***Jo Apps has been in our lives for years. She was the angelic voice provoking us, 'Keep jumping, you bastards!' on Venetian Snares' classic track 'Dance Like You're Selling Nails'. Then she graced Capitol K, playing bass for a year or two. Some fans know her as the sister of Patrick Wolf, but we wanted her solo material, for it is skillfully crafted, unique and simply breathtaking. So at long last here it is, the debut single from Jo Apps, former sound design student of the Guildhall School of Music and old skool Londontown electronica goddess. This will be the first in a long line of historic tweakage from the dear lady.

***The A-side of Benga's debut for Planet Mu, "Comb 60S," provides dance floor devastation in the shape of deep, hollow sub bass, spine-tingling stabs and jaunty pizzicato breakdowns. "Killers About" meanwhile sustains the paranoia of a dangerous chase scene with '70s electric piano riffs, '80s electro percussion, and a contemporary twisting bass line.

Artist: BIZZY B Title: Science Vol. 3 & 4

***Bizzy B's follow up to the 1993/94 volumes one and two on Whitehouse Records brings the old-skool sound of hardcore jungle into the new millennium.

"Darkside" and "Afraid Of The Dark" both use "Amen" and "Mentasm" to awesome effect-- the catchiness of the stabs and riffs just won't let go, and the breaks are propulsive. But this time the undertow of sub-bass catches listeners unaware.

Deep dub waters. Both tracks are being played by Andy C and Bailey. For "Merda Style 2004," Bizzy B pairs up with Equinox (Bassbin, Inperspective, Intasound), bringing the 1993 original up to date with tearing "Acid Rain"-style Amens and deep 808 bass kicks. Currently being rinsed. "Fire" is another deep, bass-y, pitched-down Amen killer with evil, distorted bass stabs that rip any system. Currently being rinsed. "Deep In My Soul" combines soulful female vocals with dub FX and the ubiquitous break; "Strength" has a more jump-up flavor, still retaining the old-skool feel with "Mentasm" and "Outlander" stabs. Currently being rinsed.

Bizzy B (Brain / Joker / Sub Base / Whitehouse) was there from day one playing the raves and on the radio (Centerforce, Fantasy, Kool FM, Conflict). He's been releasing records since 1991 and set up one of the most influential hardcore / jungle labels, Brain, which also released the debut material of Peshay, Zinc, and Marc Caro (Technical Itch), among others.

***Bizzy B continues his journey into the darkside with four brand new tracks and the fifth installment of his Science EP series. Lead track "Jah Works" devastates dancefloors with its sub-bass depth charges and savage amen, lightened up with a dose of sweet dub vocals before crashing back in with Bizzy's famous edits and some choice rave stabs. "Sound Test" surprises with a little Soca guitar riff, while "Flava" brings some G-funk synth into the equation. The closer, "Exceeding The Speed of Sound," beefs up the classic Bizzy sound to round out a nicely varied set.

Lead track "Creation" twists amen and mentasm together into an Escher-like contorted riff while an MC exhorts "When the crowd says rewind!" and "Bizzy B!" before it recedes into a dub interlude. The track "Deep, Dark and Nastie" is just that. "Bless This Sound," with Equinox and edits by blast-from-the-past T.D.K., features the heaviest amen ever created. Science EP Vol. 6 is rounded out with "2099 Dub," a reprise of "1099 Dub," originally rinsed on dub back in '94.

***Barry Lynn returns for album number two on Mu. Continuing his hugely successful trademark dubstep/electronica sound from the 2006 album Oneiric, Lynn ups the ante and Glyphic certainly delivers. From the opening title track, Boxcutter's totally unique sound excels. Floating pads and astral jazz samples sit above deep dub basses, with all manner of instruments thrown into the mix, resulting in a beautiful noise throughout. He pursues dubstep with "Bug Octet" and the dub inflected "J Dub," and break orientated electronica with "Kaleid" and "Fieldtrip." With the outstanding "Foxy" he blends deep bass, soulful organ and vocals with soaring pads and an infectious 2-Step Garage skippy break.

