Artist: A&E Title: Oi!

Price: $13.00 Label: Sonig

***AE are back, sort of. In 2004, Emiko Ota (Mami Chan Band, Sakura, Tornaod, Urban Sax, Villa St Michel) and Andrew Sharpley (Stock, Hausen & Walkman, Dummy Run) were asked to change the name of their band by lawyers representing Warp artists Autechre (who apparently claim legal ownership of the ligature). So it goes. ®A&E, what's in a name anyway, it's all about the music, right?

Those who recall the anarchic electro-punk of the duo's 2003 debut, Bootleg, are in for a surprise. Of course it's possible that this meld of traditional Japanese singing, deft jazz guitar and Gameboy chirping could surprise a lot of people. Junkshop keyboards and punk drums? Drum'n'bass mayhem and Hawaiian lap steel? Oi! is rife with such fiendish concoctions.

In cross-pollinating sounds from different eras, while exploiting a century of popular music, this "no-genre" band has in fact created a new one. Though A&E create "meta-music", or music about music, by placing familiar elements outside their original contexts, they're not overly concerned with culture- clash made into sound - the primary focus is music, not music theory.

On Oi!, pleasant ballads drift into daringly arranged pop songs and at any moment conventional playing can yield to wild experimenting. And these troubadours sing in many tongues: four of the tracks are electric interpretations of Japanese folk songs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries (an era in which Japan opened itself up to western influences). Together, Ota and Sharpley create a montage of stylistic elements, that whether coherent or absurd, has to be taken seriously.

  • Follow-up to 2003's ground-breaking debut, Bootleg
  • The artists formerly known as AE
  • A&E is Emiko Ota (Mami Chan Band, Sakura, Tornaod, Urban Sax, Villa St Michel) and Andrew Sharpley (Stock, Hausen & Walkman, Dummy Run)

***Electronics man Andrew Sharpley (Stock, Hausen & Walkman, Dummy Run, Mami Chan Band etc.) and female percussionist Emiko Ota (Urban Sax, Mami Chan Band etc.) got under way in 1998 as a sort of trash-electro-punk duo with shouting. (They were joined for a period by the notorious avant-guitarist Noel Akchoté (Rectangle), and became more structured and song-oriented.) Returning to their original line-up as a duo, they create a wild mixture of rhythmic cut-ups, crazy, cracked-up punk collages and lounge melodies, but despite the genre-hopping, Bootleg sounds like a well rounded piece of work. Coming across like a musical freakshow, a telling collection of rejected pop music of the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries, it is critical of the pop-media-machine, the duo's own quotation-machine runs at open throttle.

Like label-mates Wevie De Crepon, æ produces "meta-music" that is a lot of fun to hear, a welcome disruption of musical stereotypes, and in the end a proud presentation of an animal by the name of "Affrodil."

***Aelters spends a lot of time on the production of microscopically small cut-ups. Technical errors are not eradicated, but integrated into his music. There is no such thing as a mistake. When the software is stuck, when machines hum and click - this is when making music starts. The computer has a mind of its own, and Aelters is happy to let it have its way.

Plunderphonics, the joyful, media-critical poaching of the musical rubbish by which we are surrounded, is key to Aelters's work principles. His mixture of scraps of breakcore, scattered hard beats, spoken word collages, clicks, nursery rhymes and scenes of violence from action-packed movies are created "with enough weirdness and clicks to keep both the dancers and the laptop nerds happy." Aural snapshots (a family murmuring over supper, neighbors' sex-noises, those somehow ironic beats) "fall into the right places." His music knows no plan, but "just mutates along."

Some of the compositions on Ardchilds'com.undo are about three years old and have been reworked for this album multiple times; they have been re-re-re-arranged, until barely anything is left in common with the source material. This manic restlessness makes Aelters a typical Sonig artist.

Aelters grew up with heavy metal, '90s pop hits, the traditional Spanish music of his mother, and his friends in Dat Politics.

***Aelters, Frenchman and former member of Dat Politics, has described his take on the creative process as "gentle mutation." Though his approach to making music has remained consistent over the years, Aelters has definitely evolved where style is concerned. On Mixitch Mjeuga Djisc, the rattling, high-speed breaks of previous releases give way to hardcore disco-tech. The beats have become slower, distorted and heavier. Samples from an astounding range of sources still dominate-- spoken voices, beatboxes, Gameboys, old synths-- but his software now seems beyond human control, operating under the spell of some manic groove generator. The resulting tracks, much like the French themselves, are dense, concrete, often fun and always unpredictable.

Many of the sounds obviously stem from the direct neighborhood of the Frenchman. Strangely charged personal moments, fragments of conversation and children's voices blend and shuffle in the dust-up of whirling distortion and flickering soundbites. Familiar forms emerge out of apparent cacophony, are immediately subjected to ironic groove makeovers, and seconds later fired back into the sound storm. Bits of rhythm blast out of techno's past and immediately splinter off into whirring sound loops. Miraculously, the beat perseveres throughout, twisted but intact, and one is simply left with the question, "Who knows on which foot to dance to Aelters' music?"

