****Airplanes Are Better's debut is fraught with undeniably catchy riffs and lyrics that are trapped in a tug-of-war between sincere poignancy and bitter rage. Their sly infusion of pop melodies with aggressive rock exposes their postpunk roots while rendering them hugely accessible. But make no mistake - if these boys were chicken, they'd be the original recipe. Though Power is at once very familiar - Micah Adams' voice is as captivating and desperate as Ian MacKaye's ever was - it is like nothing else you've ever heard. Their complex rhythms and smooth melodies demonstrate the band's penchant for applying original punk ideas to a broader musical spectrum - without compromising their intensity. As Intergalactic Frontline noted, "This EP captures the band's ferocious live sound well and adds a sleek studio veneer over the top to make it super radio-friendly. [Matt Wilkson's] thundering, Bob Weston-like bass lines interact with [Michael Farar's] startling, offtime cymbal crashes at the intersection of screechy guitar melodies and combative vocal harmonies." The newest addition to an impressive list of El Paso area bands garnering national recognition, Airplanes Are Better has managed to completely bypass the copycat phase of most young groups. Power is true, and absolutely proves the purity of the band's creativity and unadulterated aggression. - Touring entire first quarter of 2002
- Ferocious infusion of pop and rock and punk is exceptional, even by El Paso standards
