Artist: A-TEAM Title: Rally Round The Home Team
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
MASS05
Price: $6.75 Label: Massmen
Release
Date:
4/24/00
***Revered as two of the most prolific and intriguing MCs in Los Angeles, Aceyalone (of Freestyle Fellowship) and Abstract Rude (of Abstract Tribe Unique) have been collaborating for the past eight years and created several classics in the process (notably "Deep and Wide" and "B Boy Kingdom" on Aceylone's All Balls Don't Bounce and "Me and My Main" on the Beats and Lyrics 2 compilation). Their new 12-inch - which some magazines are already calling one of the best of the year - features on the A-Side "Rally Round the Home Team," produced by Fat Jack, a sure-shot anthem for L.A. and every radio deejay and turntablist. The AA-Side, "I Love It When a Plan Comes Together," produced by DJ 'D, showcases their extraordinary lyrical skills and the production talents of Massmen's newest producer. Both tracks have radio-ready versions and guarantee to create noise at all points.

  • Major talents of Los Angeles hip hop community
  • Promotional tour dates in the U.S., Canada and Europe
  • This 12-inch precedes a full-length featuring both artists

"Aceyalone's name is synonymous with L.A.'s subterranean hip hop community and his abstract approach to the genre has single-handedly crafted a new classification of rhythm technology. The poet/prophet has lyrically articulated the esoterics of life, rarely expressed or understood in modern music. Acey's insightful grasp and slick delivery often converts the mainstream suburbanite into a dedicated follower. Such a motivated individual with real inventiveness is a welcome change from the disheartening rhetoric saturating the rosters of most major labels." -Strength

***Abstract Tribe Unique, along with fellow L.A. pioneers Freestyle Fellowship and Aceyalone, have gained worldwide notoriety for their mesmerizing live performances and thought-provoking, consciousness-raising lyrical styles. Artist: AWOL ONE Title: Trilobites B/W Static
Format: 12" Catalog

MASS010
Price: $6.00 Label: Massmen
Release
Date:

***Awol One has long been considered one of the most sought-after lyricists in the independent hip hop generation. As one of the original members of the Massmen crew, he has developed his talents alongside the likes of the Abstract Tribe Unique, The Shapeshifters, Afterlife crew, as well as many others. Because of his raspy voice, sing-song delivery, and "why me?" lyrical style, Awol One has carved out a loyal following in the L.A. underground and earned himself the title of "hip hop's Lou Reed."

"Trilobites" captures the best of his rhyme style and the best of D.W. (D.J. 'D) and Fat Jack's production. Backed with "Static" from DJ 'D's The Worker's Union, this 12-inch serves as an introduction to many releases to come from Awol One on the Massmen label.

  • Previous 12-inch reached the top ten of numerous U.S. and Canadian college radio charts, and received an 8-out-of-10 in Spin
  • Second single and full length on Massmen soon to follow
  • Previous work with Kool Keith and D-Styles

***As one of the original members of the Massmen family, Awol One has developed his sweet style and sing-song delivery alongside the talents of Freestyle Fellowship, The Shapeshifters, and Abstract Tribe Unique. After many projects through other producers (Massive, Mike Nardone and Daddy Kev), Awol One teams up with Fatjack, his crew member and music producer of 15 years. Although they have released numerous songs together on compilations and other releases, this is their first project mano a mano. Propaganda starts off in nightmarish fashion with an eerie loop from Fatjack, mixed with an electronic scratch from DJ Roach that has a grunge feel. Awol One's "Theory of Evolution" lyrics lend the perfect B-movie feel to the track. Other highlights include the project's first single "Trilobites," and the album's most accomplished track "The Eye In Team." Rounding out the album is a return to '80s glam with "???????????????," a rock anthem that will have you wondering if Awol is working the stand-up circuit in between albums. Both CD and vinyl include the "stoner-friendly" instrumental version

***From the same masterful, ear-blowing elements as The Highlife Movement's ...estuary, a breakout underground release from last year, up-and-coming mix-chilling producer DJ 'D delivers a brilliant sophomore album of head-satisfying orchestral hip hop groove. With improved production, 'D continues to kick out his visceral aesthetic-- melancholy loops and provocative speeches delivered among robust, beat-kicking tracks featuring legendary emcees Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, Awol One, and Gennessee & Bazooka Joe Gotti of The Street Reportaz. Keeping his trademark style intact, DJ 'D expands his boundaries, utilizing a wider musical spectrum of source material, as well as a group of saucy female vocalists to give it some k-k-kick.