Artist: BLECHDOM, KEVIN Title: Gentlemania
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SONIG76
Price: $13.00 Label: Sonig
Release
Date:
4/6/09
***From Tallahassee to Berlin to Tallahassee to Berlin, Kevin Blechdom and Sonig team up to release an acoustic record chock full of palpitating love songs. The album is lyrical, lush, and direct, with emotion of epic proportions.

Gentlemania was recorded at La Frette Studios in Paris and Heavysheet Studios in Berlin, and was co-produced and co-written with Blechdom's good friend Mocky. The collaboration benefits from Mocky's nurturing qualities that contrast, calm, and frame Blechdom's intrinsic chaos.

As the title suggests, Gentlemania is not as schizophrenic or madcap manic as her previous two electronic albums. Instead, Blechdom slows down, takes a deep breath, and, with thoughtful control, peels back layers of emotion for the listener to hear. Combining a strong background in classical and experimental music with a broad knowledge of pop styles, Blechdom travels between and coalesces country jangle, Broadway show tunes, old-school R&B, and many other styles into a cohesive and true musical story. The autobiographical and interpersonal themes revolve around introspection, longing, doubt, hope, and ultimately, human transformation.

Kevin Blechdom is Kristin Erickson from Stuart, Florida. Her last two albums, Eat My Heart Out (2005), and Bitches Without Britches (2003) were released on Chicks on Speed Records. Prior to that she was in Blectum From Blechdom, an electronic music duo based in San Francisco that released albums on Tigerbeat6, Orthlorng Musork, Phthalo, and Deluxe Records, and won an Award of Distinction for digital music at the Prix Ars Electronica. She has also released albums on Shimmy Disc with Adult Rodeo, and has just released a live banjo album with Eugene Chadbourne on Victo Records. Blechdom spent 2008 completing her MFA degree in Electronic Music at Mills College.

Artist: C - SCHULZ Title: 5. Flicker Tunes
Format: CD Catalog

Price: $13.00 Label: Sonig
Release
Date:

***C-Schulz's new solo outing 5. Flicker Tunes is on par with C-Schulz & Hajsch as far as economy of means and musical depth are concerned. The Cologne-based composer grants himself as well as his listeners the luxury of taking one's time to embark on a journey through his "concrete" sounds and expansive sonic planes. The result is that no matter how often you listen to 5. Flicker Tunes, it never sounds the same, nor does it ever wear out.

To a worldwide circle of industrial and electronic fans, C-Schulz is a kind of cult figure. His work has always been detached from the general trends in electronic music (most of which have been hyped to death) and thus it has never lost any of its freshness over the years. On the contrary: far off from any mainstream and the compulsion to be modern, C-Schulz continues working on and expanding his own musical cosmos.

After the disintegration of Kontakta, Cologne's first experimental and electro-acoustic supergroup (including amongst others Georg Odijk of a-Musik and Frank Dommert from sonig), musician, composer and filmmaker C-Schulz started working closely with Marcus Schmickler (aka Pluramon). The result of this collaboration were two albums released inder the name Pol on the Parisian Odd-Size label. July 2000 saw the release of C-Schulz & Hajsch, an album that remains a standard to this day.

  • Solo album by C-Schulz-- cult-figure to worldwide circle of industrial and electronic fans

Artist: CANDIE HANK Title: Groucho Running
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SONIG057
Price: $13.00 Label: Sonig
Release
Date:
11/6/06
***Groucho running is a scientific term describing the swift running movement of elephants. These animals can reach their top speed thanks to a technique that appears quite funny at first and reminds us of the legendary Groucho Marx.

Candie Hank (the mischievous alter ego of Patric Catani) has been messing up the musical landscape from Tokyo to Sao Paolo for some time now. It all started with a cover of France Gall's 'Les Sucettes' in collaboration with Hanayo, followed by the albums Kimouchi on Gagarin Records, Brandy Cramps on the French label Wwilko and a CD release on Solzne Records in Russia (Messer Chups). Despite multiple other releases with A*Class, Very Impossible Person, Puppetmastaz, among others, as well as various theatre and film soundtracks, the artist preferred in this case to produce the album secretly and as a result ended up on the brink of insanity.

And it had all started so nicely with Candie. Even though his first experience in business with his then project, E De Cologne, is kind of a painful memory in his (tender) heart, he nevertheless managed to throw in his extreme and absurd music smoothly and funkily, again and again, as if he were throwing a bottle of good wine into a ballroom.

At the age of 16 the first remixes for Mouse on Mars (Vulvaland) under the monikor E De Cologne & Test Tube Kid, appeared. Then in 1995, there was the move to Berlin enabling the start of the band with Gina V D'Orio (Cobra Killer), EC8OR.

Various tours and releases in Japan and the US followed; in 1997 EC8OR opened for The Prodigy in Japan. The Beastie Boys label, Grand Royal, licensed EC8OR's album All Of Us Can Be Rich for North America and Canada.

In 1999 Patric Catani produced the first hip hop tracks for the monumental radio play 'Steve Hive' together with Paul PM (Wordsound / Blackhoodz). In 2000, together with Gonzales, he produced the first tracks for the Jew Funk project (which aims at your short term memory), along with more and more collaborations with musicians such as Max Turner and Angie Reed. 2000 also saw Candie Hank's first performances in Tokyo and Osaka.

