The album begins with three short pieces, sonic examples of texture meeting metal-- like a djinn trapped in molten gold, attempting to burst free from his cage but only managing to express rage via infinie temporary sculptures ranging from the nightmares of the Muetter Museum to futuristic expressions of nature not yet captured by a conscious eye. The final track is 28 minutes of pure glory that will surely become one of noise rock's classics. Massively blown-out and beautifully recorded, "Jederfursich" lays down twin mirrors side by side as a model of infinity is allowed to morph through sounds that recall the energy of existence and the sand of time itself.

Birds of Maya did what countless garage rock geeks try and fail at: dust off 1968 and bring it back to life without making it look like museum piece. Bringing on the best of 60s power trios like Hendrix and Cream, a whiff of Blue Cheer's bongwater, Black Sabbath's bass heavy paranoia, and Stooges bum-out, they were sloppy in all the right places. Blues Control might just be the missing link between Van Halen and legendary experimentalist Henry Flynt. They are a duo. Lea Cho plays swank but grounded atmospheric keyboard parts (think Harold Budd), through which guitar player and manipulator of assorted junk-on-table Russ Waterhouse cuts, whittles and lays to waste. It's a hazy, spaced world that exists between fuzzed distortion, jabbering electronics, and a lazy, stay-in-bed psychedelic glaze, with rhythmic keyboards pulsating below it all a la a guy named Florian-- and you can choose which one you want. Oh yeah, I gotta mention the humid bikini-vibe that permeates the entire album.

So, is there a blues angle to it? Yeah, but you've got to bury yourself in it or dig your way in. Come out stinking if you want.

Anthony Ezee Tiger is this one-man band dude from Michigan. On his side of this split, he takes one-man plod and somehow turns on the Health and Efficiency vibe without encouraging a bunch of vegans or non-smokers to give their opinions. After the album's subtle opener takes you to the noisy scraped loops and menacing guitar of "Violent Stupid Friend" featuring The Baseball Astrologer with a "right on" rant, you are taken to the screaming backwards ecstasy of "Loop 03." Metempsychotic Melodies continues to document Higgs' rise as a solo performer.

Raw picked banjo drones dominate Metempsychic Melodies as the instrumental "Universal Salutation" fades into the waking dream soliloquy of observation "Love Abides." "Leontocephaline Rhapsody" is a long, waltzy drone with enough spooky atmosphere for one to think that it could have been recorded at Sunshine studios as there is a heavy Vogel vibe to the whole thing. Rumor has it engineer Tim Green told Higgs that he had to fade the track otherwise they were going to be arrested. Vocals return for the closing track "All Cherished Things" an epic about change, sound and transformation.

Ancestral Songs is comprised of apocalyptic tunes, a banjo raag, mellifluous birdsong, and the sci-fi-sounding duet of a searing Jew's harp and toy piano. Why? Well, equally cool names like Black Sabbath, Venom and Pentagram were already taken. But also, the name Lesbian evokes pure, sexually charged freedom -- and that's what rock music is all about.

But enough about the name, let's talk about the Lesbian sound; it's heavy, melodic, dramatic and dynamic. The Seattle-based quartet's multifaceted debut album Power Hör on Holy Mountain (Om, Six Organs of Admittance) heralds the birth of The New Wave of American Psychedelic Metal. Each of the album's four tracks shifts moods, dynamics and styles. In any given song, Lesbian deftly lunges from black metal-style blast-beat-and-16th-note-guitar-lines into '70s styled stoner rock riffing and then leaps into lush melodic passages reminiscent of Godspeed You Black Emperor!. The band blends the best elements of many styles of metal: doom, thrash, black, progressive and, yes, even good old "heavy" metal.

Lesbian was formed on a whim in April 2004 by members of Pacific Northwest thunder-sludge bands Golgothan Sunrise, Asva and The Abodox for a one-off set at Seattle's Funhouse. The response was so overwhelming that guitarists Arran McInnis and Daniel La Rochelle, bassist/vocalist Dorando Hodous and drummer Benjamin Kennedy decided to continue on with Lesbian as their primary focus. The band's riffs are dissected and cut into vivid and imaginative parts that splinter and shift in shades of light and dark without coming across overly-technical and soulless. The cinematic quality of Power Hoer envelops a vast array of moods and ideas. It's entrancing and psychedelic while utterly pummeling at the same time.