Boxcutter is an artist who pushes the dubstep sound to a new level while keeping the dub roots of the music firmly intact, injecting a truly unique flavour to everything he produces. Another huge album from Northern Ireland's biggest and best Dubstep producer.

***Guitarist and producer Barry Lynn (aka Boxcutter) became the talk of the dubstep scene in 2005 with the release of his astounding "Brood/Sunshine" single on London's taste-making dance label, Hot Flush. On his second release, Tauhid, Lynn continues to revolutionize the garage and breaks sound with a fresh mix of fractured breaks, Eastern inflections and a deep dub sensibility.

The title track is a micro-symphony of writhing bass, FX-laden guitars and blurry half-step rhythms that quickly devolve into pure breakbeat abstraction. Other tracks, like "Silver Birch Solstice," harken back to the two-step garage craze of a few years ago. With heavy rotation from influential DJs like Ras Kwame, One World and Breezeblock, Boxcutter comes into 2006 as one of the hottest dance artists around.

Although I don't claim to hear a huge amount of unreleased material... I do get to hear quite a few interesting things. Most of it is very good but nothing could quite prepare me for... Ulster-based Barry Lynn... Listening to "Brood," I was completely floored by the production levels and emotional intensity. I realized immediately that here was the real deal... a fully-formed talent who needed exposure immediately. --Gutterbreakz.com

***Here's the first time Ceephax appears on Planet Mu.

Ceephax is Andy Jenkinson (from Chelmsford in Essex). He did wicked acid releases on EDMX's Breakin' and some more acid and ravey pieces on First Cask (the Belgian label) plus a recent album on Rephlex. The first track here is a sort of hardcore roller with trippy synths, dubby bass and an embarrassing interlude. 'Friend Track' is 'emo acid'. Again, quite trippy.

On the other side we have 'Time Tunnel': this one has what sounds like a 909 plus the Amen break (unmistakable), some 303 and is the possessor of a charming melody of neither the major nor minor persuasion. Castilian (last track) is one of those*IDM video game thingys that people will love. It builds up and up with chords and notes and shit into this massive hands in the air anthem. Enjoy!

***In 2007, Oris Jay's influence has never been more powerful. Over the last decade, his dark sound revolutionized the UK garage and breaks scenes and laid the foundations for 21st century dubstep. Tunes like "Said the Spider" and "Raisin' Kane" cemented his reputation as a garage master and creator of an influential sound all his own. This is the boy who wrote the book.

Following the revitalization of his label Texture last year, Jay has supplied Planet Mu with two hot tunes which have been supported on dub in recent months. "Maximum Reespek" has a melody that circles 'round your head and the heaviest of breaks, while the flip "Ghost Not Memory" revives the skippiness of 2-Step Garage with the added menacing bass of '07.

There are lovers of Jay's beats everywhere-- Mary Anne Hobbs and Plastician from BBC Radio 1; dubstep DJs Skream, Loefah, Distance, and Pinch; breaks boys Stanton Warriors, BLIM, Freq Nasty and Aquasky; broken beat kings Dego (4 Hero), Charlie Dark (Attica Blues) and Bugz in the Attic; 2-step names MJ Cole, Pay As U Go, and Heartless Crew; and more. He had a UK Top-40 hit with his tune "Trippin'," collaborated with everyone from Ms Dynamite to Rodney P, and has released records on labels including Polydor, Tectonic, EMI, Bingo, Storming Productions, and Hospital Records.

***The Doubtful Guest's debut album ushers in a new era of acid. Gone are the electro party jams, gone is the funky squiggle. This dark, suffocating stuff is full of nightmares and claustrophobic details that send shivers up one's spine. References include Coil, Marc Acardipane, Scott Brown, and Neophyte. Not afraid to show her classical upbringing (she trained as an opera singer) and jazz heritage (granddaughter of J.B. Floyd), Libby Floyd infuses the rave sound with doom and dread. Inducing panic on the dancefloor, cuts like the eleven-minute "Slaves" build into writhing acid anthems that ebb and flow like some viscous substance in your mind.

