***Two 7-inches packaged together. Ninja Tune heavyweight 60 HZ stealthily teams up with Jamaican vocalist Cecile on a hard-nosed version of dancehall to come. Dirty guitar riffs swirl around a tough beat with Cecile chatting over the top about some rather lewd behavior and how it should be done. B-side features the instrumental cut "A. Montan Riddim." Ghislain Poirier offers a killer track off his forthcoming No Ground Under album to Megasoid (Sixtoo and Hadji Baraka of Wolf Parade) to remix. The result features Face-T's vocals paired with "Stabshot" (A-side) and "Frontway" (B-side) riddims. Artwork designed by Sixtoo.

Happy days are hear again. Go back, way back...the year was 1994 and a then relatively unknown UK label dipped their toes into the US/Canadian market by licensing their top releases to a company called Instinct/Shadow. Between the years of 94-96 various records were released through this arrangement. More times than not, what was being released was a fairly butchered interpretation of the original UK versions. In 1996 Ninja said "to hell with this" and set up their own office over here to do it right. So off we went, doing our thing, but secretly also counting the days to when we could put these fine selections back in our domestic US catalog, packaged and sequenced the way they were meant to be. This is one of 11 classics re-issued in North America in 2003, and features a lovely new cover design to boot. And Now The Original Press Release From Way Back When... Gropejazztickle Slipnology Blow away the snow and try a different kinda winter chill as 9 Lazy 9 fix you up with slopejazztickling aplenty. James Braddell, infamous for his pervy leanings as Funki Porcini, teams up with flavorsome Neapolitan neo-industrial funkster sidekick Keir Fraser (from Phosphorous & Biomuse on Language Records). Yes 9 Lazy 9 are back on the schlock. So sit back.... relax..... and allow your aural cavities to be filled with brimful......aaaah! Sho-nuff.

9 Lazy 9 joined Ninja Tune when Ninja Tune was just one grey metal cupboard in a run down London loft. Operating out of Italy in 1992 they soon gained respect for their ground cracking first album "Paradise Blown". Their sound, distinctively more sun than North Sea, is a smoky Mediterranean mix of vines and good times. Keir Fraserello and Giacomo Braddellini have been making music for many years in different guises before combining forces in Rome in the early nineties. They have been working with some of Italy's finest musicians on their latest album, "Sweet Jones", recorded in the Umbrian Hills near Orvietto. Gianluca Petrella plays trombone, Mishael Levron guitar; Manu Bandettini plays flute with Adriano Tirelli on bassoon. The combined force brings you one of the freshest records to come out of Italy for some time.

Yeah, you know, I'm just tired of the city, too much traffic, too much networking, I'm thinking of going to live on a boat, perhaps somewhere Zen like Cambridgeshire, get in touch with nature, get away from all the bullshit, ja, you know? I'm sorry Mr. Snake Oil Salesman but all of the houseboats in Cambridgeshire have been re-possessed by Animals on Wheels, who spend their spacetime and money wondering whether they were made by Accident or Design. Check the plot - Stan's Soluble Fish makes Toasted Bot Bop for the Family of Nodding Dogs while the Flush Fit Fanatic does Shoddy Kicks on the Clay Pot. Within these walls lies the mutated brain of Andy Coleman, who has already had a run of boisterous biznizz with those bastards of Bop-Hop, Bovinyl. This is what you get when you shove Squarepushing pegs through jump-a-round holes. You won't find Soluble Ducks on vinyl as it has already been Bovinyled. If Bovinyl was called BoCD you wouldn't find it on CD, as you won't find the tracks called Invert & Click, & Break Some Off Son, which are vinyl only. Confused? Good. On each Animals on Wheels release you'll find a cut-out Roy token. When you have collected enough you can send them to Castlemill, which is the name of the boat in Cambridgeshire where the Animals live. No-one knows what you get for your tokens, or how many is enough. We can't give you all of the answers all of the time.

