***In the past year, Jeremy Barnes has lived in England, Prague and New Mexico, gradually gathering the many instruments, musicians, and ethnographies that appear on the new album by A Hawk And A Hacksaw. Recorded in a British church and in an Albuquerque dance studio, Darkness At Noon breathes life from the cultures through which it travels. Barnes expands AHAAH with an orchestra of accordion, harp, oud, Turkish cumbus, and jaw harp. A reverential madman, he drops an impassioned bomb on traditional structures, mines through the wreckage and reassembles pieces with the attentive care given to holy relics. AHAAH doesn't break from musical history as much as sing its essential values in wholly new forms.

Taking long walks down Prague's cobbled streets, Barnes first assembled the entire record in his head, beginning with a Transylvanian folk melody, warped and reconstructed around improvised trumpet, and ending with a cover of "Portlandtown," an American anti-war folk song often played by Woody Guthrie. In between, Barnes touches on Romany gypsy traditions, klezmer, mariachi, early American folk, modern composition, as well as experiences with his previous bands.

Starting in Leicester then returning to the States, Barnes constructed a band that includes trumpeter Dan Clucas (who played with Henry Grimes and Arthur Lee and Love), tuba player Mark Weaver (who has done time with Anthony Braxton), and Heather Trost, who sings, plays violin and piano. He also got his mother to play harp, but he kind of already knew her. Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel traveled to New Mexico to contribute as well.

Darkness At Noon unrolls the curtain to a circus of musical curiosities, and Barnes presides over it all with the zeal of a grand conductor. Pick apart the influences if you like, but better to let it fall over you as one unified whole. Touring the world has never been so easy.

***A Hawk And A Hacksaw was conceived and performed by genre-defying one-man orchestra Jeremy Barnes of Bablicon and Neutral Milk Hotel. The album features intricate piano-based compositions layered with accordion, percussion, horns, bells, a chicken, geese, gongs, cats, a duck, spoons, and pieces of tin. It was recorded over the course of 15 months in the Loire Valley (Saumur, France) with a variety of guest performers.

Recalling Kurt Weill's orchestrations, Carl Stalling's visionary cartoon soundtracks and Tom Waits' more whimsical works, Barnes creates a playfully gothic atmosphere with his multi-layered, frantic compositions. Mixing field recordings with accordion, piano and bursts of drunken choruses, he generates a singular and unnerving orchestral whole. A song's direction can hinge on a dog's bark or a phone ringing, while cacophony and sweet, hymn-like harmonies cohabit in entertainingly unexpected passages. Influenced by everything from Eastern European folk music to Pierre Schaeffer to Spike Jones & His City Slickers, there's a healthy disregard for boundaries at play. A Hawk And A Hacksaw is a soundtrack for PT Barnum deceits and backwoods carnivals, top hats and curly moustaches, but maybe gone a little more screwy. What's more, everything is live-to-tape.

Barnes is currently recording the follow-up, due for release in early 2005. This debut album was originally released by Cloud Recordings in North America, the label run by members of Olivia Tremor Control.

***The Way The Wind Blows, the incandescent third album from A Hawk And A Hacksaw, was partly recorded in a remote Romanian village with members of the justly admired Balkan folk group, Fanfare Ciocarlia. Songwriter Jeremy Barnes (drums, accordion, vocals) and Heather Trost (violin) joyously and romantically romp through traditional sounds, interspersing passionate musical duets with exuberant brass band stomp.

At eighteen Barnes departed his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, in hot pursuit of music and adventure. He travelled the U.S. and Europe, playing with cult faves Neutral Milk Hotel, Bablicon and Broadcast before releasing AHAAH's self-titled debut in 2002 (a whimsical mix of Kurt Weill, Tom Waits and PT Barnum, full of accordion, piano and drunken choruses).

After a stint in Prague, where the celebrated follow-up Darkness at Noon was written, Barnes returned to New Mexico and met violinist Heather Trost who quickly became the second member of the group. In April 2006 Barnes embarked on a wild goose chase, flying to Bucharest with only a phone number for renowned gypsy brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia. The day after they met, Barnes was setting up a makeshift studio in the front room of a local's house in the tiny Moldovan village of Zece Prajini, Romania. The Way The Wind Blows was written in a place without pavement and plumbing, and horse-drawn carts are more common than cars. But the town is suffused with a forgotten music, a joyous mixture of Jewish and gypsy tradition.

