Artist: 1929 Title: Last But Not Leased
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SB100
Price: $12.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
4/7/03
***For the past two years 1929 have been leveling blowboxes all over Philadelphia without so much as a "Hello, It's Me" from Philly's own blowbox king, Todd Rundgren. You'd think with that kind of liberation going on the least Todd could do is invite 'em over to try on a pair of Roger Powell's sunglasses (left by mistake), rub one of Kasim's scarves or exchange high fives with Willie Wilcox. Maybe the Runt's savin' all the good times for Utopia acolytes The Champs. Cujusvis hominis est errare. Once 1929 were spied moping around town, giving each other charleyhorses and hertz donuts after the big dis, the CEO at Siltbreeze agreed to give 'em a record deal. Since they're all Vietnam vets, it makes sense. It's just that kind of restaurant.

1929 consists of members John Boothman (ex-Bro JT & Vibrolux, President BSA {Bald Swingers of America}), Brendan Gallagher (ex-Dischord waterboy, Battlefield Earth reenactor {that's "Terl" to you, farb}) and Tyler Harold (CFBI Booking wunderkid, Fred Biletnikoff lookalike). The sonic, slurring, instrumental tonic they have decided to bottle up and pass off as their own is a dab of Hawkwind, a pinch of Dead C., and a sprinkle of any number of desert rock's heaviest comancheros. You could say it's the finest non-vocal release to pass through the turnstiles since the Smashchords' 12-inch. Or if you weren't born then, how about Earth 2? Say whatever you like. So long as it's not Gone III.

1929 have played in support of and wiped the floor with the likes of Acid Mothers Temple, Bardo Pond, Major Stars, Bright Eyes, and Dead Meadow. As soon as Boothman finishes rebuilding the engine to their Huey Cobra AH-1 touring chopper (well, a Ford station wagon), they would very much like to come to your VC village and lay waste to your rice paddy. Just remember, it's not fun until someone gets an eye put out.

Artist: ALASEHIR Title: Philosophy Of Living Fire
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
SB86
Price: $12.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
10/15/07
***Alasehir is the trio of Michael Gibbons, John Gibbons, and Jason Kourkounis, otherwise known as three-fifths of Bardo Pond. Their third release, following a CD apiece for the Important and aRCHIVE labels, Philosophy of Living Fire continues their sonic exploration of dense, languorous, free expansion.

Billowing and exploding like a cluster of hashish stars, the three instrumental tracks produce a cosmic energy akin to a quasar in the heavens far left of Coltrane's OM and just right of the galaxy known as Dead C's Harsh '70s Reality. Released in a one-time edition of 1000 LPs, this is the rocket ride into the outer stratum at which their previous CDs only hinted. So climb aboard and let Alasehir's Philosophy Of Living Fire be your 2007: A Space Odyssey.

A tour for later this year is being scheduled. Stay tuned to www.siltbreeze.com for further info.

"The secret here is the groove, it takes you in and it won't let you go in all its head-nodding goodness. An essential slice of spiritual rock..." --Boomkat

Artist: ASHTABULA Title: Possible Smokestacks
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SB79CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
3/27/00
***Much ado - okay, a moderate, respectable amount of ado - was made about Ashtabula's debut LP River of Many Dead Fish. A mere side project for Bob Malloy, according to the conventional wisdom, it allowed the remaining members of the Strapping Fieldhands to restock their dwindling supply of owl tonic and to gas up the skiffle barge in the port of limbo. There may well be a kernel of truth in that posit, but now we have a second Ashtabula release, and there hasn't been a collection of new 'Fieldhands recordings sinceOe well, the last one. They say owl tonic isn't so easy to get nowadays, and a barge ain't exactly a canoe, either.

Correct us if we're wrong, but we believe it was the legendary '60s imagemaker Jake Witsen who said, "Give me intestinal fortitude over verisimilitude any day, 'cause I want a band with blood and guts, not a group of bleepin' nuts." Good on yer, Jake ol' boy, you said a mouthful there. But the Witsenian guts on Possible Smokestacks might better be spelled p-l-u-c-k. Lots of pluck. As with outfits within the Elephant 6 collective, there's a ubiquity about it as well (Brobdignagian in this case, as opposed to E6's Lilliputian, let's set the record straight).