Artist: ANTIBALAS Title: Liberation Afrobeat Vol. 1
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
ZENCD 56 CD
Price: $9.50 Label: Ninja Tune
Antibalas (Spanish for "Bulletproof"; literally "Anti bullets") is the next generation of Afrobeat. They follow in the tradition of the Black President, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, uniting Nigerian highlife, jazz, funk and traditional African elements with unabashed political messages. This Brookyln-based fourteen-plus piece band hits hard with the left and the right - monstrous horns and bass layered over funky polyrhythmic beats and breaks coupled with furious lyrics challenging and attacking the capitalist system and inciting insurrection in English, Yoruba, and Spanish. But don't expect a revival band on par with traditional cover bands. Antibalas brings Afrobeat to another level with all new compositions influenced by ska and by their cross cultural underpinnings. "When Antibalas started, it had more of a Latin feel," says group leader and baritone saxophonist MartIn Antibalas. "We use the term 'Afrobeat,' but it's funny to make those distinctions, because it's all semantics-so much of this music is borrowed. What we call 'Afrobeat' has crossed the Atlantic so many times-from Africa to Cuba and back-and then filtered through all of our experiences." Antibalas formed in May 1998 by members of Desco Records' Soul Providers and Daktaris. This union of Latinos, whites, Afro-Americans, Africans and Asian-Americans resides in New York, spread out over Brooklyn, Harlem, and the Bronx. Every Friday night for over a year straight Antibalas has hosted AFRICALIA, America's only live Afrobeat party, where they have introduced New York's best dub, cumbia, and batucada bands to the Afrobeat audiences. The group "defies history, "as the San Francisco Bay Guardian reported "They retain a third-worldist view that is both refreshingly oppositional and hopelessly nostalgic. Their credo seems to be 'all nations under Afrobeat.'" This do-it-yourself band have been pressing their own CDs, doing all of their sound engineering, booking, marketing, and hosting a fast-growing weekly party: Africalia, America's only live Afrobeat party. Their new CD Liberation Afrobeat, Vol. 1 was produced in their self-built studio. Members: Martin "Doctor" C-Perna- baritone saxophone, words; Michael "Don Bonus" Wagner- trombone, tenor guitar; Mother Africa- second guitar; Phil "Ekbon Ota" Ballman- percussion, drums; Fernando "Bugaloo" Velez- first conga, bell; Giancarlo "Papi" Luiggi- sticks, shekere; Duke Amayo- shekere, congas, vocals; Luke O'Malley- guitar; Frank "Binky" Stribling- bass guitar; Victor "Ticklah" Axelrod- organ; Jordan McLean- trumpet; Michael "H-Bomb" Herbst- alto, tenor saxophones; Dylan Fusillo- sticks, drums; Anda Szilagyi- trummpet; Ernesto Abreu- congas; Aaron "liquid" Johnson- trombone.

***Blockhead is the go-to man for anyone in the know on the indie hip hop scene. With his tough instrumentals, he has helped propel MC talents such as Aesop Rock, Cage, Slug, and Murs. Wanting to stretch out his creativity, he approached Ninja Tune with a killer demo for what was to become his debut album, Music By Cavelight, which contained the head-nodding hit of 2004, iInsomniac Olympics.i Since then, he has racked up a second Ninja Tune album, Downtown Science, and slew of production creditsomost notably on the upcoming Aesop Rock album, None Shall Pass, for Def Jux (due out late August 2007). To coincide with that release and the subsequent tour (on which he is opening all 45 dates), Blockhead has decided to self-release Uncle Tonyis Coloring Book, an upbeat collection of fun instrumentals with the trademark Blockhead production style, tough beats, and catchy grooves that infect his earlier releases. Simon Green aka Bonobo is back with nine perfectly formed tracks on a perfectly formed album. No huge, bloated, over-conceptualised rottage for the monkey man. He gets in, does what he has to do, gets out. From the opener, "Noctuary," with itis creepy stoned-Hammer feel, through the headnod sitar-funk of "Flutter," on into the Rhodes-meets-Gamelan of "D Song," the first third of the record sets out the tone for what is to follow n all beautfiully melodic and perfectly assembled but with enough of a creeping undertow to stop the music becoming empty or saccharine. "Change Down" is all double bass folk and cut-up drums, "Wayward Bob" is a devilish waltz, while single "Pick Up" is a straight funk eni flute throw down. "Something For Windy"sounds like a dub of a postman on his rounds, "Nothing Owed" is epic pastoralia, while "Light Pattern" rounds things off with what sounds like the theme to the best TV programme never made. With all instruments played, sampled and sequenced by Greenis own fair hand, there is a consistency here, both within the tunes and across the record that crate diggers can only dream of. There is real development, the building of moods and feelings, a genuine attempt to make great music which is incidentally computer music. He may make a monkey of himself, but heis no musical mugOe

