***Scotty Coats and Wes (the Mes) hail from the sunny shores of Long Beach, California. The two met, as so many musical partners have, while loitering / browsing at the local record shops. After becoming fast friends and production partners only a brief fifteen years later, the duo finally got around to releasing their sun-baked dance music to the public.

First up is the nail-biting punk disco offering, "Double Fisted." The song's speaker-shredding synth line and drunken, chanted chorus is a valiant first stab at the disco dance charts. A year ago, Rong released an extremely limited single-sided pressing of "Double Fisted" exclusively for their favorite record shops. After receiving many disgruntled emails about not being able to find this single after the first week, the label finally made decision to give it a full release along with two equally mental Prins Thomas remixes. The Nordic demigod brings the funky disco beat with his first interpretation of "Double Fisted," while on the flip-side he creates a head-nodding Balearic version that makes one feel a bit like they should be lying in the tall, tall grass watching a liquid gel light show in outer space.

Scotty and Wes have been DJing steadily all over Southern California for the last decade and will soon bring their West Coast good vibes and disco schizophrenia wherever and everywhere else.

***This record is the finale in the three-part 12-inch single project from Brooklyn's Free Blood.

First up is the club-friendly "Parangatang." Broken house beats with increasingly hectic vibes are accompanied by an old-time piano melody as the duo continues their onslaught of head-scratchingly unique pop singles that maintain a fierce rhythmic consistency.

The original is followed by Tummy Touch Records' Tim "Love" Lee's remix. Lee strips away all but the essentials and adds a heady analog synth melody in place of most of the vocals, creating a proper dance dub version.

Finally, Scotty Coats and Wes The Mes offer a punk-funk version of "Weekend Condition" that has risen to the status of "best remix ever made" at Rong's office. Super bad club music with a crafty, superb bass-line to drive it.

All these singles and more comprise the Free Blood debut album to be released the same week as this 12".

***Brooklyn's Free Blood, a band formed in 2003 with roots in the New York art, fashion, and music circles, unleashes their debut album courtesy of Rong Music's and DFA Records' new joint imprint.

Free Blood came together when former !!! member John Pugh and fashion designer Madeline Davy (Octopi NYC) were inspired to unite the divergent settings that host New York's dance and indie music: the Manhattan club scene and the energized modern-day bohemia of Brooklyn warehouse parties that have since hosted many of their sweat-soaked live gigs.

Manhattan and Brooklyn equally embody the spirit of the group-- their music is rooted far enough in the left field to keep all their followers continually enthused, while the tracks, featuring vocals by both Pugh and Davy, are larger-than-life pop songs at heart, driven by the sonic thump of the best new disco and modern R&B. One could pigeonhole them as an electronic rock act, but that tag misses the point completely. They have recently completed a tour of the United States with Hot Chip and have managed to make it overseas to perform live several times in the UK. While there, the band played on Radiohead/Beck producer Nigel Godrich's web and IFC music show From The Basement.

On The Singles' six original tracks and five remixes, Free Blood synthesizes pop and avant-garde leanings. The album opens with the first single, "Never Hear Surf Music Again," and later Barfly (Rong's own Ben Cook accompanied by Anthony Mansfield) contributes a head-turning remix of the track that calls to mind The Flying Lizards, another band that helped bridge similarly opposing worlds.

The album also includes the "Royal Family" single and its B-side, "Grumpy." The Brothers remix their own production work on the former into a main room 4/4 floor-filler, and disco edit legend Greg Wilson twists some dark magic into "Grumpy." Tim "Love" Lee and Scotty Coats also contribute remixes.

30-second MP3 excerpts:

Never Hear Surf Music Again
Quick And Painful

Royal Family
Parangatang
Weekend Condition
Never Hear Surf Music Again (Barfly Mix)

Artist: V/A Title: Notwave
Format: CD Catalog
Number:

Price: $12.00 Label: Rong Dfa
Release
Date:

***After much consideration, Rong Music has compiled a (somewhat) new take on the early '80s underground of New York City's No Wave sound. They've even coined their own name for the new sub-genre: "Notwave." For those who ask, "What the hell does that mean?" Well, have a listen and hear for yourself! But, if ever cornered by some vinyl maniac at the local disco, the knee-jerk response will be, "It's kinda like No Wave, but Not."

The real purpose behind this project was to document an updated version of one of the most influential periods in New York's musical history alongside some early classics. Notwave features new, angular underground pop bands Quad Throw Salchow, Striplight, and Circuits from the UK, sinister techno and funk from New York City's Welcome Stranger and Free Blood, acid rock from LA's Non-Stop, No Wave gems from the legendary James Chance & The Contortions and the UK's Research, disco not disco from Freshro, abstract minimal funk from Rong's own Scotty Coats, and rhythm-heavy dance music from New Jersey's Mr. Chin.

30-second MP3 excerpts:

"Unwelcome Guest" - Quad Throw Salchow
"Hydration Explosion" - NonStop
"No Search, No Entry" - Striplight
"Elephants Meandering" - Tussle
"Faces Vs Fractions (Trust)" - Mr.Chin
"Pistols At Dawn" - Circuits
"I Turn My Camera On" - Freshro
"Smoke Machine" - The Welcome Strangers
"Weekend" - Free Blood
"Beautiful Ones" - Scotti Coats
"East West Axis" - Research
"Lude Boy The Rude Boy" - Scotti Coats
"King Heroin" - James Chance & The Contortions
"The River Art" - Research

***Rong Music has compiled a somewhat new take on the early '80s underground of New York City's No Wave sound. They've even coined their own name for the new sub-genre: "Notwave." Included on the second single are three more songs off the new Notwave full-length compilation CD selected for the club and home listening alike.

UK's Circuits contribute the track "Pistols at Dawn" featuring a Tim "Love" Lee dub. From the first moment, staccato guitars slice into the verse's thick, rolling bass line, the groove underpinned by a thumping drum pattern that John Bonham or Stewart Copeland might have played. Guitar, bass, and drums snap in unison, with directness and purpose.

The mysterious Freshro, who recently produced the eclectic "My Flow" single on Rong, offers a faithful, spirited take on the Spoon anthem "I Turn My Camera On," a spit-polished, bass-heavy dance version that maintains the rigid pacing of the original and reinvents the track as a newfound funky stride.

Research was a little-known experimental band from England based around producer and songwriter Geoff Serle. They toured with Material and Swans, collaborated with serious heads like Elliot Sharp, and released a few independent records recorded at This Heat's Cold Storage. Rong thought this 1987 track so great and relevant that including was a must.
