Artist: A&E Title: Oi!
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SONIG60CD
Price: $13.00 Label: Sonig

***AE are back, sort of. In 2004, Emiko Ota (Mami Chan Band, Sakura, Tornaod, Urban Sax, Villa St Michel) and Andrew Sharpley (Stock, Hausen & Walkman, Dummy Run) were asked to change the name of their band by lawyers representing Warp artists Autechre (who apparently claim legal ownership of the ligature). So it goes. ®A&E, what's in a name anyway, it's all about the music, right?

Those who recall the anarchic electro-punk of the duo's 2003 debut, Bootleg, are in for a surprise. Of course it's possible that this meld of traditional Japanese singing, deft jazz guitar and Gameboy chirping could surprise a lot of people. Junkshop keyboards and punk drums? Drum'n'bass mayhem and Hawaiian lap steel? Oi! is rife with such fiendish concoctions.

In cross-pollinating sounds from different eras, while exploiting a century of popular music, this "no-genre" band has in fact created a new one. Though A&E create "meta-music", or music about music, by placing familiar elements outside their original contexts, they're not overly concerned with culture- clash made into sound - the primary focus is music, not music theory.

On Oi!, pleasant ballads drift into daringly arranged pop songs and at any moment conventional playing can yield to wild experimenting. And these troubadours sing in many tongues: four of the tracks are electric interpretations of Japanese folk songs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries (an era in which Japan opened itself up to western influences). Together, Ota and Sharpley create a montage of stylistic elements, that whether coherent or absurd, has to be taken seriously.

  • Follow-up to 2003's ground-breaking debut, Bootleg
  • The artists formerly known as AE
  • A&E is Emiko Ota (Mami Chan Band, Sakura, Tornaod, Urban Sax, Villa St Michel) and Andrew Sharpley (Stock, Hausen & Walkman, Dummy Run)

***Electronics man Andrew Sharpley (Stock, Hausen & Walkman, Dummy Run, Mami Chan Band etc.) and female percussionist Emiko Ota (Urban Sax, Mami Chan Band etc.) got under way in 1998 as a sort of trash-electro-punk duo with shouting. (They were joined for a period by the notorious avant-guitarist Noel Akchoté (Rectangle), and became more structured and song-oriented.) Returning to their original line-up as a duo, they create a wild mixture of rhythmic cut-ups, crazy, cracked-up punk collages and lounge melodies, but despite the genre-hopping, Bootleg sounds like a well rounded piece of work. Coming across like a musical freakshow, a telling collection of rejected pop music of the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries, it is critical of the pop-media-machine, the duo's own quotation-machine runs at open throttle.

Like label-mates Wevie De Crepon, æ produces "meta-music" that is a lot of fun to hear, a welcome disruption of musical stereotypes, and in the end a proud presentation of an animal by the name of "Affrodil."

***Aelters spends a lot of time on the production of microscopically small cut-ups. Technical errors are not eradicated, but integrated into his music. There is no such thing as a mistake. When the software is stuck, when machines hum and click - this is when making music starts. The computer has a mind of its own, and Aelters is happy to let it have its way.

Plunderphonics, the joyful, media-critical poaching of the musical rubbish by which we are surrounded, is key to Aelters's work principles. His mixture of scraps of breakcore, scattered hard beats, spoken word collages, clicks, nursery rhymes and scenes of violence from action-packed movies are created "with enough weirdness and clicks to keep both the dancers and the laptop nerds happy." Aural snapshots (a family murmuring over supper, neighbors' sex-noises, those somehow ironic beats) "fall into the right places." His music knows no plan, but "just mutates along."

Some of the compositions on Ardchilds'com.undo are about three years old and have been reworked for this album multiple times; they have been re-re-re-arranged, until barely anything is left in common with the source material. This manic restlessness makes Aelters a typical Sonig artist.

Aelters grew up with heavy metal, '90s pop hits, the traditional Spanish music of his mother, and his friends in Dat Politics.

