***Out of Metz, France comes the ugly and brutal noise-punk of A.H. Kraken. Their name is an amalgam of a facist dictator and a sea monster, and their sound is a wild, intense blur of bludgeoning rhythms, industrial clatter, scraping guitars, and caterwauling vocals. Citing influences as disparate PiL, Motoerhead, US Maple, Suicide, Flipper, The Shaggs, and Chrome, A.H. Kraken could implode or explode at any given second. Everything is yelled in barely intelligible French, so it's impossible to say what they're bellowing about, though one song is titled "Kevin Costner Est Un Acteur Americain." When bassist/vocalist S.J. was asked, he assured that the lyrics are "all about peace and love." Be skeptical.

A.H. Kraken are pure, unrestrained throttle-burn. They create landscapes of sound with instruments that are obviously getting the shit beat out of them. This mega-decibel audio destruction at its most overwrought is not for the faint of heart.

"A.H. Kraken are the best band in France." --Jack from Volt

***The Red Records is proud to be home to the latest full-length from Atlanta's Black Lips. Though barely in their 20's, the Black Lips have already toured the US and Europe several times, released two albums on Bomp! records, lost a lead guitarist in a car crash, built a rabid cult following and earned a well deserved reputation one of the wildest live bands around due to onstage fist fights, nudity, violence, arson, projectile vomiting and other body fluids. You don't want to stand to close to the stage at a Black Lips performance. This grimy and chaotic four-piece garage-punk band truly don't give a fuck and will unintentionally prove it live time and again.

Formed with the intention to cross the sound of the Back From The Grave 60's garage compilation series with the Germs, the Lips have developed a sound unlike anyone else. Anyone familiar with the group will no doubt be a bit surprised by the sound of their latest "Let It Bloom" album which, while still skuzzy and raw, contains their catchiest and most melodic moments to date. If Royal Trux had listened to the Troggs instead of the Rolling Stones, they might sound like this (though the album does sound quite Stonesy at times).

The Black Lips are the only current garage band that matters. --Mick Collins

Like Creedence crossed with gauze-wrapped early '90s garagists the Mummies. --Village Voice

Think '70s sloppy punks like Flipper or The Germs bashing out some '60s garage from the Nuggets series. This is punk on the front porch - damaged rock for damaged people. --Alternative Press

*** Black Time hails from London, England. They are skinny, black-clad boys and girls with bad attitudes and a desire to make intrusive, obnoxious rock'n'roll music.

Their debut, Blackout, was recorded, mixed and mastered entirely in analog and pressed on heavy-weight virgin vinyl in a limited edition of several hundred. Immediately heralded by hipsters in the know as the latest, greatest rockiniroll band that matters, the album quickly soldout, becoming fodder for collector scum the world over.

Black Time play out very rarely and when they do itis quite an event. The select few who have been initiated into this cult of sound have reported a loss of speech, hair and bowel control after witnessing a performance. The band plans to bring their act stateside in 2005, to the Deep South in particular, with a revue featuring leather biker-boys, wall-projected homemade slasher films, whip-cracking tiger-girls and well-respected media professionals eating their own shit live on stage.

This is the heavy vampire sound. The sound of the undead stumbling through the twilight, feeding off broken, youthful dreams, unable to stop their endless march or neutered howling. Black Time stands between us and the things which soothe but do not heal -- the magnet-pull of American rockiniroll records, cheap tobacco, tea, beer, movies and radio -- the things George warned us about.

Artist: BLACK TIME Title: Double Negative
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
ITR153CD
Price: $12.00 Label: In The Red
Release
Date:
10/6/08
***London's Black Time have carved a hefty reputation for themselves over the past few years through scattered tours across Europe and the US, numerous limited-edition 7-inch records, two dense yet danceable long-player albums, and a manifesto that, among other things, espouses "fuck and rage" and the "heavy vampire sound."

Double Negative is the latest full-length in the Black Time canon. Fans of the band's previous output will not be disappointed, especially if they want to hear the fractured, art-damaged scree of their singles forged with the trebly garage punk of their two albums. The trio of Lemmy Caution, Janie Too Bad, and Mr. Stix outdo themselves here and turn in the most fully realized Black Time release to date. If you've been aching for Messthetics and Back From The Grave compilations, then look no further. Double Negative is the absinthe you've been wanting to drink.

Known for their propensity for all things black, Black Time carries their theme of bleak darkness to the nth degree. With tracks like "Skeleton Factory," "Blot Out The Sun," "Little Death," and "I'm Gonna Haunt You When I'm Gone" (featuring lead vox by Janie), you know you're in for the feel-bad record of the year.

Watch for Black Time to spread their bad vibes on their East Coast tour in Fall '08.

"Not for the faint-hearted at all, this is extreme rock 'n' roll at maximum; if you can listen to this twice in a row then you are extremely sick in the head." --Piccadilly Records

"Performed and recorded with a technical finesse that makes Billy Childish sound like David Gilmour." --AMG

"Black Time makes labelmates Pussy Galore and the Black Lips sound positively polished by comparison." --LA Weekly

***The point is talent over ability, ideas over proficiency, energy over competence-- action, time, and vision. Add some musical instruments to this confusion and the resulting mess is Black Time-- shambolic but passionate, hollerin' and wailin' at the dying of the red light. If you pay attention to zines, blogs and websites dedicated to sub-underground rock, then no doubt you are aware that Black Time have been getting favorably compared to Crime, Pussy Galore, The Electric Eels, The Cramps and The Fall. A string of hopelessly limited edition vinyl 7-inches and 12-inches have stoked the fire. The hype is justified in this case, as Midnight World, the band's second full-length, is the perfect marriage of chug-a-lug, primeval drumming, opaque layers of guitars, new wave cinema references, '60s and '70s punk, lo-fi static and overwrought vocals from frontman Lemmy Caution. The best UK export since The Country Teasers, Black Time will be touring the US Summer 2006, and they are not to be missed.

***Blacktop was the first in a series of post-Gories bands led by Mick Collins. In the summer of 1994 he traveled south to Denton, Texas, to collaborate with Darin Lin Wood, Alex Cuervo and Janet Walker and create the band that would be dubbed Blacktop. They wanted a heavier sound than the Gories or Darin's band Fireworks (both bass-less), so they added a bass and plenty of bottom in the production. The result is a mutant cross between The Gories' raw R'n'B skronk and the Birthday Party's overwrought squeal. The record was received warmly by fans and the press alike when it was first released, and tours soon followed. This is about the time everything started to go horribly wrong. Problems with chemistry and chemicals soon ravaged the band and they imploded on the eve of their debut European tour.

I've Got A Baaad Feeling About This - The Complete Recordings collects everything done by the band during their brief existence onto one CD-- their entire album, single sides and tracks found only on the Australian issue of their album. Both the artwork and the mastering have been given serious overhauls to make this an essential purchase for any Detroit garage aficionado.

***For the past several years, a slew of 12-inches, 7-inches, and cassettes have been released by the mysterious Brooklyn artist known as Blank Dogs. Blank Dogs is actually singular-- it's the insanely prolific one-man band of Mr. Blank Dog. Not too much is known about the guy behind the bedroom new wave / pop / punk act and he's usually covering his face with masks or bedspreads, but that's fine. The sound is Joy Division vocal lines with The Cure's synth and guitar melodies filtered through ancient, submerged keyboards and eroded recording equipment. And that voice? All the feedback in the world can't hide his knack for melody. Blank Dogs has been making plenty of rumbles in the noisier and more secretive outposts of the underground. All of their records were pressed in limited editions, sold out quickly, and, without fail, wound up fetching big bucks with collectors on eBay.

Under and Under is Blank Dogs' latest and most massive release to date-- a double-album housing 20 brand new songs (15 on the CD) that show off his pop chops to a greater extent than any of his previous releases. Also, for the first time, Blank Dogs has incorporated the assistance of outside musicians to lend a hand. Various artists from the Brooklyn music scene-- members of the Crystal Stilts and Vivian Girls, among others-- contribute this time around, though the sound remains as dusted and strange as anything Blank Dogs has done before.

"For all the musicians crafting grimy, lo-fi electro-rock, the man behind Blank Dogs takes it to another level...." --The Wire

"The music of Blank Dogs is all mid-tempo drum beats, discarded Cure basslines, and vocals that sound as if they were sung through a tape recorder submerged at the bottom of a frozen pond." --Fader

***Album number five finds Cristina Martinez (one-time member of Pussy Galore) and company in full, full force. Ten songs, every single second of every single one total rock'n'roll. 2000 didn't start until we'd all sung along with Cristina as she cooed "whoa-oh-ah-oohhhh" on "Chocolate"! Yup, smart, sexy, sassy, and very much of-the-moment, "Whiteout" is two tons of emotion-- happy, sad, ambivalent, moody, celebratory, dark around the edges, and, dare we say it, conducive to butt-shaking, provided with help from the Blues Explosion's Jon Spencer (guitar, vocals), Mark (the Goats) Boyce on keyboards and one of the sauciest the rhythm sections ever, Jens Jergensen and Hollis Queens. Also present in the studios, limos, and dressing rooms were producers Tore Johannson and Andy Gill, mixers Jim Sclavunos and Jim Thirlwell, and engineer Bill Emmons.

***Henderson, Tennessee's Jeffrey Novak is a name familiar to those who pay attention to the whole lo-fi-garage-punk underbelly of today's indie scene. He's released a handful of singles and at least one album on labels in the US and Europe as a one-man-band and with his former group, The Rat Traps. He's been at it for nearly five years and he's barely in his twenties. Cheap Time is his newest and most serious endeavor to date. Founded with Jemina Pearl and Nathan Vasquez of Be Your Own Pet, Cheap Time set out to recapture the essence of teenage schlock rock scuzz of such heroes as Redd Kross and The Runaways. Along the way, members shifted, as did the band's direction. An obsession with '70s glam power pop a la Sparks, The Quick, and Milk 'n' Cookies grew, and the music took on a twisted new slant never hinted in any of his previous projects. The results are the current line-up of Cheap Time and this full-length album.