Smokestacks takes in everything from the glimmer of '60s psychedelic Britpop (a la the UK Kaleidoscope) to a bizarro-world cross between Remake/Remodel-era Roxy Music and Dub Housing-era Pere Ubu, to the Edgar Broughton Band and Hawkwind (setting ears on fire in a tent on the Glastonbury plains). An appearance by a German chanteuse on one track sways somewhere between Nico and Lotte Lenya (but for god's sake, don't go blabbing to Boyd Rice). This album is, as they are wont to say in Magnet, "all over the place." It might make you cry, it might make you sweat, but it'll definitely make you moist. And in these frigid times, kingpin, isn't leaving one's glands to the mercy of people like Bob Malloy what it's all about?

***A reissue of the landmark, '92 double album from these oft bowed-before and constantly imitated New Zealand guiterrorizers on CD. No matter which deranged psychological profile you fit, The Pontiff, The Painter and The Clutz will convince you to "just put down the gun, Charlie," long before the SWAT team rounds the first corner. You just need a little time to clear your head, to think about some things through, yeah, yeah, that's it, maybe call your cousin who said you could work as a barback at his joint on Oahu until this mess blows over. Artist: DER TPK Title: Harmful Emotions
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
SB83
Price: $12.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
1/22/07
***Der TPK is the charming acronym for Der Teenage Panzer Korps, and anyone who can't appreciate the imagery of a pipsqueak quartet of fuzzy, distorted youth, drenched in DIY testosterone, rumbling out from sewers and into the street, just hasn't been vibing on the correct History Channel.

Based outta parts unknown (Germany? California? Is there a difference?), Der TPK gnash and gnarl through the charred landscape of the underground like a small battalion of Tiger tanks blasting across the steppes of the Ukraine. Their sonic attack at times recalls the anxious throb of Mars in their prime, but suddenly it shifts and you could swear you were locked in battle with -- uh, listening to, that is -- the early discordant rumble of Savage Republic. These four youths -- Bunker Wolf, Catholic Pat, Boy True and Edmund Xavier -- understand they are channeling a vortex of sound, circa '79-'81. That's where they wanna be. The walls shake, the floor crawls. Hey, whatta place! And really, how could comparisons to Mars and Savage Republic ever be a bad thing? Has Siltbreeze ever lied to you?

Harmful Emotions is the first LP by Der TPK, following a limited edition seven-inch on the Skulltones label as well as some mega-rare CDRs released via Jewelled Antler Collective on the Pink Skulls label. This is a one-time vinyl-only release, with paste-on covers, in an edition of 500 copies. Just like your Grandpa's Siltbreeze! Get it while it's hot.

Artist: EAT SKULL Title: Sick To Death
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
SB96LP
Price: $12.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
5/19/08
Leave it to the English to embellish a term like "shit-gaze" and in doing so codify the current DIY threadbare scrape of Times New Viking, Psychedelic Horseshit, and Tyvek. No surprise that the greatest shit-gazer of all time was none other than Samuel Coleridge, an avowed Brit who, plied full of laudanum, would sit for hours and stare at his bowel movements, writing copious notes on their color, texture, etc. "Monday? Oh, stool journal, to where didst thine weekend go?"

At any rate, it's hard to gauge how much mileage the Limeys can get with such a phrase, but cross your fingers it hangs around long enough for Eat Skull to share in the odorous mirth. Call their genre whatever you want; Eat Skull will be ensconced in the stately pleasure-dome at Xanadu, waiting for the checks to clear.