Barnes and Trost completed the album at home in Albuquerque with the help of a nineteen-year-old local named Zach Condon, better known these days as Beirut. AHAAH perform as part of Beirut on tour this Fall and return to Europe next Spring to reunite with some of their Balkan friends. The Way The Wind Blows... the sound of the Old World, made new again.

'I Don't Either' is the debut album by Cologne's ultrafunk proteg Oliver Braun. Composed of compulsive, playful electronica and skeletal house music - and influenced as much by P-Funk and the clipped R&B of Timbaland as it is by the fractured Cologne sound - this is the real future funk. Where much recent electronica relies on swathes of effects to bedazzle the listener, Beige's power lies in the way he strips the music down to a radically funky minimum. Initially alien to the ear, Beige takes the over-familiar elements of house music - the basslines, the vocal snatches - and puts them back together in a way you've never heard before. The album doesn't give up its charms right away, but as you filter through the dense layers of ideas, a strange sense of melancholy becomes apparent: it's fun (sometimes funny), but with emotional intent. The unassuming Braun was first brought to the label's attention by Stefan Betke (aka Pole), which was a pretty strong recommendation in itself. A couple of early tracks appeared on Caipirinha's superb 'Deutsche Funk' collection (curated by Bernd Friedmann), and the two tracks on last years 'Osmosis' compilation created a real stir. The artwork for 'I Don't Either' has been selected for inclusion Intro's book of radical sleeve design, 'Sampler 2'. The album was awarded Album Of The Month by respected German techno paper de:bug.

***Cecile Schott returns with her third album as Colleen, the highly personal, distinctly adventurous and confident Les Ondes Silencieuses, which follows Colleen Et Les Boites Ee Musique from late 2006. This album signals a change of approach for Parisienne Schott.

Gone are the samples and loops of old, as the emphasis moves to the natural tones produced by a range of unusual live instruments, largely unadorned. The seeds for this album were sown when the 15 year-old Schott happened upon the film Tous Les Matins Du Monde, based on the life of Marin Marais, the acclaimed 17th Century viola da gamba (or viol) player and composer. The sound and mystery of the instrument set her off on an obsession which reached fruition in 2005 when she found a viola maker who custom-built one for her. More fascinating to play than she had ever imagined, it produced a sound so rich and naturally resonant that the loop-based works which had become a defining characteristic of Colleen's work could be laid to rest.

A whole new approach to composing was needed, both in a more traditional and, paradoxically, a more improvised way. Chord changes, greater use of space and tempo variations were all now possible. The sounds created were key to the overall feel of the record. Unlike Schott's previous album, The Golden Morning Breaks, where the sounds created from each instrument often ended up disguising their identities, Les Ondes Silencieuses creates a platform using the intended sound, and then augments it with more of her innovation and personality. With all these ingredients a new world is created, with one foot in the court of Louis XIV and the other in the imagination of Cecile Schott.

***Cécile Schott's 2003 debut, Everyone Alive Wants Answers, was hypnotizing mix of sampled recordings, found sounds, and lullabies mined from the chaos of recordings never meant to be heard together. Schott delivers an equally stunning achievement of meditative beauty on her latest release; with nary a beat, The Golden Morning Breaks embraces, abandons, and prepares for the warm jets, swathing listeners in a sea of comfort through its simultaneous familiarity and distinctness. However, The Golden Morning Breaks was recorded live with acoustic instruments, some familiar (an earlier life in noise rock and pop bands was called back up to memory) and others learned for this recording.

With a strong knowledge of current rock and electronic music, Schott picked up on late 16th-Century lute songs by John Dowland (from whom the album takes its name), 17th-Century compositions for viola da gamba (an ancestor to the cello), 20th-Century composers, kora techniques of West Africa, and Indonesian folk and gamelan. Composing required a new approach-- through a process of building and shedding-- and even Schott could never have guessed what the final album would sound like; her intention was to find distinctive sound qualities in both everyday instruments, like guitars, and those rarely used, like her 19th century glass harmonicon, a delicate-sounding glass glockenspiel.

The Golden Morning Breaks contains recordings rife with ideas and emotion, songs without traditional beginnings and ends. Rather, what makes the album so special is Schott's intuitive ability to create beauty through simplicity. By avoiding the strict formal approach to writing and recording, Colleen keys into the more primal magical realism in the common every day.

***When offered a commission by France's national radio station to record music for a special broadcast of Atelier De Creation Radiophonique (Radiophonic Workshop Of Creation), it was a perfect opportunity for Colleen's Cecile Schott to further explore her work with music boxes.

