***A fine-time collection of previously unreleased material from Bay Area power-pop and rock exciters the ACTION SLACKS. Artist: BRIGHT EYES / BRITT DANIEL Title: Home Vol. 4
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
PP020CD
Price: $9.50 Label: Post-Parlo
Release
Date:
3/22/04
***Because of its limited edition first pressing and the high profile of the contributors Bright Eyes and Spoon singer/songwriter Britt Daniel, Home Volume IV was one of the most talked-about releases of 2002. Released the month before highly anticipated releases by each artists (Bright Eyes' Lifted, or the Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground; and Spoon's Kill the Moonlight), fans pounced on the 2,000 copies available. Before long, copies appeared on eBay and went for about twenty bucks each, eventually reaching $75. This rerelease (in a jewel case) will stay in print indefinitely. With both Spoon and Bright Eyes working on new releases, this fabled classic should tide over fans of both artists.

"[Britt] Daniel's metallic guitar ... [alternates] between sparse plucking and jagged strums ... [a] direct and terse style ... [that is] a sharp contrast to Oberst's slow, unfolding allegories.... [S]imple, banged-out riffs burst with ecstatic energy.... The disc closes out with the simple, highly compelling co-write "Let the Distance Bring Us Together." Daniel handles vocals here ... with a voice that wavers between the hum of a power saw and a slick, quiet falsetto ... softly slurring words over a swollen tongue. The lyrics drag the song, unquestionably the highlight of the record, across the smooth sawdust floor of a Texas bar as Daniel subtly changes his pitch and tempo." --Brandon Wall, Pitchfork

Artist: ESKIMO KISSES Title: Eskimo Kisses
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
PPR301CD
Price: $8.25 Label: Post-Parlo
Release
Date:
2/2/04
***Eskimo Kisses is the best indie rock/ punk band to come out of Texas since Spoon, Sixteen Deluxe, and Sincola, and they're continuing to raise the bar for what smart rock bands are going to be in the future. Their self-titled debut CD EP shows a harder, more textural side to bands like the Pixies and Sleater-Kinney. Live, they bring the power of a great punk band coupled with the sound of a great indie rock band, while on record they add a calculated complexity that is oh-so-rare in the "rock" world today.

Artist: FALL ON DEAF EARS Title: Fall On Deaf Ears
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
PPR016CD
Price: $8.25 Label: Post-Parlo
Release
Date:
4/22/02
***Fall on Deaf Ears was Laura Beard, Clint Newsom, Sarah Reiser and Cedric Bixler. Following the completion of this recording Beard and Reiser were tragically killed in an auto accident on their way home to El Paso. Bixler went on to form At the Drive-In and more recently Mars Volta. The 5 Songs on this EP are the only ones ever recorded by the band, and are a lasting snapshot of the West Texas hardcore scene of the mid-90's.

Artist: GIBBARD, BENJAMIN / KENNY, ANDREW Title: Home Vol. 5 - Split
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
PPR018CD
Price: $9.50 Label: Post-Parlo
Release
Date:
8/25/03
***Volume 5 in Post-Parlo's ongoing Home series of split songwriter CDs features BENJAMIN GIBBARD of DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE and POSTAL SERVICE and ANDREW KENNY of AMERICAN ANALOG SET. Over the course of this 8-song release, Gibbard and Kenny explore the concept of "home" from the inside out. Both songwriters spend way too much of their lives on tour, playing to hundreds and thousands of new faces every night, so when the opportunity to include the two in the HOME series came up, it was impossible to resist. Three of Gibbard's four offerings are new songs recorded in late 2002 and early 2003, with the fourth being a cover of AmAnSet's "Choir Vandals" (Know By Heart, 2002). Kenny went a bit deeper in his vault of musical gems and included the first song he ever wrote ("Hometown Fantasy") as well as two brand new compositions and a cover of DCFC's "Line of Best Fit" (Something About Airplanes, 1998).

