Release
Date:

***Bum Kon (named after Korean mass murderer Woo Bum Kon) was one of the best hardcore bands in the early '80s, even if few outside of Denver knew it. Loud as hell and fast as fuck, Larry Denning, Mark Thorpe, Erik Oberhausen and Bob McDonald thrashed on par with any other teenage punkers in the US.

In 1983, the band recorded their only single, "Drunken Sex Sucks" (released by Local Anesthetic and recorded by Bob Ferbrache), which sold through two pressings at the time and now fetches up to $150 on eBay. Five songs appear on the single but twenty more were recorded at the same session and have been unavailable until now. Some of the tracks that did not make the single are arguably better than the ones that did. At the time, the band focused their energy into two albums and these recordings were forgotten over time. The original tapes were found while mastering the Local Anesthetic compilation and now the best hardcore record from '83 that was never released can finally see the light of day.

This album is co-released by Maximum Rocknroll Records and is guaranteed to please punks both old and new.

Artist: DENVER GENTLEMEN Title: Introducing The Denver Gentlemen
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SMOOCH16
Price: $9.50 Label: Smooch
Release
Date:
3/5/07
***The aptly named Denver Gentlemen can take credit for spawning an entire scene and for what is increasingly being referred to as the "Denver Sound." Forget six degrees of separation; members of 16 Horsepower, Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Devotchka, Munly & the Lee Lewis Harlots, Woven Hand, Kalamath Brothers, and Tarantella all spent time in the Gentlemen's ranks.

Although heavily influenced by traditional roots music, they tone down the twang of other Denver groups, opting for a gothic-cabaret sound full of piano, accordion, and glockenspiel.

Original Gentlemen Jeffrey-Paul Norlander and David Eugene Edwards (aka Woven Hand) formed the band in 1988. When Edwards left the group in 1991 to form 16 Horsepower, Slim Cessna and Frank Hauser jr. joined up briefly, then split to form the Auto Club. Norlander, putting the Gents on hold, followed Edwards's lead and himself joined 16 Horsepower.

Thus, five songs on 16HP's third album, Low Estate, were originally Denver Gentlemen songs. Two of these, "The Denver Grab" and "The Lord, He Speak To Me" appear here.

Norlander eventually left 16HP (under unpleasant circumstances) and in 2001, reassembled the Gentlemen to celebrate the belated release of the group's first album, Introducing The Denver Gentlemen (recorded back in '95). They've continued performing and recording ever since and are currently working on their third album.

Artist: LILIUM Title: Short Stories
Format: CD+DVD Catalog
Number:
SMOOCH9
Price: $16.00 Label: Smooch
Release
Date:
7/11/05
***Lilium's Short Stories brings us pure art as represented by musical expression. Jean-Yves Tola and Pascal Humbert (perhaps better known as two-thirds of Sixteen Horsepower) and some of their most talented friends have put together a potent cocktail of words and sounds unlike any of their previous combined efforts. Ideals that they themselves embrace as artists are given life through a marriage of the duo's music with the voices of their collaborators. Tola and Humbert conduct and hum with these voices, compartmentalizing the spaces they live in with lilting piano, whispering taps and swimming bass lines that throb up and down like the complaining pain of a toothache into the sorrowful moan of a lovesick heart. With slow, haunting rhythms, they create unique spaces where these songs to set up house and make their own lives forever. And when 16HP vocalist David Eugene joins in, they recapture the delicate beauty of their former band at its peak. The two musicians behind Lilium have never laid their heads on the rail to hear what was coming down the tracks. They have kept their attention on the music that represents the greatest possible freedom of expression. Music that infused their souls with wisdom, music they consider art.
  • Features vocals by David Edwards (Sixteen Horsepower and Woven Hand), Kal Calhoone (Tarantella), and John Grant (Czars)
  • Guest musicians include Dana Colley and Billy Conway, both formerly of Morphine
  • Includes bonus DVD of the entire album mixed into surround sound
  • First time released in U.S.
  • For fans of Woven Hand, 16 Horsepower, Calexico