The commission would have remained just that, but Schott was so pleased with the results she decided to okay the recordings for official release under the name Colleen Et Les Boites A Musique (Colleen And The Music Boxes).

No stranger to performing and recording with music boxes, Schott yields extraordinary dividends from such a limited palette. The compositions utilize everything from miniature music boxes hidden in 1940s birthday cards to huge Victorian parlor boxes. Not content with the orthodox sounds produced by these novelty instruments, Schott hijacks them, playing them with her fingers or with mallets. She then re-samples, delays and pitch-shifts the results in a quest to produce unique sounds and melodies.

Utilizing the natural loop in each box, the instruments move in and out of time creating a playful ebb and flow. Schott somehow mimics the sound of harps, xylophones, and the Fender Rhodes, coaxing sounds from the boxes one wouldn't have thought possible. Colleen Et Les Boites A Musique is a wonder and arguably the most intimate and melodic release of her career.

Parades is the highly anticipated second album by Denmark's Efterklang-- the follow up to their underground hit of 2004, Tripper. Comprising 11 majestic, otherworldly pop songs, Parades manages to be both magnificently ambitious and engagingly intimate; a breathtaking panorama of sound with few clear antecedents. Music with no boundaries. In a parallel universe, songs like "Miradori" and "Caravani" would be number one forever.

Though the music that became Parades was recorded concurrently with the critically acclaimed (and already collectible) Under Giant Trees mini-album that preceded it in April 2007, the latter was essentially a summation of songs the band had pieced together on tour in 2005. Parades is cut from a different cloth: this is all new material spun from raw ingredients, carefully stitched and lovingly embroidered with fine detail. If you let yourself be enveloped, this living tapestry could take years to unpick.

Childhood friends Casper Clausen, Mads Brauer and Rasmus Stolberg grew up on the small Danish island of Als, close to the German border. Fuelled by youthful ambition, the trio moved to Copenhagen where they were joined by Rune M'lgaard and Thomas Husmer, forming Efterklang in December 2000. Early on, the band instituted a self-sufficient working method that they still apply to everything they do: writing, recording, producing and organizing every element of their music and performance from their Copenhagen bunker.

With the release of Tripper in 2004, Efterklang established themselves as a band apart. The record mixed multilayered vocals, electronic rhythms and string arrangements into a series of emotionally charged orchestral movements containing grand romantic flourishes. Tripper stands as the fastest selling debut album in The Leaf Label's history, and Efterklang went on to become one of Denmark's best loved groups (Under Giant Trees debuted at number one on their home country's singles chart).

Work on Parades began in late 2005 with a series of simple song sketches. Then they began to develop. The recording itself took 18 intense months and involved more than 30 guest musicians, including a string quartet, a brass quintet and three separate choirs. The band describes their writing and recording method as "one long process of sculpturing; adding, stretching or subtracting the pieces of each song, finding the right melodies to guide the different pieces and instrumentation of it all." The album title refers to this approach; the notion being that each song is an assemblage of separate celebratory events, brought together as a accomplished whole.

As the band describes it, "We like the idea that these songs are a huge parade moving past the listener-- each section creating a new experience, an individual room of a house. Yet all the elements fit together, so you get a sense of the entire structure as the elements shift and coalesce."

Unlike previous recordings, the band relied less on digital techniques and went for a palatial sound by recording in large rooms. A boys' choir and a church organ were recorded in a church, while other instruments were recorded in their studio bathroom and hallway; others in an echo chamber. Darren Allison (who worked on My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, and Ladies and Gentlemen by Spiritualized-- records that surely need no introduction) mixed the album on analogue equipment with Efterklang's Mads Brauer, distinguishing the minutiae of sound while keeping the bigger picture of each song firmly in focus.

Parades features similarly lavish artwork to Under Giant Trees, by Danish artists Hvass & Hannibal and UFEX. Like a day-glo Hieronymus Bosch, the design carries through the musical idea of minuscule detail on an epic scale.

Efterklang will take their stunning eight-person live show on a world tour this autumn that will continue until late 2008, with numerous festival appearances planned for summer 2008.

Like a gigantic piece of musical theatre, Parades is a remarkable achievement, dense and diverse, and clearly a lot of fun to put together. You've never heard anything like it.