Biscuit crumbs and tea stains be damned, Eat Skull are a quartet hailing from Portland, Oregon, co-masterminded by Rob Enbom (former bushwacker in the ranks of Hospitals and Hole Class) and another original Hospital, Rod Meyer (the greatest living genius of punk). Previous Eat Skull efforts include a cassette-only EP and a pair of 7-inches, all of which might be out of print. Like their brethren and forebears, Eat Skull runs a post pattern deep beyond pop and punk. They bring to the game an extrasensory appreciation of New Zealand's South Island Sound (Great Unwashed, Axemen), Cleveland art-damage skronk (Modern Art Studio, X-X), and the wretched excess of forgotten Midwest hardcore (Stiff Legged Sheep, Chemotherapy). In other words, just what you need!

Pip, pip matey, rum, sodomy, chin up and all that. Sick to Death is sure to be a lock for many year-end bests or Tom Lax's (DJ) name isn't Kublai Khan.

Artist: EX-COCAINE Title: Esta Guerra
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
SB85LP
Price: $13.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
5/14/07
***Forged in the Garden City (that's Missoula, Montana to you, piker), Ex-Cocaine is the formidable, sneer-wielding duo of Bryan Ramirez (guitars, effects, vocals) and Mike C (percussion, hexes, spells). Their debut LP from 2005, Keep America Mellow (on Ramirez's Killertree label) brought to light heavy august vibes steeped in the tippled, woodbine 'n' cider electro-folk of Michael Chapman, Steve Peregrine Took, Roy Harper, and other more reclusive Anglo biscuit-snuffers whose works haunt the archives of Kissing Spell and Shadoks.

On their second effort, Ex-Cocaine throw down hard, evoking a gnarled bonfire with flames that roar thunderously like the detuned, rockist clang of Dead C's Harsh '70s Reality, and burns evenly like the smelted, Rust Belt psychedelia of Stone Harbour's Emerges. Vinyl-only and limited, the sparks are flying off this one already. Catch it if you can.

Working pretty much from a template of congas and electric fuzz, these heavy mellow bros conjure up swirling eddies of lo-fi, DIY psych that are pretty unbeatable. Were we to have a seance--or simply break out a Ouija Board--to investigate previous blazers of their trail, we might see, hear or spell out such luminaries as Steve Peregrine Took, Stone Harbour, Parameter, Tim Buckley or (Jandek's) Units. --Siltblog

Artist: FABULOUS DIAMONDS Title: S/T
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
SB89LP
Price: $13.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
6/2/08
Adorably known to friends and family in Australia as Jarrod and Nisa, The Fabulous Diamonds' beguiling truck is a mesmerizing mix of synth, dub, and percussion, woven around honey-ache vocal stylings recalling (in spirit) past Aussie noisemakers Scattered Order or Makers Of The Dead Travel Fast, as well as those of Augustus Pablo, Young Marble Giants, and Suicide.

. Their one previous release was a 7-inch co-released by Nervous Jerk and Misteltone, and it garnered praise from the Blogosphere and a smattering of airplay on discerning freeform radio stations around the US. This LP on Siltbreeze has been in the works for the better part of a year; its release coincides their first American tour (along with Siltbreeze labelmates, Psychedelic Horseshit).

"Borne out of a tradition that lies somewhere between classic dub, experimentalism and post punk, Fabulous Diamonds foreground a style (unique) and substance (intriguing) that come together in a hypnotic frenzy. Assembled amidst high levels of delay, this Melbourne two-piece creates a truly bewildering mix.... It's the hit you've been waiting for throughout this post post-punk melee we live in. Fabulous Diamonds present a world drenched in discordant jams stemming from a parallel universe of sonic intensity, one that picks up on the heritage embedded in post-punk, but recreates rather than rehashes the influence." --Eliza Sarlos, Mess + Noise

Artist: FACTUMS Title: Alien Native
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
SB87LP
Price: $12.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
9/10/07
***Factums are a contempo three-piece hailing out of Seattle who claim to have ties with (i.e. include former members of) A-Frames and The Intelligence. But since we don't subscribe to The Rocket or have li'l Johnny Poneman fetch us our lattes (anymore!), it's hard to know if that pedigree is even worth mentioning. Everyone's entitled to a past, dubious as it might be. Dieter Meier would have you believe that he had no punk history before Yello. Take that, Fresh Color! Anyway, Factums don't seem to relish or recoil from the facts and let's face it, if it helps the records fly off the shelves, how's that a bad thing?