"Anyone who thinks 'jazz' is a dirty word should be forced to listen to Chris Bowden, he is jazz for the next generation" - The Wire These sentiments reverberate when engaging Chris Bowden's groundbreaking new release, 'Slightly Askew'. This fresh and eclectic album displays BowdenIs powerful playing, awe-inspiring imagination and unique way with a string arrangement on a extraordinary adventure that draws on elements of Jazz Fusion, Latin Jazz, Classical, Soul, Funk, Big Band and Broken Beats. Angular harmonies contrast the soul like passages, impressionistic and rich toned strings counteract the serious drum InI bass and funk elements while the tempo changes act as catalyst for his rhythmically compelling and harmonically rich artistry. Having emerged from the acid jazz boom, Bowden has since risen to wide critical acclaim, performing with Talking Loud's K Creative, James Mason, Doug Karn, Basement Jaxx and as a member of The Herbaliser whos "Something Wicked This Way Comes" is currently delighting the press corps. In 1996, his group and self-titled album ITime CapsuleI heralded crossover success for Chris Bowden, establishing him as an artist in his own right. He lent his considerable arranging talents to 4Hero who repaid the favour by remixing his first outing on Ninja Tune, the 12" 'Beautiful Nasty' - a swinging, complex funky breakbeat combined with mournful double bass, angular string lines and a typically compact and soulful sax solo. This vinyl only release was given the full Ninja treatment and carried Chris' unique take on jazz into the hip, dance and mainstream press. 'Slightly Askew' continues the theme, and Bowden's distinctive 'take no prisoners' approach is evident all over this multidimensional album. Only four tracks long, yes four, and each track lasting an average of nineteen minutes, the trademark sonic sculptures of 'Time Capsule' are still there - four epic studies in harmony and counterpoint whose themes are deconstructed to their minimalist origins before mutating into something wholly new. Only Angst kicks in like 100mg of adrenalin, a mad brash big band sound dropping in samples and screaming horn solos, forcing us to examine the preconceptions of our musical reference. ItIs a hypnotic swirl of brass and beats resemblant of Art Ensemble of Chicago that speeds around the bloodstream, oscillating between confusion and amazing clarity. With broken beats, mesmerising vocals and an unusual 13/4 time signature, Crockers & Killers is the album's stylistic signature tune - an immense collage of heroic horn lines, rich toned strings and delicate piano stylings. The impressionistic use of strings (not dissimilar to classical chamber music), the myriad tempos, haunting bass lines and bold mixing of brass and woodwind provide the perfect backdrop to soulful vocals. The samples and sequences simply enhance what's there already. Similarly, Bowden somewhat sparingly takes to his saxophone to embellish a phrase, but his virtuosity is ever-present. On ZOO ZOO Andy Hamill and Tom Gordon lay down a 70's space funk vibe, a slow jam tempo and a fat drum break. Harmonically complex, with an awesome slap bass - if it were any deeper he'd be underground - Bowden creates a soundtrack feel similar to label mates Cinematic Orchestra in an emergent jigsaw of tone and timbre. W'p De f'n' doo would please the gamut from fans of 'dinnerjazz' to the sweat-soaked dancefloor of Casa Latina. With its cheeky riffs, the funky and upbeat W'p De f'n' doo showcases a more urban raw sound on the sax - Bowden paying homage to jazz hornography - soaring over piano riffs and a hyper drum score, before wormholing out into the future. Playing out this summer Bowden's band has slimmed down somewhat since the 12-piece Time Capsule, but whether as trio, augmented by string quartet or with the full DJ club package, it is one that reinforces his urban and musical idioms and will only enlighten, surprise and delight a listener, from whichever musical continuum they come. For now he has created an album of importance, an album of the year and a musical insight into the future. Opening doorways to new possibilities where before there was only void.