Cheap Time's self-titled debut is 28 minutes of snotty punk pop perfection. From the New-York-Dolls-via-Germs screech of "Tight Fit" to the anglophile power pop of "Ginger Snap" to the bubblegum bounce of "Trip To The Zoo," this debut has instant classic stamped all over its bratty face.

***The Cheater Slicks have been scratching out their brand of rock'n'roll for more than 10 years. Too noisy and abstract for garage rock purists, too loud and too rock'n'roll for the indie rock crowd, but at the end of the day, too good to be ignored. This Boston band, now relocated to Columbus, Ohio, been described as everything qualified by something- psychedelic music for manic depressives, garage rock for serial killers, indie pop for ill-tempered hillbillies-but it's a lot simpler than that. The Cheater Slicks are the undisputed kings of misfit melancholia, anarchic amplification, and free-range low-end rumble. For their seventh album, the band trashes their own boundaries and refines their sound while remaining true to their primal spirit. Eleven new tracks, no two alike. No wonder bands like New Bomb Turks and Mudhoney cover 'Slicks tunes on their respective new albums. This is music as genuine and sincere as it gets.

***The Cheater Slicks have been responsible for some of the raunchiest racket around for more than fifteen years. Atonal and hateful. Music for misanthropes. Fuzzed out, freaked out and bummed out. Psychedelic-garage-noise-pop for miscreants. Music made by misfits for misfits. Tales of transsexuals, suicide attempts and bad acid trips. Eleven brand new slices of sludge so thick it'll clog your stereo speakers.

Started in Boston in 1987, the Cheater Slicks have built a huge body of recorded trash-garage-noise-melancholy pop-psychedelic dementia-rock'n'roll that has gone largely unrecognized by the music press and has made many garage rock purists run for the door. Their music is sometimes abstract and always intrusive and confrontational. Real connoisseurs of truly intense music have recognized the brilliance of this criminally over-looked band.

The Cheater Slicks began as a four piece that included a bass player - first with Merle Allin (GG's brother) and then with Alpo (former member of The Real Kids). After a couple of years the band decided to scale their line up down to a three piece - doing away with bass altogether. The Cheater Slicks recorded for a series of independent labels until in 1992 they called In The Red their home with their third album Whiskey. In 1995 they recorded their fourth album, Don't Like You, with Jon Spencer as producer. The band toured heavily behind this album with The Blues Explosion, Mudhoney and the Red Aunts. Their live shows are played at deafening volume. Mudhoney and the New Bomb Turks have covered their songs. In 1996 the band relocated to Columbus, Ohio where they remain to this day, more reclusive and misanthropic than ever.

***The teaser single from the upcoming album by the scourge of Detroit punk rock'n' roll. The A side is taken from the album as well as being said album's namesakeoan uncharacteristically melodic tune for this knuckle-dragging bunch. A song about making it with a babe from another planet, which Timmy Vulgar says was his attempt to write a song that sounds like Sparks (don't worry, it doesn't), and came out being the band's catchiest to date. The B side is exclusive to this single and is a pummeling track of pure caustic punk rock.

***The Clone Defects have come crashing out of the current Detroit rock'n'roll scene like a comet penetrating the Earth's atmosphere. Lead by wildman-about-town Tim Vulgar, The Clone Defects have earned quite a reputation over the last several years for their no-holds-barred live shows and their uncompromising recordings. The Clone Defects are rock'n'roll to the core: foul-mouthed, dirty, alcohol-fueled aggression that rightfully blasts out of the hi-fi at a pill party. They've released three singles (the first of which was recorded and produced by White Stripes' Jack White) and one album-- monoliths of pure rock action all. On Shapes Of Venus, they continue to blaze the same trail as their previous releases with even sharper songwriting skills. The sound is a biting mix of glam rock, Killed-By-Death-style punk, and some natural born midwest insanity. Some bands go out of their way to act weird, wild and fucked up, whereas the Clone Defects can't help it. This is the real article.

***Much of what is passed off as "punk rock" these days is pathetic and limp - no secret there. The Consumers were the real deal antithesis of pathos and limpness. Formed in early 1977, The Consumers were probably one of the very first in Phoenix, Arizona, to play punk rock. Influenced by punk scenes in England and New York, The Consumers cooked up a sound that was fast and hate-fueled. You will not find lyrics like "I'm going to find a way to drive you mad like piss on you or fuck your dad" on a Pennywise album, no sir.

The Consumers recorded their one and only album in a small Phoenix studio in December of 1977 - eleven scorching tracks delivered in nineteen minutes, all loaded with anger and pure nihilism - and immediately moved to Los Angeles. Once in L.A., the band hit the live circuit, playing clubs like the Masque and the Whiskey A Go Go. Their sets were often violent; in an incident documented by Slash magazine, the entire band once beat vocalist David Wiley bloody onstage for no good reason! It didn't take long for them to be banned from clubs all over town. Legendary punk record label Dangerhouse agreed to release their album, but within a few short months, the label folded and the band imploded. Eventually the band members went on to other things: guitarist Paul Cutler formed 45 Grave and later joined Dream Syndicate, vocalist Wiley formed the Human Hands and the rest went on to lives of drugs, the military or dead end jobs. Presently, only two members of the band are still living.

The Consumers album remained unreleased until 1994 when In The Red Records issued it as a limited-edition LP which sold out quickly. Now, for the first time, it is being issued on CD, newly re-mastered and sounding louder and nastier than ever. This is real punk rock - the kind FM radio is too chickenshit to deal with and video network lunkheads are paid handsomely to ignore.

  • Shocking early works by psychos who would go on to 45 Grave, Dream Syndicate, and Human Hands
  • Loud and nasty punk rock from 1977, on CD for the first time
  • Initial limited pressing of the vinyl sold out immediately

***London, England's Country Teasers' long overdue live album documents the sheer splendor of what is the Country Teasers live experience. Recorded in various locations across the UK and the USA, the imaginatively titled Country Teasers Live Album captures the band at its rawest, most powerful, most spontaneous and most drunken. Painstakingly assembled from the vast archives of Country Teasers live recordings by frontman Ben Wallers, Country Teasers Live Album collects some of the finest gems from the combo's various live broadcasts, board tapes, handheld audience bootleg recordings, and a couple of surprises. Off the cuff cover versions from the likes of the Butthole Surfers, Randy Newman, New Order and The Brainbombs can all be found here as well as curse words, false starts, song fragments, abrupt edits and audible tape hiss.

***The Country Teasers are best known for their stunning output on the Crypt and Fat Possum labels. How a band of Scots and Londoners crazily influenced by the likes of The Fall, Joy Division, Devo, Bauhaus, hip hop and country & western music wound up recording for labels best known for American rootsy-down-home-style output is anyone's guess. But here they are again with their most expansive and eclectic endeavor to date.

Science Hat Artistic Cube Moral Nosebleed Empire collects obscure singles, demos, outtakes and home recordings spanning the band's seven-year existence. 'Teasers front man Ben Wallers painstakingly pored through nearly twenty hours of material to find the best forty selections for the vinyl, and twenty for the CD, the concept being that each set of ten tracks represents a complete album. All together: "huh?" Wallers insists the double-vinyl set is actually four albums - pressed in an edition of one-thousand in a beautiful color gatefold jacket, by the way - and the compact disc, with twenty tracks extracted from that collection, is actually two albums.

Science Hat Artistic Cube Moral Nosebleed Empire offers the broadest range of the Country Teasers' styles, from the most savagely raw post-punk stomps to experimental electronic blow-outs. This collection is absolute proof that the Country Teasers are one of the most original bands around today.

On Secret Weapon Revealed At Last/FMSB we find the band at their rawest and most uncompromising-- an unlikely marriage of post-punk, industrial clatter, country, and roots music that is damaged to such a degree that Johnny Cash don't know but Gibby Haynes understands. Oh, we should also mention that the Country Teasers records are designed to offend those with PC values...mainly because those with PC values certainly deserve to be offended deeply. ***"In the industry, I am the only complete man..." sang Country Teaser's B.R. Wallers, quoting Naked Lunch, back in 1995. If modesty didn't forbid, he might've been speaking of his own band. Is there another current group operating at such a high level musically or lyrically? Evolving out of a prolific home recording project in the late '80s influenced by The Cure and Butthole Surfers, The 'Teasers debuted as a beguiling mixture of deconstructed country and dissonant post-punk. "Boycott the Studio" was their manifesto: "You will not find music where it is shown, only where it is hidden..."

The Empire Strikes Back, the group's eighth full-length, was recorded in Oregon-- 90,000 kilometers from the band's homein London-- when In the Red made good on a promise to find the band a live-in studio with an amenable engineer (Rich Wells of Portland's Supreme Reality Studios). Far from a sanitized "studio recording," the album is as damaged and unpredictable as any Teasers album (only with better microphones). The band's humor remains as strangely contradictory as ever, with Wallers juggling a cast of personae as far-flung as P.G. Wodehouse, Ice Cube, Winston Churchill, and Bill Hicks.

Is The Empire Strikes Back a concept album about race, England, and Star Wars, or did the band just find something unwholesomely amusing about the juxtaposition of fascism and Industrial Light and Magic? Via fax, all five members answer "Definitely."

***Hailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Davila 666 is one of the biggest rock 'n' roll attractions in the country. Over the past two years, they have amassed a large local following and their shows have a reputation as must-see spectaculars. A Davila 666 set functions almost like a theatrical event, as the band presents a thematic environment in which viewers are called to interact with props and exotic dancers. According to singer Carlitos, "Davila is a living homage to the sex, drugs, and good times of rock 'n' roll we all idolize." Their sound is the combination of obvious rock 'n' roll classics like the Stones, Stooges, Velvets, and Dolls, along with less likely influences such as Mazzy Star, Li'l Wayne, and Plan B. "We are like Menudo (the group-- not the soup) on lots of drugs," says Carlitos.

Davila 666, whose name combines references to a notorious Bayomon city slum with the number of the beast, recently toured the West Coast, where they made fans in every town they played and alliances with like-minded bands such as The Spits, Black Lips, and The King Khan & BBQ Show. All of their songs are sung in their native Spanish but that doesn't stop English-speaking audiences from dancing on tables and going crazy at their shows.

Davila 666 is smart, sarcastic, and aggressive-- as all young bands should be. Watch for their full US tour in Spring '09!

