Artist: DJ RUPTURE VS. FILASTINE Title: Quemalo Ya
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
SHOCK16
Price: $4.75 Label: Shockout
Release
Date:
4/16/07
***Stateless beat-smith Filastine built the Quemalo riddim on a rooftop in Rio de Janeiro, welding together lo-fi Arabic violin stabs with chunky ragga tempo kiks and a syncopated ricochet of snares. On top of this, Cuban rappers Ras Mario and Timedo Flow spit wild Spanish rhymes, contra Babylon, and insist we burn it down now. This track starts the fire. On the flipside DJ Rupture, the artist who inserted the boot back into booty, kicks it again with his totally mutated remix, thick with nasty synthetic basslines and double-time drums. In the last year and half Filastine dropped his full length debut Burn It on Soot Records and delivered his transnational, shopping cart-mounted soundclash to clubs, squats, festivals, boats, and streets around the globe. Before that he was busy fucking shit up with the anarcho-marching band Infernal Noise Brigade.

Artist: DJ RUPTURE/COM.A/WICKED ACT Title: No Heathen
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
SH07
Price: $7.75 Label: Shockout
Release
Date:
8/23/04
***"No Heathen" has a dynamite vocal delivered with apocalyptic fervor by Jamaican dancehall MC Wicked Act, an aptly named friend and collaborator of Wayne Lonesome.

Renegade global turntablist DJ/Rupture takes a break from nonstop touring for studio production; the blazing "Blacksmith Riddim" is the first fruit of his work. Rupture joins Wicked Act's strident ragga vocals to a dancefloor-ready, post- Neptunes beat. The instrumental version allows the bad-ass bassline and uncategorizable, funky hiphop-reggae riddim structure to shine. Another Rupture banger, perfectly timed for a summer soundsystem meltdown.

Com.a comes correct with two mixes, one blending a hard-edged Japanese digidub-styled steppers beat with caustic delays and guitars that would make Asian Dub Foundation or Adrian Sherwood proud. The second mix drops in a double- time ragga-junglist mashup sure to shockout all the jungle headz.

Track listing:

1. DJ/Rupture / Wicked Act No Heathen (Blacksmith Mix)
2. DJ/Rupture Blacksmith Riddim
3. Com.A / Wicked Act No Heathen (Ghetto Plasma Mix)
4. Com.A/ Wicked Act No Heathen (Slow One)

  • Tigerbeat6-related dancehall / dub
  • Previous Shockout 12"ers disappeared quickly
  • For fans of Adrian Sherwood, Asian Dub Foundation and all of the above

Artist: GHISLAIN POIRIER / DROP THE LIME / WAYNE LONESOME Title: Tribue To Tiger
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
SH08
Price: $7.75 Label: Shockout
Release
Date:
10/4/04
***In a small western town, Drop The Lime and Wayne Lonesome caught a breakfast table out in the sun. Doublefisting beers, DTL offered to take Lonesome's vocals, speed them up, slow them down, put some fuct up beats under them, and make it sound like the majestic MC was born to be married to them. In this new world of cutting killy sound, his lyrical skills ascend to a new level of dancehall disaster. Tapping into old-school jungle and new dirt grime, DTL punches basslines till knuckles bleed, slits snares like wrists and demands that it is time to push deadly moves on the dancefloor. Critically acclaimed for ultra-minimal explorations of the techno sound, Montrealer Ghislain Poirier recently converted to the religion of head-bobbing with his punishing ragga-style beats and deconstructed, abstract hip hop. This is his first collaboration with Shockout.

Track listing:

1. Ghislain Poirier / Wayne Lonesome - Tribute to Tiger (Mourial Mix)
2. Ghislain Poirier - Tribute to Tiger Instrumental
3. Drop the Lime / Wayne Lonesome - Tribute to Tiger (Glossworm Mix)
4. Drop the Lime / Wayne Lonesome - Tribute to Tiger (Grumpy Mix)
5. Drop the Lime / Wayne Lonesome - Tribute to Tiger (Quickie Mix)

Artist: GHISLAIN POIRIER / EIGHT FROZEN MODULES / DADDY SCREW / WAYNE LONESOME Title: Be Strong
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
SHOCK09
Price: $7.75 Label: Shockout
Release
Date:
10/11/04
***Critically acclaimed for ultra-minimal explorations of the techno sound, Montrealer Ghislain Poirier recently converted to the religion of head-bobbing with his punishing ragga-style beats and deconstructed, abstract hip hop. "Be Strong" is Poirier's second collaboration with Shockout. He recently released two albums: Beats as Politics on Chocolate Industries, featuring Diverse and French-Canadian emcee Séba and Conflicts on Intr_version. Breakupdown is due later this year on Chocolate Industries and features Beans, Diverse and Séba.