***Aelters, Frenchman and former member of Dat Politics, has described his take on the creative process as "gentle mutation." Though his approach to making music has remained consistent over the years, Aelters has definitely evolved where style is concerned. On Mixitch Mjeuga Djisc, the rattling, high-speed breaks of previous releases give way to hardcore disco-tech. The beats have become slower, distorted and heavier. Samples from an astounding range of sources still dominate-- spoken voices, beatboxes, Gameboys, old synths-- but his software now seems beyond human control, operating under the spell of some manic groove generator. The resulting tracks, much like the French themselves, are dense, concrete, often fun and always unpredictable.

Many of the sounds obviously stem from the direct neighborhood of the Frenchman. Strangely charged personal moments, fragments of conversation and children's voices blend and shuffle in the dust-up of whirling distortion and flickering soundbites. Familiar forms emerge out of apparent cacophony, are immediately subjected to ironic groove makeovers, and seconds later fired back into the sound storm. Bits of rhythm blast out of techno's past and immediately splinter off into whirring sound loops. Miraculously, the beat perseveres throughout, twisted but intact, and one is simply left with the question, "Who knows on which foot to dance to Aelters' music?"

Artist: C - SCHULZ Title: 5. Flicker Tunes
Format: CD Catalog

Price: $13.00 Label: Sonig
Release
Date:

***C-Schulz's new solo outing 5. Flicker Tunes is on par with C-Schulz & Hajsch as far as economy of means and musical depth are concerned. The Cologne-based composer grants himself as well as his listeners the luxury of taking one's time to embark on a journey through his "concrete" sounds and expansive sonic planes. The result is that no matter how often you listen to 5. Flicker Tunes, it never sounds the same, nor does it ever wear out.

To a worldwide circle of industrial and electronic fans, C-Schulz is a kind of cult figure. His work has always been detached from the general trends in electronic music (most of which have been hyped to death) and thus it has never lost any of its freshness over the years. On the contrary: far off from any mainstream and the compulsion to be modern, C-Schulz continues working on and expanding his own musical cosmos.

After the disintegration of Kontakta, Cologne's first experimental and electro-acoustic supergroup (including amongst others Georg Odijk of a-Musik and Frank Dommert from sonig), musician, composer and filmmaker C-Schulz started working closely with Marcus Schmickler (aka Pluramon). The result of this collaboration were two albums released inder the name Pol on the Parisian Odd-Size label. July 2000 saw the release of C-Schulz & Hajsch, an album that remains a standard to this day.

  • Solo album by C-Schulz-- cult-figure to worldwide circle of industrial and electronic fans

Artist: CANDIE HANK Title: Groucho Running
Format: CD Catalog
Number:
SONIG057
Price: $13.00 Label: Sonig
Release
Date:
11/6/06
***Groucho running is a scientific term describing the swift running movement of elephants. These animals can reach their top speed thanks to a technique that appears quite funny at first and reminds us of the legendary Groucho Marx.

Candie Hank (the mischievous alter ego of Patric Catani) has been messing up the musical landscape from Tokyo to Sao Paolo for some time now. It all started with a cover of France Gall's 'Les Sucettes' in collaboration with Hanayo, followed by the albums Kimouchi on Gagarin Records, Brandy Cramps on the French label Wwilko and a CD release on Solzne Records in Russia (Messer Chups). Despite multiple other releases with A*Class, Very Impossible Person, Puppetmastaz, among others, as well as various theatre and film soundtracks, the artist preferred in this case to produce the album secretly and as a result ended up on the brink of insanity.

And it had all started so nicely with Candie. Even though his first experience in business with his then project, E De Cologne, is kind of a painful memory in his (tender) heart, he nevertheless managed to throw in his extreme and absurd music smoothly and funkily, again and again, as if he were throwing a bottle of good wine into a ballroom.

At the age of 16 the first remixes for Mouse on Mars (Vulvaland) under the monikor E De Cologne & Test Tube Kid, appeared. Then in 1995, there was the move to Berlin enabling the start of the band with Gina V D'Orio (Cobra Killer), EC8OR.

Various tours and releases in Japan and the US followed; in 1997 EC8OR opened for The Prodigy in Japan. The Beastie Boys label, Grand Royal, licensed EC8OR's album All Of Us Can Be Rich for North America and Canada.