Artist: LILIUM Title: Transmission Of All The Good-Byes
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SMOOCH8
Price: $12.00 Label: Smooch
Release
Date:
7/11/05
***"Lilium is the nom-de-disque of Pascal Humbert, a guitarist best known for his work with alt.country outfit Sixteen Horsepower, or his collaboration with PJ Harvey sidemen Rob Ellis and John Parish as Spleen. Culled from solo pieces recorded between 1984 and 2000, Transmission Of All The Good-Byes makes a mockery of the notion of musical fashion: it's quite impossible to tell which tracks date from which era, so congruent are their diverse forms. The titles are in some cases bluntly descriptive: the ambient drones of "Swell" loom and recede accordingly, and the guitar harmonics and bowed-strings of "The Film Box" are accompanied by the whirring of a film projector. "Four Basses," meanwhile, is exactly that, the interweaving parts layered in the methodical manner of Tubular Bells (albeit restricted to a more agreeable minute and a half). Others are less prosaic. "Loveless Road" is a delightful union of guitar arpeggios and wistful contrails of melodica driven along by a lazily martial snare, while the gorgeous "Sleeping Inside" employs yawning bowed bass and mournful clarinet to shade a multi-tracked guitar instrumental with a melody reminiscent of Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat." Performed entirely by Humbert, save for three drum parts, one clarinet and one vocal, the album makes an evocative addition to the south-western sadcore-soundtrack genre. Particularly recommended to fans of Calexico and Rainer." -- Andy Gill, The Independent

Artist: MUNLY Title: Blurry
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SMOOCH11
Price: $12.00 Label: Smooch
Release
Date:
7/10/06
***Munly, central songwriter and co-frontman for Slim Cessna's Auto Club (as well as the leader of his own troupe, The Lee Lewis Harlots), has come a long way since his 1996 debut. Blurry remains his only true solo album, a completely stripped-down affair featuring Munly on guitar and vocals sans back-up band, and the perfect, root-level introduction to his quirky, pop-influenced songwriting. Critically acclaimed upon its release, Blurry also received particularly strong responses from unexpected corners: the song "Virgin of Manhattan" was used in a sex scene on TV's Melrose Place, while other tracks somehow became hits in Perth, Australia.

Shortly after the album's release, Munly assembled a backing band, moved out of his Boulder, Colorado, garage (where Blurry was recorded) and hit the road. Since then he's released six more records-- two with Slim Cessna's Auto Club-- published a book, and returned to Colorado where he's gained a devout cult following as one of the best songwriters on the Denver scene along with friends 16 Horsepower, Tarantella, Woven Hand, Devotchka and The Denver Gentlemen.

This special edition reissue is limited to 1000 copies and features new artwork. All tracks have been lovingly remastered by Bob Ferbrache at Denver's Absinthe Studio.

Artist: MUNLY DE DAR HE Title: Munly De Dar He
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SMOOCH12
Price: $12.00 Label: Smooch
Release
Date:
7/10/06
***One year after the release of his solo debut, Blurry, Slim Cessna's Auto Club songwriter and co-frontman Munly recorded this follow-up with a full backing band including cello, violin, banjo, tuba, accordion, percussion, and trumpet. Going under the name Munly De Dar He, the band rehearsed and recorded in an abandoned semi trailer in Denver, Colorado. The resulting full-length, originally released on the W.A.R. label in 1997, is a drastic departure from Munly's debut with a far more rootsy, back-country feel.

The group next moved to Austin, Texas, just long enough to play a few shows and make an appearance on MTV's Austin Stories before hightailing it back to the "Centennial" state where they befriended two other bands on the Denver scene, 16 Horsepower and Slim Cessna's Auto Club (the band Munly would join two years later). Influenced by American roots music, country, and folk, the new triumvirate began crafting what they called "The Denver Sound" which also incorporated gothic and punk influences. After a few tours, Munly set off for New York City leaving his back-up musicians behind in Boulder, where they eventually morphed into the country-cabaret act Devotchka.

Munly de Har He kicks off with "Tried and True Against the Law," an upbeat song perfect for any hoe-down. Some tracks, like "Shoot Her With A Good Hand Gun," retain the lyrical humor from Blurry while others, like "Austria's First Fever," have a darker feel, prominent on later Munly albums. Munly de Dar He also finds Munly exploring the scope of his fantastic voice, ranging from low baritone to high falsetto to the yodel now commonly heard on Slim Cessna's Auto Club releases.

This special edition reissue, remastered by Bob Ferbrache at Denver's Absinthe Studio, is limited to 1000 copies.