In Gibson's Neuromancer, when Case and Molly meet the two surviving founders of Zion, there is talk of hearing a "mighty dub" in the Babel of tongues signaling the "final days." If indeed we're living in these "end times," as many predict, then there can be no more of an appropriate soundtrack for the coming apocalypse than The Bug's London Zoo.

The Bug is the main project for Kevin Martin, a producer who has headed a diverse range of projects. He is part of Techno Animal, Ice, and God (all with Justin Broadrick of Godflesh and Jesu), King Midas Sound, Razor X Productions (with The Rootsman), Pressure, and Ladybug; runs his Pathological Records label; and has collaborated with noise jazz outfit 16-17, Pete "Sonic Boom" Kemper's E.A.R. project, John Zorn, Kevin Shields, El-P, and the Antipop Consortium. He has recorded for Rephlex, Position Chrome/Mille Plateaux, Word Sound, Hyperdub, City Slang, Tigerbeat 6, Grand Royal, and now Ninja Tune. He has been personally asked to remix Thom Yorke, Grace Jones, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Primal Scream, and compiled jazz and dub compilations for Virgin Records. London Zoo is the fruition of all these activities.

The album was born of three key moments: an introduction to the thriving dubstep scene (of which The Bug is very much a pioneer from before it carried a name) and its key producers (via Kode 9 and Loefah) where Martin realized there were others on the same sonic trajectory as himself; an introduction to Warrior Queen via his work with Wayne Lonesome on the Razor X Productions project; and a Mary Anne Hobbs Breezeblock session which introduced him to Flowdan (Roll Deep) and Ricky Ranking. All three of these figure heavily in the end result and live presentation.

The obvious entry point to the album is the dubstep tag, particularly after the success of the three lead-up singles, but London Zoo clearly reaches past, brings together, and celebrates reference points from dancehall, grime, hip-hop, and noise--it could have only come out of London sound-system culture, while its appeal spans cities and scenes.

From the opening strains of "Angry" (featuring reggae legend Tippa Irie) it's clear that the world has been served notice from the heart of the UK capital. The message is further strengthened as Ranking (best known for his work with Roots Manuva), Flowdan, Warrior Queen, Spaceape, Roger Robinson, Killa P, and Aya step up to lay waste to the boombastic rhythms put before them, eventually culminating in "Judgement" where Ranking leaves us with a prophecy: "So much people are losing their minds, because we're living in a serious time. I guess it come in like a judgment sign, the people have killing on their mind." Living in end times, indeed. Best start building the Marcus Garvey tug now.