If you thought the Planet Mu offices were exclusively awash with testosterone, then The Doubtful Guest is here to subvert your notions, as Libby Floyd rattles into town on a train of electronic giddiness that will have you reaching for the vodka and Anadin.... Not quite as frenetic as you might expect, The Doubtful Guest is riddled with electronic potholes that jar the ears in a manner that is wholly welcome. --Boomkat

Artist: EXILE Title: Pro Agonist
Format: 2x12" Catalog
Number:
ZIQ116
Price: $17.50 Label: Planet Mu
Release
Date:
4/3/06
***2005is druminibass masterpiece, Pro Agonist, announced Tim Exileis intention to stamp out generic dinib and bring more quirkiness to the electronic music scene. This abbreviated vinyl edition, featuring two brand-new exclusive tracks, delivers yet another blow to the status quo.

Initiated into the realms of the broken beat at the tender age of twelve, Exile discovered a path he loved so much that his age has more than doubled without one deviation from the route (which has embraced leading orchestras, directing choirs and composing scores for television).

Genre-transcending versatility has helped Exile earn a Masteris in electroacoustic composition, claim prizes in international competitions, and rustle up the kind of twisted druminibass that wipes the floor with punters and savvy journalists alike. With upcoming releases on labels including Cristian Vogelis experimental techno imprint Mosquito, jungle hellraisers Evol Intent, longtime supporters Beta Recordings and Ram offshoot Frequency, Exile shows no signs of slowing down in 2006.

Artist: EXILE Title: Pro Agonist
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
ZIQ116CD
Price: $13.00 Label: Planet Mu
Release
Date:
7/11/05
***Not content to merely leave listeners open-jawed, Tim Exile has created a drum'n'bass masterpiece that brings in all his influences-- from electroacoustic composition to his own little choirboy voice. Pro Agonist defies categorization while leaving listeners completely fulfilled. Initiated into the realms of the broken beat at the tender age of 12 by a tape from a friend's older brother, Exile found a path he loved so much that his age has more than doubled without once deviating from the route (which embraces leading orchestras and choirs and composing title themes and scores for TV shows). Exile's genre-transcending versatility helped earn a Master's in electroacoustic composition, claim prizes in international competitions, and rustle up the kind of twisted drum'n'bass that has wiped the floor with punters and savvy journalists alike.

Eager to increase his dancefloor mastery, Exile has also collaborated with DJ and MC Temper D (Renegade Hardware, G2) to create addictive, pounding, relentless d'n'b, and worked with John B on many occasions, united in the quest to stamp out generic d'n'b and bring more quirkiness to the electronic scene. His King Shredda / Spanner In The WorX single on Ram/Frequency acquired two 5-star Single of the Month ratings in DJ and Knowledge magazines. His site-specific composition for the temporary exhibition Shhh! won a prestigious competition run by the V&A Museum in London. Labels ranging from Cristian Vogel's experimental techno imprint Mosquito, US edit jungle hellraisers Evol Intent, Exile's long-time home Beta Recordings and Ram offshoot Frequency all plan on releasing Exile titles in 2005.

Artist: EXILE, TIM Title: Tim Exile's Nuisance Gabbaret Lounge
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
ZIQ152
Price: $13.00 Label: Planet Mu
Release
Date:
7/10/06
***Sprouting like steroid bamboo from Tim Exileis hectic live calendar, this album is arguably the first ever rave megablast culled entirely from a live improvised performances. Exile has been achieving renown of late for inventing, manufacturing and programming a machine designed specifically to inspire improvised dance lunacy on stage. This gadget, along with Exileis hi-energy, provocative performance style, has created a high demand for Exileis live show.