***Hot new Memphis-style barbecued soul coming at you by way of Toronto, Canada: meet The Deadly Snakes. In 1999, some youngsters invited Greg Oblivian, formerly of the Memphis garage/soul/punk band The Oblivians, to Canada to produce an album by their six-piece rock'n'roll band. They perfectly blend rock, punk and soul - they even have a horn section. Naturally, Greg was so taken with their music that he not only wanted to be their producer, but he wanted to be in the band. They completed the album, later released by Sympathy for the Record Industry, with Greg as producer and soon after hit the road with him in tow as their second guitarist/lead vocalist. Now they are seven.

Featuring all original material, I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore shows off the band's maverick musicianship and songwriting skills, and how could it not? With no fewer than three different lead vocalist/songwriters, influences run the gamut: Stax-style soul, Rolling Stones-style R&B raunch, the backwoods blues of Bob Dylan with The Band, the slinky growl of Van Morrison with Them, and loads of others.

Their live shows are testimonials to the power of rock and soul music. I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore sounds classic and timeless. This is rock'n'roll music performed as the Almighty commands.

Balancing frenetic, hand clapping, foot-stomping madness with plenty of swampy harmonica notes, vintage organ and a becoming drunken squalor, the Deadly Snakes give a warm welcome to rock'n'roll from the '60s...These Deadly Snakes rely on raw, mid-tempo numbers to shoulder their gritty and soulful call-and-response...Reminiscent of an inebriated, confused Neil Young, André St. Clair's vocals...lurch coolly from verse to verse with a demeanor that's unmistakably carefree, yet carefully crafted for a perfect fit that sounds like a gospel church choir gone haywire. Simple enough for the hoi polloi to sink their teeth into, yet still cool enough to satiate the planet's garage rockers.

***From the word go, Toronto's Deadly Snakes were a big band. While most high-school rock aspirations begin with groups of friends playing in trusty three- or four-piece lineups, the Snakes got off the ground as a six-piece ensemble. Kid rockers with a horn section, for Christ's sake. Start young with that kind of firepower at your disposal, stick with it six long years-- practicing, playing out, and digging deep into the Rolling Stones, electric Bob Dylan, early Van Morrison and the entire canon of soul music-- and, yeah, you do earn the word "deadly" in your name. The 'Snakes now have a well earned reputation as one of the most soul-shaking live acts on the circuit today.

Ode To Joy is The Deadly Snakes' third album and it's their finest moment to date, even hotter than their first two albums. It refines their attack with galloping rhythms, weeping turns to gospel, and the horn section leans into New Orleans funk. These guys have got a Memphis soul-gone-punk rock sound nnnnnnailed. Not bad for a bunch of white guys in their early '20s from Canada.

***Heavily influenced by 1960s r'n'b and rock'n'roll, The Deadly Snakes have an in-depth knowledge of music from that golden era, yet cast off any notions of mere reproduction. The band released their first album, Love Undone, in 1999, followed by I'm Not Your Soldier Anymore in 2001 and the critically acclaimed Ode to Joy in 2003.

Confidence and genuine talent ooze from the grooves of Porcella and, despite an energetic and revamped sound, the group never strays far from its rock or soul roots. Guided by competent hands, toy pianos, mellotrons, organs, horns, strings and percussion are fashioned into good, new-fashioned rock'n'roll-- at times soft, thoughtful and heart-wrenchingly passionate, at times fast, furious and unquestionably fearless.

Porcella is one of those rare albums that has depth without bottom, no limits and certainly no place for conformity. Respecting the roots of the music they create and reflecting those elements in their own work results in a dazzling palimpsest effect. ***Hailing from Montreal, The Demon's Claws emerged from a healthy rock'n'roll scene that also gave the world the King Khan & BBQ Show, Les Sexareenos, The Sunday Sinners and a multitude of other like minded roots rock deconstructionists.

The group was brought to the attention of In The Red by The Black Lips, who proclaimed, "The Demon's Claws are the best band we've seen on tour in the last year," an opinion to be taken very seriously, as The Black Lips are on tour about 300 days a year and know their rock'n'roll better than most. The Canadians were signed immediately followingtheir first ever LA show. Part Gun Club, part Back From The Grave, part lo-fi distorted crunch, part young Mick Jagger with a mouth full of pills, they play with an "aw, fuggit" swagger, falling all over the beat then pulling it together before anyone gets hurt. Like flooring a V8 down a back road, they let the gravel fly but somehow always avoid the ditch. Inside this shiny gem you'll find glimpses of deserts and rattlesnakes, bits of blood and guts, some love and jerkin' off and even a couple of honest-to-god country songs.

***The third and most cohesive album to date by Detroit's Dirtbombs guarantees to get the party started. Thirteen ass-shaking rock'n'roll originals from Mick Collins (former Gories front man), Jim Diamond (legendary Detroit producer) and the gang. Following their breakthrough Ultraglide In Black album and nearly two years of solid global touring, Dangerous Magical Noise proves that this band will most definitely survive the current Detroit/Garage press hype. Fuzztone punkers, R&B stompers, soul ballads, and more than a couple of nods to '70s glam rock are all here. Tight, right and outta sight.

***In the nearly ten years The Dirtbombs have existed, a lot of bass players have come and gone, a lot of touring has been logged, and a lot of singles released. Because anybody who gets in touch with Mick Collins and can cough up a small fee for studio time can release a Dirtbombs single, some of the Dirtbombs' very best tracks have seen the light of day only on seven inches pressed in small quantities (often released in foreign countries) that go out of print almost immediately. Hell, some singles were given to labels that never actually released the damn things.

This 52-song double-CD collects Dirtbombs singles sides and comp tracks-- including eight brand new songs and several previously unreleased older recordings, all re-mastered. A handsome 24-page booklet of photos and notes by the band augments this massive package.

***Talent is an asset and Detroit's Dirtbombs surely have it. To accompany their new album, We Have You Surrounded, is this brand new 7-inch single on which the band pays homage to label-mates (and one of their favorite bands) Sparks. Side A is "Sherlock Holmes" (a cut also featured on the new album) which was originally released on Sparks' Angst In My Pants. Side B, available exclusively on this single, is "Nothing To Do," a song originally released on the 1975 Big Beat LP.

This single comes in a handsome color picture sleeve, which also pays tribute to Sparks' record covers.

***Mick Collins and his merry band of Dirtbombs (which, this time around, features Bantam Rooster's Tom Potter and Detroit studio wiz Jim Diamond) bring the soul on their sophomore album Ultraglide In Black, named after Ultraglide in Blue, a cool late-nite flick from your youth. All the influences that helped shaped his sonic psyche are in the forefront here - Sly & the Family Stone, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Parliament, the Miracles and host of others too obscure to mention all have their presence felt. If the Temptations owned fuzz pedals and read too many comic books they might've sounded something like this. There are a lot of young bands claiming to be creating "soul" music and "testifying" (we won't name names) but this here is the authentic item - accept no substitutes.

The Dirtbombs' combination of squealing feedback-driven guitar, dual drumming and walloping bass presence rivals that of the Velvet Underground. Imagine the Velvets, Gories and Oblivians battling to the death inside a tuna fish can, their raw and ultra crude instrumentation blazing away with hell-bent fury. Led by Mick Collins (who spent time fronting the Gories and the rockabilly grunge outfit Blacktop), the Dirtbombs' distinctive Motown howl and wicked axe slingin' escapades shred like one of Dolemite's rapid-fire, X-rated monologues... Collins executes some snarling, self-professed "cyclone" guitar riffs underneath the stomping, mummified mayhem. These Detroit cavemen have found their place in a fuzz-drenched, garage band sound reminiscent of Question Mark and the Mysterians fused with the sonic annihilation of the Stooges. -Tucson Weekly

***The Dirtbombs' fourth full-length is jam-packed with more of their soulful, Detroit-style, fuzztone-fueled garage-punk-pop-rock 'n' roll that has made them a popular favorite with club-goers around the globe. Mick Collins and his merry band of miscreants' twelve slices of sonic thud kick the party into high gear and show off a vast array of unexpected influences. In fact, the opening track has been acknowledged by Collins as his tribute to Mark E. Smith and The Fall.

The Dirtbombs are as known for their tasteful selection of cover tunes as much their stunning originals, and this record carries on the tradition with fantastic takes on songs by comic artist Alan Moore, Portland, Oregon stalwarts Dead Moon, and labelmates Sparks. That said, the originals here are what you really want to write home about. From the Stooge-oid "Ever Lovin' Man" to the finger-poppin' "Indivisible" to the extendo free-form psych jam of "Race To The Bottom" to the Euro-pop of "La Fin Du Monde," The Dirtbombs prove once again they are a rock 'n' roll force to be reckoned with who will have no problem outliving the NME-sponsored hype of their hometown way after ten more trends and haircuts have been built up and torn down.

***Named after a legendary plantation located still off Highway 61 in the lower Delta, the Panther Burns began their art actions around 1979 in a Memphis cotton loft, grew through the 1990s to a home in Vienna (and in Paris, where their tango performance attracted international notoriety). With the brilliant Panther Phobia they have returned to the mythic Memphis garage of their origins.

Recorded and mixed in Memphis by Messrs. Jeffrey Evans (former Gibson Brother and the talent behind the '68 Comeback) and Doug Easley (producer and host to the stars at his studio, Easley Recording - 901-323-5407 if you don't believe it), Panther Phobia heralds a return to the tumultuous and exuberant tones and groans of the Panther Burns' landmark first LP Behind The Magnolia Curtain. The music is organic, like a landlord's eviction squad. Drums pound like irate neighbors at the door. Slow songs snake like a chick passing out on 'ludes. You will lock your doors when you hear this record, you will bar your windows, blood will flow from your nose, your lungs will itch. You will get a divorce, a speeding ticket, eleven twenty nine in the workhouse.