As mentioned earlier, Candie's life hasn't always been all jet set and pure luxury, and of course, there have been one or two confrontations with colleagues. But even in difficult situations he always managed to come to the right decision in the end, strengthening his ever-expanding ego. Sharp tongues describe him as some kind of mogul by now. If you don't find Candie very likable, Hank only confirms this impression. However, its really only on stage where he truly lets his arrogance loose. It's salon music for vampires -- laid back terror. It's a frantic ricochet shot through the rubble of gone eras, a jellyfish tango of the future. Regardless, at the end of the day Candie Hank couldn't care less whether digital world music is wanted or not. In his eyes it just turned out to be 'a mixed German record'.

Artist: CATANI, PATRIC / CHRIS IMLER / JORINDE VOIGT Title: Lemniscate
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SONIG78
Price: $12.00 Label: Sonig
Release
Date:
6/15/09
***Lemniscate is a unique collaboration between the artist Jorinde Voigt and composers Patric Catani (a.k.a. Candie Hank) and Chris Imler.

Fundamentally, the "lemniscate" is a mechanism for the infinite--a "ribbon" that chases itself in a figure eight describes the repeated and unending journey of the unbounded. The lemniscate's form derives itself from an ellipse, a figure wherein the sum of its distances to two fixed points is a constant. The French philosopher Descartes turned these spatial observations into the grounding principles of his Cartesian system of thinking which saw the merging of algebra and geometry.

Voigt draws structures energized by real and imagined possibilities to investigate finite boundaries of systems. She frames and moderates these investigations with spatiotemporal data, information on speed, volume, and an overlaying of sequences. As Cartesian thinking influenced not only mathematics but also the science of map drawing, Voigt's drawings or "scores," have left the paper for the Lemniscate project and begun to take place in space and time. In 2008, following Voigt's concepts, Catani and Imler developed the "lazy eight" of the infinity motif at the Watermill Center, NYC, a laboratory for performance, in the form of an acoustic "cluster." The looped composition, comprised of sixteen chapters, snakes around seven points using a multi-channel arrangement of six loudspeakers and thus describes the shape of a lemnsicate through pure sound. The two composers created moving musical structures with synthesized and live recorded material (field recordings) that build up rhythmic melodic structures and dissolve in a swarm-like behavior similar to that of Voigt's drawings. It was important for the artists to create music that split up into its individual elements rather than the dry, synthesized, granular soundscapes that are used most of the time in this context.

Viewing this work from its center, the effect is of an architected, geometric form--sensed but not seen, and entirely physical in its scale. At the core of the Lemniscate composition is Catani and Imler's structural break-up of a tonal construction as the various layers shift and chase themselves around a physical space.

To enable home listening, the multi-channel installation has been mixed down by the artists as a stereo version.

Artist: DJ ELEPHANT POWER Title: No Si, Ni So
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
S038CD
Price: $13.00 Label: Sonig
Release
Date:
9/27/04
***Witnesses to live appearances by the brothers Nicolas and Laurent Baudoux of Scratch Pet Land have found themselves spellbound. These two Belgian lunatics express a no-holds-barred attitude and jump to and from laptop music, sportive scratching and high-pitched clatter-grooves.

Nicolas Baudoux (aka DJ Elephant Power) is the "Scratch" in Scratch Pet Land; an extremely nimble turntablist, he's also the antithesis of what one would normally call a perfectionist-- a turntablism void of battle-attitudes or the vanities of the DJ. No Si, Ni So has a lot in common with the music of Scratch Pet Land. But one could also mistake it for the lost Zappa-album Jazz From The Dangerous Kitchen. The music is never phat or tight, but simply meanders on (and on). Musical themes are introduced and then left by the wayside, only to reappear unexpectedly. The percussion, which at times seems to have more in common with a domestic accident than with beats, is cushioned by a surprisingly jazzy Rhodes piano and obliquely filtered Moog sequences. This music is laid back, artful, never silly but, in spite of its intelligent trickiness, immune to artificial seriousness, as well as krautrock-y and funky in the "played mainly on kitchenware and samplers" sense. The tracks start casually, almost nonchalantly, with structures suggesting origins in live sessions, but then diverge and follow new roads. DJ Elephant Power creates music that does not want to fool. Cheerful and, in spite of all contrary rhythmic motions, very relaxed, neither demanding nor compelling, it just is. DJ Elephant Power offers a timeless and convincing DJ attitude which will set new standards for future DJ contests!

***Nicolas Baudoux's (aka DJ Elephant Power) 2004 solo album No Si, Ni So was more than just an enjoyable debut. Almost en passant, the album redefined the job and the self-image of the DJ. Baudoux is the legitimate successor to the turntablists who dominated the mid-'90s but without the battle attitude or b-boy posturing.

An anti-perfectionist, Baudoux performs on the verge of complete loss of control; his tracks are anything but tight, yet they groove like hell. He constructs monumental grooves from tinny hip hop samples, coaxes grime from electric guitars and layers jolty drum patterns, pumping distorted bass and clanging string instruments to create some radical dynamics.

