv jazz and hip hop. Albert Mathais and Andrew Kushtin are both former members of improv jazz collectives, while DJ Quest, a member of Battle DJ collectives, the Space Travelers and the Bulletproof Scratch Hamsters, fleshes out their live beats'n'bass with spontaneous and stunning sleights of wrist. For Live Human, no instrument is subordinate to any other. Their live sampling draws freely from their own compositions as vinyl source material is chopped around and transformed, pushed and pulled to form a mad, spliced up flow.

Following the successes of their first Fat Cat 12-inch and live UK dates, the hip hop / improv trio returns with its second album-their first to fully incorporate studio tricknology. Samples and overdubs augment the band's live drums / double bass / turntable improv; throughout 15 tracks, Live Human retain the free flowing dynamics at their root, while the enhanced production allows them to flesh out and more tightly sculpt their material. Mono-stereosis runs heavy on variety-ripples, flexes, and an awesome new sense of coherence-but the solid drumming of Mathais and Kushtin's bass explorations provide a shifting foundation, and Quest's scratchadelic turntable wizardry dazzles with an array of fresh sonic events.

"The essence of instrumental hip hop at its most organic." -Hip Hop Connection
"Potentially groundbreaking."-The Wire
"Unexpected pleasure all around."-Cafe Bliss,br> "Hip hop science to leave your body to."-NME
"Wicked stuff."-M8
