***Feisty French fun from a group of musical mavericks lost in London, Bad Taste Emergency is rubber band funk, avant punk, and even a touch of grunk. Andrea's Kit is like Captain Beefheart buggering Damon Albarn-- and god knows he deserves it after that appalling The Good, The Bad, and The Queen album...

Just as Public Enemy's "Rebel Without a Pause," this music was made with machines, but do you give a fuck? No. Just roll up your sleeves and stick your hands up the arse of this thoroughbred stallion. Inhale the fumes, gag on the gas. Andrea's Kit won't change your life, but maybe it's time you changed your underwear?

***This record is a sprawling journey through bouncy pop, brooding jazz, eastern scales, 50's lounge music, bhangra, philly soul, contemporary folk and classical music. Yet it is also a small record. Each song lives and breathes in its own little world.

Barbed is Alex and Alex previously responsible for the 'plunderphonic' classic 'Barbed' released on the legendary Recommended label way back in 1994. Veterans of stupidly long concerts with the likes of Negativland, People Like Us and the Tape Beatles, they went on to join an embryonic Add N to X, provide the soundtrack for Joram ten Brink's arthouse classic 'The Man Who Couldn't Feel' and supply material for numerous compilations, live records & remixes. But yet all the time they yearned to make a different kind of music, one that was at the same time familiar and yet alien, pop fluff with hidden spikes...barbed as it were. And this is it 'Doubleclick Countryside'.

***Batfinks was born in 2008 minus 26 years in Manchester. In the early years of school, he was introduced by a small sparrow to a Jim Noir. They straight away found that if they combined their knowledge of nothing, they could soon create something, and for the next 18 or so years created nonsense noise, gigged, broke their instruments, and threw sausage rolls at each other.

Batfinks got into the free party scene; through the Moss Lane/Strangeways party people he met the lovely Arie Bolt, whose strange outlook on life and chikamalee vocals seemed to fit in with his. He then released a couple of EPs through Jonathon Fisher's Hippocamp.net and did a remix for the Sirconical's Gioco 12-inch, and it all seemed to grab the attention of the listening folk. Finally some discs made their way to the Lo Recordings office and the new Lo offshoot label, Loaf. And what strange and marvelous music it is--twisted pop beyond your wildest dreams and perhaps beyond your endurance, so malignantly and magically warped it is.

ELO, Aphex Twin, The Beach Boys, Kate Bush and Frank Zappa, all fried up and served with a double helping of rave noodles.

"It's music, Jim, but not as we know it."

Staggering, startling and strangely beautiful. Let a little Batfinks into your life.

***The softly psychedelic sound of Dark Captain Light Captain-- mesmeric, delicate, and slightly twisted-- is all over Circles, the latest release from the East London quartet. This four-song EP is a taster for their upcoming full-length album and marks a transition from their original, more minimal bedsit vibe to a much more muscular, live sound. An added brass section and the legendary beats of Chin Keeler of Quickspace fame give the songs a gently pulsing, almost Can-like drive.

Recent shows throughout London have seen the band getting deeper and stronger, weaving the songs into a haunting web of acid-tinged folk with sweet harmonies, chiming guitars, spaced-out brass, and touches of electronic deviance.

The songs here have been lovingly polished and brought into focus by the team of Robin Proper-Sheppard (God Machine, Sophia) and Kenny Jones, and offer a sweet taste of the righteous sound of Dark Captain Light Captain. Rejoice!

"In an increasing world of electro beats and synthesizers, Dark Captain Light Captain offer a depth and substance beyond the label of their clothes or brightness of their jeans and trainers." --Supersweet Magazine

***East London's Dark Captain Light Captain came together in early 2006 fueled by a love for folkish sounds, black coffee and incessant late night bedroom recordings sessions. A speculative myspace page containing some early demos made quite a few people happy, and just a few months into their existence they found themselves featuring as co-writers and performers on "Seven Sisters", the superb debut album by German folk noir chanteuse Milenasong. Countless London shows followed (including a double feature at the LoveBox Festival in Victoria Park) as well as appearances in Oslo and Berlin.

"Jealous Enemies b/w Mid-Session Interval" is the debut recordings from the Captains, their unique (but strangely familiar) textured sound and vocal harmonies is without a doubt an indication of greater things to come. ***French pop heritage is littered with smooth and creamy icons: Gainsbourg, Karen Anne, Adamo, and Francois Hardy. Gable, however, is a completely different kettle de poisson. Wearing their influences on their sleeves-- Moldy Peaches, Meat Puppets, early Sonic Youth-- they stick a big, lovely lump of absolutely bonkers, stinky musical cheese in the face of their suave ancestry.

