Artist: FREE BLOOD Title: Never Hear Surf Music Again
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
RONGDFA01
Price: $7.50 Label: Rong
Release
Date:
5/19/08
***First up on Rong's shiny, new imprint with DFA is Free Blood's "Never Hear Surf Music Again" 12-inch.

This two-piece Brooklyn band has more street cred than you can shake a stick at, and for good reason. Consisting of Madeline Davy (Octopi NYC) on the microphone and John Pugh (formally of !!!) also on microphone, Free Blood has got some serious, serious heat on the mic and mixing board. Hey, really, who needs other band members when you're rockin' a style this damn hard?

"Never Hear Surf Music Again" is an unpredictable druggy number, a mangled hybrid of Beatles-esque melodies fused angrily with a Butthole Surfers song. It's followed by the steaming mayhem of "Quick and Painful," a raucous affair that delivers a swift kick to the jewels. On the flip, the Barfly boys stretch things out a bit with a nine-minute Walter-Gibbons-style disco remix of the title track.

After tearing the roof off and burning down the place with their mind-crunching sound, this band is ready to clear out any venue at a moment's notice. Free Blood, coming to a dirty warehouse near you...

Artist: FREE BLOOD Title: Royal Family
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
RONGDFA03
Price: $7.75 Label: Rong
Release
Date:
8/18/08
***Royal Family is the second in a series of three 12-inch singles from Free Blood, the new Brooklyn two-piece consisting of Madeline Davy (Octopi NYC) and John Pugh (formerly of !!!).

On the A-side, the hypnotic vocals and melancholy rhythms of "Royal Family," accompanied by its haunting piano stabs and pounding drums, make for a unique, futuristic pop song. The Brothers then strip it down to its bare essentials for a more four-on-the-floor club version, creating a big-room sound with throbbing synths and layered vocals-- and with the original production on "Royal Family" so outstanding, who better to do the remix?

The flip, "Grumpy," includes tuff cello stabs and screeching vocal effects over a raucous disco break. Warped and funky is one way to describe it. UK disco DJ and re-edit legend Greg Wilson closes the single with his own take on the track.

"Free Blood are a most peculiar band, making a kind of untethered electro rock mess that sprawls across tracks..."

Artist: V/A Title: Notwave Sampler Vol. 1
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
RONGDFA02
Price: $7.75 Label: Rong
Release
Date:
8/4/08
***After much consideration, Rong Music has compiled a (somewhat) new take on the early-'80s New York City no wave sound. They've even coined their own name for the new sub-genre-- "Notwave." Included on this 12-inch vinyl promotional sampler for DJs, fans, and collectors are three songs off the album-length compilation of the same name.

Striplight starts things off with their track "No Search No Entry." The band was formed in an 11th floor flat of a Peckham Tower block, and strode onto the London gig scene with the same pointed confidence with which they approach everything they do. Always dressed in black and white with a sardonic if not a little scary glamor, Striplight delivers pin-sharp shards of guitar and unique vocal stylings over jackhammer tribal drums and heavy, melodic bass which all contribute to an edgy and exciting new sound. The band has spent the last year-and-a-half playing with such bands as Clor, Roland Shanks, The Crane Builders, Elephant, Dolium, Chris Chinchilla, and The Three Johns, to name but a few.

With no need for a singer or a guitar player, Tussle delivers their dancefloor candy with an extremely proficient rhythm section consisting of a dub-loving bass player, two disco-crazy percussionists, and a pair of talented noise specialists. This exclusive unreleased mix of "Elephants Meandering" from the Notwave compilation was done by none other than Sal Principato and Dennis Young of Liquid Liquid fame. The duo add new vocals, a harmonica, and a mountain of percussion (that does actually sound like a herd of elephants), creating a dizzying club mix.

Welcome Stranger's "Smoke Machine" is a mid-tempo dance heater from Thomas Bullock of Rub N Tug/Map Of Africa. With its relentless hook, thumping kick, and haunting vocals, the track should be a surefire hit this summer on the more discerning of dancefloors that prefer things slow and sinister.