Originally released as a CD in 2004, Alien Native shows a band burrowed deep in the mystery and menace of the nascent gnarl of experimental art rock. Imagine a record collection consisting solely of The Residents' Fingerprince, Chrome's Alien Soundtracks, and Cabaret Voltaire's Nag Nag Nag. A blast from any of these records could clear a house back in the old days; now they fill it. Fortunately The Factums don't operate on such a binary plane. They are capable of resorting to either option, depending on the time and place. Alien Native is a great swab of past-sounding electro-junkoid rumble absorbed into the mind and matter of present day pre-analog excavators.

Artist: GUIDED BY VOICES Title: Get Out Of My Stations
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SB028
Price: $9.50 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
8/25/03
***Originally released in 1993, Get Out Of My Stations boasts the same classic Guided by Voices lineup as Propeller-- Robert and Jim Pollard, Tobin Sprout, Mitch Mitchell, Dan Toohey and Kevin Fennel (and let's not forget that it was lovingly fucked with by Mike Rep on the production side of things). Outside of the Siltbreeze seven-inch collection (Tard & Further'd), none of the original seven tracks have turned up on any GBV, Pollard, or Sprout project since this seven-inch was released 10 years ago. Too frequently overlooked-- due to the unavailability of this record for many years-- is how great these tracks are, even compared to the spate of seven-inch EPs that turned up in the wake of Propeller hysteria. Not one throwaway track exists upon it. This is blood, sweat and beers, otherwise known as blue ribbon GBV (how and why this record originally came to be should tell you all you need to know: the recordings were traded to Siltbreeze for a pair of vintage Walt "Clyde" Frazier Pumas-- 1973, size 11, green suede, never worn-- and a bottle of Silly Goose authentic German apple schnapps. Those were the days!).

Get Out Of My Stations, in all its lo-fi glory, now on compact disc for the first time, contains four extra live tracks from the same era. The recordings are sharp, captured as they came down-- hot, spontaneous and presented to you honestly, without the assistance of studio gimmicks. Don't be afraid to crack open a beer and enjoy the show.

***Hall of Fameis third full-length album finds these NYC indoor miners forging even deeper into their secret cave of gems (financed with new picksinishovels on the Siltbreeze tab). Like their previous output on the Amish label, this oneis a melange of tribal thump, eastern drone, raga concrete and melodious melancholia. Hall of Fameis unique, not easily identifiable sound has been compared to revered oufits such as Flies Inside the Sun and The Shadow Ring, sometimes even in English. If, like the young scribes from Hayfever magazine, your recollection and your record collection go back further than a time we like to call ithe early i90s,i itis okay to shout iking me!i and move on. But if you really wanna sit around the oli checkerboard discussing strategy, then your next stop is a Lower East Side of the late i60s; Hall of Fameis healthy smattering of influences stretches back to Ludlow Street-era Velvet Underground, Prestige-era Moondog, The Godz and Angus MacLise.

Recently the band played a series of shows with The Red Krayola, impressing the hell out of that old Quixotic Dadaist Mayo Thompson and his erstwhile Sancho Panza, David Grubbs. Senor Grubbs was so impressed that he enlisted HoFis Dan Brown to do some drumming for his forthcoming release of covers from various performances from the King Biscuit Flower Hour. Only in New York!

Artist: MACLISE, ANGUS Title: Brain Damage In Oklahoma City
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SB81CD
Price: $13.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
8/21/00
***Brain Damage in Oklahoma City is the second installment in the Siltbreeze/Quakebasket series of music by poet/mystic/shaman Angus MacLise. Culled from the archives of Mr. Tony Conrad, this volume (covering the years 1967-'70) highlights MacLise's unique and intricate drumming style. Cembalum, bongos, hand drum, barrel congas-all are majestically thumped'n'bumped for maximum orgasmic sensory satisfaction.