***Before Tripper, Efterklang's honored and acclaimed first album, they released Springer in 2003 on their own tiny Rumraket label. Those who were enchanted by the beauty and majesty of Tripper will find Leaf's reissue of Springer no less an astounding display of maximal impact from minimal input. Created with computer equipment recording live instruments, yet sounding as if a full-bodied orchestra has approached the microphones-- much like Mum, Kronos Quartet, My Bloody Valentine and Sigur Ros.

Efterklang's EP draws on its classical leanings for gripping drama. The songs are composed with emotional glissandos and pocket symphonics fueled by powerful dual male and female vocals.

Efterklang have already begun work on their next release, but for now, Leaf makes Springer available in the States for the first time.

Copenhagen 10-piece Efterklang evoke a combination of Iceland's autistic-rockers Sigur Ros and the surgical assault of latter-period Aphex Twin. Mixing orchestral instruments, choir and electronic racket, Efterklang are a sonic revelation.

Five stars --The Guardian UK

One of the most stunningly beautiful records of the year, maybe ever.
--Playback St. Louis

Perhaps it's a credit to the sheer number of cooks in the kitchen, but even with this music's grand scale each song is allowed enough space to be able to breathe on its own. And with their vibrant, continually evolving arrangements, Efterklang...ensures that...this music should continue to reverberate in your memory for a long time to come.

  • First EP by Efterklang, whose Tripper was the fastest selling debut record in Leaf's ten year history
  • Growing fanbase among followers of Mum, Sigur Ros, MBV, Bjork
  • Available on CD outside of Denmark for the first time, on vinyl anywhere for the first time

***Copenhagen's Efterklang reach far beyond the expectations of a debut with their ambitious first album for The Leaf label. The ten-member group's music whispers like thunder, combining glacial strings, febrile electronic rhythms, hushed male-female vocals (reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine) and a Greenlandic choir-- all joining together to a transcendent whole. Tripper was a year in the making, and it captures the intricate majesty of the best film soundtracks and most evocative classical works.

Efterklang means "reverberation" (literally, "after noise"), but is loosely translated as "remembrance." Both definitions capture the band's effect; a strong sense of yearning lies at the heart of their work, while ghosts of aggression linger menacingly along the edges. Tripper breathes with sensations and subtleties and emotional depth, bringing to mind the music of Rachel's, Múm or Mogwai.

Formed in early 2001 by Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen and Rasmus Stolberg, the core members soon augmented their line-up with Rune Mølgaard Fonseca's piano and Thomas Kirirath Husmer's percussion work. This line-up recorded their debut EP (and sole release to date), Springer, on their own Rumraket label. To accompany the music, Efterklang recruited accomplished filmmaker Karim Ghahwagi, whose video collages are integral to the band's breathtaking live show (a QuickTime clip of Prey And Predator can be viewed here). The current line-up completed by Nils Karlsson (trumpet) and Kristina Schjelde (trombone), together with Hildur Ársælsdóttir and Edda Rún Ólafsdóttir from Iceland's Amina string quartet, known for their extraordinary work with Sigur Rós.

***With an intuitive understanding of melody and dynamics, Nancy Elizabeth brings a refreshingly Northern turn of phrase to her debut album, Battle and Victory. The Lancashire-born singer's down-to-earth songs are brought to life by her warm and unaffected voice. Unpretentious but effortlessly ambitious, Nancy turns the retro, less-is-more aesthetic of the current acoustic revival on its head. Not content with writing and singing all the songs herself, the 23-year-old also plays most of the instruments, including guitar, khim, Indian harmonium, Appalachian dulcimer and bouzouki, amongst many others. Prominently featured is a 22-string Celtic harp, which she first picked up a little over two years ago, after an inspirational chance meeting with a harp player at a Liverpool gallery. Not long afterwards she received a modest award from a music foundation, and within days had spent it all on the perfect instrument, which has become a cornerstone of her performances. The album was recorded in a 17th Century white stone cottage in the remote Welsh countryside, and a village hall outside Manchester, resulting in an intimate, uncontrived gem of a record. Using a minimum of recording equipment, the heartfelt honesty of her songs is revealed, extending to grander, more complex arrangements when the occasion calls, and bringing in friends to add cello, horns and percussion. While her work is never in thrall to any particular artist or genre, Nancy's music calls to mind aspects of artists as diverse as Nina Nastasia, The Incredible String Band, Radiohead, Jackie McShee, Mogwai, Talk Talk and Led Zeppelin. Immersed in music from an early age (imusic has always seemed more natural than talking,i she says), Nancy has been writing songs since she was 14, and has performed live for six years. In the last twelve months she has appeared at the Green Man Festival (where she will appear again this August) and played alongside A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Tunng and James Yorkston among others. She is currently putting together a small touring group to augment her already much-loved acoustic 'one-girl-band' shows which feature primarily acoustic guitar and her beloved harp. Nancy's debut EP, The Wheel Turning King, was released in 2006 by Manchester's Timbreland Recordings, under her full name, Nancy Elizabeth Cunliffe (she recently dropped her family name, on the grounds that ino one beyond a two mile radius of Wigan can pronounce 'Cunliffe' properlyi). Preceding the album release will be two limited edition 7i singles, 'Hey Son' and 'I Used To Try', both with exclusive B-sides. The singles will also be available for download.