Artist: OLIVE GROUP Title: Blue
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
PPR501CD
Price: $8.25 Label: Post-Parlo
Release
Date:
2/2/04
****The Olive Group rises from the remains of Temple, Texas indie rockers Le Venga Del Toro. Their new project shows a more mature and comfortable band over the course of their debut EP, "Blue". Incorporating the best parts of jazz-influenced bands like Sea and Cake and American Football alongside straight up indie popsters Aden and Dressy Bessy, The Olive Group is a band that has been sorely needed by the stale pop music climate for far too long.

Artist: SUBSET Title: Overpass
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
PPR601CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Post-Parlo
Release
Date:
2/2/04
***Austin, TX rock / pop favorites Subset have been producing some of the most potent pop songs of the last decade, since their inception a few short years ago. Originally just a duo (made of Simon and Fish), Subset got the rounding out it needed in Silver Scooter drummer Tom Hudson, who joined the band after seeing the other two play a release show for their debut 7".

Since Hudson joined the band, they've released the best rock album of the year 2000 (their debut LP, Overpass) and shared the stage with some of contemporary indie rock's best (Spoon, Wheat, Centro-Matic, Rock*a*Teens, Solex). It's not hard to hear why the accolades just keep coming either.

Part of Subset's charm is their diversity, which is framed by the dueling lead vocals of Lindsey Simon and Nathan Fish. Writing roughly half of the tracks on Overpass, Simon tends toward more mainstream pop and rock writing, while Fish takes the other end of the spectrum with feedback drenched rockers, and a ballad here and there for good measure. Throw in ex-Silver Scooter drummer Tom Hudson and his extra-tight style of rock drumming, and you've got an unstoppable trio.

Artist: THOSE PEABODYS Title: Those Peabodys
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
PPR901CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Post-Parlo
Release
Date:
2/2/04
***Coupling the tight, pummeling riffs of AC/DC with the high freak-out factor of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Those Peabodys are a rock band that's going to come to your town, rock like you've never been rocked before we're told, and kick all sorts of ass along the way. Their self-titled debut full length on Post-Parlo is a 10-song snapshot of the intersection of punk rock energy, classic rock songwriting, and virtuoso precision. It's an intersection rarely seen, and should be appreciated as such. Recorded by Silver Scooter guitarist/ singer Scott Garred.

Artist: ZYKOS Title: Comedy Horn
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
PPR019CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Post-Parlo
Release
Date:
5/26/03
***The debut album from these talked-about Texas rockers is busting at the seams with minor key sing-alongs that'll haunt and inspire you at the same time. Reminiscent of early David Bowie coupled with the classy punch of Elvis Costello, the band's take on modern rock music is enough to avoid being "retro" and timeless enough to be classic.

Artist: ZYKOS Title: S/T
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
PPR023 CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Post-Parlo
Release
Date:
10/4/04
***It has been 18 months since the release of Zykos' debut Comedy Horn, named one of Texas' best albums of 2003 by the Austin Chronicle. In addition to touring with a diverse group of bands (from Explosions in the Sky to Cursive to TV on the Radio to Okkervil River), chief songwriter Michael Booher spent this time holed up in a variety of Texas locales crafting the skeleton of the album that has become their self-titled sophomore release. The "wall of sound" arrangements of Comedy Horn have been augmented by brighter synth and keys touches on top of even bigger hooks. Their dynamic second effort finds more calm amid the chaos, and manages to be more cohesive without sacrificing any of Zykos' trademark intensity. The band, which lives together in Austin, Texas, takes musical cues ranging from classical arrangements (pianist Catherine Davis is a classically trained piano teacher) to the pseudo-arena rock of The Afghan Whigs and beyond. But any resemblance to other bands of their ilk is torn away with Booher's distinctively raw vocals and the prodding, organic bass lines of Mike Roeder. Having laid a strong foundation with Comedy Horn's 2003 tours, Zykos plans to be on tour throughout the fall of 2004, with no signs of stopping in the near future.