Comprised of eight tracks, the acme of this collection is the two large ensemble pieces, "Dreamweapon Benefit for the Oklahoma City Police Dept. parts 1 & 2," featuring Angus (barrel conga), Hetty MacLise (tampura), the poet Jackson Maclow (recorders and voice), Henry Flynt (song flute and voice) and Tony Conrad (limp string). These tracks, recorded in May of 1968, are the apex of maximalist loft style psychedelic improvisation.

Conrad's illuminating, occasionally hilarious liner notes set up the narrative of this volume and offering a brief glimpse back into the mind-scrambling fracas that was NYC, USA, Earth 1968. Along with more gorgeous, brain-warpng Invasion-stryle sleeve art, included in the CD booklet is a reproduction of the poster for the Dreamweapon Benefit, confirmation in black and white that for four nights in May, 1968, Wooster Street Cinematheque was definitely one witchy place to be.

Artist: NAKED ON THE VAGUE Title: Blood Pressure Sessions
Format: LP Catalog

SB97LP
Price: $13.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
3/3/08
***Lucy Phelan and M.P. Hopkins hail from Sydney, Australia. Behind a basic framework of keyboard, bass, and vocals (and all manner of tinkered-with percussion) Naked on the Vague's distinct aggregate of sound calls to mind everything from SPK to Mars and beyond. Or, as they're fond of calling them in Philly, "the Death Star version of Times New Viking."

Originally released in 2007 on CD by the fearless Australian Dual Plover label, The Blood Pressure Sessions ventures into a darker realm than their debut 7-inch (also on Dual Plover) had erroneously suggested. Propelled by the sharp, rhythmic snare drum beat and anchored by thunderous, fuzzed bass-lines and stinging, swinging organ and synth fills, Phelan and Hopkins take turns rounding out the vocal duties, giving the whole of their sound a sonorous curtain of ecstatic foreboding. Betraying a gallows wit, the band refers to their music as "apocalyptic pop," which could be construed as both drowning and waving.

Coming from the label that brought the world both The Dead C and Shadow Ring, Naked On The Vague is a perfect fit in the Siltbreeze discography. Look for them at the upcoming SXSW and on tour throughout the US in the spring of 2008.

Release
Date:

***Located within the Trapani Province of Sicily, Oper'azione Nafta considers their self-described "un-rock" as "a blowjob from Luigi Russolo." There's little doubt the great Futurist author of the The Art Of Noises manifesto would be anything but chuffed by such salacious bravado. Indeed, the trio pours on the racket and sounds like they were hatched in a custom-built Russolo intonarumori. Successfully putting the on back in bonkers, Oper'azione Nafta doles out only The Berserk, which might be why, at any given time, their unstoppable onslaught taps into rock/improv fizz a la Sun City Girls, Etron Fou Leloublan or the Butthole Surfers, various FMP blat, and MEV-like electronic scramble. When they claim "We are Oper'azione Nafta and we kill Bambi!" who among us would question it? Besides, a nice bowl of Sicilian-styled venison ragout would really hit the spot.

Released in a vinyl-only, one-time edition of 500, Cavuru is the band's debut release.

Artist: PINK REASON Title: Cleaning The Mirror
Format: LP Catalog

Price: $12.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
4/16/07
***Pink Reason is always Kevin DeBroux and practically never anyone else. The self-released Pink Reason debut seven-inch from 2006 was an itch of such beguiling psychic ache that all the inhabitants of Siltbreeze Island scratched it until they bled. On this first full length, the resident of Green Bay, Wisconsin, continues to ooze muzzy melancholia by the bucket, ably and formidably clearing house in Sanguine Manor, whose previous tenants include Royal Trux, The Jacobites, Phantom Payne, Black Vial, and other marginal inhabitants whose sticky fingers glimmer in stoned adulation.

Dominated by creeping synths, stark strums and rickety percussive splats that complement De Broux's heartscraping vocal catharsis, Cleaning The Mirror journeys far beyond any known perspective, practically insinuating an alternate otherworld where Tim Buckley's Lorca and Jandek's Ready For The House have been hybridized into a ripe-for-plucking masterpiece. Or, shunning hyperbole in favor of acronym, Pink Reason's modern day DIY is very FYI that you should check out PDQ.