Eight Frozen Modules explore the boundaries of sonic bliss, scaling and shaping sounds, creating an erratically cohesive stream of audio data. No sound is left unchanged, and rhythms are sculpted to the point where time signatures are indistinguishable and irrelevant. A by-product of EFM's dedication to the re-engineering of sound is self-imposed cabin fever that bounces from giggling mania to panicked oblivion. A love of dub and ragga production led to work with Shockout, laying tracks and producing for topnotch DJs such as Wayne Lonesome and Daddy Screw.

Track listing:

1. Ghislain Poirier "Be Strong" (Mourial mix)
2. Ghislain Poirier "Be Strong" (Instrumental)
3. Eight Frozen Modules / Wayne Lonesome Dem "Nuh Know Me" (8FM mix)
4. Eight Frozen Modules / Daddy Screw "Be Strong" (8FM mix)

  • Limited edition, as is all Shockout vinyl
  • Dub, ragga and hip hop combine for some fine dada data-core

Artist: ISAACS, GREGORY / KID 606 / DJ C / STRATEGY Title: Gone A Jail
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
SHOCK11
Price: $7.75 Label: Shockout
Release
Date:
10/31/05
***On "Gone A Jail" true reggae legend Gregory Isaacs goes head to head with Shockout veterans Kid606, Strategy (Kranky, Orac) and DJ C (Mashit, deathsucker, RKK). Contributing heavy lyrics and commanding delivery, Isaacs lives up to his nicknames icool ruleri and irude boy of reggae,i as he smoothly and calmly delivers a true-life tale of being sent to Kingstonis General penitentiary.

Kid606 provides his deepest bass-heavy production yet, thick with tuned 808s and a driving 303 acid bassline. On Strategyis mix, rootsy reggae chords take on a synthetic quality, a nod to low-key and deep modern reggae sounds. DJ Cis two mixes of iGone A Jaili are rollercoaster rides through chilled-out riddems and slammini beat fuckery. And, because heis been a fan of Isaacs ever since his father gave him a copy of the Extra Classic LP for his ninth birthday, he put extra care and special effort into crafting an original cone-toaster to back the Cool Ruleris vocal stylings.

Artist: KID 606 / JOHNNY P / DJ C Title: Seaga Face & P. J. Body
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
SHOCK12
Price: $7.75 Label: Shockout
Release
Date:
7/10/06
***Kid606 and DJ C serve up some rankin' riddims for Jonny P's anti-bleaching anthem "Seaga Face and P.J. Body." Jonny P's fiery delivery calls out those women who bleach their face for cosmetic reasons. Edward Seaga (a white man) and P.J. Patterson (a black man) are both recent Jamaican Prime Ministers. We imagine that most Jamaican women would want neither a Seaga Face nor a P.J. Body but the point is, Johnny P likes 'em natural. Kid606's mix is a slinky, funkstep dancehall stomper with clean vocals and a grinding bassline. DJ C comes with a timely but original floor-stomping, reggaeton-influenced riddim. Instrumentals of both are included as well. This 12-inch is sure to be runnin' tings in many a dance.

Artist: POIRIER, GHISLAIN / MR. LEE G Title: Dem Nah Like Me
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
SHOCK13
Price: $7.75 Label: Shockout
Release
Date:
7/10/06
***Montrealer Ghislain Poirier is obsessed with big dirty beats, which is why he creates ragga-style riddims and deconstructed abstract hip-hop. He has collaborated with Beans (Warp), Shockout labelmate DJ Rupture, TTC (Big Dada) and Lotek Hi-Fi (Big Dada) and remixed tracks for UK sensation Lady Sovereign (Def Jam), Les Georges Leningrad and Pulseprogramming. "Dem Nah Like Me" is a companion to Poirieris new full-length, Breakupdown, out now on Chocolate Industries. Poirier, just back from a North American tour with Lady Sovereign, has also been busy on the DJ circuit, moving peopleis asses with his own DJ night in Montreal, La SoirEe Bounce le Gros.

This new 12-inch for Shockout (his third release for the label) pairs Poirier with the talented Mr. Lee G (Ethiopian Taste), a Trinidadian and Brooklyn emcee with a deep, convincing flow. Poirier brings two new riddims out: iRoad Ride Riddim,i a hip-hop, ragga-style beat, and iEast Montreal Riddim,i an experiment in UK grime (more like a Quebecois response to the Forward Riddim). No doubt, this is a banger!