As one half of the duo Scratch Pet Land, Baudoux belongs to a posse of Belgian artists known for their improvisational electronics and absurdist humor. Scratch The Hulu has plenty of both. It's club music that doesn't belong in any club-- nothing in its place, but everything fits. More conventional DJs might consider Scratch The Hulu dancefloor suicide, but as anyone who's had the pleasure of catching Baudoux's live set will testify; dancing is compulsory, though at times seemingly impossible.

Artist: DOGR Title: In Korean Wilds And Villages
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SONIG77
Price: $13.00 Label: Sonig
Release
Date:
6/15/09
***In Korean Wilds and Villages is the debut album by Dogr, a young New-York-based conceptual artist / instrumentalist / vocalist. Dogr explores unheard musical ideas and conducts webbed experiments, not only for the sake of discovering and exploiting a great art, but to speak in a clear and beautiful language, accurate in its contraction and original in its musical quality. Moreover, Dogr maintains his curiosity, the exotic eclecticism of his idiosyncratic musical arrangements, and his beatnik bare experimentalism. The production of Mouse on Mars's Andi Toma adds an analog thrill to this spiraling, epic record.

David Michael DiGregorio is was raised in coastal New England, where he created harmonies at an early age using a a four-track mini-cassette tape recorder, his voice, and an old Roland JX-8P with programmer. He soon moved on to 16-mm experimental filmmaking and electro-acoustic composition, using a Bolex camera and a Serge modular synthesizer. During his years in Amsterdam, his head and ears swelled with voices, mostly his own, multiplied. He was inspired in part by his time in a gospel choir and by the Korean operatic form called pansori, in which one singer assumes the role of the narrator, different characters in the story, and even the sounds of animals and nature. After many experiments using delay and loops to create massive vocal textures, he began telling the stories of others through his own music.

Many of the pieces that comprise In Korean Wilds and Villages come from the series of musical / visual / theatrical storytelling performances conceived by artist Sung Hwan Kim. Their collaboration resulted in music made by a single person using multiple voices. Many of the instruments on the album are also used in the performances-- the broken, wheezing harmonium on "Things Are Not More Exciting Than They Are"; the bell sound recorded in Seoul on " Fiks It Up"; the makeshift slide guitar on "Grows on Top of the Old One" and "O How This City Has Changed." In "My Must Needs Over There," Dogr remakes Kim's lyrics by recording the song using only his voice as instrument.

On In Korean Wilds and Villages, melodic phrases wind into journeys and the text pulls the listeners out to the realm of storytelling in a macroscopic sense; meanwhile, the winding melismata and grains of voice, like detailed veins under the skin, draw the listener microscopically into the music as it is in progress.

New limited edition release in sonigs' generic sleeve by Belgium's super futuristic band, the Fan Club Orchestra featuring Laurent Baudoux aka Sun OK Papi K.O.: (Electronic director), Quentin Hanon (Scratch Pet Land): Electric Guitar & Sage Ann: Game Boy Guitar, Ukulele.

The Fan Club Orchestra is a variable dimension. This time they are adapting to a fast car of the late century. Their music is a result of listening intensively to soundtracks of seventies and eighties science-fiction. It is nothing like playing covers, but there is a strong will to give back to the future, it's lost image of "progress and harmony for mankind". The Fan Club Orchestra will play a motorik music with fat riffs produced by Gameboys.

Biology Fan Club
Futuristic Fan Club

***2004 was an amazing year for Jason Forrest. His Sonig debut, The Unrelenting Songs of the 1979 Post Disco Crash, surprised many with its revolutionary rock-disco sample ideology. The album received a massive amount of supportive press internationally, the video for "Stepping Out" was named video of the year in Res magazine, and he performed 90-plus concerts at music festivals and clubs throughout Europe and Canada.

Now he's back with Lady Fantasy, a moody and expansive new EP. The tone is set on "The Work Ahead Of Us," a tense, abstract collaboration with avant-garde songwriter David Grubbs reminiscent of the drone-krautrock of Neu or Berlin-era Bowie. Then the title track, "Lady Fantasy," hits hard like a prog-rockfueled interstellar collision of massive synths, overdriven freejazz/ breakcore drums and cellphone bleeps. Then "The Lure Of You," co-written with Italian singer songwriter Margareth Kammerer, with its strangely light pop/rock feel surprises with subtly and mass-market appeal. The EP ends with "Sperry and Foil," a song in many parts, in many different directions, like a sprawling '70s prog epic. The song jumps between electro, bucolic rock, and anxious digital soundscapes yet holds a somewhat sweet and nostalgic feeling throughout. This eventually builds into a final rocking crescendo that prepares the listener for the big rock sound to be found on Forrest's full-length album due later this year.