In order to capture the dynamic force of its live sound, Lesbian enlisted the much-lauded ear of producer Randall Dunn (Sunn0))), Boris, Earth), to help the band achieve its musical vision. Power Hör was recorded and mixed at both the legendary Avast! and Dunn's own Aleph Studio. Stephen O'Malley (Sunn0)))) designed the stunning cover art for the band's debut, befitting its sonic density and complexity. Incorporated into the layout is a striking logo design by John Santos (High on Fire, Kylesa, A Life Once Lost), whose artwork will also grace the cover of an upcoming split LP with Seattle black metallers Book of Black Earth.

Lesbian will be touring extensively in support of the album and has already begun writing new mind-expanding material. But, for now, this is the Power Hör. Clock in and drop out.

Variations on a Theme is comprised of three long songs employing a series of rhythmic chants whose cadence-like textural drive conveys flight. The album's numerous lyrics serve as symbolist vehicles to a state outside the field of time and space.

There's a big difference between playing every instrument and being a one-man band. Suffice it to say that Adam Payne is a one-man band akin to Emitt Rhodes broadcast over solid-state transmitters. Maybe Grant Hart has the better voice while Bob Mould churned out better lyrics. What if the Kirkwoods melded into a creature that couldn't punch itself? Adam Payne, as one band, has made an LP that matches the chops and hooks of Captain Trundlow's Sky Company or the bits of The Only Ones that are consistently lifted. The rumors that Payne was asked to produce the next Mudcrutch album have yet to be confirmed. Organ opens like Up The Academy but ends like Zabriskie Point in frustrated abandon that only leaves the listener wiser.

The second side of the LP is a suite dedicated to the state of California complete with references ranging from the construction of the railroads, the natural beauty of the land and the mating rituals of elephant seals. It ends with a distorted take on Los Angeles via UK-colored glasses with the title track which erupts into epic, pulsing, skronk-raunch riffs that cease to abate for the duration of the song's 10-minute length (all the while making references to summer, SST records, earthquakes and helicopters flying through the streets of Hollywood seeking out pillaging Slayer fans. Really. It's all there).

Chocolate Gasoline has a less harsh demeanor, a la Accelerator-era Royal Trux if the Stones-meter was set a little closer to "Under Cover of the Night" than "Dancin' with Mr. D," especially on the opener, "Lonely Hearts Killer." The remaining tracks stretch out via influences ranging from hard dub, early PiL, no wave, block-banging hip hop, and kraut-dance/industrial, if one could imagine a version of Viva more about bikinis than white overalls. Nonetheless, all of this can be played with real instruments and "rocked out" in a live setting, which is what the group intends to do.

"After a brief, textural opening, Dust and Chimes rekindles the aplomb of "Visnu" with a mortal vs. guitar death dance called "Assyria"; it soon subsides into a calmer, introspective mood. The simple riffs are rooted in American folk, but suggestive of an Ottoman court. Six Organs stick with bare-bones song arrangements - most cuts are just dressed up with overdubbed chimes and bells, and three are direct-to-tape acoustic slices.

The understated nature of the songs - often serving primarily as launch pads for extended acoustic extemporization - dictates that the album grows on the listener rather than convinces in a single play. Prayer for Chibi might be the ultimate Suishou no Fune album; with two disks and more than two hours of music, the group finally stretches out and lets their music flow like it never has before. Much about Suishou no Fune has had to do with volume, but this new set of duets adds forays into starker songwriting and a languid serenity that works to make one feel as if it were necessary to hold one's breath through the entire album.

Suishou no Fune originated in Tokyo's fertile psychedelic scene. After landing a spot on PSF's Tokyo Flashback 5 and releasing Where the Spirits Are in 2006, the group ventured out from Japan and took every opportunity to play across the United States and Europe. During one of these trips in the spring of 2007, the group-- down to the crucial duo of Pirako and Kurenai-- went into a recording studio for a few days and laid down eight massive new tracks.