Look for Pink Reason live via land, sea and air throughout 2007.

Format: CD Catalog

SB84CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:

Artist: PSYCHEDELIC HORSESHIT Title: Magic Flowers Droned
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SB88CD
Price: $12.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:

**Let's spin the history dial back and wonder what if Hitler had inherited six million dollars instead of being responsible for the deaths of six million Jews? Think about it-- no Anne Frank, Joseph Mengle, or Auschwitz; marzipan sales would be way up, cocaine legal, and vegetarians would have had an early advocate and mentor; the German Sheperd would be the national bird; watercoloring might even be a serious medium-- the mind boggles. And as an ardent fan of classical music (not to mention the six mil burnin' a hole in his pocket, Mein Gott!) you can bet Adolph would have been on board with Psychedelic Horseshit. The sounds on Magic Flowers Droned captures the rickety skeletal pop of Step Forward-era Fall, the lo-fi fuzz of Swell Maps, and static noblesse of Slay Tracks-era Pavement. Is that classical enough for ya? For sure, this full-length debut is no Parsifal, but to these guys, sometimes a spear is just a spear and The Holy Grail is a movie made by Monty Python. As for Wagner, four outta five housepainters will tell you theirs is a name you can trust. Now where'd I put that joint?

Considered by the Columbus cognoscenti as the "little brother band" (Stooges-style) to Times New Viking (MC5-style), Psychedelic Horseshit first came about as three buds determined to crash a hippie fest and jam retardo. When asked for their name, singer/guitarist Matt Whitehurst replied, "Just call us Psychedelic Horseshit." The band killed, the name stuck, and thus the die was ignominiously cast. Since then, they played with the Urinals, Country Teasers, Dan Melchior, Blues Control, toured with Pink Reason and Times New Viking, ruled a couple showcases at the 2007 SXSW, basically doing what they can to lay the foundation for the release of this debut LP (a previous 7-inch on the Columbus Discount label made many 2006 Best Of lists, too).

Distempered, jaded, harmonious, and ramshackle, Psychedelic Horseshit keeps the glass half full; the question is, do you have the courage to drink their wry and wizened brew? Sure you do, it's the tonic of champions!

Artist: RESINEATORS Title: Don't ____ With The Fantasy
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SB82
Price: $12.00 Label: Siltbreeze
Release
Date:
8/6/01
***Get ready to match the stars! The Resineators deliver the ultimate $500 response on their second full-length player, Don't ____ with the Fantasy, an instant California drug-classic of psych-expanded rockers, white-line fevers, and black-hole crawlers from San Francisco's overlords of panic.

Panelists David Nudelman (3 Stoned Men, The Wild Breed) and Anthony Bedard (Icky Boyfriends, The Leather Uppers) have augmented their telepathic, two-man collision drill with Aaron Nudelman (Sunless Day) and Andy Oglesby (The Roofies) to forge this collection of 10 flypaper-melodic, primal-concussive, battered and deep-fried cans of corn. This statement episode was captured at TinTel Park in all its shimmering clarity and pummeling hi-fidelity by pause-button operator Greg Freeman (Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, Pell Mell) and mastered by John Croslin (Beulah, Guided by Voices).

Over the past two seasons, The Resineators have thrilled spectators at national SuperMatch exhibitions against teams such as Jonathan Richman, Mudhoney, In The Red recording artist Andre Williams, Quintron, and Deerhoof. Their most recent Philadelphia appearance concluded with David "The Nude" Nudelman sailing through an open door on the Khyber Yards leftfield wall, out onto the street, and straight into the emergency ward of Siltbreeze Children's Hospital, where the rarely smiling orthopedic trauma clinical director, Tiberius J. Lax, awaited, pen in hand, with a Vicodin-laced, cheesesteak-covered contract.