  • Teaser EP for upcoming full-length
  • Features collaboratrions with David Grubbs and Margareth Kammerer
  • Breakcore meets prog-rock
  • Vinyl version features bonus track "Faust Respoke"

***Jason Forrest turned heads with his first Sonig release, The Unrelenting Songs of the 1979 Post Disco Crash, a musical rollercoaster ripping through genres like an amphetamine-crazed hobo. It received rave reviews from a respected array of international press-- a remarkable accomplishment for such an odd and ambitious mix of high-speed disco and breakcore with a '70s swagger. The question, of course, was "can Forrest possibly repeat this success?" A few beats into Shamelessly Exciting and there is suddenly no doubt-- yes, he can and he does it in style! Cascades of sound taken from virtually every form of rock music (hard/soft/ punk/prog/blues) pour down heavier than ever before. Even more intense is the sound of shattering samples, every single one of them vying for the listener's attention. Forrest sets off fireworks of ideas and references, exuding enormous energy along the way, filling every possible nook with a rocking good time. Forrest is not ashamed of being a fan and uses all kinds of music, regardless of what might be considered "good" or "bad" taste, as resources for his unpredictable masterpieces. Poaching in these fertile hunting grounds with competence, boldness and knowledge, yet retaining a seriousness and refined sense of depth, Forrest guarantees lasting euphoria in an otherwise disillusioned industry.

***Jason Forrest, an artist formerly known as Donna Summer, is a celebrity among electronic artists; featured by magazines all around the world, he is one one of the most brilliant Plunderphonic artists who has ever walked the Earth. He samples, deconstructs and reconstructs himself into a rage while driving audiences to the verge of madness. Forrest obviously knows his disco and his prog rock; he's a maniac who controls his machines with dreamlike competence. His knowledge of repertoires and styles seems boundless. He mixes the most trashy with the most beautiful and the most rocking elements of th disco-decade into lavish sets, which, believe it or not, are perfectly danceable. Samples sound as if they had been broken three times and patched up four. Big band-like brass sections! Wild guitar solos! And, of course, always disco, Disco, DISCO! All this is combined in such a euphoric mix.

***These five songs were all at some point all included on the Post Disco Crash album, but work really well together on their own. They were all created about the same time, and are related like siblings, different and individual, but still blood.

"I Wish That Everything Was Gold" was created from manipulated samples of the always big and synthetic ELO and reduces them to a more generalized wash. "Drieze Cassette" is the eldest of the bunch, hard as fuck with a brainy, expansive center that is very basic and genuine. The flipside begins with the party stomper "Dragonattack," an homage to both Queen and early Michael Jackson, with its a rock-and-roll rollercoaster disco beats and the occasional acid riff. Things get more funky with "Doubleneck'd Liar," a glitchy disco funk number with horns and Casio beats. "Gonna Take You To Hell" ruins the party with good intentions cursed by drunken antics.

***The second Mound Magnet part from LITHOPS (aka Jan St. Werner of Mouse on Mars and Microstoria). Elevations above Sea Level gives us aural diagrams of a large, hypermodern cities with futuristic vehicles moving around. The electrical ticking of fluorescent advertising panels, a thwappy airiness of the ventilation system, the rattles of trains and chopped up hums of distant roads, the mechanical groans that maintenance machinery starts up with, rain drumming on the stretched glass roofs of urban malls, the howling groans of motorcycles on city highways.

It's not an ambient record by any means, nor is it purely musique concrete. It's rather an acid fulled hallucination of how to detect an idea of the future in the noises that surround us. Though he uses some of the sound editing methods like his contemporaries (and his own other groups), this doesn't mass into huge pools to make a statement; the basslines, hums, jolts and whooshes divide and multiply into sections like buildings and streets are divided, from sub-basements to rooftops, alleys and boulevards, by stories. Lithops' narcoleptic programming has a precision which holds the listener completely captive-- difficult, haunting and highly enjoyable.

***Is there any point at which artists like Jan St. Werner run out of steam? St. Werner represents a third of Mouse On Mars and should be exhausted from the activities of that band alone. Nevertheless, he also acts as artistic director for the Amsterdam Institute for Electronic Music, the Studio for Electro-instrumental Music, curates unusual musical programs like the Noiseroom, develops electronic sound generators such as the Meshbox and somehow found the time to write a book-- Vorgemischte Welt by St. Werner and Klaus Sander has just been released by the German publisher Suhrkamp Verlag.

Since 1997 St. Werner has also recorded under the alias Lithops. The last Lithops release, 2003's Scrypt, impressed with its non-linear compositional structures and dense organic sounds, a rare synthesis in electronic music. His latest seems almost carelessly light in comparison. From the first track Queries surprises with subtly bouncing electronica, intuitive rhythms and comical bleeps and clonks-- quite a surprise, considering Scrypt managed almost entirely without beats.

Collecting previously unreleased and rare material from the late '90s, Queries offers an enlightening view of a time when abstract sounds established themselves as significant elements in electronic music. It's delightful to discover a ten-year old sound aesthetic that remains as groovy and tangible as ever. It's a relief to find that any sort of music can remain relevant if it is produced with authenticity and an abundance of ideas.

***Nathan Michel has been working on his doctorate in music composition at Princeton, and released two brilliant glitch pop records on Tigerbeat6 to great critical success but limited exposure.

The Beast is like a 10-song best friend peppered with pop-hooks-- a digital and acoustic orchestra arranged into a tight pop structure. Each song has an amazing complexity and listenability. In addition to playing guitars (acoustic, electric, nylon string, and bass), bongos, computer, drum set, egg shakers, hand claps, harmonica, keyboards, leaf crunch, marimba, melodica, piano, recorder, tambourine, vibraphone, vocals, vocoder, and whistles, Michel expands and elaborates on his previous vocal work, layering his voice and harmonies, and further develops his own quirky lyricism. His music is rooted almost entirely in acoustic instruments, but all are recorded separately, edited, processed and rearranged in the computer, putting him among laptop deviants like Dat Politics and Max Tundra as well as the true masters of studio recording like Todd Rundgren, Jeff Lynne, and Brian Wilson. One is reminded of Wilson and Burt Bacharach in Michel's intricate harmonies, dense instrumental layering, and avant-pop congeniality.