In 1999 Patric Catani produced the first hip hop tracks for the monumental radio play 'Steve Hive' together with Paul PM (Wordsound / Blackhoodz). In 2000, together with Gonzales, he produced the first tracks for the Jew Funk project (which aims at your short term memory), along with more and more collaborations with musicians such as Max Turner and Angie Reed. 2000 also saw Candie Hank's first performances in Tokyo and Osaka.

As mentioned earlier, Candie's life hasn't always been all jet set and pure luxury, and of course, there have been one or two confrontations with colleagues. But even in difficult situations he always managed to come to the right decision in the end, strengthening his ever-expanding ego. Sharp tongues describe him as some kind of mogul by now. If you don't find Candie very likable, Hank only confirms this impression. However, its really only on stage where he truly lets his arrogance loose. It's salon music for vampires -- laid back terror. It's a frantic ricochet shot through the rubble of gone eras, a jellyfish tango of the future. Regardless, at the end of the day Candie Hank couldn't care less whether digital world music is wanted or not. In his eyes it just turned out to be 'a mixed German record'.

Price: $13.00 Label: Sonig

***Witnesses to live appearances by the brothers Nicolas and Laurent Baudoux of Scratch Pet Land have found themselves spellbound. These two Belgian lunatics express a no-holds-barred attitude and jump to and from laptop music, sportive scratching and high-pitched clatter-grooves.

Nicolas Baudoux (aka DJ Elephant Power) is the "Scratch" in Scratch Pet Land; an extremely nimble turntablist, he's also the antithesis of what one would normally call a perfectionist-- a turntablism void of battle-attitudes or the vanities of the DJ. No Si, Ni So has a lot in common with the music of Scratch Pet Land. But one could also mistake it for the lost Zappa-album Jazz From The Dangerous Kitchen. The music is never phat or tight, but simply meanders on (and on). Musical themes are introduced and then left by the wayside, only to reappear unexpectedly. The percussion, which at times seems to have more in common with a domestic accident than with beats, is cushioned by a surprisingly jazzy Rhodes piano and obliquely filtered Moog sequences. This music is laid back, artful, never silly but, in spite of its intelligent trickiness, immune to artificial seriousness, as well as krautrock-y and funky in the "played mainly on kitchenware and samplers" sense. The tracks start casually, almost nonchalantly, with structures suggesting origins in live sessions, but then diverge and follow new roads. DJ Elephant Power creates music that does not want to fool. Cheerful and, in spite of all contrary rhythmic motions, very relaxed, neither demanding nor compelling, it just is. DJ Elephant Power offers a timeless and convincing DJ attitude which will set new standards for future DJ contests!

***Nicolas Baudoux's (aka DJ Elephant Power) 2004 solo album No Si, Ni So was more than just an enjoyable debut. Almost en passant, the album redefined the job and the self-image of the DJ. Baudoux is the legitimate successor to the turntablists who dominated the mid-'90s but without the battle attitude or b-boy posturing.

An anti-perfectionist, Baudoux performs on the verge of complete loss of control; his tracks are anything but tight, yet they groove like hell. He constructs monumental grooves from tinny hip hop samples, coaxes grime from electric guitars and layers jolty drum patterns, pumping distorted bass and clanging string instruments to create some radical dynamics.

As one half of the duo Scratch Pet Land, Baudoux belongs to a posse of Belgian artists known for their improvisational electronics and absurdist humor. Scratch The Hulu has plenty of both. It's club music that doesn't belong in any club-- nothing in its place, but everything fits. More conventional DJs might consider Scratch The Hulu dancefloor suicide, but as anyone who's had the pleasure of catching Baudoux's live set will testify; dancing is compulsory, though at times seemingly impossible.

***2004 was an amazing year for Jason Forrest. His Sonig debut, The Unrelenting Songs of the 1979 Post Disco Crash, surprised many with its revolutionary rock-disco sample ideology. The album received a massive amount of supportive press internationally, the video for "Stepping Out" was named video of the year in Res magazine, and he performed 90-plus concerts at music festivals and clubs throughout Europe and Canada.