***From outta Dallas, Texas, comes this new psycho four-piece ready to rip you a new aural a-hole. They swiped their name from a berserk novel by Harry Crews and match the insanity of that book with grimy ass-shakin' swagger, spats of slide guitar, and the odd pained outburst of screaming distortion. Think the noisiest and most overwrought moments from Birthday Party, The Scientists and Black Flag. Alex Cuervo's name should be familiar to In The Red aficionados; he was in Blacktop and the King Sound Quartet, and is currently in the Gospel Swingers and Now Time Delegation. James Arthur was in Fireworks and the Necessary Evils. Together in Feast of Snakes they've found a means to channel what is, apparently, their abundant supply of angst and rage. They've already released one vinyl seven-inch EP in Australia (long out of print), which they're following up with this limited edition, 8-song vinyl-only pressing on In The Red. Watch for the band's west coast tour in May 2003.

They're young (average age: 21); they're abrasive (extremely); they're angry (in a cow-tipping, trenchcoat mafia kinda way); they're nasty, raw and hate-driven as it gets (every coupla months at In The Red); they approximate Pussy Galore, Empress Carolyn's favorite band of all-time the Oblivians, and Doo Rag (having a battle royale inside a cement mixer - one of them big ones, you know the kind that take up the whole damn street?).

***Back in 2000 three 20-year-olds belched up one extremely raw debut recording: in your face, out of tune, overblown, 100% pure raunch that you could actually dance to... kind of. They toured the States and Europe to wild acclaim for their explosive live performances. The Horrors are now finally ready to drop their second album; this time they traveled to Memphis, and enlisted Greg Cartwright (formerly of The Oblivians, currently with Reigning Sound) to produce at the legendary Easley Studios. The results are what could be called a quantum leap for the band; some of the words are actually understandable this time. The boys still lay down quite a filthy blend of country blues, rockabilly and retardo garage punk, but this time the results are much more cohesive and, well, danceable. Kind of. This is a sincere and honest attempt by The Horrors to create rock'n'roll along the lines of the bands they worship-- The Rolling Stones, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Howlin' Wolf. The end results, however, earn them a rightful place along side the likes of The Gories and The Oblivians in the scuzz blues hall of fame. This remarkable guitar-and-drums duo assault their instruments and audience in a way that could be described conservatively as wildly aggressive and frantically crazed, deliberately harsh and unapologetically brutal. Drummer / vocalist Adam Stonehouse attacks his kit in a style that has to be seen to be believed (any description would only trivialize it), all the while screaming as if he were passing kidney stones. Guitarist Roddy thrashes away with kinetic and spastic riffs that would make Greg Ginn proud. Influenced by the likes of Flipper, The Scientists, Electric Eels, Japanese noise bands, power tools and pro wrestling, the "music" of The Hospitals is not for the squeamish or feint of heart or eardrum. Human Eye has rotated more heads than an exorcism televised during half-time at the Super Bowl. Vulgar calls what Human Eye does alien punk, though it is primitive enough to recall the basic blues boogie of The Gories or The Bassholes colliding with Throbbing Gristle or Chrome. You know, earthy but art-damaged.

The quartet recorded the twelve tunes for their debut with Ryan Sabatis of the Piranhas in his basement studio over the course of several months (though it could have been done quicker had the drummer not been jailed for burgling audio-visual equipment from a school). Only in Detroit does one find musicians of this caliber. Figures it was the drummer.

***The Hunches are Portland's finest purveyors of cacophonous garage, delivering ragged-edged rock 'n' roll with such devastating hidden melody, one is left wondering how the band crammed such pop into the noise cavalcades. Having released two previous full-lengths, The Hunches are back with Exit Dreams, their third (and possibly final) album that captures their fiery live form on wax once more.

It's a veritable melee of vicious guitar savagery and lo-fi freak-out fugginess, the perfect follow-up to Hobo Sunrise--a raging riot of an album that leaves ringing ears, bloody mouths, and shot-to-shit synapses sizzling with amplified excess.

Not that Exit Dreams is a one-dimensional thrill. There's much more to The Hunches than simple shock bombast. Over the course of twelve tracks, the outfit navigates styles known to explorers of under-the-radar rock, each time twisting the tried-and-true into forms best-fitting their singular focus. This is Birthday Party hijacking Big Star's 3rd and juicing adrenaline into their eyeballs; it's the give-a-fuck Velvets getting loose and pissing off the neighbors while The Wipers chuck stones at their windows; it's the top-up for the tinnitus that only just wore off some four years after the last time The Hunches rode through this town.

The Hunches might be departing us, but the four-piece are leaving with a bang sure to raze these walls to the ground. It's time to set fire to everything and dance inside the encircling flames, facing fate with a wicked grin.

***A teaser EP to the August '04 Hobo Sunrise album from Portland, Oregon's hate-spewing rock'n'roll speaker splatterers the HUNCHES. The album track, "Fuck Disco Beats," is the band's response to the current crop of groups that think Gang of Four is a genre, while the two exclusive cuts, "When I Became You" and "Jakob's Voices," drive the loud and abrasive factor to new heights. ***Loud, noisy, aggressive rock n' rollothis is what THE HUNCHES are all about, and they deliver it in spades. Hailing from Portland, Oregan and averaging 21 years of age, The Hunches have knowledge of rock n' roll's heritage that betrays their youth. They draw on all the classic influences one would expect from any great rock n' roll band (Stones, Saints, Captain Beefheart, New York Dolls, Stooges, Cramps, '60s punk, '70s punk, blues, etc.) and manhandle it with an irreverent abrasiveness. A lot of bands are claiming similar influences, but The Hunches sound is totally their own. Pure nastiness filtered through rock n' roll romanticism. Just check out "Got Some Hate" for a dose of unadulterated punk rock bile. Their live shows are the things of legendothey tear shit up with reckless abandon. This is raw rock bliss. ***Bigger, badder and better than The Hunches' debut, Hobo Sunrise has monstrous fuzzball guitar explosions, overwrought screaming, poppy melody and a couple songs that are almost pretty. Shades of The Birthday Party, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pussy Galore, The Velvet Underground and The Pixies can all be detected here, but the sound and presentation is completely original. This fourteen-song monolith is certain to be a standout rock moment in 2004.

The Hunches exploded onto the Portland, Oregon music scene in 2002 with Yes. No. Shut It., a debut album that can best be described as "crazy." Byron Coley wrote in Mojo, "This album is very goddamn good ....[E]very time I play it I wanna bust something up." It's wild, noisy, extreme and, at times, melodic. The album and the tours that followed both in the U.S. and Europe quickly earned The Hunches a reputation as a force to be reckoned with. Hobo Sunrise is preceded by a three-track seven-inch single titled "Fuck Disco Beats" (ITR112) -- a message from The Hunches to all the bands who seem to think Gang Of Four is a genre.

***If musicians painted images with their instruments, The Intelligence's soundscapes would be set in a grainy, ash-gray world, among piles of scrap metal and busted machinery, with discarded computer parts blinking in cobwebbed corners and factories belching out toxins at irregular intervals. It'd be a black-and-white wasteland of humanity, a post-apocalyptic industrial revolution, warmed only by the distant loops of a delayed, disembodied guitar riff. At the center of it all would be Lars Finberg, delivering deadpan lines like "Going out with you is like going out with a cop." He'd be pounding bent garbage-can lids with one hand and programming distorted beats on his keyboard with the other, a one-man laboratory of intoxicating post-punk experimentation.

The music is so jagged and cinematically poetic and dusted in clouds of lo-fi noise that listening to it at different times can conjure completely different visions. It's par for the course for Finberg, who has participated in some of Seattle's most exciting musical forces such as the A-Frames and The Dipers.

The Intelligence are demanding attention in and beyond the Northwest, creating a new direction in sound based on the fundamental elements of bands like The Fall and PiL, yet beneath the post-punk clang lies a serious pop sensibility.

These pop chops have never been more noticeable than on Deuteronomy, the band's third full-length. Finberg swears that The Zombies' Odyssey and Oracle as well as early Bee Gees albums influenced his direction, though it sounds like Here Come The Warm Jets might've had a hand in it as well. Finberg also chose, for the first time, to forego the home recording approach he's used in the past and employed the use of Mike McHugh and his Distillery recording studio to get the most full-bodied, fully realized Intelligence recording to date.

***Fake Surfers, the fourth album by Seattle's prolific and sacred Intelligence, is destined to change your whole outlook on "pop" music. As with 2007's Deuteronomy, The Intelligence has employed In The Red house producer Mike McHugh at the Distillery to hone their edge to its sharpest yet. The possibility of an industrial/pop music crossover seems as unlikely as a black metal/country conglomeration, but on this new album, The Intelligence introduces a whole new spectrum of sonic awareness cleverly buried under little piles of dirt, with glimmering specks of brilliance poking through.

Lars Finberg, who performs here as The Intelligence, makes experimental post-punk rock weighted down by paranoia. As the bolts-and-bolts drummer of A-Frames, he builds songs off goose-stepping beats and coded lyrics. The Intelligence can't help but swing a little, however-- the singing hints at emotion, as stilted phrasing sometimes becomes a howl. It never breaks a sweat, but these songs are like pop that has been wiretapped, shocked, and muzzled, whereas the A-Frames are a robot's guess at how rock music sounds.

The Intelligence has faint whiffs of Swell Maps, Tronics, and Wire's Chairs Missing, though Fake Surfers is more relaxed and evenly paced than any previous releases. The sole cover on the album, "Pony People" by LA's Wounded Lion, has been stripped down to an acoustic pop ditty. This is by far the best Intelligence release yet...until the next one.

***Seattle, Washington's Lars Finberg is unstoppable and responsible for some of the best music blasting out of the underground at the moment. Lars structures the A-Frames' post-apocalyptic pop world where he handles drum duties. Then there's the diabolical Dipers, where he throws down that lo-fi noisy rumble of burning trash and car-wreck rock wiping the shit blood all over your blue suede shoes. But his main vehicle, The Intelligence, combines the best of all worlds in a wonderland of sonic horizons, poppy dance field rock, and if ya have time to think, brilliant lyrics. Intelligence utilize melodic acoustic guitars with wire-cutting electric riffs, crushed keyboards, jumping jack fun drums and singalong vocal melodies. The recording sounds like they crawl inside a beat-up trashcan to bang out the hits while tumbling down a granite mountain covered in volcanic ash.