***Being on tour is like the storyline of a moderately exciting adventure novel: stumbling from one bizarre situation to the next and after some predictable plot twists and a little luck, a happy ending is reached, in this case the successful entertainment of 300 to 3000 people by means of a gig. It's a ride in the fast lane and everything is amplified to the extreme-- junk food, sleep deprivation, raging hormones, reckless bus drivers, flat tires, border guards-- any little thing can spark the always improvised miracle machine of stage action.

Even a band born in the studio realizes the magic of sound possibile from the stage, and any group with a great live show dreams of capturing that magic on tape. However, live albums are in a way absurd. Trying to package the spur-of-the-moment artist/audience dynamic may not be possible. So many live albums are like holiday photos-- pale two-dimensional documents of a once-enchanting moment.

For that reason Mouse on Mars avoided releasing a live recordings for ten years. They left the documentation of their stage shows to bootleggers, secret archivists and fidelity resistant butterfly collectors. Apart from a limited seven-inch and some quietly-tolerated bootleg CDRs, the band had never released anything that hadn't been painstakingly assembled and galvanized in the studio. But now Live04-- highlights of extensive touring in 2004 culled from about 600 hours of live material-- makes clear as day why the band's gigs can be just as exciting and unpredictable as their records. The music of Mouse On Mars is constantly reinventing itself and this magical energy, benefiting from ten years of live performance, is especially evident when the band takes it to the stage.

***After interim activities such as remixing Depeche Mode and appearing at several festivals, the likeable master of the Casio releases his fifth album. The aural handwriting of few contemporary electronic musicians is as distinctive as Schlammpeitziger's.

Everything Without All Inclusive perfects and expands his signature friendly Casio-grooves and irresistible melodies with surprising elements beneath the surface - seriousness and doubt. Schlammpeitziger always augments his melodious tracks with subtle layers of noise. Many here have an ambiguous quality that's hard to grasp; arrangements are shot through less with a barrel-organ sort of humour than with desire and melancholy. Nevertheless, this music is surely big fun and good for love at first sight. But it also stands the test of the second and third sight. On further hearings, this music reveals qualities submerged by a wave of sympathy in the initial encounter.

***Ever since the release of Schlammpeitziger's first cassette on the renowned and legendary Cologne-based label Entenpfuhl in 1993, Jo Zimmermann has granted an international audience insights into his private cosmos. The musician, graphic artist, and tireless inventor of increasingly strange song titles with a ribald as well as subtle humor has been coining a highly distinctive style for the last fifteen years. His new album exhibits significant artistic development while remaining true to his own personal vision.

On Schwingstelle Fuer Rauschabzug, Schlammpeitziger discovers deep frequencies and pulsating beats. All of a sudden, his familiar combination of eloquent melodies and lively rhythms acquires a completely new pull. With this album, Zimmermann pulses his listeners into hypnosis. This new quality transforms Schlammpeitziger's music in a remarkable way: it remains friendly and weird, but gains in seriousness and depth. The hidden qualities of this kind of club-suitable pop music (or radio-friendly club music?) readily disclose themselves on a second or third listen. This "musical double entendre" was already hinted at on the last album Everything Without All Inclusive. Now it has become Schlammpeitziger's new trademark. Still, the listener is caught up in a net of intricately woven melodic lines.

Schwingstelle Fuer Rauschabzug was mixed by Andi Toma (Mouse On Mars/Von Suedenfed) at St. Martin Tonstudio, Duesseldorf. Pingipung Records' Springintgut, who recently released an album on City Centre Offices, contributes a remix of "Bassbestie's Blaesse" (available as a bonus track on the CD only). Furthermore, the CD contains a beautiful video for the track "Rastplatz Rastlos" by artist Ulrike Goeken (also responsible for Schlammpeitziger's live visuals and other music videos).

***With the freewheeling folk of inew weird Americai currently the talk of the town and improv artists across the UK turning into underground heroes overnight, hardly anyone seems to have noticed a similarly vibrant scene emerging in Belgium, where the protagonists take themselves far less seriously. As evidence, consider recent releases by Uske Orchestra, Fan Club Orchestra, and the irrepressible brothers Laurent and Nicolas Baudoux. Known jointly as the mad geniuses behind Scratch Pet Land, these two have furthered their lunacy with a pair of solo releases. Nicolas led with a breathtaking debut in 2004 under the alias DJ Elephant Power and Laurent now follows with Sun Ok Papi K.O.

It goes without saying that Orchestre Philharmonok (what is this Belgian obsession with orchestras?) presents music that has o seriously o never been heard before. Scratch Pet Landis influences are never too far away, but Laurent Baudoux raises his cocktail of broad bass, game boys, metal guitars, trashy keyboards and cracking beats to the next level. Bizarre string instruments from the Far East twist and turn in the grooves yet most of the album sounds fabricated from some new synthetic miracle plastic.