Tim Exileis Nuisance Gabbaret Lounge follows last yearis high-note album Pro + Agonist which received showers of praise from journalists all over the world. Pro + Agonist provided the bridge between Exileis earlier, pivotal drumini bass releases on labels like Moving Shadow, Beta, Ram and Mosquito and his then burgeoning live show. Now the Nuisance Gabbaret Lounge takes an acrobatic leap into the uncharted future of live electronic performance. The voodoo effigy of the DJ is burnt and the punters are immersed in a sea of punk attitude, cabaret antics and hectic beats, all cooked up on a mosh plate in front of your very eyes.

Artist: FANE, JULIAN Title: Our New Quarters
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
ZIQ161
Price: $13.00 Label: Planet Mu
Release
Date:
2/19/07
***Our New Quarters is Vancouver-based electro-pop musician Julian Fane's second album for Planet Mu and a follow-up to his widely-acclaimed 2004 release Special Forces. Fane's new pieces are grounded in live percussion, great swaths of strings, indecipherable high-pitched vocals and lush, sweeping synth effects. These elements, along with a strengthened vocal presence, give the music a powerful emotional core. The album wallows deliciously in vast, guitar-laden melancholy, and certain tracks, "The Moon Is Gone," for instance, achieve a pristine beauty almost classical in tone.

30-second MP3 excerpts:

Our New Quarters
New Faces
Youth Cadet
The Moon Is Gone
Downfall
Jonah The Freak
Break And Enter

Release
Date:
10/8/07
***Frog Pocket (a.k.a. John Charles Wilson) returns for his second album on Planet Mu. Come On Primates! is a tentative, truly original exploration. Hearing the mix of electronica and noise with folk influences, it's easy to imagine the dramatic Ayr landscape that inspires this album-- although it's not all wistful beauty.

With tracks such as "Corn Na Gaeth" employing heavy electronic drums, and "Dungeon Hills," a huge and looming masterpiece full of gnawing strings and beats, the album gently guides the listener on a beautiful sonic journey. An accomplished violinist as well as the artist who created the piece on the cover, Frog Pocket inspires with his creativity, making Come On Primates! set to be one of the electronica albums of the year.

Artist: FROG POCKET Title: Gonglot
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
ZIQ097CD
Price: $13.00 Label: Planet Mu
Release
Date:
7/25/05
***Frog Pocket, aka John Charles Wilson, hails from Ayr in the west of Scotland. Gonglot, his debut full length album, features songs culled from between 1999 and 2005, many originally self-released on his own Mouthmoth label. Incorporating unquantized drum beats with fiddle, mandolin, processed guitar and vocals-- all recorded live to four-track-- Frog Pocket has maintained his credibility both as a Scottish musician and contemporary electronic performer. The folk-inflected melodies of Gonglot owe more to Celtic traditional music than the American folk-rock/electronic crossover currently in vogue. Its pastoral theme has a tradition in electronic music running back through Boards Of Canada to Aphex Twin and originally Ultramarine.

Frog Pocket is a regular on the live circuit and his dedication to performance and networking with other artists and labels led to a friendship with Mike Paradinas at Planet Mu. The label released the single "Fir Faas" in 2003 and worked closely with Wilson compiling the tracks for this full length release.

To know the music is to love the man, and his quirky, somewhat misinterpreted demeanor only adds to his mystique. The fractured AFX-like beats, alongside some truly beautiful melodies and such an energetic live act, sit at odds with a character so unassuming and modest.

Artist: GASMAN Title: Audiogold
Format: CD Catalog

Price: $13.00 Label: Planet Mu
Release
Date:

***The Gasman returns for his fourth album on Planet Mu, and as the name suggests, Audiogold contains nothing but the finest collection of aural stimuli. Blending dreamlike synths with discordant undertones and processed beats, but also adding elements of acid and electro it is a noticeable progression.

The Gasman pushes the envelope of melodic IDM composition with Audiogold, whilst still retaining his trademark "Gaylord" sound, somewhere between a haunted 19th century ballroom and an early 90s rave.