Now he's back with Lady Fantasy, a moody and expansive new EP. The tone is set on "The Work Ahead Of Us," a tense, abstract collaboration with avant-garde songwriter David Grubbs reminiscent of the drone-krautrock of Neu or Berlin-era Bowie. Then the title track, "Lady Fantasy," hits hard like a prog-rockfueled interstellar collision of massive synths, overdriven freejazz/ breakcore drums and cellphone bleeps. Then "The Lure Of You," co-written with Italian singer songwriter Margareth Kammerer, with its strangely light pop/rock feel surprises with subtly and mass-market appeal. The EP ends with "Sperry and Foil," a song in many parts, in many different directions, like a sprawling '70s prog epic. The song jumps between electro, bucolic rock, and anxious digital soundscapes yet holds a somewhat sweet and nostalgic feeling throughout. This eventually builds into a final rocking crescendo that prepares the listener for the big rock sound to be found on Forrest's full-length album due later this year.

  • Teaser EP for upcoming full-length
  • Features collaboratrions with David Grubbs and Margareth Kammerer
  • Breakcore meets prog-rock
  • Vinyl version features bonus track "Faust Respoke"

***Jason Forrest turned heads with his first Sonig release, The Unrelenting Songs of the 1979 Post Disco Crash, a musical rollercoaster ripping through genres like an amphetamine-crazed hobo. It received rave reviews from a respected array of international press-- a remarkable accomplishment for such an odd and ambitious mix of high-speed disco and breakcore with a '70s swagger. The question, of course, was "can Forrest possibly repeat this success?" A few beats into Shamelessly Exciting and there is suddenly no doubt-- yes, he can and he does it in style! Cascades of sound taken from virtually every form of rock music (hard/soft/ punk/prog/blues) pour down heavier than ever before. Even more intense is the sound of shattering samples, every single one of them vying for the listener's attention. Forrest sets off fireworks of ideas and references, exuding enormous energy along the way, filling every possible nook with a rocking good time. Forrest is not ashamed of being a fan and uses all kinds of music, regardless of what might be considered "good" or "bad" taste, as resources for his unpredictable masterpieces. Poaching in these fertile hunting grounds with competence, boldness and knowledge, yet retaining a seriousness and refined sense of depth, Forrest guarantees lasting euphoria in an otherwise disillusioned industry.

He samples, deconstructs and reconstructs himself into a rage while driving audiences to the verge of madness. Forrest obviously knows his disco and his prog rock; he's a maniac who controls his machines with dreamlike competence. His knowledge of repertoires and styles seems boundless. He mixes the most trashy with the most beautiful and the most rocking elements of th disco-decade into lavish sets, which, believe it or not, are perfectly danceable. Samples sound as if they had been broken three times and patched up four. Big band-like brass sections! Wild guitar solos! And, of course, always disco, Disco, DISCO! ***These five songs were all at some point all included on the Post Disco Crash album, but work really well together on their own. They were all created about the same time, and are related like siblings, different and individual, but still blood.

"I Wish That Everything Was Gold" was created from manipulated samples of the always big and synthetic ELO and reduces them to a more generalized wash. "Drieze Cassette" is the eldest of the bunch, hard as fuck with a brainy, expansive center that is very basic and genuine. The flipside begins with the party stomper "Dragonattack," an homage to both Queen and early Michael Jackson, with its a rock-and-roll rollercoaster disco beats and the occasional acid riff. Things get more funky with "Doubleneck'd Liar," a glitchy disco funk number with horns and Casio beats. "Gonna Take You To Hell" ruins the party with good intentions cursed by drunken antics.

***The second Mound Magnet part from LITHOPS (aka Jan St. Werner of Mouse on Mars and Microstoria). Elevations above Sea Level gives us aural diagrams of a large, hypermodern cities with futuristic vehicles moving around. The electrical ticking of fluorescent advertising panels, a thwappy airiness of the ventilation system, the rattles of trains and chopped up hums of distant roads, the mechanical groans that maintenance machinery starts up with, rain drumming on the stretched glass roofs of urban malls, the howling groans of motorcycles on city highways.

It's not an ambient record by any means, nor is it purely musique concrete. It's rather an acid fulled hallucination of how to detect an idea of the future in the noises that surround us. Though he uses some of the sound editing methods like his contemporaries (and his own other groups), this doesn't mass into huge pools to make a statement; the basslines, hums, jolts and whooshes divide and multiply into sections like buildings and streets are divided, from sub-basements to rooftops, alleys and boulevards, by stories. Lithops' narcoleptic programming has a precision which holds the listener completely captive-- difficult, haunting and highly enjoyable.