A musical dilettante and professed non-virtuoso, Sun Ok Papi K.O. creates music with the innocent attitude of the enthusiast, free from any impulse to repeat or mimic. Orchestre Philharmonok is like club culture without the club or avant-garde without the music theory. Itis got the unmistakable, euphoric appeal of authentic fan admiration, unburdened by clichE or stylistic reference, probing ceaselessly for unexplored turns at an incredible speed.

***Allow us to split hairs over a subtle difference: Uské Orchestra's music is indeed a mixture of styles, but not in the avant-garde sense. For here pop music styles are not referenced, wildly combined and rendered ridiculous. No, this band rather assembles and stacks microscopic bits from all possible genres and styles to build teeming musical market places. Uské Orchestra shows a preference for acoustic sounds, recorded as is. Within seconds they change the mood, the instrument, the timbre and the arrangement. If there was ever an award for devious sound design, Uské Orchestra would be the clear winner. Just imagine the sound track to The Matrix, performed by a hyperactive brass band from the Balkans or Mexico. Up close nothing about this music appears ostentatious; but if you take a step back and view the sound paintings on Niko Et La Berlue as a whole, you'll notice the impermeability and voluminous magnitude of the tracks. Just as the mighty Leviathan emerges out of a mass of little people, ant heaps crop up here out of innumerable triads.

If there is a connection between music and language, then its a babylonic mess that reigns at Uské Orchestra. Sometimes we think we are hearing elements of bluegrass, polka, lounge jazz and electronica, but then again we are not quite sure. Our grasp of this music always seems a bit behind as it smirkingly teases and entangles us in its rough poetry. Perhaps we are too close to tell.

Parts of Niko Et La Berlue sound like jam sessions with only a rough direction, recorded on top of each other and then finished off with a good shake. What "neo folk" frequently promised, but then disappointingly delivered as regurgitated hippie music is here in Uské Orchestra's music -- a really new radical strategy. The ensemble sounds the attack, the tones are free and the voice does not sit dominatingly on top of the whole, but fits into the overall picture, dressed up as various personalities. Uské Orchestra creates a strange kind of singer-songwriter music with simultaneous cut-up madness and affected eccentric minstrelsy. But Uské Orchestra is also a mystery, a kind of non-music we haven't had since Nurse with Wound. The wonderful artwork of the album and the meticulously decorated live acts of the band only complete the "Gesamtkunstwerk", a successful synthesis of arts.

Though there are key themes recognized by the four Belgian musicians who comprise Uské Orchestra running throughout the album, Niko Et La Berlue is not about themes or variations. Their aim is to keep the music free to flow liberally in all directions. For us, the listeners, it means we can not help but give into the Uske Orchestra's intensely maniacal cosmic myriad of sounds.

***This compilation CD documents the Noise Room, an autonomous surround-sound space built for pre-recorded musical works and sonic experiments. Each piece performed in the Noise Room has been selected, edited, and arranged for a situation in which the audience can dedicate themselves to a maximum listening experience. The works presented in the Noise Room refer specifically to a so-called "speaker" concert as opposed to a "live" event. Each composition is played back through a multi-channel 5.1 speaker setup that is configured according to the spatial acoustics of the Noise Room.

Noise Room 1 was built and set up at the STEIM Center for the Research and Development of Instruments and Tools for Performers in the Electronic Performance Arts in Amsterdam in 2005. Version 2 was located at the Melkweg concert space in Amsterdam in 2006. Version 3 was installed in the Cubitt Gallery in London in September 2008. The Noise Room was initiated and designed by Jan St. Werner, former artistic director of STEIM and member of Mouse on Mars.

The CD version offfers a selection of shortened stereo edits. It features exclusive compositions by Lee Ranaldo, Black Dice, Kevin Blechdom, Mouse on Mars, David Grubbs, Vert, Jason Forrest, Daniel Schorno, Sun OK Papi KO, Casey Rice, Robert van Heumen, Jeff Carey, Keith Fullerton Whitman aka Hrvatski, and Michel Waisvisz.

Going to a tape music concert characterized by a lack of performance can be a valuable experience in itself: a situation where one is presented with a high-fidelity sound installation in which one can finally hear the subtle details of the music. It is this situation that defines the need for the Noise Room. At the same time, it builds upon in the history of acousmatic music--a history of using space for sound compositions--while referring to the transgression of boundaries and the utopian inspiration of the avant-garde. --Roland Spekle

***On May 6, 2006, in the Broletto courtyard in Novara, Italy, a unique event took place, conceived by Luca Cerizza: one of the most intriguing talents of contemporary electronica, Adam Butler, performed a remix of all of the music that had appeared during the course of the festival, while the courtyard's medieval setting became the backdrop for the video installations of artist Luca Trevisani. The Sonig label, which in the last ten years has asserted itself as one of the most innovative labels, not just in the field of electronica, but in a multiplicity of styles, now presents a CD (dedicated to Jelly Roll Morton) of this event.