30-second MP3 excerpts:

Tried and True Against the Law
Chutzpa
My Erziehung
Shoot Her With a Good Hand Gun
Seven Warts On Pa's Belly
Austria's First Fever
Teach Pachyderms To Swim
Floating on Huron

Artist: MUNLY, JAY Title: Galvanized Yankee
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SMOOCH14
Price: $9.50 Label: Smooch
Release
Date:
2/5/07
***In 1998 Jay Munly left his home in Denver for the bright lights of New York City, leaving behind a band, De Dar He, that would eventually morph into current country-cabaret faves Devotchka. In The Big Apple, Munly studied acting and writing but still found time to record his third album, Galvanized Yankee.

The title may have been influenced by his stay in the Northeast but it also ties in with a larger theme that runs through the album: the American Civil War. Lost limbs, mourning mothers, marching and moonshine are all topics Munly tackles on this historical concept album. Not surprisingly, despite all the banjo and some beautiful backing female harmonies, Galvanized Yankee is a pretty dark and melancholy affair.

Munly also incorporates events from his life in NYC at the time into the music. Following an introduction to Patrick Stewart of Star Trek fame, he convinced the actor to scream back-up vocals on "Virgin of Manhattan." "Math Made Easy" features a PSA advertisement he recorded on an acting job (he also appeared in a hot dog commercial). Also of interest is "Death Ain't You Got No Shame," a country-folk standard now performed regularly by Slim Cessna's Auto Club.

Originally released by the WAR label in 1999 as a limited edition CD, Galvanized Yankee has become one of Munly's most sought-after albums. This new edition, lovingly remastered by Bob Ferbrache, reveals subtle touches not audible in the original mix. Munly is currently recording three new albums (simultaneously) with his backing band, The Lee Lewis Harlots, and touring as much as possible.

Artist: ROTHBARD, ANDREW DOUGLAS Title: Abandoned Meander
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SMOOCH13
Price: $12.00 Label: Smooch
Release
Date:
10/23/06
***Andrew Rothbard's solo debut is a totally tripped-out mix of pop-influenced folk and dark, heavy psych. He spent the last dozen years playing keyboards and bass (simultaneously) in legendary outfits VSS, Slaves and Pleasure Forever, and Abandoned Meander continues to showcase his virtuoso abilities. After the demise of Pleasure Forever, Rothbard became a bit of a recluse, obsessively working on the songs that evolved into this psych-folk masterpiece. He spent three years on the project, working each track into a state of absolute perfection.

The album is the first in a planned five-record series outlining the Discordiant concept of the "law of fives:" Thesis, Antithesis, Synthesis, Parenthesis, and Paralysis, each of which represents a different stage of life. Rothbard explains the first stage, "[Thesis] manifests chaos protected by Goddess Eris, codified by hexagram 2 of the I Ching and directed entirely toward Yin. She lives on the planet Venus, and her Tarot card appears as the High Priestess Trump II."

Needless to say, Abandoned Meander has a heavy California feel (although Rothbard originally hails from Smoochland, Colorado). Elements of sunshiny pop, folk, rock and noise all filter through one mind-fucked, psychedelic channel. Not one of the thirteen simple, beautifully written tunes will disappoint Pleasure Forever fans, freak-folk fans, or anyone else for that matter.

Record number two in the series, representing the Antithesis stage, is slated for release in 2007.

Artist: SLIM CESSNA'S AUTO CLUB Title: Jesus Let Me Down
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SMOOCH10CD
Price: $16.00 Label: Smooch
Release
Date:
10/9/06
***Jesus Let Me Down, Slim Cessna's Auto Club's raucous live double album, was originally issued in 2005 as a fan-club type release available almost exclusively at the band's concerts. However, after quickly selling through an initial pressing, the group decided to release it as a proper album rather than see it going for big bucks on eBay -- like the band's out-of-print sophomore release (also a live recording) -- and regardless, any album recorded, mixed and mastered by Bob Ferbrache is too good to be left out of print.

Slim Cessna's Auto Club have one of the most exciting live shows around. Singers Slim and Munly's drunken antics have won over many non-believers. After all, it's not every day you see a country band smash their equipment, drag bandmates over broken glass, stagedive, or commit other acts of tomfoolery that drive crowds into a frenzy.

Recorded by Ferbrache at Denver's lovely Gothic Theater, Jesus Let Me Down captures the band's CD release show for their latest studio album on Alternative Tentacles (Jello Biafra heckling is audible).