Artist: FAT JACK Title: Cater To The Dj
Format: CD Catalog

MASS012CD
Price: $16.50 Label: Massmen
Release
Date:

***Project Blowed has long been a beacon for hip hoppers worldwide looking for something beyond the status quo. The emcees who have come out of Project Blowed have proven themselves to be true lyricists and/or griots trapped in a time where style and intellect are grossly underappreciated. Fat Jack, the most dynamic producer of the L.A. underground, has spent his career cultivating a unique musical sound to match each emcee's brilliant style, and now Massmen re-releases this 39-track anthem to the L.A.underground (and to hip hop itself). Cater to the DJ is the bridge between the heads who like strictly boom bap and the heads who look for more style in a hip hop song. Featuring the talents of Aceyalone, Medusa, Awol One, Abstract Rude, Volume 10, P.E.A.C.E., and many others, this 2xCD is finally home on Massmen, a label that caters to heads of all curvatures.

***Keeping with the tradition of left coast creativity and respect-before-commercial-success idealism, the Highlife Movement delivers collages of eerie loops and tribal messages twisted in the concept of history repeating itself negatively in urban music. This collaboration of freestyles includes Abstract Rude, Aceyalone and Mikah 9 (Freestyle Fellowship), Karen Wilson, Darry Freeman, Ginseng Roo, Lady Blue (the Coup), Mike B and Lili Kenya and Dr. Doom. This project was originally designed for the Bay Area Hip Hop Coalition DJs and other college radio programs but has been especially rearranged for this release. Estuary is the complete collection for those who appreciate some of Californiais premier underground freestyle talent.

Artist: MASSIVE Title: Beats 2 Technics

***Over the past 15 years, L.A. underground music has been defined by its lyricism and multi-dimensionality. Massive's raw production, along with FatJack and DJ SLIP, were the beats that the pioneers of the Good Life such as Freestyle Fellowship, Jurassic 5, The Pharcyde and others displayed the skills on. Massive was first heard outside the region through his work on the Project Blowed album as well as Abstract Tribe Unique's Mood Pieces album.

Also known as Awol One's first producer and music mentor, Massive has a signature sound that spawned next generation of L.A. producers such as Mike Nardone, SACH, Hive and C.V.E. After a small hiatus to work behind the scenes on major label projects with artists like Snoop Dogg and Kid Frost, Massive brings the beats of Project Blowed and The Good Life out of the cramped spaces, and off the dusty mix tapes, and drops them onto wax for deejays and emcees hoping to blow up their own regional battle circuits. This long overdue slice of L.A. history consists of a variety of never-released beats and breaks to keep every emcee thirsty, and a breakdown of the drum loop on each song for the little producer in all of us. Cover art by Massmen's favorite political prisoner, Awol One.

  • Long overdue beats and breaks album by influential L.A. producer who has worked with everyone who's anyone
  • Sure to garner interest from followers of Project Blowed, Freestyle Fellowship, Abstract Tribe Unique, and the L.A. underground

Nineteen tracks featuring the finest emcees from Los Angeles: Aceyalone & Freestyle Fellowship, Abstract Rude & ATU, The Nonce, C.V.E., Volume 10, Medusa, Rifleman and Ganjah K. and others. The intensity of demand from DJs and vinyl junkies searching for copies of this LP and CD mandated a re-releases of this highly respected, highly experimental groundbreaking project. A must-have.