Artist: STRATEGY Title: Going Street Dub/Dunes Dub
Format: 7" Catalog
Number:
SH05
Price: $4.00 Label: Shockout
Release
Date:
4/19/04
***Strategy comes correct with two new dub reggae burners. "Going Street Dub" is a tribute to both Going Street (the notoriously hazy Portland residence of Strategy, Nudge, and Nice Nice), and to early-to-mid-'80s electronics-augmented reggae (e.g. Sly & Robbie, Scientist, early On-U Sound, and the currently spot-lit Bullwackie productions). Tumbling Simmons drum fills and glittering hihats simmer up against crispy chords on the backbeat, and, of course, loads of spring reverb. The B-side is a more spacious track, so named because it debuted at the infamous 420 Dub Night last year at Portland's most crucial underground nightspot, Dunes. The spring reverb returns here-- the vibe is half purist '80s reggae, half out-there electronica. Strategy's dubs pay respects to the best elements of the old school, while still bringing his own distinctive beat-shifting, layered sound fragments, and signature soupy production style.

Well respected for his dynamic live PAs and general enthusiasm for local music, Strategy is a mainstay of Portland's burgeoning explorative electronica scene. His debut CD, Strut came out last year on Outward Music Co., and with multiple remixes and upcoming releases in the works for labels like ORAC, Kranky, and Shockout, he is poised to become one of Cascadia's main electronic music exports.

  • First seven-inch in the wildly popular twelves-inch series
  • Portland dub with '80s electronic vibe
  • Mmmm, spring reverb

Artist: TEAM SHADETEK / DROP THE LIME / RED DRAGON Title: Gal You Nuh Beg
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
SH06
Price: $7.75 Label: Shockout
Release
Date:
9/13/04
***Two of New York's hot new electronic acts, Team Shadetek and Drop The Lime, join true dancehall classic Red Dragon (aka Kingston-born Leroy May, one of Jamaica's most consistently popular DJs who has worked with King Tubby, King Jammy's, Steely And Clevie, Bobby Digital, Danny Browne, Winston Riley, Fashion Records, VP, and Sly and Robbie's Taxi label).

With releases available and forthcoming on Warp, Sound-Ink, Shockout and their own Shadetek label, soze.sht and Zach Zizmore propel their Balkan Nights riddim, crisply cut guitars, and jump-and-shake hand claps with deep digital bass. One foot in new dancehall and R&B, the other in outernational digital space.

Teasing the dance floor found link is Drop The Lime's evolving direction. The beats are raw but steady; broken dancehall rhythms swarm in all directions, catching an organized structure by the swollen bass and pinsharp vocal delivery of Red Dragon's sexually provocative toasting.

Track listing:

1. Team Shadetek / Red Dragon Gal Yu Nuh Beg (Balkan Nights Mix)
2. Shadetek Balkan Nights Riddim
3. Drop The Lime / Red Dragon Gal Yu Nuh Beg (Push Push Mix)
4. Drop The Lime / Red Dragon Gal Yu Nuh Beg (Killy Mix)

Artist: TIMEBLIND / OVE NAXX / DJ C / WAYNE LONESOME Title: Come Back Wicked
Format: 12" Catalog
Number:
SH04
Price: $7.75 Label: Shockout
Release
Date:
4/19/04
***This installment of Shockout's 12-inch series pits a dancehall MC of serious weight and lyrical force against innovative and capable electronic musicians. "Come Back Wicked" is a tuff bad-boy salute to vengeance and confrontation voiced by Jamaican-born MC Wayne Lonesome (The Bug, Razor X). Music is provided by esteemed techno/electronica innovator Timeblind, known for his genre-defying releases on Orthlorng Musork, Drop Bass, Drop Beat, Mutek, Kanzleramt, Communique, and appearances on mix CDs by Laurent Garnier and Josh Wink. Timeblind's seminal "Rastabomba" was one of the first and best ragga-electronica hybrids. Along with the original new dancehall instrumental bonus track "What the...?" these Shockout mixes take things even further, delving into Babylonian abstraction while still swinging a funky Timbaland-on-supercollider beat. Also stepping up to the international soundclash scene are Ove-Naxx and DJ C. The prodigal find of Soot Records, Ove-Naxx pulls off a healthy cross between Aphex Twin and DJ /Rupture. Boston's DJ C (aka EOSS) is well known in the ragga jungle scene for running his own Mash It and Bliss labels, and for helping to found the Toneburst collective.
  • Funky Babylonian ragga-tronica curated by Kid606