There are images being projected directly on to your retina. Your eyes flicker in stop-motion. The street (the street in your eyes) is splattered by heavy rain. One hundred noir film loops flip back and through, occupying your head. You feel yourself accelerating forward... Welcome to the world of 'Motion' a new (and old) type of audio-visual project where your ears create images. Jazz collides with film soundtrack collides with sample culture the future and the past crushed together in a moment outside of time. 'Motion' is beyond category. The easy description is that this is jazz. Except that how many jazz bands have been given a series of samples to riff around, recorded performances and then had those performances re-sampled, shaped and stretched beyond recognition? There are precedents (there are always precedents) in the work of Miles Davis and Teo Macero cutting and splicing reel-to-reel in the seventies but this is taking the process much, much further. Instead of the emphasis being on horn players blowing, J Swinscoe (the sampler, sequencer and tactician behind the project) uses the central pillars of dance culture rhythm and mood to create collective and orchestrated improvisations that never happened. The most important point is to relax and let go. Listen to something both familiar and utterly unfamiliar. See it as you hear it. Your private showing of 'Motion' directed by J Swinscoe is about to commence...

On September 8th 1997 Coldcut released their 4th album, their first on their own label, Ninja Tune. Ninja Tune was born out of a desire to side-step the bullshit of major industry dealings, and over the last seven years the label has continued to expand on the D.I.Y. philosophy that gave it birth. Coldcut, and many others, have waited a long time for this moment to come. From uneasy (b)listening to future-retro space-junk, this is Ninja Tune's most important release ever. Let Us Play. 'Let Us Play' documents the density of the Coldcut project. This is the finished tracklist [and a run-down of collaborators...] Return To Margin: [tablas by Talvin Singh, drum solo by Paul Brook] Atomic Moog: (Post Nuclear Afterlife Lounge Mix) [remix and additional destruction by The Herbaliser, keys solo by Oliver Parfit] More Beats & Pieces: (Daddy Rips It Up mix) [breaks & assistance by Strictly Kev from DJ Food, didgital doings by Jon Voda] Rubaiyat: [drums by Bernard Purdie, bass by Cheyne Towers, sax by Tom Chant, scronk by Gwen Jamois, additional production by Jimpster] Pan Opticon: [vocal samples from The Protest Movement, co-produced with OuterBongolia] Music For No Musicians: Noah's Toilet: [vocals by Salena Saliva, co-produced with Rob Pepperell (Hex)] Space Journey: [keyboards by Jamie Odell ] Timber: [co-produced with Stuart Warren-Hill (Hexstatic)] Every Home A Prison entitled More Beats & Pieces (feat.Jello Biafra) on this CD promo Cloned Again: [vocals by Jello Biafra, beats by Playtime software developed by Hex] I'm Wild About That Thing: [drums by Bernard Purdie, bass by Chene Towers, sax by Tom Chant, flute by Annie Quicke, keyboards by Jamie Odell, scronk by Gwen Jamois, additional production by Steinski] 'Let Us Play' is the heartfelt cry of a generation that rejects being categorised, bought, used or homogenised. Themes that heavily influence the album are the impact of technology on a changing society, and the principles of DIY philosophy and zentertainment. Album comes with free chin, so you don't wear your own out. 'Let us Play' is where you will learn about.... DNA ROM/the Post Human Condition/ synaesthesia/ DJing/ VJing/ sampling/ playtools/remixing/slack/club culture/party political broadcasts/freedom of information/adhocracy/the battle between analogue and digital/'the CON"/ and other things. .... all Mixed by Coldcut. The album also comes with a free CD-Rom that relights the flapping flame of interactivity. Integrate....Interactivate...Rejuvinate..

Game over. Come Again? The epic project entitled 'Let Us Play' is given the infamous Ninja camel regurgitation treatment to accompany VJAMM, the latest audio-visual innovation from the indupitable scientists of stoopid sound. From the blissful meltdown cream massaged into the joints of 'Panopticon' and 'Rubaiyat' by the Irresistible Force and Carl Craig respectively, to the acoustic warblings of Miss Selena Saliva and the Sycophants on 'the Tale of Viginia Epitome' and 'Noah's Toilet', 'Let Us Replay' allows you to relive the thrill of those fast curves and urban shoot-outs - except this time, your passenger seat is filled by the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Shut Up & Dance, J Swinscoe , DJ Lord Faderand many more... The remix project of Coldcut's latest landmark album includes live versions of 'Atomic Moog 2000' recorded at Sonarin Barcelona, and 'Panopticon', recorded in Tokyo. These were the result of a successful tour that saw a unique live show; gone are the days where some sad fucker presses play on his DAT machine and bobs his head. This album allows you to travel on the journey of progressive music, where perhaps a track is never finally finished - it just mutates with the continuous flux of change... From the dancefloor pressure of Cornelius' 'Atomic Moog 2000' & Shut Up & Dance's chilling reworking of 'Every Home a Prison' featuring Jello Biafra - to the classic ninja style cut-ups of 'More Beats & Pieces'(turntable version) and 'Last Night a Cliche Saved My Life', feat. DJ Food and the legend Grandmaster Flash - 'Let Us Replay' will have you hitting the restart button again, and again, and.........

