***Tapeloops and odd instrumentation from the exalted Portland bedroom of Sean Byrne. Past releases have found their way into our warehouse from the hearts and minds of labels Shrimper, Road Cone, Quixotic and Pop Secret. Sometimes intellectual, sometimes informed by abrasive and dissonant experimentalism, Bugskullis music is always masterfully orchestrated and infused with a unique and mysterious enthusiasm.

***This is the first release in three years from Portland, Oregon's revered Bugskull (no longer a band, now the solo efforts of Sean Byrne). Big White Cloud is the name used by Byrne's collaborative partner on this release, Phil Quistlund, formerly of the also-revered and also-from-Portland Sone, whose 1995 album Holiday & Sport certainly was ahead of its time in merging an assortment of fresh sounds. Earlier Bugskull albums on labels such as Road Cone, Scratch, and Shrimper were all critically championed. Bugskull has made music that has fit in the camps of indie rock, sound collage, space rock, etc., but there is an undeniable spirit and humanity in the work of Sean Byrne that elevates his records to a special level that makes use of such genre-specific labels not entirely accurate.

Bugskull's Sean Byrne is just one of a great many lo-fi space rock obscurists committed to documenting the intergalactic travels of their narcotized minds. Byrne is clearly committed to boldly going where Stars of the Lid, Sabalon Glitz, Windy & Carl, et al., have already been.... What marks this Portland-based act out from the competition is an other-worldly variant on that most treasured of qualities, namely soul. This, in turn, may stem from a disconcerting mix of sparse, non-humanistic live playing and organically gritty electronics. Either that or it comes from the Byrne's laconic vocals which evoke the stoned mumble of Spacemen 3 / Spectrum / E.A.R. mainman Sonic Boom.... -The Bubblegum Cage

Sone definitely cross paths with Bugskull with their noise bursts and non-conformist construction. Some-where between ... Pavement and vintage Ubu... a bit like Dead C., too.-Broken Guitar

***Two full albums of music from the Chicago/Portland ensemble! Bulb label LP releases We Modern! We Now! and Batallia Femini! are crammed onto one CD, along with all eight tracks from a split 7" (with Xerobot), AND a previously unreleased spoken word piece called "Stage Fright. The acceptable face of No Wave: intentionally, endearingly incompetent guitar playing and a unique rhythmic, um, voice that screams to those who draw no lines between debacle and triumph.

Artist: FRENCH PADDLEBOAT Title: Conversions In Metric
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SCR30CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Scratch
Release
Date:
11/8/99
***The music of French Paddleboat is all its own - gentle and joyful, subtle, graceful, perfectly disorienting in its comfort. Vibes, chimes, bells and clarinet provide melodic and harmonic measures, while odd sounds punctuate and samples swim over lilting acoustic drumbeats and loops. The name Scott August, the talent behind French Paddleboat and one half of the well respected Vote Robot, has been seen in many sentences also containing the names Oval, Stockhausen, Pierre Henry, Raymond Scott, and Can. And he's still a teenager!

***Sophomore album from this former Super Friend sees the venerable Torontonian reaching new heights in song craft and delivery. Ragged yet focused, sparse yet full; a heartfelt collection of ass-kickingly honest new songs with a little help from some of Lonnie's famous Canadian friends in Blue Rodeo, Change Of Heart, and By Divine Right. Non-obvious rock and guitar pop created out of a singular and subtle vision. Yes, the word 'song' has been uttered more than once here, and for good reason.

***Jerk With A Bomb is a two-piece band from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Their debut album, Death To False Metal, thankfully impressed more people than it confused, as it gathered a good dose of positive press, while actually having nothing to do with Metal, false or otherwise. Stylistically this is a songs-first duo, who have elements in their music that could be genre-lized into the camps of folk, country, rock, punk, experimental, jazz, and new wave, but to put it into focus, without using the sadly over used terms "honest" and "heartfelt", Jerk With a Bomb is the product of two unique and talented individuals, one in his thirties, the other his twenties. This second album proudly offers you what they do. Simple as that. There's only room for the two creators here, and besides, as the Skag states, "Trying to find a third member would make it seem like we were trying to sell-out to the people who can't seem to understand why we don't have a bass player-- which coincidentally, is no particular reason."
  • Jerk With A Bomb have toured the USA for 6 weeks straight once before, and a second circle for the summer of 2001 is in the works
  • Another lifetime ago, One Easy Skag was a prominent member of some bands you may have heard of, such as Mission of Christ and Gus.
  • The Silo is actually the current and always drummer of the popular combo Radio Berlin, who have well regarded releases on multiple continents

***Swiss-born Dieter Moebius studied art in Brussels and Berlin, where he met Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Conrad Schnitzler. In 1969 the three founded Kluster, which after two years and three records, Roedelius and Moebius continued as Cluster, whose work is easily as earth-shaking and relevant today as that of Can, Tangerine Dream, Neu!, Faust, Kraftwerk and company. Moebius has always been more interested in straightforward motorized or handmade rhythms and the use of electronic, eccentric and unpredictable machine noises. Blotch, his second solo album (following Tonspuren, released 16 years ago) was produced in March and April of 1999 in Moebius' minimal studio in Berlin. Performed with a Korg Prophecy and an EMU Orbit, it was recorded with a Yamaha eight-track cassette recorder and finally perfectly mastered in Ohio by Tim Story, who duets with Moebius on the album's finaltrack.

Artist: VOTE ROBOT Title: In Meorm Na

SCR39
Price: $12.00 Label: Scratch

Date:

***In Meorm NA is the debut CD, and second album proper, of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada's Vote Robot. An electronic/analog music duo comprised of Scott August (aka French Paddleboat) and Kevin Rivard, Vote Robot stand quite defiantly far apart from the endless crop of current electro experimenters in that they work exclusively with tapes, turntables, mixers, and analog synths; creating a subtle, and engulfing flow that is uneasing and pleasing both. No laptops, no sequencers, no Pro-Tools, no drum machines, nothing high tech, or barely even a product of the 1990's present here; yet the music of Vote Robot manages to stand alongside the latest batch of technicians found in the Wire.

  • French Paddleboat is the left field, real beats-and-chimes-catchy project of younger Robot Scott August, who comprises half of Vote Robot.
  • Vote Robot played the Transmissions 003 festival in North Carolina in 2000. A Vote Robot remix LP, Versions, sold out completely and was recently spotted going for $60.00 US on eBay.
  • People who live for Thrill Jockey/Mille Plateaux-label stuff like Oval and other click/glitch gleaners will find salvation here