Their debut album, Boredom and Terror, was first released on CD by Omnibus Records and later on LP by Narnack. It featured thirteen perfectly crafted songs that were created by Lars on his home recording unit. Icky Baby, their much anticipated follow up, was recorded with a full band on selected tracks and mixed in with Finberg's usual demented home recordings. The result is a much more aggressive Intelligence than heard previously-- a sound much closer to the band's live performances than their debut album. Be prepared to have your mind blown!

  • Brainchild of art-punk insurgent Lars Finberg (A-Frames, Dipers)

***The legendary Kid Congo Powers returns to the psychedelic jungle with a stripped-down, no-frills set of volcanic songs. The premier voodoo guitarist for seminal sexy, swampy bands like Gun Club, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and The Cramps, Powers is a restless aesthete whose earlier solo efforts explored and mixed genres. With Dracula Boots, he comes back to his roots as a crackerjack guitarist playing the primitive music that inspired him-- the raw sounds of garage and early Chicano rock.

It only makes sense to record such glittering gems as Thee Midniters' "I Found a Peanut" and Bo Diddley's "Funky Fly" in a high school gymnasium. The sessions took place in a Midwest town called Harveyville with his nefarious Pink Monkey Birds. Bassist Kiki Solis (El Paso, TX) and drummer Ron Miller (Macon, GA) provide the Southern soul sauce needed to fuel the engine of the rhythm train. Recording on a stage with an old PA system created a natural reverb, summoning the magic of a bygone prom interrupted by a juvenile delinquent rumble.

The original songs on Dracula Boots go from loud, fuzzy biker rock ("Hitchhiking") to a greasy rump-shaker groove ("Bobo Boogie"); from a scary movie soundtrack ("La Llarona") to The Meters having an acid flashback ("Black Santa").

So sink your teeth into this hunk of wax and waste no time strapping on your Dracula Boots. You will dance your way from the cradle to the grave, and beyond.

***Take a minute to think about the state of your existence right now. Everything okay? Complete garbage? Or maybe it's a confusing mess that maybe someday you expect to truly fathom. Whatever you got going, kiss it good-bye. For better or worse, you will soon be able to divide your life in half - a time before you heard the King Brothers, and after. Oh, it's gonna be different. Fucking different. Count on it.

Hailing from Japan and barely out of high school - as if any of us are any different - the King Brothers have already started setting rock'n'roll music and anything else in their path on fire. With releases on a major label in Japan and on Bulb in the United States, this-two-guitars-and-drums trio's In The Red debut crams punk rock, blues and noise into a meat grinder and smears what comes out with lots of nasty screaming. Harsh, wild and in your face - hell, yes - and deliciously mightay, mightay.

See them before they all have heart attacks.
    -Firestarter Magazine, Japan

Definitely the best band in the world.
    -Eric Oblivian, The Oblivians

Few live acts make me drop my beer... I lost my Schlitz when I raised my hands in glee at the coccyx-crunching, psycho-blues racket produced by these three polite maniacs from Nishinomiya City, Japan. As I walked in, guitarist Masafumi Koyama and guitarist/vocalist Keizo Matsuo physically threatened the crowd with their equipment. Meanwhile, drummer Jun Fujimoto, who sports hair Don King would envy, and with more bounce, smashed his little kit like he was apt to strangle small animals for the hell of it... King Brothers deliver...ear-splitting death boogie with the added delight of track titles shouted as songs begin. Did I mention that all lyrics are in Japanese? Did I mention that Koyama is also credited with "scream," because on every song he lets loose with blood-curdling, wordless shrieks? I love this shit. It makes me want to throw cinderblocks off my roof. If they want it, King Brothers can have my soul.
    -Andy Fenwick, Oculus

    • Young, wild, Japanese, on In The Red - like we gotta drive you to soccer practice on this one
    • The industrious Bulb label has done most of the hard work on this one; with a tour, word-of-mouth, and zines rolling over and playing dead, this band is destined for fame and debauchery
    • They're big in Japan

***In Montreal, Canada, Black Snake and Mark Sultan played in the underground punk-garage band The Spaceshits. Following that band's demise, Sultan banged drums for Canadian garage rock legends Les Sexareenos. Black Snake transformed into King Khan and relocated to Hamburg, Germany to become the Maharaja of '60s super-soul with his band The Shrines. After the Sexareenos split, Sultan traveled the world with his guitar, serenading Brazilians, Laotians, Americans, and the French with his one-man band BBQ. One day a light bulb went off in their heads and they decided to join forces-- The King Khan & BBQ Show was born. They released their debut album, recorded by DM Bob in Hamburg, on Goner Records in 2005. The record was deleted soon thereafter.

In The Red presents this long-overdue re-release of this classic in a newly expanded package. There are two bonus tracks not originally available on the Goner release, brand new artwork, and the LP version features a one-sided second disc containing the band's first demo. This is a must for any fan of real rock 'n' roll music. Take off your pants and dance.

"This is what it's all about; swinging music by eccentrics with an ear for a tune... the pair's raw attempts at doo wop are simply sublime."

***"Now, I could tell you about BBQ (aka Mark Sultan), his past in bands like Les Sexareenos or The Spaceshits or his solo records on labels like Bomp. I could tell you about King Khan's pseudo-celebrity in Europe, or his past in The Spaceshits, or how his band, The Shrines, are a ten-piece soul-funk revue that have been described as the tightest band in the world. But these names and facts probably mean nothing to you, so let's talk about the real nitty gritty: The King Khan & BBQ Show.

"First, I must say that these guys are fuckin' blood brothers. Real tight. They played all over the place in an aforementioned band outta Montreal and they're the best of friends to this very day. When Khan settled in the land of kraut and honey, the two maintained they'd reunite some day and lay waste to this miserable world.

"And so it began. In 2002 they jammed in Khan's Nazi-bunker rehearsal space and the black magick remained intact. Songs flowed like blood from a cancerous abscess. They took it slow, honing their craft, playing sporadically around Germany and Spain to crowds outraged by their incredible sound and orgiastic, anarchic live show.

"Two guys. One smashing a snare, bass drum and tambourine with his bare feet, molesting his guitar and singing like a possessed angel. The other spinning and howling like a freak and belting it out on his guitar like a savage. What does it all sound like? It sounds like five men. People name typical suspects when trying to describe them: The Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, Black Flag, The Falcons, Sam Cooke, The Sonics.... It's all true, and more. The show? A mess. Love songs, punkers, improvised riot-starters, dance-floor shakers, sing-along stompers, wild rockers, you name it. They always drench the crowd in raw energy, and they're always the last ones dancing."

***In 1999 Jerry Teel (Honeymoon Killers, Chrome Cranks), Kid Congo Powers (The Cramps, Gun Club, Nick Cave's Bad Seeds), Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore), Jack Martin (Little Porkchop) and Barry London came together and recorded and released their self-titled debut album. The Knoxville Girls lay down a raw blend of country/western, soul, rockabilly and blues as interpreted by their collective Lower East Side psyche.

They've been described as "no wave country" and "a cross between Charlie Feathers and the Velvet Underground." They've toured extensively in the US and Europe to enthusiastic response. Bigger, louder and grittier than their debut, In A Paper Suit is an absolute rock'n'roll masterpiece. The Rolling Stones would pay good money to call this album their own.

***The self-titled debut by Knoxville Girls (Jerry Teel, Kid Congo Powers, Bob Bert, Jack Martin and Barry London) was a soul-stirrer. It was countrified. It was a rock'n'roll testimonial. It has continued to sell since its release in September '99. It was described as Charlie Feathers backed by the Velvet Underground. To say that In the Woodshed, a live document, leans toward the latter would be a gross understatement. Recorded this past year at Maxwell's, this ultra-crude live album captures all the atonal noise and sonic drone of their live shows. Several songs not featured on their In The Red debut appear here, including a rendition of the Shangri-La's "Sophisticated Boom Boom" sung by Kid Congo that'll drop your ass out of a cropduster bi-plane onto a hay bale. Packaged to look like an old Stones or Dylan bootleg - to match the sound quality - In the Woodshed comes in a white, hand-stamped jacket with a paper insert. Ah, the good ol' days...

***Beyond the great strengths of drummer Bob Bert, singer/guitarist Jerry Teel, guitarist Kid Congo Powers, guitarist Jack Martin and organist Barry London's pedigrees and disparate influences, The Knoxville Girls is an entity far outweighing the sum of its parts. Yet another spontaneous re-creation of rock'n'roll written and recorded with a no-frills, workmanlike approach at New York City's famed Funhouse Studio, the album is an intuitively immediate debut release. Having been compared to "Charlie Feathers as backed by the Velvet Underground," Knoxville Girls also bring to mind the thin, wild mercury sound of Newport-era Dylan or music that could be described as "country no wave." Knoxville Girls is a travelogue of American musical styles, a gap-toothed jukebox floating in the grimy Hudson River, spilling into the muddy Mississippi and out into the Gulf of Mexico. A timely and yet timeless collection of songs.

With the interplay of three guitars careening into each other like subway trains derailed, a truncheon-like backbeat and a layer of Farfisa, harmonica and sax flying around like New York trash and autumn leaves, The Knoxville Girls is an album anyone would hope to have wash up on his or her shore.

This is mongoloid frenzy music. Are they paranoid, frustrated, or merely disgusted with humanity? The truth is usually somewhere in the middle. When a band has a dash of Necessary Evils, a dollop of Karate Party, and a fairly heaping mound of their own chemical blend, we should always be available. The trio's debut LP had primitive, cavernous aggression that pounded asses into submission, while their released follow-up shows a very nice progression. ***It is with pride that In The Red announces the debut release from Los Angeles-based Lamps. This ten-song vinyl-only debut takes awkward discomfort and good times to new lows. L.A.'s answer to a stupid question, Lamps bring a new definition to the term "power trio," while rewriting the book on "Fuck Everything." There's something of genuine fright, intimidation, and confusion when three completely unassuming, painfully normal-looking young men get on stage and the first thing out of singer Montgomery Buckles trap is, "The next time I see you, I'm gonna push you down the stairs," sung the only way he can-- like the most abused, agitated, salivating pitbull behind chainlink that's ever made your stomach drop. He is angry for too many reasons to name, but you can find one of them in the form of bassist Tim, who does everything in his power to subvert all seriousness by way of extreme clown-like antics of a certain homosexual mental illness, while drummer Josh keeps the best primitive, metronome beat since Nick Knox. This all culminates in some of the best anti-wanking, anti-poetic, anti-anything that'll be taken away from us by the same people who beat us up in high school, irresponsibly mean and ugly music for those of us who are through with trying to be cool cuz tomorrow's gonna suck, regardless.

