The latest in a long, highly enjoyable series of fucked up punk rock action form the tweaked brain of Mick Collins (Gories, Blacktop, Dirtbombs, et. al.). Riding shotgun on Collins' newest rampage through the halls of sobriety and good manners are fellow window-smashing goons Terri Wahl (Red Aunts), Dan Brown (Royal Trux, '68 Comeback, Johnny Hash) and Marty Moore ('68 Comeback, Johnny Hash). Do people ransack and burn everything in sight just because? People do. "Hate Filled Classics" is louder and more bombastic than Mick's usual-but-not-ordinary low-fidelity garage; apparent is Terri Wahl's ampheto-punk influence. Other ingredients in the Screws' thrashoholic blend are warped blues, sheet-metal-whacked industrial jungle rhythms, and some distorted blues guitar that'll keep you off your toes and on your heels. 15 short, searing slices of electronic mayhem on this, the prolific duo's latest and last for awhile (Simon Wickham-Smith is moving to Australia) contrast the song-oriented action of their previous release Pulse of the Rooster. Performed on electric sitar, voice, glass harmonica, drum machine, electric cifteli, electric banjolin, violin, cello, cardboard boxes, Casio, electric shirt-reinforcer, electric bass, guitar, bowed cymbals, electric thai harp, clock-chimes, reed organ, and bagpipes, the sounds have been mutated into towering alien sculptures evoking the "textures" of metals. This is the first release by Matthew Bower's new group, following the retirement of Skullflower and Total. The trio of Bower, John Godbert and Neil Campbell mines territory similar to Total but with a more group-oriented, communal trance arrangement. Taking cues from minimalist composers, Indian music, and assorted folk musics, Sunroof uses guitar, violin, hand percussion and reeds to build up layer upon layer of stratospheric bliss. On top of the layers of sound floats Bower's sometimes gentle, sometimes excoriating, always unmistakable electric guitar. Released the week of February 22nd.

Lots of Bests for this Austin band: the city's Music Awards has presented Silver Scooter with trophys for Best LP ("The Other Palm Springs"), Best Pop Band, Band of the Year, and Best Producer. "Other" was also picked as one of the best albums of 1997 by the Austin Chronicle and the Austin American-Statesman. and Silver Scooter won the hearts and minds of local popsters with "Palm Springs'" simple-yet-lush, guitar-driven songs and lyrical storytelling. Going national is a full-time job, though, and "Orleans" will sway non-Austinites the world over with its mature focus and atypically structured studio edge. Released the week of February 22nd.

Sandra recorded this stark and sulty collection of melancholy and exhilarating material in Berlin, having relocated there from her native New Zealand. Fans of her previous material on the IMD, Turbulence and Xpressway labels will find this new release (her first full-length material since 1995) engrossing and bewitching. Sandra's lyrics and alternately deadpan and harrowing delivery potently convey a bittersweet atmosphere of dissolution and decay. These beautifully bleak songscapes will attract fans of Graeme and Peter Jefferies, early Opal, and the Renderers. Released the week of March 29th.

Like the sticker says: "Swans-related product." The
Body Haters is the crude, arrhythmic and elemental evil sister to the almost
baroque, pyschoambient/acoustic soundscapes of the Body Lovers, another
instrumental project by the Swans' Michael Gira. Constructed entirely
of raw field recordings and primitive cassette loops, 34:13 was completed
in a single 12-hour session at a mastering studio. Electronic, concrete,
abstract and visceral, best experienced in the manner in which it was created:
at the maximum tolerable volume level. Limited to 2000.