***Spawned from the formidable Louisville, KY collective known as Black Velvet Fuckere (Valley Of The Ashes, Phantom Family Halo, Kark, etc.), Sapat resides as the centrifugal force in this Midwestern psychedelic madrigal set in the psychosexual backwaters of the mighty Ohio River. For the entirety of the '00 decade, members have kept busy collaborating with and/or massaging the egos of various and sundry avant-pontiffs such as Robert Fripp, Magik Markers, Dead Child (David Pajo's metal band. That's right, David Pajo!) and Eugene Chadbourne -- when not honing the orgone energy of Sapat.

The Fall of '06 saw their debut release, a seven-inch on BVF entitled Tongue-Tied & Staid that had a few astute bloggers comparing the action within to "aggressive blues a la Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band." However, for this self-titled full-length release, Sapat has opted for a different, more organic sonic waft. Acoustically packed to the gills, the octet effortlessly strums and blows breezy vibes, emitting kosmisch melodies and Teutonic ambience that channel-- Julian Cope-like-- past giants such as Limbus 4, Siloah and Lord Krishna Von Goloka (you know, the A-team of Krautrock). Once you launch into the group's spacey and entrancing, yet calming and soothing asteroid belt, you might mistake the Ozarks for the Alps if you're not careful. And who could blame you? You're way up there and the air's thin; hallucinating's a must.

***My first encounter with Times New Viking was in the form of a cassingle. I found it lodged in what appeared to be a shrine to them on a street corner during our annual litter crusade. Inside the cassette's handmade case was scrawled "This am band. Good band!" Next to that was a crude drawing of what appeared to be three people playing instruments. It smelled musty and had a real creepy, cultish vibe to it. I was intrigued. Playing the cassette I was at once taken back at the raw primitivness of the music. The organ wheezed and croaked, the drums snapped with sickness and a guitar hacked through it all like a serrated, gangrenous knife. On top of this was a frantic male/female vocal drama. It sounded like demonic incantaions or really elaborate recipes being delivered in a frantic, almost mantra-like chatter. It was unlike anything I'd heard in a long time. I needed to get to the bottom of the Times New Viking mystery.

Long story short, in the following months I saw TNV perform numerous times and got to know them rather well. And yes, I have found many more shrines (and continue to find them to this day).

What you have here is a collection of songs found on the various shrine cassettes. They've all been lovingly fucked with my Mr. Mike Rep, (the man behind the lo-fi genius of Guided By Voices' Propeller and Get Out Of My Stations among other things) and as the old saying goes "the proof is in the pudding." TNV successfully skirt the current homogenization of the rock press pigeonhole. Neither are they new-weird-america, nor are they newnoise- underground. I suspect Times New Viking are at the forefront of a new, yet-to-be defined movement. It's only a matter of time though. And when that time comes I want to be there. My shrine needs a motherfuckin' name!

***What a year 2006 was for Times New Viking. Their hot debut album under their belt, the trio set off on a nationwide U.S. tour (including two scorching performances at SxSW), followed by a springtime East Coast jaunt in support of The Country Teasers, not to mention various scraps in the puniverse of new weird America, and drawing blood from the likes of Magik Markers, Lambsbread and Burning Star Core. All of which is fine and good -- love those chops! -- but fans (and label execs) have been gnashing their teeth in anticipation, wondering "where's the next record?"

The Paisley Reich ably avoids D.S.A. syndrome (an acronym coined by The Shadow Ring meaning "difficult second album").Having developed even more vim and vigor, TNV's blur of high-concept pop, crud, and crunch is staggering. Scribes who languor within the compnoscenti of glossy print continue to peep about parallels to Guided By Voices and Pavement; those of us paying our own way recall the glorious lo-fi shimmer of nascent Flying Nun via The Clean, Great Unwashed, and Max Block.

So if you're travelling up and down the SH1 somewhere between Christchurch and Dunedin and hear the luring strains of harmony and distemper, know that it is not The Kilgour Bros., Robert Scott nor the family Crook. It's the malcontented rumble of Times New Viking wistfully channeling spirits from the grime of Washington Beach to the shine of the Otago Peninsula. And in Reich-speak, that may take a thousand years to achieve, but you don't have to be a Scottish weaver to know that paisley wasn't patterned in a day. Patience is a grace. In the meantime, hold onto the rail and let it rock!