***After previous achievements with Volt, The Splash Four, The No-Talents, and her past collection of home tapes, Lili Z. comes back with fifteen new 8-track cassette living room recordings.

Twisted into shapes that vaguely resemble seam-bursting garage punk, the songs' (thirteen originals and reworkings with Lili Z. lyrics of a Bela Bartok piece and an old Rondos chestnut) charm lies in their unpredictability. Sometimes it's a little late-'70s punk rock, sometimes it's catchy, metronome-like electropunk, sometimes it's pure guitar noise freakouts, and sometimes it's experimental tooling around. B.ut most of all, it's pure Lili Z., recorded at home at her most intimate.

A sort of musical diary, The Two of Us comes with a stunning, full-color gatefold sleeve of Lili's collages and meticulous illustrations for each song. This vinyl edition is limited to 1000.

"Dark-sounding but maintaining a ... playful energy, blazingly fast at times yet with plenty of ... slow-simmer brooding and crawling. Lili's made a better sounding record in her home than most full bands could hope to achieve in a studio."
    --Terminal Boredom

"Lili knocks out fifteen new tracks of sophisticated raw minimalism, carefully balancing menacing rip-saw guitar and pulverizing drum machine crashes with intricate songs that have clearly forged a permanent spot for the most revered female force in punk."

***For the past six years Tim Kerr and the Lord High Fixers kicked up one of the craziest rackets to ever come out of Texas. Fronted by Mike Carroll, who had previously led Poison 13 along with Kerr (Now Time Delegation, King Sound Quartet, Big Boys Jack O'Fire), the Lord High Fixers made music drawing on influences from all over the musical map. Garage, punk, blues, free jazz, beat poetry and hip hop elements all found their way into the 'Fixers topography. Their rare live performances were the stuff of legend - chaos reigned supreme, with band members falling into each other, instruments getting unplugged and broken, bones, cartilage and skin all enduring more than their fair share of abuse.

A band like this could only exist for so long before burning out, and The Beginning of the End is the final statement by this ambitious band, who are certainly exiting on a high note. Tim Kerr's guitar duets with free jazz saxophonist Ken Vandermark here are unlike anything else on a garage rock record. Even the straight garage rock is exceptional; why else would Byron Coley have bothered to write the band's liner notes / epitaph?

***Memphis, Tennessee's Lost Sounds' fourth full length in as many years-- their first for In The Red-- is by far their most infectious and catchy to date. Their demented, aggressive approach is still intact, but never so perfectly presented and crafted as it is here. Not one song from Future Touch (released July 2004) is carried over, though that EP is still hot-hot-hot on the lips and ears of synth-punk maniacs everywhere.

This Lost Sounds full length is therefore 100% worth your time; succinct song structure and band's bottomless well-style access to fucking unbelievable hooks don't hurt either. Take a track like "And You Dance," for example: You're, like, "oh, I like that keyboard part, and, oh, I can't believe that it went into that next part even though it sounds so perfect that I must've heard it before somewhere else." But you didn't. You heard it now, for the first time. A band that can pull off that weird déjá vu illusion with their songs has gotta command awe, and you gotta stop doubting it when you hear it, that a band couldn't have come up with catchy intensity this original. A band like the Lost Sounds could have, though, and does.

Dan Melchior is best known for his collaborations with Holly Go Lightly and Billy Childish, having done a number of full length albums with them. Dan is also responsible for quite a few solo releases of stripped-down country blues on the Damaged Goods label. About a year ago Dan relocated to New York City where he decided to take his blues-inspired musical ideas in a more electrified and noisy direction. The Broke Revue is the result of this new direction.

***Anything even remotely blues-influenced was thought to be pretty much beyond the pale until a short while ago. Dan Melchior has been playing his own twisted and driving take on barebones rock'n'roll for several years now, making appearances on over 20 commercially released recordings while constantly honing his own lyrical attack and idiosyncratic way with a tune.

Influences as disparate as Creedence, The Fall, and William Blake blend seamlessly, especially in his most fully realized work to date, Bitterness, Spite, Rage and Scorn, the second album on In The Red Records by Melchior and the Broke Revue. With Bruno Meyrick Jones on guitar, Brad Truax on bass, and Greg Anderson on drums holding a rock-steady yet fluid groove behind him, Melchior holds forth with an uncompromising and extremely articulate vision and voice. The playing of the band is superb, disciplined yet funky. Longtime collaborator Jones really shines on this recording, while Truax and Anderson shift effortlessly from one muscular groove to another.

The engineering expertise and general sonic know-how of Mike McHugh helps the band push their sound into unexpected avenues, resulting in eclectic but cohesive album, delivered with the intensity and fire In The Red fans have every right to expect.

Like his buddy Wild Billy Childish, Dan Melchior plunders elderly American musical styles ... and then rams 'em back home to us as outpourings of some eccentric and curmudgeonly Brit weirdo who's sorta like an overamped Doc Boggs.... Melchior ... freely combine[s] second-hand Delta blues with .... grimy murder ballads from England and Appalachia, and update[s] them thru the Toe Rag studio school of crooked-teeth charm.... His voice sounds lots like Childish or mebbe like Ben from The Country Teasers, and the Broke Revue sounds like the Headcoats playing an all-request covers set at Junior Kimbrough's blues joint the night the place burned to the ground. -Jon Sarre, Lollipop

***Dan Melchior has collaborated with Billy Childish and Thee Headcoats and recorded and toured extensively with Holly Golightly of Thee Headcoatees. His solo releases draw from the work of maverick American folk musicians like Skip James, Fred McDowell, Dock Boggs and Robert Wilkins, while retaining a sense of adventure and passion lost in over reverent interpretations.

In his recent work with the Broke Revue - Greg Anderson, Bruno Meyrick-Jones, and B.L. Truax-- Melchior marries a love of country blues and R&B to a new sonic extreme, utilizing the misanthropic fury of '70s punk and the drive of classic '60s catalysts. Recorded at Jerry Teel's Funhouse studio in New York, this album ups the stakes, pushing Melchior's hard-driving minimalist approach into new places altogether. The result is vitriol-fueled rock 'n' roll with brains and big balls - or bollocks, if you will.

***Green Bay, Wisconsin's Mystery Girls were mere teenagers when they started out. Now in their early/mid-20s, the boys (er, Girls) have delivered their most cohesive work yet on their third album, Incontinopia. It's unclear what Incontinopia means but it's a good bet that copious amounts of marijuana smoke were involved in choosing it.

Recorded a couple years ago, Incontinopia has sat on the shelf while the band relocated and readjusted. Like a fine wine, Incontinopia has aged beautifully-- its sound is rich, full, and earthy. Adding a dose of psych weirdness to their patented garage-punk-R&B sound has resulted in the band's finest moment. Vocalist Casey Grajek's raw-throated vocals have never sounded more powerful and guitarists Jordan Davis and Mount Mathieu D'Congo's dueling solos harken back to the MC5 and Yardbirds. This is great stuff that sounds immediately classic.

Culled from several sessions and stacks of recording tape, Incontinopia was assembled by bassist/drummer Mike Zink, whose abstract approach to editing has given the album a weirdness that brings to mind Head-era Monkees colliding with Funhouse-era Stooges. Yep, Nesmith meets Asheton-- it's that good!

The Mystery Girls have laid low the past couple of years but upon the release of Incontinopia that will change. The band plans on a full US tour to be followed up by a swing through Western Europe. Be sure to catch them when they hit your town-- bands this good don't come around very often.

***There must be an explanation for at least ten outstanding new, young rock'n'roll bands all currently working their mojos in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Definitely at the head of the class, The Mystery Girls play sloppy, rambunctious, blues-infused... okay, let's just say it: they play garage rock. For a musical style that has been around for approximately forty years and attempted by every social reject who ever picked up a guitar, very few do it well. The Mystery Girls do it amazing. Something In The Water is a timeless blast that lays waste to the current crop championed by overseas porn rags such as NME. This is the real dope, daddy-- Midwestern kids, some still not old enough to drink legally, who have nothing better to do than get high and study the riffs and nuances of every '60s and '70s garage punk album ever recorded and try to master them. The Mystery Girls are so masterful it's almost scary. A lot of bands might claim to be inspired by the MC5 and Brian Jones-era Stones, but The Mystery Girls genuinely sound like a legitimate cross between the two. Their debut album on Trickknee Records in '03 was an instant classic.

Extensive touring of the US has earned a legion of young fans and proved them to be a real force in the world of underground rock. Something In The Water was recorded at the fashionable Ghetto Recorders in Detroit by the producer of the moment Jim Diamond.

***If you've followed the San Francisco underground for the past ten years, you might already be familiar with John Dwyer. Or-- tastes depending-- you might not know him at all. A friend and devotee of preeminent Providence noise rock act Lightning Bolt, the majority of Dwyer's repertoire falls on the indie spectrum's more visceral wavelengths. He was Pink in Pink and Brown, fronted Coachwhips, and played guitar in the dysfunctional Hospitals. If you're unfamiliar with or in search of a refresher, you can search YouTube for a crash course on any of these bands. Some popular tags are: "garage," "punk," and "sweat."

If you like what you see, do yourself a favor and check out Dwyer's newest band, Thee Oh Sees. "Newest" because they've only been around for six albums-- albeit in different incarnations, under several different names (OCS, the Oh Sees, et al.) with several different sounds. Formed in the wake of his more volatile commitments, Thee Oh Sees started as an extension of Dwyer's softer side. Their early recordings were somber and beautiful. Last year, Thee Oh Sees made an unexpected turn, delivering their wildest, weirdest, hardest-rocking record yet with The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending A Night In. Now Thee Oh Sees have followed it with an even wilder, more hard-rocking record, Help.