Seven Guitars With a Cloud of Milk is Gable's second album, containing 18 tracks clocking in at just under 40 minutes. The songs cover such diverse topics as group suicide, the state of urban music, self-realization, cats, and drunk foxes, in the best tradition of DIY bands like The Vaselines, Violent Femmes, and Beat Happening.

In the coming months, the band will be playing shows throughout France as well as elsewhere in Europe, and a UK tour is in the works following the release of Seven Guitars With a Cloud of Milk.

***Welcome to the world of an attention-deficit-disorder musician. Following a flurry of collaborations, remixes and assorted undocumented sound capers, the prolific Kid Twist coughs up his debut EP for the LOAF label. A rightous blast through the generes mixed into a Molotov cocktail of northern soul, bass-heavy electro, post-punk spunk and glitchy techno, this is soulful pop music with laconic new wave disco slant.

Like Jamie Lidells hairy Scottish cousin on a sunny day beach stroll with James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. Kid Twist is Colin Bailey, a native of Oban (a small fishing town on the west coast of Scotland) who re-located to Glasgow as a keen nipper to play in Metal bands. There he immersed himself in the vibrant electronic music scene that inspired him to make the music in front of you now.

Moving to London, Kid Twist met up with LOAF label-mate Pierre Conti (the man behind Andrea's Kit)who helped with production duties on this EP. Along a handful of early adopters of the Twist Sound is Mary-Anne Hobbs, who has already aired demo versions of "I Can't Dance" and "Ah Oo Ee You You" on her late night R1 Show. Meantime our man is busy working on his debut album, produced by electronica pioneer (and Bjork/U2 conspirator) Howie B, while continuing to DJ at and co-promote one of Glasgow"s fastest growing club nights, Kaput!.

***Crickey, are these cows playing the instruments?

Somewhere in the German countryside, inside a small under equipped studio, four cows are constantly exploring their weird version of lo-fi electronic country music. They are known as The Lonesomes. Well, either that or they are actually the solo recording entity of musician Adi Gelbart, who claims he is just the cows' manager. Though the Lonesomes' music originates from country, it seems to cover a great range of styles and influences from easy-listening through lo-fi minimalism to broken jazz and library music, creating an entirely new genre-- "Cow-Fii."

At times like a delicate update of Soft Machine, at other times recalling the offbeat insanity of Joe Meek, the deep psych vibes of Edan or the otherworld pop of Grandaddy, This Is Cow-Fi is nothing if not unique and in these increasingly conservative times, a welcome breath of fresh air amongst the mass of slop rock and techno bores that abound. The Lonesomes released their debut album-- a tribute to the great outdoors-- at the end of 2003 to rave reviews. It was played extensively on the famous New-Jersey based radio station WFMU, where the album was also featured on a top 10 albums of the year list. Since then, Adi has collaborated with esteemed bedroom musicians Dan Deacon (Carpark Records) and Frederik Schikowski and his work has been included on numerous compilations for the Mille Plateaux and Digital Kranky labels.

Say it loud I love cows and I'm proud!

...(The Lonesomes) is a fun release, and though it may seem like a novelty at first, it has a certain inner depth that makes it a much more durable record. Matt Shimmer, Indieville

***iSuddenly, I didnit quite mind not being modern...i (Roland Barthes).

This quote from the late great critic seems somehow appropriate when describing the music of Charlie March. Not to say that his music is any way old fashioned but thereis an underlying depth, an emotional sensibility that you donit hear much these days and is all the more unusual coming from someone born only 24 years ago.

After The Clouds Clear is the debut EP from Charlie March. Charlie has worked previously in eThe Toy Orchestrai with Andy Ramsay of Stereolab/Europa 51 as well as providing soundtracks for various short films and installations. For this EP Charlie has gathered around him a diverse selection of talented musicians, lending this project an unusual and distinctive charm.

Joe Mount AKA Metronomy is a rising star in the electronica scene and has produced, mixed and contributed a remix for the EP. Dominic Murcott of the High Llamas did the strings arrangements while the Elysian Quartet (Simon Fisher-Turner, Killa Kela, Hot Chip and Max De Wardener) provided the lush and cheerful strings.

Like a soft collision between Aphex Twin at his most melodic and Nick Drake at his string soaked best or some hybrid of Steve Reich and Syd Barrett scoring a Tim Burton movie, the music of Charlie March has a lingering, delicate beauty that will be around for a long time.