1893. Chicago. The World's Fair to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America opens. In the entourage of one Nikola Tesla, the renegade pioneer of modern electricity, travels Alfred Darlington, a young inventor from Los Angeles.

On the second day of the fair, Darlington is electrocuted in a terrible accident, pronounced dead, and taken to the morgue. Two days later, an attendant there hears knocking from one of the corpse drawers. Armed with a shotgun and whiskey, he finds the young Darlington not only alive and well but babbling about future worlds he has visited and asking that everyone now calls him "Daedelus."

Tesla, both relieved that the boy has survived and embarrassed by the accident, allows him the run of his workshops. Over the next six months of the Fair, he devotes his time to building strange electronic instruments, and on the very last night of the Fair presents the Love To Make Music To Symphony, which, he claims, is the sound he heard in the future.

The events of the performance are shrouded in secrecy--widely believed to be a result of a cover-up by government and the vested commercial interests who had most to gain from the Fair's success. The few reports which have filtered out say that people go mad as they listen to the strange, alien sounds the young composer describes as "music," that they scream, laugh, pull off their clothes, have sex with each other and themselves, fall into reveries, and shout of "the hills, the beautiful hills." Daedelus himself is dragged from the stage and detained indefinitely in a mental hospital in Chicago, staying there until his mysterious disappearance on May 29, 1913, incidentally the night of the riots in Paris at the first performance of Stravinsky's Rites of Spring.

But for another twist, the story would have ended there. Dr. John Thompsock of the Chicago Ultra-Arts & Science-Head Institute and one of the greatest living Tesla-ologists, was lucky enough to obtain a cache of Tesla's papers from a shadowy Eastern European in 1999. In among them he finds a cylinder disk. On playing it, he discovers that it contains the only recording made of Daedelus' first and last performance.

Digitized, cleaned of crackles and pops, and shorn of 45 minutes of detuned primitive oscillator noise, it as strange as the day it was first performed and as liable to bring on what one can only describe as "sexual fever." To ease the listener through--and hopefully hold the fever at bay--this version features commentary from a number of leading scientists including Om'mas Keith and Taz of the Sa-Ra Foundation, plus Dr. Michael Johnson, Prof. N'fa, Paperboy (Mphil), Dr. Erika Rose, and Prof. Laura Darling (of The Long Lost Institute). Of more than academic interest, this will appeal to all aficionados of Very Very Late Victorian Music.