Adam Butler, a Brighton native in exile who has spent the last seven years in Cologne, Germany, is something of a curiosity in the electronic music world: playing the piano since he was six; quoting Cage and Pynchon; deconstructing Keith Jarrett's Koeln Concert (2000's The Koeln Konzert, one of The Wire's CDs of the year); reprising utopian architect Buckminster Fuller's "Everything I Know" lecture by performing all his own music that he could still play or remember; and then, after losing all his equipment, computers, and data in a studio burglary, reinventing himself as a junkyard ragtime hip-hop singer-songwriter, in cahoots with other mavericks such as Noel Akchote and DJ Elephant Power (2006's Some Beans & an Octopus).

In between, Butler also recorded two more CDs of exquisitely crafted chamber jazz electronica (9 Types of Ambiguity and Small Pieces Loosely Joined), remixed artists such as Dieter Roth (commissioned by Bayerischer Rundfunk and broadcasted live) and composers such as Michael Nyman (at the Approximations 7:1 festival in Duesseldorf), and toured throughout Europe, Asia, and the US (either supporting Mouse On Mars, or alone, or with one of his many backing bands-- he currently has three).

New Thing at Novara, despite having been constructed in a one-week frenzy in a hotel room in Novara during the festival, incorporating recordings of each of the concerts immediately after they took place, is simultaneously two things: a richly representative document of the singular breadth of Vert's music, at once groovy, noisy, tender, beguiling, and slyly humorous; and a respectful testimony to the huge variety of musicians who performed at the Festival, without whose support this CD would not have been possible.

30-second MP3 excerpts:

Is This Thing On?
The Thing About Tony Jackson
Things At Speed
All Things To All People (People Get Ready)
Monk's Thing (Nutty)
The Light, The Femininity Of The Thing
Something Else
Fabrizio's Thing (Raga Del Cuore)

***The masterful sound design of Vert's third Sonig album creaks and splutters, rumbles and rocks, breaks and blows from all sides and every angle. Despite complexity, British exile and resident of Cologne Adam Butler grooves with the best of them. Small Pieces Loosely Joined comprises both flirty come-ons in pop's direction and short sketches, apropos of its title. Using accordion, Rhodes, lots of piano, and a dense tissue of electronica, the tracks approach musical themes, toy with them, view them from different angles, and then move on to new pastures. The listener is by no means swept away in a maelstrom of sonic events, but rather engaged by the pace of Small Pieces Loosely Joined. You simply can't not listen. Vert conjures up tension and dissolves it by turns in a wonderfully charming, articulate and unpredictable manner. This string of loosely, even randomly connected musical clippings contains a clear thread of musical rigor, embedded deep down in the complex arrangements, traceable throughout the entire album.

***The fifth release from Cologne-based electronic artist Adam Butler (aka Vert) is an incredible mix of of hip-hop songwriting and storytelling backed by found-percussion, ragtime piano, taut-yet-fluid double bass, and occasional help from a rasping rhythm sax, old marimbas, dirty organ, and a panoply of mutated and invented instruments (such as the "shakerphone" and the "palmonica").

Some Beans & An Octopus is a joyful romp through the entire history of popular music from around the world, taking in ragtime, R'n'B, flamenco, ska, Turkish wedding music and lots more. But this isn't just some sample-heavy genre checklist -- there are actually no samples used at all -- instead, these tracks genuinely seem to have a global perspective hard-wired into their DNA. This is 21st century world music, the ultimate mash-up of ideas and styles.

***One might assume that an album by the director of the STEIM (STudio for Electro-Instrumental Music) in Amsterdam is a soundtrack for dusty libraries. But the new fulllength CD by Michel Waisvisz (inventor of the analogue and interactive Crackle Box, an electroacoustic sound-modulator controlled by STEIM software, Lisa), sounds anything but academic. A very musical, humorous, and extremely fresh approach on Waisvisz's first album since 1978 colors these live recordings made between 1977 and 2000, edited by Sonig label head Frank Dommert. Amid morphing noise-- strangely leaping reggae quotations, modulation sessions seemingly forgotten in time and space, and hard, metallic stacattos of chords-- outlines of songs and flashes of harmonies are always discernable.

Waisvisz' activities have been manifold and varied, moving between serious and light music. He has collaborated with both Laurie Anderson and Steve Lacy as well as the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. For years, fans have made efforts to compel another release by the master, who has long voiced opposition to canned music (which he consideres soulless). In Tune, with its playfully absurd music for theater and anarchic arrangements for drums, finally delivers something special to lovers of innovative music.

***The seventh album by Workshop (aka Kai Althoff and Stephan Abry) is an extreme. Its predecessor Es liebt dich und deine Körperlichkeit ein Ausgeflippter showcases fascinating yet disturbing songwriting, both textual and musical. Yog Sothoth continues in that tradition and moves freely through various styles: electronica, house, rock, industrial, triphop, easy listening, folk, and German circus cabaret. Despite the assortment of styles there is cohesion throughout-- a Workshopification, if you will-- that helps Yog Sothoth from coming across like a compilation album. Althoff's lyrics are written in an idiosyncratic, inner-worldly code, while the accompanying music appears to be a blurred, dreamlike picture of something known yet unknown. Comparisons dropped in the past include Can, Robert Wyatt, Neu!, Pink Floyd, Red Krayola, and Boredoms.
