Artist: ALLEN, DAEVID Title: Gentle Genie
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
MRE05
Price: $12.00 Label: Mister E
Release
Date:
8/23/04
***The songs on Gentle Genie all come from 1985-2000 and are the best of the period's acoustic songs. The album is the companion to Dreaming A Dream and has been remastered for release.

Various permutations of Gong have worked together over the years under various names including Mother Gong, Expresso Gong, Gongmaison, Planet Gong and so on and so forth. An amazing array of musical talent have moved through the ranks; some versions of the band have Daevid Allen on board and others do not. Allen has once again become the leading light and inspiration behind the very fluid Gong concept that began over thirty years ago, when the band came into being almost by accident in the late '60s. Allen was refused entry back into Britain following European dates with Soft Machine, decided to stay in Paris, and began working alongside Gilli Smyth and various musicians on what would eventually be recognized as Gong.

The first recordings from the band, Magick Brother, Mystic Sister, were released in 1970, followed by the Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy: Camembert Electrique; Flying Teapot; Angels Egg and You (which tell the tale of Zero The Hero and the pothead pixies). This mythological story was extremely popular and the resultant albums sold exceptionally well. Following the departure of Allen, Smyth and Steve Hillage, the band moved in a more jazz-oriented direction with the addition of Allan Holdsworth alongside Pierre Moerlen and Didier Malherbe.

Artist: BRAIN DONOR Title: S/T
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
MRE06
Price: $12.00 Label: Mister E
Release
Date:
3/28/05
***Brain Donor was formed by Julian Cope and Spiritualized's Doggen in July 1999, in order to satisfy Cope's longterm urge to fuse Van Halenesque metal with garage rock. As early as his 1992 album Jehovahkill, Cope had asked Doggen-- fresh from the Gun'n'Roses Use Your Illusion demos-- to contribute a speed-metal solo to the Krautrockstyled "Necropolis." But Cope and Doggen's mutual fixation with Blue Cheer and early Kiss led them to go the final mile, complete with make-up and platform boots. The first show at the Queen Elizabeth Hall saw half the audience walk out, and new drummer Kevlar-- also of Spiritualized-- wondered what he'd gotten himself into. Since then, Brain Donor's two albums, Love Peace & Fuck (2001) and the Too Freud To Rock'n'roll, Too Jung To Die (2003)-- have well illustrated Cope's description of the band as a "stuporgroup." This new album on Mister E. conflates the first two albums into one "best of" in preparation for Cope and Doggen's next 'Donor album, to be recorded in San Francisco with Monoshock's singer/drummer Rubin Fiberglas.

Artist: FLYING LIZARDS Title: Secret Dub Life Of...
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
MRE02
Price: $12.00 Label: Mister E
Release
Date:
5/19/03
***The source tapes for this CD were recorded in Jamaica by Jah Lloyd (aka Patrick Francis) as part of a series he made for Virgin Records' Front Line label. The original players of this music remain unidentified. Jah Lloyd used various combinations of musicians but did not include who played on which tracks. In the late '70s the original tapes were not released and were offered to The Flying Lizards' David Cunningham with the suggestion that he remix the music. Cunningham accepted the project, expecting lots of time in one of Virgin's studios to play with the music and the equipment, only to be presented with a mono master tape, which forced him to invent (or perhaps re-invent) techniques of editing, looping, filtering and subtraction to deal with unremixable mono material (these were the days before samplers). The techniques used here expanded his vocabulary of musical electronic (as opposed to electronic music) treatments and appear in a very different form on records made at that time (notably "Forth Wall," his collaboration with Patti Palladin, and production work on Michael Nyman's records).

This very quirky, ambient dub record will remind listeners of some of Lee "Scratch" Perry's earlier albums (reggae / dub beats with samples and sounds buried deep in the mix), mixed with the low-tech tape butchery of Perry and Kingsley's early proto-sampling work. Fans simply expecting the early 'Lizards' sound minus vocals are probably going to be a bit disappointed, but only a bit. These instrumental songs have plenty to be amazed by buried in them: creaking hinges, bouncing ping pong balls, popping champagne corks, wounded trombones, shuffling papers and other odd sounds all unfolding themselves through the layers. It's difficult not to admire Cunningham's make-shift, use-the-tools-he-has attempts at sampling, and how successfully he has created a mellow, whimsical sound. Cunningham definitely has a style to his sampling, and the roots of that style are revealed here.

  • Roots of The Flying Lizards revealed
  • The buried dub of Lee "Scratch" Perry meets Perrey and Kingsley's proto-sampling
  • Irresistible example of the lure of the salvage and its unintended results
  • Dare we say, a lost classic?

Artist: GILES, GILES AND FRIPP Title: Brondesbury Tapes
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
MRE01
Price: $12.00 Label: Mister E
Release
Date:
9/16/02
***It was Michael and Peter Giles who recruited guitarist Robert Fripp to join their band, whose inventiveness and competence as a guitarist the fraternal rhythm section found quite attractive. The Brondesbury Tapes, a unique set of domestic recordings which have languished for over thirty years in a private collection, were the swan song of this provincial trio who moved to London to seek fame and fortune with their music. The spirit of the Giles and Giles & Fripp survived, of course, and was reincarnated as the legendary King Crimson.

This is the first time that these recordings have been available on CD. They've been digitally remastered and incorporate previously unreleased material. Sleeve notes by Peter Giles are highly detailed and feature previously unpublished photographs.

While Robert Fripp is certainly a key drawing card of this title, The Giles brothers had played in no fewer than seven predominately singles bands by the time of this late '60s recording - Johnny King And The Raiders, Dave Anthony and The Rebels, The Dowland Brothers and The Soundtracks, The Sands, The Interns, Trendsetters Ltd., and The Brain.

Artist: GONG Title: Acid Motherhood
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
MRE04
Price: $13.00 Label: Mister E
Release
Date:
3/22/04
***When the standard-bearers of 21st Century psychedelia Acid Mothers Temple merge with experimental originators like the maverick Anglo/French collective Gong, it's total music-- post-industrial nu-psychedelia at its most intense and beguiling. Gong return to the creative fire once more-- to be reborn. From the crucible comes the glorious chaos that had to happen. In February 2003, Kawabata Makoto and Cotton Casino (both of Acid Mothers Temple), with guitarist Josh Pollock (of University of Errors) joined Gong originators Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth, plus drummer-son Orlando Allen and Indonesian bassist Dharmawan Bradbridge in Byron Bay, Australia, to record a new Gong CD together-- an album is like no other in the band's 35-year history. For the first time there are three wildly different guitarists, no sax and, on half the tracks, no bass player.