In the book of funkjazztickle tricknology, it is written that ALL things taste stealthy, as long as your psychedeli-diet is balanced across the board. if Variety is the Spice of life, welcome to a veritable vindaloo, a firing falafel, a tumpin tortilla of tunes with fat funky fillings and whirld-wide flavas ...Dj FOOD serves ya wid a "RECIPE FOR DISASTER". In his contekstual growth from child to adult, DJ FOOD has suffered a hifi-dentity crisis; in earlier years he was branded as a compilation of breaks and grooves, a mere quick-stop take-away on Hip-Hop-high street;but no longer, for da froot has grown from the root of his yoot', and yes, now, the menu has changed. Sole food sustenance and ghetto-pasta, as prepared by meisterchefs PC and tha bruthas Coldcut. Getting down to the 'art of the Platter... Can we offer you some ruffage? 'Spiral" is a deep dish of dancefloor hiphopnotism where blood-red beetz predominate the flava, whilst 'Inosan' caters for those who like their food moody - a perfeck puree of pumping parsnip-hop. 'Scratch Yer Head' and 'Scratch Yer Butt" are simply pasta-pieces of the hip and the hop; forget pitch-control, this is a lesson in itch-control. If it burns, sk-skr--skratch it.Baaaaad. Perchance your inner palate calls for a more funky traditional dish, like the jungle-splashed 'Akaire' or 'Brass Neck', served with a garnish of horny horns and crunchy breaks; perhaps you require a snack before bed-time, in which we recommend the lush milky chords of 'Dark River' or 'The Dusk', a deli-cate creme of moon soup. If break-fast is the order of the day, try a bite of the Latin-flavoured "Half-Step", or 'A Little Samba',that slips down the throat of your ears like buttered B-b'oysters. And just desserts, for tha flava of tha month; taste the exquisite 'Fungle Junk', a ripe, hype slice of jungle funk made with fresh f'roots from the bassssket. Food to make you healthy in body, wealthy in behind, and stealthy in spirit. And if ya can't stand the beatz, git out tha kitchen...... A "Recipe for Disaster" - available in a Stealth-food shop near you soon.

Allo? Alright mate? D'you'z wanna remix my record? Welcome to 1996. N'aa, man. Remixes are so boring, just abismal. Where's the innovation, where's the originality? Flying in the face of fashion with a large and upturned middle finja, Ninja Tune welcome you to an album of remixes. Just the same ole shit, refried...... Get a life, sucka. Eat this.REFRIED FOOD, THA ALBUM..... so what makes this cut any diff'rent from the spate of remixes that pour from the nation's most hidden hole? Possibly that the finest artists in the most upfront scene in the world have chosen their favourite tracks from the entire DJ Food series, a back-catalogue of six years worth of experimentation without compromise? Possibly that the result is simply tha most shocking thang you've ever heard ever, ever? We could talk about the music but ev'ry track is so bloody different and so bloody good that there's no point, really. Just put the fugger on and let your ears do the rest as your jaw drops to the floor in astonishment at the variety of spice provided. New re-workings from Squarepusher, Dr. Rockit, Wagon Christ, Tongue & Groove, Skint, Vadim and DJ Food himself. Classic remixes from Fila Brazilia, Autechre, Ashley Beedle, M.L.O. The vinyl of Refried food will be cut on six 12"s released in pairs, two of which have been previously released as limited editions. The 12"s will include extra tracks from Lemon D, the Jeep Beat Collective, Neotropic, Dr. Jam and Mr. Scruff as well as the Black Devil mix of Inosan, cut in two halves on separate slabs of wax for extra mixability. ***Hip-hop, breakbeats, reggae, drum'n'bass, electronica...the sounds packed into this first full-length studio album shouldn't surprise those who know what to expect from DJ Kentaro but even when looking at the broad spectrum of dance music in current you'd be pressed to find an album more balanced in all directions, crossing over musical boundaries without sounding forced. It is exactly the message expressed at the 2002 DMC finals of 'No Walls Between The Music' all concentrated and materialised into one album, and the collaborations on the record add to the expanse of Enter.

All the artists featured on the album are artists Kentaro has played with in the numerous events, live shows and tours he has performed at over the years and the hand-picked lineup is bound to bring a grin to many faces. One of the acts responsible for the new school movement in hip-hop in the 90s and still going strong today, Pharcyde. The Baltimore bred group on everyone's lips after releasing their debut album YoYoYoYoYo from Ninja sub-label Big Dada in 2006, Spank Rock. Veterans in the UK hip-hop scene after releasing 3 albums also on Big Dada, New Flesh. Leader of the Cincinatti hip-hop crew Five Deez and receiving just as much, if not more, praise for his solo works, producer/MC, Fat Jon.