***"Hey Son" is the haunting first single from The Leaf Label's latest signing, Nancy Elizabeth, giving us a dramatic taste of the delights to come on her debut album, Battle and Victory, to be released in September. The single will be available as a download, and in a limited edition of 600 numbered 7" singles for the world.

Packing a lot into its three minutes and 20 seconds, the dynamic "Hey Son" opens with a Davy Graham-inspired guitar figure and Nancy's unmistakably Northern voice, building to a crescendo of crashing percussion and dense vocal harmonies. The B-side song (exclusive to this release) is the evocative "Live By The Sea," a recording of just Nancy's voice and the churning drone of an Indian harmonium.

. The 23-year-old Wigan-born singer has been writing and performing since she was 14. She has played more than 50 gigs around the UK in the last year alone, including slots with A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Tunng and James Yorkston among others. She is currently putting together a small touring group to augment her already much-loved acoustic 'one-girl-band' shows which feature primarily Celtic harp and acoustic guitar.

***"I Used To Try" is the second single by Lancashire-born and bred Nancy Elizabeth. The single precedes Nancy's debut which will be released on September 24. The single will be available as a download, and in a limited edition of 600 numbered 7" singles for the world.

With shimmering dulcimer and sparse, booming percussion, "I Used To Try" is a forceful statement of independence. "I like my world/'cause it's mine": the song's strident declarations are proudly unforgiving.

"In The Morning" (which is exclusive to this single) is more contemplative, just Nancy's delicate piano and down-to-earth, unaffected vocals.

Nancy will embark on a full UK tour in Autumn '07, following the release of the album. She is currently assembling a small touring group to augment her already much-loved acoustic "one-girl-band" shows, which feature primarily acoustic guitar and Celtic harp. You can find a list of all her upcoming shows on her website.

***Three years after the first volume of Music For The Home, Rob Ellis returns with a new, intensely personal solo album which opens a treasure chest of archive recordings from the last decade, documenting a turbulent period in his domestic life. Where volume one was created and edited almost entirely inside a computer, this album includes many piano pieces recorded live. A self-taught pianist, Ellis's idiosyncratic approach to composition has drawn comparisons to Messaien, Reich and Cage, among others. The album also utilizes domestic recordings and concrète techniques, notably on "Church Opposite," which uses the sounds of church bells to startling effect.

Better known for collaborative work as performer and producer, Ellis has been involved with a wide range of projects since his last solo record. Perhaps his most widely acknowledged work is with PJ Harvey, with whom he has worked since 1991. In the last year, Ellis has worked with Marianne Faithfull, Charlotte Hatherley from Ash, Martina Topley-Bird, David Holmes' Free Association vocalist Petra Jean Philippson, Marlene Kuntz, Kitty Wu, and Madrugada. 2004 will see him spending time on tour with PJ Harvey.

Pianist, percussionist and long-time friend of PJ Harvey ... part Lalo Schiffrin, part Erik Satie, but mostly unique ... Ellis weave[s] together seemingly disjointed fragments of sound. --The Times

[A]stonishing ... worthy of a large audience, not to mention critical acclaim --Uncut

Recommended for fans of Cage, Feldman and Ligeti --The Independent

Ultra minimal, pretty abstract, unflinchingly cerebral and slightly paranoid. If you ever felt the urge to take an axe to your dining room table, this could be the appropriate soundtrack --Bizarre

[E]xcellent and evocative --NME

[C]ourageous stuff, realising complex musical ideas without getting too uneasy on the ear --Mojo

[A] highly personal tapestry of fragments that veers between the obsessive control of a classical composer and a more relaxed attitude toward the accidental --The Wire

***By way of introduction, Hanne Hukkelberg's Cast Anchor EP couldn't be more persuasive. This beautifully packaged, limited edition 4-track CD collates two songs from Hanne's forthcoming album, Little Things, with two live cuts that showcase her phenomenal voice. Little Things is released in June, so here's a taste of what's to come.