The two-disc set features tracks spanning SCAC's twelve-year career including fan faves like "Lethal Injection" (previously available only on the out-of-print American Country Music Changed Her Life) alongside tunes from their upcoming studio album, including the title track, the band's noisiest, weirdest song to date!

Mark Of Vaccination
Pine Box
Jesus Christ
Thorny Crown
Mother's Daughter
Providence, New Jerusalem

Artist: SOUL MERCHANTS Title: S/T
Format: 2xCD Catalog
Number:
SMOOCH17
Price: $16.00 Label: Smooch
Release
Date:
10/15/07
***Soul Merchants' music is best described as the band dubbed it 20 years ago: psychedelic death rock. On the surface, one could consider them Denver's version of Sisters of Mercy, but even in the '80s these guys were too old to be the new hip goth act and their '60s psych and '70s glam influences shined brightly over the darkness. Too punk for the goths and too goth for the punks, Soul Merchants never fit into the "scene" yet still collected a devoted fan-base during their brief 1985-'87 tenure. After an exhausting two years with over a hundred songs recorded, Soul Merchants threw in the towel and performed their final show at the inaugural South By Southwest in Austin.

This double disc set contains 80 minutes of music on each disc, compiling the best material from their four-track recording sessions. The songs come from their cassette releases only, as the LP Gates of Heaven will likely be reissued as its own entity in the future. Each song was remixed and remastered from the original tapes at Absinthe Studio by former Soul Merchant Bob Ferbrache.

Ferbrache also performed in Human Head Transplant simultaneously with Soul Merchants. He subsequently went on to create most music in Blood Axis, joined 16 Horsepower and Tarantella, and filled in for Slim Cessna's Auto Club. However, he is perhaps best known for his production work for NON, Death In June, Berlin, Bow Wow Wow, and, in Soul Merchant days, the Fluid, Warlock Pinchers, and Bum Kon.

Artist: V/A Title: Local Anesthetic
Format: LP Catalog
Number:
SMOOCH18
Price: $16.00 Label: Smooch
Release
Date:
6/16/08
***In 1981, Wax Trax Records co-owner Duane Davis formed the in-store label Local Anesthetic and released the debut single by Denver band Gluons featuring part-time Colorado resident Allen Ginsberg on vocals. Over the next few years Local Anesthetic pushed forward as the only continuous independent label in Colorado, staunchly documenting the underground music scene of the early '80s. This CD and LP collection compiles all the 7-inch singles released by the label, along with three other CO punk 7-inch gems released prior to Local Anesthetic Records' creation.

Although all the singles fall under the punk umbrella, Local Anesthetic features a diverse collection of hardcore, new wave, '77 punk, artsy fartsy, goth, and experimental recordings from 1977-1983. Ginsberg may be the biggest name on the compilation, but "My Dad's A Fucking Alcoholic" by pre-Fluid (Sub Pop) band The Frantix was and is the biggest hit released by Local Anesthetic. Drug-damaged punk played through broken amplifiers, the catchy little number caught the attention of record collectors across the country and even Peter Buck from REM and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth hunted down Denver producer Bob Ferbrache to learn every detail about how it was recorded. It was grunge before grunge. Also included on this compilation is the first single by Frantix, which for some reason was not included on their recent Afterburn Records CD collection.

Young Weasels (featuring Mr. Knutson who now runs Audika Records) and the Gluons were early Denver bands that were more of the new wave era after the '77 style stalled and before the kids started thrashing in Denver. Bum Kon and White Trash played short, fast, and loud hardcore on par with any other short, fast, and loud hardcore band from the era. Your Funeral is reminiscent of Siouxsie And The Banshees, while Your Funeral singer Jeri Rossi's solo single is more akin to Lydia Lunch. The Nails (who later had a hit with "88 Lines About 44 Women") and Defex were Boulder-based punk bands from 1977 who were the only two from the early era fortunate enough to release singles (not on Local Anesthetic). Only 100 copies of the Defex single made it out of the basement and existing copies fetch over $400 on eBay. It's good, too. The final single here (also not on Local Anesthetic) is by the Rok Tots, the most rockin' band of the era, with their blend of 1977-style punk, hardcore, and good old rock 'n' roll. The band still exists today.

30-second MP3 excerpts:

"My Dad's a Fucking Alcoholic" - Frantix