***Is there any point at which artists like Jan St. Werner run out of steam? St. Werner represents a third of Mouse On Mars and should be exhausted from the activities of that band alone. Nevertheless, he also acts as artistic director for the Amsterdam Institute for Electronic Music, the Studio for Electro-instrumental Music, curates unusual musical programs like the Noiseroom, develops electronic sound generators such as the Meshbox and somehow found the time to write a book-- Vorgemischte Welt by St. Werner and Klaus Sander has just been released by the German publisher Suhrkamp Verlag.

Since 1997 St. Werner has also recorded under the alias Lithops. The last Lithops release, 2003's Scrypt, impressed with its non-linear compositional structures and dense organic sounds, a rare synthesis in electronic music. His latest seems almost carelessly light in comparison. From the first track Queries surprises with subtly bouncing electronica, intuitive rhythms and comical bleeps and clonks-- quite a surprise, considering Scrypt managed almost entirely without beats.

Collecting previously unreleased and rare material from the late '90s, Queries offers an enlightening view of a time when abstract sounds established themselves as significant elements in electronic music. It's delightful to discover a ten-year old sound aesthetic that remains as groovy and tangible as ever. It's a relief to find that any sort of music can remain relevant if it is produced with authenticity and an abundance of ideas.

***Nathan Michel has been working on his doctorate in music composition at Princeton, and released two brilliant glitch pop records on Tigerbeat6 to great critical success but limited exposure.

The Beast is like a 10-song best friend peppered with pop-hooks-- a digital and acoustic orchestra arranged into a tight pop structure. Each song has an amazing complexity and listenability. In addition to playing guitars (acoustic, electric, nylon string, and bass), bongos, computer, drum set, egg shakers, hand claps, harmonica, keyboards, leaf crunch, marimba, melodica, piano, recorder, tambourine, vibraphone, vocals, vocoder, and whistles, Michel expands and elaborates on his previous vocal work, layering his voice and harmonies, and further develops his own quirky lyricism. His music is rooted almost entirely in acoustic instruments, but all are recorded separately, edited, processed and rearranged in the computer, putting him among laptop deviants like Dat Politics and Max Tundra as well as the true masters of studio recording like Todd Rundgren, Jeff Lynne, and Brian Wilson. One is reminded of Wilson and Burt Bacharach in Michel's intricate harmonies, dense instrumental layering, and avant-pop congeniality.

***Being on tour is like the storyline of a moderately exciting adventure novel: stumbling from one bizarre situation to the next and after some predictable plot twists and a little luck, a happy ending is reached, in this case the successful entertainment of 300 to 3000 people by means of a gig. It's a ride in the fast lane and everything is amplified to the extreme-- junk food, sleep deprivation, raging hormones, reckless bus drivers, flat tires, border guards-- any little thing can spark the always improvised miracle machine of stage action.

Even a band born in the studio realizes the magic of sound possibile from the stage, and any group with a great live show dreams of capturing that magic on tape. However, live albums are in a way absurd. Trying to package the spur-of-the-moment artist/audience dynamic may not be possible. So many live albums are like holiday photos-- pale two-dimensional documents of a once-enchanting moment.

For that reason Mouse on Mars avoided releasing a live recordings for ten years. They left the documentation of their stage shows to bootleggers, secret archivists and fidelity resistant butterfly collectors. Apart from a limited seven-inch and some quietly-tolerated bootleg CDRs, the band had never released anything that hadn't been painstakingly assembled and galvanized in the studio. But now Live04-- highlights of extensive touring in 2004 culled from about 600 hours of live material-- makes clear as day why the band's gigs can be just as exciting and unpredictable as their records. The music of Mouse On Mars is constantly reinventing itself and this magical energy, benefiting from ten years of live performance, is especially evident when the band takes it to the stage.

***After interim activities such as remixing Depeche Mode and appearing at several festivals, the likeable master of the Casio releases his fifth album. The aural handwriting of few contemporary electronic musicians is as distinctive as Schlammpeitziger's.

