Points at Infinity is the second collaboration between the UK's most infamous doom/sludge metal band, Atavist, and the most prolific and respected act in experimental/drone/doom/ambient music today, Nadja.

The first collaboration, titled 12012291920/1414101 and released last year through Invada Records (owned by Portishead main songwriter Geoff Barrow), was merely an experiment--one that was actually initiated by Profound Lore Records. This second collaboration presents a sound picture with significantly more substance and depth; while still experimental in nature, Points at Infinity exemplifies growth and expansion by both of these enigmatic bands.

PRAISE FOR 12012291920/1414101: "This collaboration between the UK's Atavist and Canadian doom mongers Nadja is a rare old treat. Across two lengthy pieces, the bands square up to deliver a disc's worth of bottom-heavy sludge and floating drones. Far from being a cold-hearted excursion into dark metal, the resultant pieces are a surprisingly warm blend of distortion, glacial chord changes and nebulous atmospherics. Opening with 'Twentyfour:Sixteen,' the collaborators launch themselves into an unexpectedly melodic domain only to soak up more challenging sonic elements as the piece progresses; by about halfway through you'll hear glistening feedback tones beginning to intrude, and by the time we arrive at the half-hour long second track, 'Twentynine:Thirtyseven,' the bands are bathing their sound in oceans of noise and hollowed-out electronic tones with a distinct emphasis placed on the lowest end of the frequency spectrum. ***With last year's Eater of Birds, Cobalt solidified their standing as one of the strongest forces in the North American black metal scene, unleashing a unique and epic work of avant-war-metal art that turned heads and unhinged jaws. What's more, it was the first extreme metal album to feature an appearance by ex-Swans singer Jarboe.

Their blood flowing strong, the Colorado duo builds anticipation for their next full-length with this limited-edition stopgap release, a glorified EP entitled Landfill Breastmilk Beast. Clocking in at over 50 minutes, the four-song CD previews new and exclusive Cobalt material-- most notably the "Ritual Use of Fire" track in its entirety. Initially broken up into three acoustic interludes on Eater of Birds, the complete version of "Ritual Use of Fire" is an epic 35+ minute atmospheric/ambient journey through a landscape of desolation, loneliness, and desperation.

Landfill Breastmilk Beast also includes a new Cobalt track, "Stomach," which will appear on the full-length due out in 2009, a cover of "Extinction" by crust punk anarchists Nausea, and a hidden experimental track.

***It was only a matter of time before Indianapolis, Indiana's The Gates of Slumber gained recognition as one of the most prominent true doom/heavy metal acts in the country. Spawned in the late '90s, the band emerged in 2004 after several demos with their debut, The Awakening, a breath of fresh air in the metal underground. The album harnessed their influences-- Black Sabbath, Pentagram, St. Vitus, Cirith Ungol, Rainbow, Thin Lizzy-- as a solid foundation for their sound. Its follow-up, Suffer No Guilt, was hailed as one of the best albums of its kind to come out in 2006.

With The Gates of Slumber securing a North American label for the first time, the much-anticipated Conqueror is the band's first album released domestically--and rightfully so, as it is their most accomplished, tight, and focused to date. Recognized as one of the most virtuosic guitar wizards today, Mick Barr displays his awe-inspiring six-string histrionics in such bizarre outfits as Ocrilim (Hydra Head) and Orthrelm (Ipecac), bending and stretching the rules of modern-day playing and giving new meaning to progressive guitar-work. Nonetheless, Barr (who has also collaborated with the likes of John Zorn and Mike Patton) is quite the enigma today.

Colin Marston, one of the most prolific and recognized musicians in technical / extreme progressive metal, also boasts an impressive pedigree, having played in Behold... The Arctopus (Black Market/Metal Blade), Dysrhythmia (Relapse), Byla, etc., as well as founded his own recording studio, Thousand Caves (in which he recently recorded the latest Jarboe solo album).

On their self-titled debut, Krallice treads the musical landscape familiar to Barr and Marston, but this time the pair translates it into a visceral, tremolo-layered black metal monolith. Comprised of six epic, time-stretching hymns, the album is a vitriolic and hypnotizing assault on the senses that brings to mind early Burzum, Nattens Madrigal-era Ulver, Gorgoroth (Antichrist in particular), and US legends Weakling. Krallice is Barr and Marston's unique vision--singular in the realm of US black metal today.