***The follow up to the critically acclaimed When the Clouds Clear EP , "In The End" sees Charlie further developing the notion of stripped down pop songs; songs, not tracks, songs with an emotional sensibility that you don't hear much these days.

"In The End" features four concise tunes, none longer than two and a half minutes. The first of them is a cover of Daniel Johnston's classic "True Love Will Find You in The End," the lo-fi arrangement of the original, replaced with lush strings and delicate vocals. "Piano Song" is reminiscent of Nico at her most melodic, whilst "Thinking of You" marries gamelan clang with stately piano. The EP closes with the gorgeous drfiting vibes of "When The Clouds Clear," like Steve Reich having tea with Ray Coniff.

"In The End" sees Charlie continuing his collaborations with Joe Mount AKA Metronomy who produced the EP, High Llamas member Dominic Murcott (string arrangements and vibraphone) and The Elysian Quartet (Hot Chip, Simon Fisher-Turner and Max De Wardener) who provide the lush strings.

Charlie is currently finishing a remix for The Klaxons and working on his debut album with High Llamas' main man (and arranger extraordinaire) Sean O'Hagan.

***Motohiro Nakashima has come of age since his Lo Recordings debut And I Went to Sleep. This time around, using a variety of acoustic instruments, field recordings and electronic sounds, Nakashima creates a lush sound world of delicate textures and intense peaks-- the epic "Looking for my constellation" is a case in point. The whole album is laced with Nakashima's pure, sensitive guitar melodies. For listeners seeking shelter in these increasingly turbulent times, I Dreamt Constellation Sang, offers a little warmth and comfort.

I Dreamt Constellations Sang is the second release for LOAF: Lo Alternative Frequencies, a new label operating under Lo Recordings' roof. This new venture creates a dialogue between visual artists and musicians by releasing quality music paired with inspired artwork in strictly limited proportions.

The artwork featured on this release is Sergei Sviatchenko's Free Horse With Little White And Blue Spots. Sviatchenko has had numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe and the USA, and in 2002 founded the Senko Studio, a gallery showing emergent artists from all around the world.

***Much been said about Vincent Oliver in the past eighteen months-- his unique approach to songwriting fuses the quirky lyrical elements of DIY pioneer R. Stevie Moore and Arab Strap's Aidan Moffat and musically treads the thin line between the shoegazing electronica of Pygmalion-era Slowdive and the utter pop of New Order's Power, Corruption, and Lies. His two first EPs on Loaf are the work of a young songwriter with infinite pop potential. EP3 concludes Oliver's bedroom recording series with reinterpretations and remixes from some of his most notable fans.

Nathan Fake, Border Community's young star and Oliver's tour-mate, lends a hand to rearrange the blissfully confusing "Cluods in the Haed" into a psychedelic techno affair that has been getting dancefloor support from Border Community chief James Holden. Canadian Nathan Johnson, also known as Hrdvsion, chops Oliver's popiest moment into a chirpy clockwork math workout.

Loaf's own Andrea's Kit takes the epic "I Want it All" a notch down toward a heavy, analogue-synth bloodbath, while Morr Music's Isan (who recently collaborated with Oliver on the lovely "Brave the Cold" from Loaf's Christmas compilation That Fuzzy Feeling) morphs "Drunk Fun in London" into a reverb-drenched waltz. The orchestral piece, "If Yellow Were Sad," gets a droney makeover from post-rock veterans Rothko, and to conclude, Oliver includes an extended live version of the EP2 crowd-pleaser, "Her Doorbell."

***Horn is the third release for Dublinis own, Paul Morrin aka Spectac, and his debut for LOAF. Fidgeting between sharp-edged percussive sound and melody saturated riffs, Horn comes across as a piece full of tenderness, intricacies and streams of warm caressing patterns. Imagine a patchwork blanket lovingly handed down through your family, generation to generation, with each little patch more intricate, textural and inviting than the last.

Spectac is quite the veteran of the Irish electronica circuit. In fact he actually started making waves in Dublin in 1993 under his PSR-400 moniker, using only guitar pedals, broken turntables and scrap metal. Spectac has not confined his creative output to the Emerald Isle, far from it; heis actually released music around the world, from Poland to China and back again, delighting many with his compositions and execution.

After a debut live show supporting Lee Scratch Perry, he quickly notched up several European festivals and a varied range of fans to boot. But not content with showcasing himself to the world, Spectac returned refreshed and has been key in set-up iFront End Syntheticsi, a record label dedicated to Eire-Tronic-Eire (excuse the pun).