Recorded by Chris Woodhouse (the A-Frames, Mayyors), Help draws straight, dark lines to both the British psychedelic rock of bands like The Creation and the caveman thud of The Troggs while a Cramps-like appreciation for rockabilly lies not far below. The album weaves Dwyer's signature AM radio howl with the catchiest of driving tunes, Brigid Dawson's gorgeous harmonies, heightened fidelity, thick spring-reverbed bombast, mighty drums, and an undeniable pull. The result is a sound somewhere beyond nostalgia, beyond the garage, beyond the fireside song and supposed goo-rock. Modern rock 'n' roll records don't come much better than this and Thee Oh Sees are one of the best bands going.

***This hotly anticipated debut album from Detroit, Michigan's The Piranhas delivers on the promise of the band's two seven-inch singles and twelve-inch single released on the Tom Perkins and Rock n' Roll Blitzkrieg labels. These early releases have garnered rave reviews and helped land them on the cover of Maximum Rock'n'Roll. Their chaotic live shows have earned them a reputation as one of the few truly primal and dangerous bands around. Their music is a violent head-on collision between art-skronk abstraction and raw punk savagery. Like a mutant cross between Hearpen-era Pere Ubu and Damaged-era Black Flag, with a dose of mid-'70s Cleveland punk poured over the top for good measure. Yet they still sound like nothing else you've heard before.

The Piranhas fucking destroy. The Piranhas may be the best band of this era. Art damage punk that is so brutal and primordial that it's unbelievable. They make me want to pull my intestines out and chop on them! They make me want to drill through my own hand! I AM NOT FUCKING KIDDING!!! I totally lose my shit over these guys. If you haven't heard any of their shit you have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to modern punk. Fuck!!! Fuck!!! Shit!!! DESTROY YOURSELF!!! GET FUCKING PRIMAL!!! --Horizontal Action

***Detroit's Piranhas have carved quite a reputation for themselves in their short existence. Their live shows have been described as terrifying, confrontational, dangerous, offensive, intrusive and confusing amongst other things (all of it quite accurate). With live shows legendary for their violence and mayhem it has somehow been overlooked that the band is also responsible for some of the most original music going today. Punk? Prog? No Wave? It's all of these and none of them. Screaming vocals, frantic tempos, fractured song structures, left-field time changes, whirling carnival organ all executed with a demented sheen of pure art damage that would make The Residents proud. The Piranhas vinyl-only EP is presented with loads of pretension and no apologies o eight songs in exactly 23 minutes.

***After a year of solid touring the States and abroad, The Ponys deliver a sophomore album that more than lives up to their press and hype. Recorded with Steve Albini, Celebration Castle continues on the same course as The Ponys' debut-- elements of pop and punk styles of the'60s. '70s, '80s and '90s combined in a sound that's surprisingly non-retro and fresh. Celebration Castle promises to leave not a dry seat in the house.

These Chicagoans must have gotten As in history class. They sound like '80s UK post-punks trying to sound like '60s US garage rockers... But The Ponys turn that spacetime vertigo into a Farfisa-fueled, fuzz guitar fantasy camp --Spin

The Ponys come on primal and fierce, feeding time-tested riffs (think Velvets, Standells) into a cyclotron of fuzzy distortion. These white punks are dope. --Entertainment Weekly

***The music of The Ponys is so delicate when you warm up to it, and yet so destructive and mesmerizing, it's hard to see straight once it kicks in. It's tough to imagine the effect on an unsuspecting world it will have. The songs of this Chicago band challenge the DIY aesthetic to the point not everybody can do it themselves anymore. The timing, the vocal inflection, the tremendous build up and crashing-- it's an all-new playing field and it's pretty damn exciting. If psychedelic music is supposed to be drippy and lazy, then you can't compare this at all. "Pop" is also way too broad of a term to fit, but once you let these songs plug into your receptacles, it all becomes quite clear. "Noise" is just as unworthy of a description, but begins to tap into the fortified power that's ended so many live shows with a feedback-destroyed eardrum or two.

Somehow The Ponys cleverly destroy everything that you used to hate, and then force you to love it with such a unique, swirling sound and jaggedly perverse style that you're left in an orange haze of confusion, pleasure, and overwhelming satisfaction. Seriously. You know, the stuff Mick Jagger wanted to get his hands on so desperately. It really seems that songs like these haven't been written in a long time. Everything's been done before, right? Wrong. Jered's vocals may echo the desperation of Richard Hell, and those chilling keyboards may recall the perfect Velvet Underground, but it's in a modern league all its own. How something so seductively neurotic can be so therapeutic is hard to fathom, but just be glad to witness it. The Ponys change everything with just a few heartbreaking chords and there's nothing anyone can do about it but enjoy his or her new favorite band.

***Having founded seminal Memphis punk outfit The Reatards at the tender age of sixteen, Jay Reatard is a seasoned veteran of the garage-punk scene and he's barely twenty-six years old. In the '90s The Reatards turned the Memphis underground rock scene upside down with a legendary live show so over-the-top that they were banned in a number of European countries.

Never content to stick to one genre, one project or one band, Jay also co-leads the synth-punk Lost Sounds with Alicja Trout, plays drums for The Final Solutions, co-fronts The Angry Angles and runs his own label Shattered Records. He's developed such a dedicated following that even his dirty socks have sold on eBay!

In The Red is proud to announce the release of Blood Visions, Jay's first as a solo artist. Combining the aggressive approach of The Reatards with a melodic pop sensibility, and production recalling classic UK punk records -- The Adverts (who are covered here), Siouxsie & the Banshees, ATV, etc. -- Blood Visions is the most satisfying accomplishment of this young man's career thus far.

***It's been five years since Greg Cartwright's Reigning Sound dropped their last full-length studio album, Too Much Guitar. Not that Cartwright has been resting on his laurels. The Reigning Sound backed Shangri-La Mary Weiss on her critically acclaimed comeback album, Dangerous Game, which was produced and largely written by Cartwright. The band performed with Weiss on tour, including an appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Cartwright also produced, penned songs for, and played in The Detroit Cobras for a spell. All the while, the Reigning Sound toured the US on and off and released a couple of live albums, yet never managed to get into the studio to record. All the while, Cartwright stockpiled loads of new tunes.

Finally, late last year, the band entered Ardent Studios in Memphis and laid down a bunch of songs. Some months later, they went into Echo Mountain Studios in North Carolina and recorded a bunch more. In the end, the band had more than enough for two albums, and carefully whittled it down to the cream of the musical crop.

. Love and Curses (title comes from Memphis TV horror host Sivad) is a return to the sound and style of the Reigning Sound's incredible Time Bomb High School. The band once again features a full-time keyboardist, Dave Amels, and has jettisoned the lo-fi approach used on Too Much Guitar in favor of a bigger, warmer studio sound. As with Time Bomb High School, Love and Curses strikes a balance between soulful rockers and beautiful ballads. The results are a rock 'n' roll album as near to perfection as any one is likely to hear this year. Watch for the Reigning Sound on tour in the US and Europe this fall.

***The Reigning Sound hails from Memphis, Tennessee and is the latest group from Greg Cartwright - formerly known as Greg Oblivian of the Oblivians. In the Reigning Sound Greg has shed some of his previous outfit's lo-fi blues/punk leanings in favor of a sound that is more lowkey and sincere. On Time Bomb High School Greg sings soulful ballads, countrified dirges and somber songs of heartbreak and unrequited love - the man's heart is clearly on his sleeve. It's not all ballads, however, as the band also blasts out butt-shaking rockers that will please any fan of Greg's previous outfits. The Reigning Sound pays tribute to their Memphis musical heritage with absolutely stomping versions of The Counts' "Stormy Weather," The Guilloteens' "I Don't Believe," and "Brown Paper Sack" by The Gentrys (who featured WWF wrestling manager Jimmy "Mouth of the South" Hart). This is instantly classic Memphis rock'n'roll that ranks up there with the very best work of Alex Chilton.

With [Greg Cartwright's] new band, Reigning Sound ... the man who seemingly has the Midas touch continues to not only exceed lofty expectations but flat-out obliterate them. The sound and style of Reigning Sound ...is definitely not as angry as the Oblivians, nor is it as quirky as the Compulsive Gamblers. That's not to say there isn't a "darkness" to the music - it's just more melancholy than furious or sinister. Any "darkness" evident in these sounds is surprising, considering the cleanliness of the production. It's not what you'd expect but it couldn't be any other way. This is absolute perfection, just the way it is. The astonishing thing is that through ... tales of heartbreak and love lost, these songs still somehow project a spirit of hope. It's inexplicably wonderful. The songs exude such class it's almost like these guys were channeling the spirit of Roy Orbison.... Don't be fooled, though - this definitely isn't a one-man-show. The chemistry between these four musicians is nothing short of frightening. It's even more apparent when you see them play live. Reigning Sound is a machine.- Uncle Dan's House of Smut

***Few familiar modern garage rock'n'roll would find fault with the view that Greg Cartwright is one of the today's brightest talents. His singing and songwriting are second to none, as demonstrated in his previous bands The Oblivians and The Compulsive Gamblers. The Reigning Sound, his current vehicle, was born in Memphis, Tennessee, sired by a Flash & The Memphis Casuals 45 and nursed by a Barbara Pittman single. Childhood was not easy for this musical what-not. Kids shunned it for its rock'n'roll sensibility and obvious lack of polished shtick. In true stepchild fashion, though, the band continued to develop a unique sound all its own that didn't really focus on preconceived genres. Rock'n'roll, R&B, gospel, pop and soul all melt into their The Reigning Sound's distinctive Memphis sound.

Their debut album on Sympathy For The Record Industry demonstrated their talents for crafting great, moody soundscapes. Their second album, Timebomb High School on In The Red, captures their full spectrum, from rockers to ballads. On Too Much Guitar, Cartwright goes for the throat with their hardest edged, toughest recording to date. Half recorded at Memphis's famed Easley Studios and half recorded by Jay and Alicja of the Lost Sounds inside Cartwright's own Legba record store, the album is a powerhouse that at times recalls the garage punk energy of The Oblivians-- no doubt what a lot of his fans have been waiting for.

***The latest in a long, highly enjoyable series of fucked up punk rock action form the tweaked brain of Mick Collins (Gories, Blacktop, Dirtbombs, et. al.). Riding shotgun on Collins' newest rampage through the halls of sobriety and good manners are fellow window-smashing goons Terri Wahl (Red Aunts), Dan Brown (Royal Trux, '68 Comeback, Johnny Hash) and Marty Moore ('68 Comeback, Johnny Hash). Do people ransack and burn everything in sight just because? People do.