Everything Without All Inclusive perfects and expands his signature friendly Casio-grooves and irresistible melodies with surprising elements beneath the surface - seriousness and doubt. Schlammpeitziger always augments his melodious tracks with subtle layers of noise. Many here have an ambiguous quality that's hard to grasp; arrangements are shot through less with a barrel-organ sort of humour than with desire and melancholy. Nevertheless, this music is surely big fun and good for love at first sight. But it also stands the test of the second and third sight. On further hearings, this music reveals qualities submerged by a wave of sympathy in the initial encounter.

Track listing:

1. Behäbige Alarmschwarmlage (Sluggish Alarm Swarm Scenario)
2. Prä-digitaler Volksstuhlhänger (Pre-digital Folk Stool Hanger)
3. Verordentliche Unruhe (Tidified Restlessness)

***Ever since the release of Schlammpeitziger's first cassette on the renowned and legendary Cologne-based label Entenpfuhl in 1993, Jo Zimmermann has granted an international audience insights into his private cosmos. The musician, graphic artist, and tireless inventor of increasingly strange song titles with a ribald as well as subtle humor has been coining a highly distinctive style for the last fifteen years. His new album exhibits significant artistic development while remaining true to his own personal vision.

On Schwingstelle Fuer Rauschabzug, Schlammpeitziger discovers deep frequencies and pulsating beats. All of a sudden, his familiar combination of eloquent melodies and lively rhythms acquires a completely new pull. With this album, Zimmermann pulses his listeners into hypnosis. This new quality transforms Schlammpeitziger's music in a remarkable way: it remains friendly and weird, but gains in seriousness and depth. The hidden qualities of this kind of club-suitable pop music (or radio-friendly club music?) readily disclose themselves on a second or third listen. This "musical double entendre" was already hinted at on the last album Everything Without All Inclusive. Now it has become Schlammpeitziger's new trademark. Still, the listener is caught up in a net of intricately woven melodic lines.

Schwingstelle Fuer Rauschabzug was mixed by Andi Toma (Mouse On Mars/Von Suedenfed) at St. Martin Tonstudio, Duesseldorf. Pingipung Records' Springintgut, who recently released an album on City Centre Offices, contributes a remix of "Bassbestie's Blaesse" (available as a bonus track on the CD only). Furthermore, the CD contains a beautiful video for the track "Rastplatz Rastlos" by artist Ulrike Goeken (also responsible for Schlammpeitziger's live visuals and other music videos).

***SCRATCH PET LAND's debut was released on the French label Source, home of the band Air. Soon after, the band remixed for Buffalo Daughter and eventually found a place on Mouse On Mars' Sonig Records. Pop hooks, ukeleles, turntables, wild melodies, and exotic rhythms all find their way into SPL's exotic world. Improv brothers Laurent and Nicolas Baudoux focus on progressive techniques and strategies, new combos, logics, patterns, and rhythms. Listen and let it take you away.

***With the freewheeling folk of inew weird Americai currently the talk of the town and improv artists across the UK turning into underground heroes overnight, hardly anyone seems to have noticed a similarly vibrant scene emerging in Belgium, where the protagonists take themselves far less seriously. As evidence, consider recent releases by Uske Orchestra, Fan Club Orchestra, and the irrepressible brothers Laurent and Nicolas Baudoux. Known jointly as the mad geniuses behind Scratch Pet Land, these two have furthered their lunacy with a pair of solo releases. Nicolas led with a breathtaking debut in 2004 under the alias DJ Elephant Power and Laurent now follows with Sun Ok Papi K.O.

It goes without saying that Orchestre Philharmonok (what is this Belgian obsession with orchestras?) presents music that has o seriously o never been heard before. Scratch Pet Landis influences are never too far away, but Laurent Baudoux raises his cocktail of broad bass, game boys, metal guitars, trashy keyboards and cracking beats to the next level. Bizarre string instruments from the Far East twist and turn in the grooves yet most of the album sounds fabricated from some new synthetic miracle plastic.

A musical dilettante and professed non-virtuoso, Sun Ok Papi K.O. creates music with the innocent attitude of the enthusiast, free from any impulse to repeat or mimic. Orchestre Philharmonok is like club culture without the club or avant-garde without the music theory. Itis got the unmistakable, euphoric appeal of authentic fan admiration, unburdened by clichE or stylistic reference, probing ceaselessly for unexplored turns at an incredible speed.