Two tracks, chosen by the group-- "Becoming a Flower" and "Till We Meet Again"--appear on this special vinyl edition. Much about Suishou no Fune has had to do with volume, but this new set of duets adds forays into starker songwriting and a languid serenity that works to make one feel as if it were necessary to hold one's breath through the entire album.

The group's sound runs from massively distended nod-outs that recall parts of the first Fushitsusha album through weird duo tracks that orbit a parallel universe where late-period John Fahey was the prime influence on Charalambides, infernal Dead C/Gate style guitar abuse and achingly beautiful comedown ballads. The twin vocalists are massively different in their approach, with Pirako singing in a high wayward style that's all throat and no lungs while Kageo works from the other end of the pipes with a ripped Father Yod/Jim Morrison/Keiji Haino polyglot. Simply one of the greatest out-of-nowhere groups to come out of the Tokyo underground in years and the undisputed stars of PSF's recent Tokyo Flashback 5 compilation. --Volcanic Tongue

Tivol plays a throbbing, violent and aggressive strain of acid rock that has nothing to do with subtlety. Their already hypnotic material is further enhanced by screamed vocals that do not seem to emanate from this earth. Comprised of four tracks from two extremely limited edition CDRs released on the 267 Lattajjaaa and Time-Lag labels, Holy Mountain gives this material a proper CD release with vastly improved sound quality and charming new artwork silkscreened by the talented hands and mind of the Free Porcupine Society's Robert Fisk.

Finland's Tivol might be one of the best kept secrets on the Nordic peninsula.... Freaking genius! I can't recommend this enough. For any and all fans of the Finnish underground, and psych/kraut in general, Tivol is a must own. Totally fucking excellent. 9/10

The album's five tracks are named after demons from the Goetia, evoked and compelled into obedience by King Solomon, contained in a bronze vessel that was sealed with magic symbols. As a result, the music is alight with giant, pulsating fire storms of oceanic sound and shorter pieces that are the sonic equivalent to opening cans containing mechanical dreams. There is a magic to these sounds that surely goes back to that first electronic musician in Egypt over 2,000 years ago. The tools might be different but the spectacular results are the same.

Dos sounds off as the inauguration speech of a group accepting the minimalist psych bop crown that once adorned the likes of Neu and Loop. If possible, their brand of whipping fuzz hooks have gotten groovier. "Motorbike" begins the program with an attack of bleeding organ and cicada chirps-- a wiley, wheel-spinning cloud-kicker indeed. "For So Long" introduces the hip-swayed, shoulder-dropping dance steps of the album. At this point, the guitar delivers a concise Fogerty / Karoli vibe of stiff and loose kraut blues. Closing side one is the stop-motion go-go anthem "Down by the Sea." Imagine yourself in the back of a cigarette boat with Alan Vega and Takashi Mizutani circling Easter Island. Smile as you melt under the glare of their mirrored sunglasses staring your own face back at you.

The needle drops on side two. Beyond the dawning of the age is "Aquarian Time," a dense number that demands more weed and less booger-sugar. A steady plink of keys blipping like bright satellites in dark space accents this track's blissed-out sludge. The hypnotic pop grace of "Fallin'," the soundtrack for the last log on the fire as Winter eternally breaks into Spring, will stick in your mind until the record is played again on speakers of any size.

The band released two acclaimed records in 2006, beginning early in the year with a self-released 10-inch, Shrinking Moon for You. The record quickly sold out, after capturing the attention of well-regarded tastemakers, such as Tom Lax and Byron Coley, who penned rave reviews on Siltblog, and in The Wire magazine, respectively. A 7-inch followed on the Sick Thirst label, and received similar praise from music bloggers, as well as from veteran scribe David Fricke in Rolling Stone.

The band has three 2007 releases planned: this LP/CD for Holy Mountain, a 7-inch for Sub Pop, and a 7-inch for Pollymaggoo Records. They recently played NoisePop 2007 with Roky Erickson, as well as a showcase at the SXSW Music Conference in Austin, TX.