Having such respected and skilled artists from around the world on one record is in itself a delight but the way all 4 artists ride and harmoniously fit DJ Kentaro's sound is a ride in itself. On the Japanese side are 3 sets of artists all with strong ties to Kentaro - while always laying their roots in the reggae/dub scene a band that continues to expand its horizons musically, Little Tempo. Creating a genre themselves by doing what they do with an MPC and a turntable before anyone else in the world, now on their way to becoming world renown, Hifana. The MC with the most original and absorbing style Japan has to offer, Hunger from the hip-hop group Gagle.

While all 3 tracks are of a totally different nature, Kentaro manages to give them all a certain touch that makes them distinctively a similar colour. As a fellow japanese, I can't help but be happy that their sound will now be known to the world through Ninja Tune.

But it's not only the tracks with guest vocalists that make up the album-- the instrumental tracks on the album are just as, if not more, expressive of Kentaro's musically liberated nature and they can be said to be the driving force of Enter. Each track was carefully crafted to stir the imagination, and the length to which they show the richness of Kentaro's expression will without a doubt leave a lasting impression on everyone that comes across it. Most of the tracks were also mixed by DJ Kentaro himself (half were done together with Alan Mawdsley, a mix engineer that mixes many of Ninja Tune artists) and his acute sound sensibility is also an aspect to check on the album.

How much influence will Enter have on the dance music scene the world over? And how will that influence reflect back to DJ Kentaro Questions I ask myself like this only make me restless waiting for the release date..2007, the year that will always be remembered as the year DJ Kentaro entered your world.

***RUSH RELEASE!!! Outside of his homeland, DJ KENTARO is thought of mainly as a former DMC World Champion, but back in Japan they know there's much more to him than some fancy scratches. Which is why his latest material has not a crab or flare in sight and instead focuses on showing us the man's considerable production chops and flare for a tune. Ninja Tune are pleased to release the Free single. Recorded in one long, drunken and wild session with Baltimore filth-maestros SPANK ROCK while they toured Japan, the result is a low-slung funk classic. Giant handclaps, lascivious bass, backing vox from DJ team RONNIE DARKO and CHRIS ROCKSWELL, it's all there. And if that isn't quite enough, the group's production messiah, XXXCHANGE, weighs in with a heavy remix. Limited to 200 copies in the US. Beautifully packaged as you'd expect.

The Russian Prince of Turntables comes true with his second long-player, emphasising his brilliance as a hip-hop producer. A large rappertoire of performers queue to lay silky vocal skills over the immense selection of beats and soundscapes emerging from Vadim's imagination. The list of performers guesting on this long-player reads like a dream-team of talent, from outstanding tracks from the likes of the brilliant Sarah Jones and Blade, genre classics such as the track featuring Motion Man, Mucho Muchacho laying down a track in Spanish to older Vadim runners such as A-side, and others such as Iriscience & DJ Primecuts, Swollen Members, Blurum... the list goes on. Vadim's skill as a producer is second-to-none, coaxing the best out of his artists as he bids us travel deeper into that exclusive territory where his mind meets his extensive record collection, and deep beats grace funky samples. Vadim is truly a producer in his own class, taking you to places no hip-hopper has taken you before; in Vadim's hands, the listening experience has moved from head-nodding to spine-tingling. Check tracks like 'The Terrorist' for hip-hop at its very best. Vads is one of the prime exponents of the cut-up pastiche. Not least on the menu are the various skits laced through the meal, where the DJ's interest in the obscure keeps the groove moving more like a film laced with adverts, the skits acting as a humorous refrain from the intensity of the music. Like '3 feet high and Rising', 'Life from the Other Side' may cross that boundary few hip-hop plates have crossed, where sheer brilliance and musical genius combine to make the genre accessible to those whom hip-hop passes by. Warning - this album also features an alarming number of Clangers...
