MELT BANANA Charlie (AZAP AZAP001) CD/LP

Self-released opus from manic Japanese post-everything ensemble. Mystical yet nearly hysterical (and let's not forget moderately robotic) quartet soaks our heads in their mathcore spongebath. Guest appearances by members of Dieselhed, Wintermittens, the Three Doctors Band and Mr. Bungle. Released the week of September 28th (on CD) and October 12th, 1998 (on LP).

BIRCHVILLE CAT MOTEL Siberian Earth Curve (DRUNKEN FISH DF43) CD

Campbell Kneale is a New Zealander with and impeccable ear for layering feedback, cymbals and electronic squall. Does the stillness of Thomas Koner get you There on a regular basis? Maybe some Aube-cious high-end volume stirs your coffee? Pull into the BCM parking lot and discover instant validation. Released the week of October 5th, 1998.

ABSTRACT TRIBE UNIQUE Mood Pieces (MASSMEN 001) CD/2LP

Appearances on Ninja Tunes' "Black Whole Styles" comp, Industry's "Beats and Lyrics" collection and Conscious Evolution's "Caught Up In The Rappcha" comp primed hip-hip tastebuds; URB, Mic Check and Rap Pages have all sung praises. This release was originally scheduled for release on the Grand Royal label, but then Capitol Records reorganized their urban promotions department and. . . well, you can guess the rest. Hip-hop with mystique and presence. Released the week of September 14th, 1998.

DIRTBOMBS Horndog Fest (IN THE RED ITR55) CD/LP

Mick (Gories) Collins, joined by two drummers and two bassists, churns out punk/noise/blues drenched in sex and beer. This record will remove all our inhibitions and make us feel better about our opposable thumbs and upright (for now) position. Very much of the moment. Released the week of August 31st, 1998.

PHOBIA Means of Existence (SLAP A HAM SLAP 47) CD/LP

Dreadlocked SoCal crustlords grind through 17 steaming ingots of lead-pipe crush-o-rama. Anti-war, anti-cop, anti-vivisection, and pro-grind. Political as fuck, heavy as shit-- consider "Mentally Murdered"-era Napalm Death as a reference point. Released the week of August 31st, 1998.

JASON BILL & JACK ROSE Via St. Louis (DRUNKEN FISH DF36) CD

GASP Drome Triler of Puzzle Zoo People (SLAP A HAM SLAP46) CD/LP

Full length debut from twisted LA foursome who hover in the nebulous, non-existent middle ground among power violence, sludge, noise and Captain Beefheart. Aggressive, heavy and completely unpredictable; fans of the absurd will revere it. Hardcore fans will worship it. All others will flee in fear. Released July 27th, 1998.

BRUCE RUSSELL Projects For A Revolution In New York (SILTBREEZE SB71) LP

Debonair Dead C. leader and Siltbreeze logo model Tom Lax let loose in February 1997 in the basement of an abandoned Masonic lodge. Disembowled piano, pots, pans, rocks, sticks, a triangle, a distant siren, an electric fan, and some sort of freaked out Kiwi intonarumori, with the cool guitar hum 'n drone of Surface of the Earth's Paul Toohey added after the fact. Primitive and twisted feedback-laden steel-string action over a background of tape-loop drone skree. Mercy. Released July 27th, 1998.

Rochester, NY ensemble throw the baby out with the bongwater and destroy all available preconceptions regarding the non-Estrus garage rapscallity of what has been delivered to a Nod-deficient world. YOUNG GINNS (s/t) (HONEY BEAR HB20) CD

Unwound members Justin and Brandt were stranded at the DC abode of one Tim Green in winter 1991. Basement SST frenzies were the delusion of the day, and eventually Brett Frost heard the call to dissipation so actutely he temporarily set aside his Nyquil and acted out his wildest Darby dreams. What began as a mathrock diversion transmogrified into a punk rock nightmare. Lucky you. Released June 8th, 1998.

JOEL R. L. PHELPS 3 Downer Trio (PACIFICO 07) CD

You know, the guy from Silkworm. He, along with Robert Mercer and William Herzog, make up the Downer Trio. The sparse, distinct power of 3's mournful twang conjures memories of Gram Parsons, Palace and Souled American. A living, rocking, breathing record. Released June 15th, 1998.

LA LENGUA ASESINA Hotel Opera (SMELLS LIKE RECORDS SLR025) CD

From Two Dollar Guitar member Tim Foljahn, solo for the first time. Lower in key and uniquely intense, these 13 rambling, ephemeral soul ballads are heavily touched by the ghosts of an anglo-folk past. Released June 22nd, 1998.

TOWER RECORDINGS Furniture Music for Evening Shuttles (SILTBREEZE SB54) CD

In a time when most of their peers are attempting to come to terms with Eastern-tinged modal blap, stroke LaMonte Young's beard, or try on kosmische Krautrock cadet uniforms, the Tower Recordings have chosen to fan the fires and fill their lungs with the smoke of left field prog, stoner folk and hippie psyche. Three tokes for single-mindedness! Released June 22nd, 1998.

JENNY MAE Don't Wait Up For Me (ANYWAY ANY47) CD

Since leaving Vibrolux in 1994, Columbus, Ohioan Jenny Mae has released at least ten singles, plus a full-length album "There's A Bar Around The Corner. . . Assholes" (1995). I had this melatonin dream about Neil Young and Julee Cruise waking up together in the trunk of Mark Eitzel's '67 Polara. Déja vu about to become flesh, a sturdy, firm, loosey- goosey hangover of a record, where regret meets disdain, but seldom at the expense of fun. Released May18th, 1998.

KING SOUND QUARTET The Get Down Imperative (IN THE RED ITR052) LP

Loud and lewd rocking and rolling: Mick Collins (Gories, Blacktop), Tim Kerr (Poison 13, Jack O'Fire, Lord High Fixers), Alex Cuervo (Blacktop) and Stephanie Friedman (Lord High Fixers, Sugar Shack) all in one room with the tape deck humming. A side-long version of "Space Is The Place" pins even ears that refuse to be pinned. Pounding garage punk, raw soul, and free jazz abound here. A portion of this recording will not be found on the upcoming (can we get back to you?) CD. Vinyl released May 18th, 1998.