"Cast Anchor" is a sea-worthy lullaby shanty about the virtues of hedonism. Hanne's astonishing voice is warm and honeyed, and presides over the subtle innovations her band brings to the mix.

The two live tracks further demonstrate the young Norwegian songwriter's abilities. As on record, a performance by Hanne and her group (headed by noted producer Kare Vestrheim) has a warmth and intimacy that comes from subtle confidence. Melodic and entrancing, "Words & A Piece Of Paper" and non-album track "The Professor" are perfect examples of her natural, fluid vocal talents, apparent from the softest hum to the heights of her range.

At just 26, Hanne Hukkelberg has a very bright future ahead of her. We trust you'll join us for the voyage.

  • Lead single from Hukkelberg's upcoming full-length debut
  • Limited edition EP features live and non-album tracks
  • Honeyed vocals that wander in the neighborhood of Cat Power, Beth Orton, Juana Molina and Lisa Germano

***There are times during Little Things that listeners ears may perk up, not quite sure what instrument just floated by. Or, that moment of attention may come when they hear Hanne Hukkelberg glide up and down the musical scale like cotton candy spinning onto a stick. Inevitably, the moment comes, for Hukkelberg has created an album of joyful originality. Little Things bursts with such confidence and ingenuity you'd swear she must have a long, storied career. However, this is Hukkelberg's first record, and she's only 26 years old.

Quickly establishing a reputation in her native Kongsberg, Hukkelberg delved into the melting pot of the close-knit Norwegian scene, playing metal, prog, jazz and all-out improv. She graduated in 2003 from Oslo's National Academy of Music and soon after set to work on this entirely self-composed album. Norwegian musicians from Jaga Jazzist, Kaada (who recently collaborated with Mike Patton on an album for Ipecac), Shining, Kiruna and Exploding Plastix made contributions and the result incorporates piano, banjo, fiddle, accordion, violin, glockenspiel, glass bottles, and bicycle spokes, all of which warmly float around Hukkelberg's honeyed vocals.

The record plays like memory, starting with the chiming lullaby of "Searching"-- whose light percussive touches keep it floating on air. "Cast Anchor" pushes the substantive wispiness even further, choosing the sea as a setting for hedonistic sky gazing. As the album progresses, the ingenuities continue and the sacred tenderness of Hukkelberg's world deepens. Little Things celebrates the subtleties of tiny touches, warm whispers and the singing of a true talent.

***Cousins Sam Britton and Ollie Bown created Icarus in 1997 to represent a collision of ideas that were best expressed musically. I Tweet The Birdy Electric is an adventure in sonic construction and musical history, melding the base of electronic culture's past with new bricks of originality. Like their peers Autechre, Supersilent and Burnt Friedman, Icarus walk a tightrope between inherited musical tradition and experimentalism, using the former in service of the latter without compromising the power of either.

The album twists its musical elements much in the way its title plays on Walt Whitman's famous poem pointing to a possible new direction for electronic music, recombining the past in new ways to render it completely innovative, while incorporating distinctly recognizable acoustic instruments to ground the compositions in an approximation of reality.

Icarus will be touring the world throughout 2004. Their live shows invoke a high-energy laptop duet, leading to wildly different performances with each appearance.

***Like a long exhalation, Adrian Klumpes' debut solo album arrives with an intuitive sense of calm. But this isn't simple chill-out music; Be Still searches for peace in a fractured world. Like a Rothko canvas, the album is minimal and introspective, yet rich and intense-- a rush of color from a deliberately limited palette.

Klumpes, keyboardist for Australian electro-improv trio Triosk, recorded the entire album in a single five-hour session, the sounds captured in the same room, simultaneously premeditated and spontaneous, using the same mics and the same piano. Klumpes explains: "Minimalism assumes much more involved actions before and after the event. I wanted to capture three moments: creation, performance and process ... each of these with a certain stillness. It's about honesty; concentrated awareness, a commitment to follow the ideas through without hesitation or pretense." A sense of unease pervades the album, drawing the listener in, and highlighting a narrative rare in instrumental music. This edgy tranquility is typical of Klumpes' work with Triosk and his collaborations with Jan Jelinek.