"Hate Filled Classics" is louder and more bombastic than Mickis usual-but-not-ordinary low-fidelity garage; apparent is Terri Wahlis ampheto-punk influence. Other ingredients in the Screws' thrashoholic blend are warped blues, sheet-metal- whacked industrial jungle rhythms, and some distorted blues guitar thatill pierce the cranium of any listener foolhardy enough to play this one without a helmet.

***Mick Collins and the Screws have toured the US and Japan since the release of their debut of two years ago. The Screws feature the guitar and vocal stylings of Terri Wahl (formerly of the Red Aunts) as well as a new rhythm section for their sophomore effort. This time around the Screws have shed some of their punk rock attack in favor of a more R'n'B/blues beat. While Terri and Mick's guitar assault remains pure no-wave psychosis, the tone is more juke joint than slam pit this time around. Ike Turner, John Lee Hooker and even techno giants Groove Armada get mangled by the Screws' treatment. Mick Collins says, "If you can't dance or fuck to it, then it ain't rock n' roll." Well, this is rock n' roll. Ladies and gentlemen, let's please recognize The Screws. [They] embody rock and roll at its most happily misanthropic. Their ... show at EJ's was a rowdy beer-spiller and their self-titled album on In the Red Records reeks of grime and poison. While the Screws' blend of lobotomized blues and fuzz-destroyed rock and roll certainly won't win a lot of crossover sales from members of the Celine Dion Fan Club, it's perfect for ... odes to transgression. -Willamette Week

"Yet another rip-roaring post-Gories outfit from Mick Collins, whose John Lee Hooker-meets-Crime take on scuzz-crash-and-burn guitar is yet another reason to not pull out the noose everytime Sugar Ray comes on TV." -WFMU

***From Perpignan, France comes the Sonic Chicken 4 with their long-awaited, self-titled debut album. After releasing a string of seven inches which have received glowing reviews in zines, webzines and blogs across the globe, and playing dates in Europe and the US, SC4 have agreed to let In The Red release their first full-length. The band plays a fuzzy, ultra-primitive brand of garage stomp that owes equally to '60s pop, The Velvet Underground, Back From The Grave comps, girl groups, and Jaques DuTronc.

This title will be released on vinyl LP only but will include a CD of the record inside so that buyers can still put it in their iTunes.

"Sonic Chicken 4 are the only band I was ever scared to follow."

***"Dick Around" is the first US single from Sparks' latest album Hello Young Lovers. The brothers Mael insisted from the get-go that the track was their choice for a single and In The Red are honoring their wishes, releasing a radio edit that pares down the seven-minute album version to a three-and-a-half-minute bombastic rocker.

"If the public were only allowed to hear one song from the new album," says Ron Mael, "I have no doubt that 'Dick Around' would be the one selected to best encapsulate the spirit and scope of our new work."

The track is featured on a seven-inch vinyl edition -- backed by a live version of "Hospitality On Parade" recorded May 20 at The Avalon in Hollywood -- and on CD accompanied by three different live tracks, an alternate version of "(Baby Baby) Can I Invade Your Country," an interview with Ron and Russell conducted by Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols and two videos. This is an absolute must-have for any Sparks fan.

***On their incomparable new album, Sparks protest predictability, obliterate the ordinary and demand utmost respect. Hello Young Lovers is cinematic, bold, and lyrically liberal, with moments of sheer beauty, dissonance and harmony. It may not win a Grammy, but an Oscar's not out of the question. Never, never, has there been an auditory assault of such magnitude presented in the realm of pop music.

When Sparks' last album Lil'Beethoven hit the streets critics lauded and applauded, fans smiled smugly with overdue vindication and fellow musicians wept when faced with the reality that, once again, Sparks had raised the bar by which all other albums should be judged.

Now the Angeleno brothers, Ron and Russell Mael present Hello Young Lovers, their twentieth album. To achieve such enormity and expansiveness they worked in a limitless vacuum for the best part of eighteen months. The only inspiration taken from any current music was the provocation to go as far as possible in the opposite direction. When writing and recording Lil' Beethoven, Sparks broke the rules, but in creating Hello Young Lovers the rule book has been thrown away. Once again, the Angelenos are joined by Tammy Glover on drums and guitarist Dean Menta with special guests Jim Wilson on guitar and Steve McDonald on bass. The resulting album is an extraordinary masterpiece.

The Blackout is the third album from New York City's Speedball Baby. Fifteen brand new originals of honed-to-near-perfection psycho-no-wave-rockabilly. Here Speedball Baby is joined by James Chance, Mick Collins (Dirtbombs and half the In The Red catalog), Cristina Martinez (Boss Hog) and Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion, Pussy Galore) to make this by far their finest effort to date. Like the Velvets, New York Dolls, Suicide and Contortions before them, Speedball Baby are truly the sound of New York City. Tales of pimps, players and hustlers, set to the background of jagged and fractured rhythms. Their music is dark and gritty. This music could have come from nowhere else.

Fusing the primordial slurp of rockabilly with a broken, homegrown hybrid of gospel testimony and punk mayhem, Speedball Baby cuts a swath through the rotting cane fields of contemporary music. Their shows have earned them the loyalty of music lovers and emergency room ghouls on both coasts and between. The notoriously fickle crowds in their home parish of NYC have stuck to Speedball Baby like feathers on a tarred heretic.

Martin works the traps like a cocktail forge, loading syncopated coal like the port town native he is. Ali curls around the beat with blunt grace, by measures a gamin then a pit boss. Together, they're more a twin barrel riot gun than a rhythm section. Matt wrestles fractured jabs of twang and slur from a singed encyclopedia of guitar don'ts. Ron flails, feints, and careens with the teethmarks of Burroughs biting Beefheart. He works the crowd like Lawrence Ferlinghetti hosting a game show or a midwife's blood-spattered husband. His antic destructive pageant has blanched unsuspecting soundmen and cold-cocked audiences.

***New Yorkis Speedball Baby combine the twang of rockabilly and the shout of gospel with a healthy injection of Lower East Side no wave dissonance. Talk about a touch oi class! Thereis more hysterical, horn-driven mayhem and psycho stream-of-consciousness on Uptight than a Las Vegas wedding reception. The only thing missing is an erotic ice sculpture.

It wouldnit be an In The Red record without a guest appearance from either Mick Collins or the Blues Explosionis Judah Bauer; this one has both! Whatis more, the best-album-yet by Speedball Baby o bearers of a torch fondled and molested by The Cramps, Pere Ubu and Tom Waits and numerous other upscale raunchophiles o is a joyous celebration of dark, sleazy, disjointed rockiniroll.

iLike the soundtrack to A Streetcar Named Desire as directed by Richard Kern ... Singer Ron Wardis caustic voice dazzles with the special effects of a Bible Belt theologian.i

iSpeedball Baby are a weird hybrid of noise and silence, light and shade, and half the records gathering dust in the back of your collection. Though they try hard to give the impression that they only picked up their instruments the day before yesterday, amid all the chaos and confusion lies a heart beating out its love and loathing in acutely accurate time.i

***Formed in 1991 after the demise of Jon Spencer's seminal hatefuck band Pussy Galore, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion has always included drummer Russell Simins and guitar ace Judah Bauer. Taking cues from rock, punk, R&B, garage, hardcore, and hip hop idioms, while transcending the limitations of each, the Blues Explosion created a new sound which they've spent the last 16 years honing and redefining. Their music is as deft and bold and life-affirming as the Meters, the Magic Band, or the Birthday Party.

Beginning in 1992, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion earmarked songs from their recording sessions for their Jukebox Single Series on In The Red. The singles, which were based on a similar series done by rockabilly legend Charlie Feathers in the 1970s, featured some of most incendiary, hyper-charged tunes the band ever cut. From their spastic take on Chain Gang's "Son Of Sam" to "Ghetto Mom" (the final single from 2002) these seven-inch sides always showcased the band's full-throttle punk rock side.

Now, for the first time, all five out-of-print singles have been collected in one place on Jukebox Explosion, along with eight previously unheard rarities from the band's early days that are every bit as action-packed, frantic, and furious.

Jukebox Explosion captures one of the most exciting, original, and influential bands to emerge in the 1990s at the absolute peak of their powers. If you dig rock 'n' roll music, this stuff is absolutely essential.

***Austin, TX's The Strange Boys evoke a wild-eyed, porcelain-skinned innocence that is capable of summoning the wayward spirit of Brian Jones. The mystery of the South couples with the mastery of rhythm to create a sound completely timeless and familiar, yet absolutely raw and avant-garde. Greg Enlow's syncopated, organ-driven grooves hark back to The Seeds pushing too hard while guitarist Ryan Sambol's voice wavers beyond comparison. Older brother Philip Sambol keeps the pulse with the aptly named Matt Hammer, who unmercifully pounds an old Ludwig set.

The Strange Boys began as a duo (Hammer and the younger Sambol) in 2003. The other two joined in 2005 and the band has been on tour non-stop ever since. Since 2003 the Boys have recorded a wealth of material which was passed around at shows and to friends, but never officially released. In 2007, Dusty Medical Records put out the Nothing EP, and in 2008, In The Red released the Woe Is You and Me single. Now, finally, the band's proper debut album is seeing the light of day. It's easy to imagine The Strange Boys and Girls Club, a sixteen-track beast, blasting out of any stereo system between The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators and Wire's Pink Flag.

The Strange Boys were the backing band for Mighty Hannibal (the '50s R&B recording artist); were main support for Roky Erickson and the Explosives at the Chaos in Tejas festival; have played South by Southwest the last four years, the Fuck Yeah Fest the last three years, and Austin City Limits, Festival in Music Fest Northwest, and Bamalama (all in 2008); shared bills with Daniel Johnston, Black Lips, Reigning Sound, King Khan and BBQ, Jay Reatard, Mika Miko, No Age, and BRMC; have toured with The Black Angels, Fucked Up, The Carrots, and Crystal Antlers; and are about to go on tour with Darker My Love.
